Chapter 7: Our City Governor Is Noble, Cold and Glamorous
Before, when he was writing the plot, to ensure there was some logic within the setting, he made the Elders the ones that actually took over the control of Tian Du Cheng. The original City Governor, Zi Che Xiong, only cared about training. So every single affair and authoritative power fell into the Elders’ hands. Zi Che Xiong was only an iconic figure they set up to act as a God’s statue that protected them and used its power to guarantee the city could continue to exist successfully.
Zi Che Xiong totally didn’t care about who controlled the city. To him, as long as there were enough training resources, then there were no problems at all. So, after Zi Che Zhu Bai became the next City Governor, he also became the Elder’s puppet, just like his father.
However, Gu Bai was different. If he hadn’t known he had transmigrated into his novel, he was willing to be a guy that just sat around, did nothing and waited to die. Being able to enjoy life without needing to worry about anything was absolutely amazing and fortunate ~\(≧?≦)/~
But, based on the current situation, if he didn’t tidy up the mess in the city, then when the protagonist was out of his mind and visited Tian Du Cheng, the protagonist would definitely be looked down upon by the citizens. And for those who looked down on the protagonist, had any of them ever had a happy ending?
You didn’t see how many cannon fodders in Shi Dian’s protagonist is op novels[1] got bashed up and killed just because they were rude to the protagonist! Some of their families and tribes were completely slaughtered, such cases happened quite often.
Gu Bai didn’t dare underestimate the protagonist’s level of lunacy, not even for a single minute. So obviously, he’d be extra careful in regards to this kind of matter. And so, in order to successfully suppress the Elders who were greedy about authoritative power, the fifteen-year-old Gu Bai knew he was too young to overpower them on the table, so he just released his aura at all times, along with an emotionless face that he’d make as imposing as possible. With this, he finally looked like a City Governor, kind of…
Being an otaku, Gu Bai totally had no idea of how to manage a city successfully. But being the author of this novel, Gu Bai clearly knew how arrogant the city’s wushu practitioners could be…this section of the plot had bypassed logic completely.
So, he carried out the following plans:
Refusing to submit your account book? Bash them up!
Taking advantage of your seniority? Bash them up!
Refusing to promote new recruits? Bash them up!
Wanting to continue raising parasites? Bash them up!
Refusing to follow the orders? Bash them up!
Wanting to gather the crowd to pressure and threaten their masters? Then they must be completely bashed up!
In short, Gu Bai only spoke one sentence: come fight me if you disagree. And so, after all troublemakers had been bashed up once, things that were supposed to stop had all stopped.
As for the elderly ones that refused to resign but still had countless political connections, Gu Bai didn’t bother them much. He simply left them to recommend their family heirs and he promoted only those who were useful while he kicked out the useless ones. Most of the time Gu Bai also went to recruit some eager youngsters within the city, he allowed them to reach heaven with a single bound[2] and work for him, who became extremely loyal to him due to his combined controlling tactic of power and rewards.
A few years after carrying out those strategies, most of the people that were capable of working in the City Governor Palace had been replaced with young people. Those who didn’t get replaced were all honest and humble people. In addition to this, Gu Bai even selected some high quality, non-family-heirloom martial arts from his father’s personal treasury as teaching materials. Because of this, he even gathered a group of continuously growing, trustworthy subordinates.
However if things were only that simple, then Gu Bai’s expression wouldn’t have been that emotionless. The main reason was, he’d finally killed someone with his own hands.
This otaku had never touched blood before, but after Zi Che Xiong died, many people who wanted a share of Tian Du Cheng’s wealth appeared, one after another. Many of those people secretly invaded the City Governor’s Palace and used all sorts of means to try and take advantage of the chaos. There were even people who put a bounty on his life because Gu Bai took away too many of their benefits and advantages. Gu Bai had to face all of those people.
In such times, either they died or Gu Bai died. Gu Bai was really afraid of dying, and that was why he kept a distance between himself and the protagonist, trained endlessly, and of course, he could also try to overcome psychological hurdles during these times. So, he had not only killed people, up until now; eight years had passed, the number of lives he had taken had already reached tens of lives.
But Gu Bai wasn’t a serial killing maniac, sometimes knowing was one thing, but after you’d really committed it, there was no way you could feel relieved.
Keeping his dignity and authority was no longer the only reasons for him to fix his expression. Most of the time it was because he had totally forgotten how to smile. After his first time killing a person, Gu Bai continued having nightmares for many days. In the end, he used a fallacy to comfort himself.
Something like, “this book was written by me, without me those people wouldn’t even exist. So all I’m doing is taking their existence back. There’s nothing wrong with this”, or “those people were all from the second dimension, so I didn’t really kill a real person”. Something along those lines.
After using this method for a long time, he’d managed to build up his mental foundations and he was finally able to calm down. Indeed, since he’d already transmigrated into this world, then he would need to act according to this world’s rule. Present and past were different. Except for the people he cared about, other people were like paper men in his eyes, not actual, living beings.
After Gu Bai divided his surroundings into different dimensions, when he encountered the same thing again, he only felt a slight discomfort, he no longer had sequential nightmares.
Without noticing, Gu Bai had already become Tian Du Cheng’s real City Governor and used to Tian Du Cheng’s way of life, and beloved by the citizens. He trained really hard, his strength was already at a high level…High-Rank Wu Jun, two divisions higher than Zi Che Shu Bai in the original story.
