CHAPTER 5: THE EXTRAORDINARY ARE BAFFLING TO THE ORDINARY
Clank, clank, clankclankclankclank.
Making a loud clanking noise, the fragments of the no-longer-existing target and target prop scattered to the ground.
âŠI think I broke it.
I faced the examiner and spoke to him.
âIt kinda just broke with a single shot? What should I do about my second shot?â
ââŠW-Wu-WuhâŠâ
I couldnât tell what he was trying to say.
âDid I forget to apply Defense Magic to itâŠ? No⊠It was fine when I shot it with my Magic Arrow at the beginning, so then whyâŠâ
He muttered this and that.
âExaminer?â
After I questioned him again, he realized I was talking to him.
ââŠA-Ah, yeah. Sorry, but there seemed to have been a mistake of sorts. Could you try again with that target over there?â
âUnderstood.â
After agreeing, I moved to the neighboring target.
And thenâ
âMagic Arrow.â
âBoom!
Together with a crash, the target was shred to atoms.
âNONONONONONO! HOW THE HELL IS THIS EVEN HAPPENING?!â
The examiner screamed.
âThereâs no way not only one, but TWO targets are faulty! Youâre cheating in some way or the other, arenât you?!â
âCheatingâŠ?â
âExactly. Even if we were to assume that both of the targets were faulty, thereâs not a snowballâs chance in hell that a lowly MAGIC ARROW could destroy BOTH of them to that extent!â
The examiner pointed at me and screamed.
âAdmit it! Youâre cheating, arenât you?!â
ââŠ!?â
âYouâre disguising some other spell as Magic Arrow, right?!â
Well, this was awkward.
Thereâs no way that could be true.
I couldnât use any other spell than Magic Arrow, after all.
That said, only I knew that. The agitated examiner had no way of guessing my circumstances.
If I knew itâd end up like this, I shouldâve just held back like I did when I shot down that bird. The examiner said âThey wonât be destroyed by the likes of you examinees, so donât hold back and shoot away!â, so I ended up just blasting the targetâŠ
It happened when I was worrying about what I should do next.
ââWhat seems to be the issue here?â
Royal Court Magician Carlyle.
He stared at us with a gentle expression.
The examiner answered his question. Straightening his back, he reported the events to Carlyle in a strained voice.
âYes! This examinee right here lied about using Magic Arrow, so Iâm suspecting that he was using an entirely different spell! I was just investigating the credibility of my claim!â
âWoow. And why do you think that?â
âThere is no way a mere Magic Arrow could destroy a target enchanted with Defense Magic. To top it off, he destroyed two of them in a row! I canât help but believe he is cheating!â
âI see.â
Carlyle nodded his head continuously.
âHey, are you cheating?â
âNo, Iâve done nothing of the sort.â
âGot it, got it.â
After nodding with a wide grin, Carlyle turned to the examiner and spoke.
âHe just said he didnât. I mean, does it really matter?â
âB-But!â
âDo you have proof?â
ââŠHuh?â
âProofâIâm asking if you have any concrete evidence that he cheated.â
âIâm afraid I donâtâŠâ
âThen I guess cheatingâs out of the question.â
Carlyle shrugged.
âExaminer, your job is to evaluate the examinees and to see through any irregularities. Sucks for you, but if you canât find any concrete evidence that he cheated, itâs your loss, buddy.â
ââŠâ
âSay, have you tried using analysis magic on the spell he used?â
âThat, I cannot use⊠Can Lord Carlyle?â
âYeah, and?â
The examiner had a look of sudden hope on his face.
âT-Then, use that toââ
âNah.â
Carlyle gave a dry laugh.
âIâm an inspector, no matter what may happen. I canât assist in anything related to evaluation.â
After instantly rejecting the examiner, Carlyle patted my shoulder.
âWith that said and done, youâve completed the first examination for the time being. Wait for the next test.â
âNo, itâs not over yet.â
I shook my head. A look of doubt spread across his gentle face like a fissure.
âWhat could you possibly mean?â
âThe test requires I shoot three Magic Arrows. Iâve yet to shoot the last one.â
âHahahahahaha! I see! Youâve intrigued me!â
ââŠIâm intriguing?â
âYou do have a point. Advocating for your rights is the correct move. But yâknow, we only have so many targets. Itâll be troubling if you break anymore.â
After placing his hand on his chin and carefully deliberating the next best move, Carlyle spoke again.
âIâve got it! As a special service, you can shoot me with your Magic Arrow!â
The surrounding examinees began kicking up a stir.
âYou?â
Carlyle grinned broadly in response to my question.
âItâd probably be fine for me to act as a substitute target.â
âL-Lord Carlyle! Surely you jest!â
The examiner panicked and wedged himself in.
âI-If thereâs even the slightest chance you are injuredâ!â
With a thin smile, Carlyle seized the examiner with a piercing side-glance.
âYou dare imply that IâThe Royal Court Magician, ranked as a Sevenâwould be hurt?â
âN-Never! I-I, I didnât mean it in that sense! But, if thereâs even a 1 in 10,000 chanceâ!â
â1 in 10,000? Make that 1 in 100,000,000.â
Carlyle waved his hands back and forth.
âSo? Whaddya think?â
âI donât mind.â
I answered instantly.
âI donât see a problem as long as Iâm able to shoot my Magic Arrow.â
âGreat, great. Things have started heating up.â
Carlyle briskly walked over to where the broken target once was.
âIs this distance okaaay?â
Carlyle stuck his right hand out.
âHard Protection!â
A perfectly circular shield formed from Carlyleâs right hand.
âCome now, Iâm ready when you are. Donât hold back now. Got it?â
âUnderstood.â
I pointed my right hand at Carlyle.
The next moment, I spoke the words that acted as the trigger.
