CHAPTER 6: CHALLENGING CARLYLE, THE GREATEST ROYAL COURT MAGICIAN ALIVE
âMagic Arrow.â
The white arrow shot from my hand flew directly at Carlyle.
My arrow and Carlyleâs shield crashed head-on.
A sound loud enough to burst our ears reverberated throughout the school grounds.
My Magic Arrow, which everyone thought would bounce off Carlyleâs shield and disappear, defied all expectations.
It dug into his shield, bit by bit.
Zuuuuuuuu.
I heard a faint noise.
It was the sound of Carlyle being pushed back, unable to brace himself against the force of my Magic Arrow.
His right hand, which was holding my Magic Arrow at bay, was trembling from the pressureâto the point where his outstretched elbow began bending at an angle.
The expression on Carlyleâs faceâ
was a broad smile.
âYou really are intriguing.â
The moment he said that, Carlyle yelled.
âHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!â
Together with his scream, he changed the angle of his arm and pushed my Magic Arrow to the ground.
A white radiance burst open like an explosion.
Once the flash of light faded away, Carlyle quickly stood up with a refreshed expression.
âYouâve entertained me quite a bit.â
After seeing his victorious figure, the examinees shouted out with joy.
âAs expected of Lord Carlyle!â
âSo one-sided! Heâs amazing!â
Among the cheers of the examinees, Carlyle walked over to me with a leisurely gait.
âThat ends your third shot. Are you content with this?â
ââŠYes. Iâm satisfied as long as I get to shoot my Magic Arrow.â
âSplendid. Your exam is now over. Good work.â
âThank you for accompanying me.â
Attempting to give a parting handshake, I presented my right hand.
Howeverâ
Carlyle didnât shake back. Without saying anything, he motionlessly stared at my hand.
âHm?â
When I tilted my head in confusionâ
The examiner barged in between Carlyle and me.
âYou dumbass! Who do you think you are, requesting a handshake from Lord Carlyle! Thereâs a limit to how rude you can be!â
Ah, so thatâs how it is.
There was no doubt that I was some no-name examinee who no one knew the slightest about. There was no way Iâd be able to shake hands with the genius Royal Court Magician, who was this countryâs greatest treasure.
âThat was rude of me.â
I turned my back to Carlyle and tried returning to where Laura was waiting for me.
âWait up.â
Carlyle beckoned me to stop.
âWhatâs your name?â
âItâs Albert.â
âAlbert, huh.â
Carlyle smiled sweetly.
âIâll remember that name of yours.â
After leaving me behind with those words, Carlyle went back to his post.
I likewise returned to where Laura was.
âGreat work out there! You were fantastic, Albert!â
âWas I?â
âAbsolutely! You were able to fire a spell at the Carlyle! Opportunities like that come once in a lifetime!â
âYeah⊠youâre right.â
I didnât really care about it, but thinking about it now, it was quite the peculiar ordeal.
If it was going to end up like that anyway, maybe I shouldâve let loose a serious Magic Arrow. Carlyle told me not to hold back, so I shot an arrow with around the same power as my first and second shot, but itâs not like I went all-out.
Well, my goal wasnât to defeat him. I should be happy I made some good memories, I guess.
âAh! My number was called! Iâll be back!â
âYeah. Iâll be rooting for you.â
Laura fluttered away to the front.
âMagic Arrow! Magic Arrow! Magic Arrow!â
The three arrows Laura shot flew to the target.
They all hit the bullseyeâis what I would like to say, but they all hit the target without missing.
Sheâd get decent marks with that.
When I looked at the other examinees, I saw people outright failing to reach the target. There were even some people aiming at Casper the Ghost himselfâit was downright awful.
I called out to Laura, who came back after she finished.
âThat wasnât half bad.â
âYes! I was nervous, but Iâm glad I didnât mess up!â
However, she tilted her head with a worried expression.
âItâd be nice if I could get a good score, but⊠What do you reckon?â
Magic Arrow is a spell many magicians learn first to establish their foundation.
Thatâs why if you become a Magic Arrow researcher such as myself, you can get a good grasp on a magicianâs power just by looking at their Magic Arrow.
Laura was well-disciplined for her age.
She was surely a magician blessed in both talent and familial environment.
A complete 180 from me.
Which is whyâ
I spoke to Laura with a broad smile.
âItâs alright. I believe you passed.â
âItâd be great if that were trueââ
Before she could finish, Laura cheered herself up in a flash.
âNo! If itâs Albert whoâs praising me, then I feel like everything will be alright!â
It seems like she has some kind of faith in me.
âŠI donât really get why she feels that way, but if Iâm able to reassure Laura, then Iâm happy.
Thus, the first examination ended.
If my memory serves me right, this marks the end of the practical skill portion. Next, weâll be taking a written examination, and the test will come to an end.
Right, if my memory isâ
The examiner raised a loud voice.
âI will now commence part two of the practical exam!â
I guess it isnât over yet.
I suppose ten years was too big of a gap.
âThe second part of the exam will be via Dispel Magicâa mana dispelling test! We will now hand all of you an item enchanted with a spell that weâve prepared beforehand; Your goal is to dispel that spell within a limited time frame.â
ââŠThis is bad.â
The instant I heard the examinerâs instructions, I muttered to myself.