However, at that moment in time, he encountered that bomb-like woman. At the same time, he also realized he was already twenty-three years old. And the age of twenty-three was the timeline for the first event in the storyline to begin.
He briefly calculated, the protagonist in the present time had probably just been destroyed and pushed into a swamp by his enemies, and was being humiliated by the crowd due to his arrogant behavior when he was powerful. In many people’s eyes, the current protagonist no longer had any chance of turning the tide back in his favor.
When his thoughts reached this point, Gu Bai became a little nervous. He’d done a lot of preparation already, but he still worried about the coherence of the storyline. Of course, he definitely wasn’t going to win the heart of the protagonist’s fiancee. However, the protagonist could still wear plain clothing when visiting Tian Du Cheng. Gu Bai silently held his fists tight in his mind: my citizens, the time to test your nobility and morality has come! And those guards at the gate, please don’t look down on a person because of their appearance!
It’s worth pointing out that, Gu Bai, who had totally restrained himself from prying about for any information on the protagonist due to his fear of being noticed by the protagonist, had placed all his hopes into the gate watchers, whom he had been training for many years. He believed everything would be fine if he sent his most trustworthy, loyal and kind subordinates to watch the gate during that period of time.
And so, the fully prepared Gu Bai, began washing and dressing up under the servants’ ministrations. Yap, you heard it right, washing and dressing up. Being the City Governor, sometimes you just couldn’t reject your subordinates’ kindness, you needed to attend the birthday party your subordinates have arranged for you.
On that day, Tian Du Cheng’s City Governor Palace was quite lively, it was the current City Governor, Zi Che Shu Bai’s birthday. Regardless of the town’s size, every single Town Chief near Tian Du Cheng and figures from Big Families with high status had all come to congratulate the City Governor, one by one. Who wasn’t willing to bribe a young City Governor who was already a High-Rank Wu Jun at the age of twenty-three? Not to mention that they had other intentions for going to that place. The City Governor wasn’t married yet, he didn’t even have any affairs or lovers.
11 am was when the lunch banquet was about to start. A Hundred tables had been set up inside the City Governor Palace’s Main Hall, on the tables were all kinds of delicious, unique and luxurious dishes. Those who came to the banquet were all famous and powerful people, with high status, although they couldn’t be compared to Tian Du Cheng’s City Governor, their knowledge was still wide and comprehensive. However, when they witnessed the scale of the banquet, they couldn’t refrain and exclaimed in admiration about Tian Du Cheng’s overwhelming wealth. Suddenly, those with ill intentions had even more cunning and devious thoughts.
Those who served the guests were all young boys, with a delicate, pretty physical appearance. The guards on the sides were also young, handsome, muscular men. This kind of arrangement appeared to be extremely masculine, and at the same time it also made the guests ponder secretly in their hearts; “This Tian Du Cheng’s City Governor was undoubtedly a wushu nerd as described in the rumors, he has never touched any woman.
But, in the next moment, their beliefs were completely overturned. Suddenly, a wave of gentle wind breezed through the Main Hall. The wind was full of a refreshing scent, which smelled like orchids and musk, and also extremely clean. Many pure white flower petals were falling slowly from the air, the fragrance was refreshing, rich and long-lasting, which made the Main Hall appear to be even more like a wonderland.
Suddenly, evoked from the outside of the Main Hall, was the sound of things rushing through the air, followed by the fluttering sound of skirts that moved along with the wind. The guests lifted their eyes and saw four beautiful ladies dressed in white, each was holding a strand of white silk, that lifted a luxurious throne and flew into the Main Hall.
Each one of them possessed an unworldly beauty, they were also powerful and had unique temperaments. Especially the vigorous, heroic aura in their eyes, which was also more charming and softer than ordinary beauties, it added a valiant feeling that couldn’t be described by words. With the lead of the white silks, the throne landed on the Main Hall’s Seat of Honor, under the crowd’s stares, onto a platform made of jade inches higher than the flat ground, without making any sound. And on top of the throne, sat an extremely handsome, beautiful young man.
The young man was wearing a pure white brocade robe, silver and dim flowers had been carefully stitched onto the robe’s hems and sleeves. He was wearing a jade crown, about half an inch tall, which firmly held up his long, pitch black hair. But other than those, no other decorations adorned his body.
However, although there were no decorations, he still appeared to be more noble and high-class than everyone else. The four unworldly, beautiful servants stood obediently next to him, surrounding him. There was a person holding a zither in their arms, a person holding a flute, a person that held a sword with both of their hands and a person that lifted a plate. Each one of them had an appearance that exceeded the world’s boundary, like a celestial beauty from the Heavenly Palace. But none of those Heavenly Palace, celestial beauties could surpass the young man’s radiance.
Undoubtedly, he was the one truly deserving of being called the owner of Tian Du Cheng, Zi Che Shu Bai, the City Governor. The only unfortunate thing was that his expression was aloof. When he sat higher than everyone else, it felt like everyone was being looked down upon by him. Everyone was attracted to Zi Che Shu Bai’s temperament, they couldn’t even restrain themselves from secretly praising him. He was indeed Tian Du Cheng’s uncommon genius, his aura and temperament were no less than a king’s! If the people they brought with them could be chosen by him…
The young man, seated on the throne, was observing the reactions of the people below him, “my handsomeness definitely exceeds everyone’s expectations! Nice, Bai Yun City Governor’s style + a noble and coldly beautiful expression + Chi Zhe Shu Bai’s unworldly beautiful, physical appearance, his handsomeness would definitely outweigh others” he thought, without imposing any expression on his face.
