그래, 무서웠고 필요한 경험이었다.

이번 일로 레슬리는 사랑받고 싶다는 미약한 희망을 완전히 깨 버렸 으니까. 그리고 그 빈자리를 대신할 것을 찾았으니까.

I don’t know why they threw me in the fire, but it certainly would have been related to Eli. So I cried.

쓴웃음을 지으며 레슬리는 팔을 들어 가장 먼저 불이 붙었던 왼팔을 바라보았다.

With a wry smile, Leslie lifted the arm that caught fire and stared it.

화상의 흔적. 그리고 그 위에 붕대가 어설픈 솜씨로 감겨 있었다.

Traces of burns. And a bandage on it was wrapped with a dreadful skill.

제대로 상처를 가려 주지도 못하는 서툰 솜씨를 보아하니 하녀나 하인이 대강 감아 놓은 듯 보였다.

It seemed as if the maid or servant that had wrapped the wound had a very clumsy skill.

힘이 필요해.

I need strength.

자신을 지켜 줄 힘이 필요했다. 아무리 강한 무력이 있어도 자신은 고작 열두 살.

잠깐 제 팔을 바라보던 레슬리가 실내화에 발을 넣고 움직이자, 그림자 속에 숨어 있던 무언가가 한 발짝 따라왔다.

When Leslie, who was looking at my arm a moment ago, put her foot in the slipper and moved, something hiding in the shadows followed her.

“……..괜찮아.”

“…It’s okay.”

살짝 웃어 보이자, 어둠은 제자리로 돌아갔다.

When I smiled a little, the darkness returned to its place.

후작가의 딸이 머무는 방이라는 게 믿기지 않을 정도로 허름한 방을나서 한 발짝, 한 발짝 밑으로 걸음을 옮기니 그녀를 감싸는 분위기가 달라졌다.

더럽고 초라한 자는 발도 들이지 말라는 분위기가 풍겼지만, 거침없이 발을 내밀었다.

My dirty and shabby feet reeked of shouldn’t be allowed in there, but I stepped in without hesitation.

예전이었다면 이 복도에 발을 내 디딜 생각 따위 하지도 못하고 빙 돌아갔을 것이다.

Sister Eli would have been angry just because I was walking around the hallway in front of her room.

Sister was like warm light, while Leslie was its shade. It was a loud word among the people.

그리고 언제나 후작 부인이 자신에게 세뇌하듯 매일 하던 말이었다.

And the marchioness brainwashed her every day.

‘레슬리, 거울을 보렴. 거울 보고 너와 시선을 맞춰! 자, 이제 말해 보렴. 너는 어떤 아이라고?’

‘Leslie, look in the mirror. Look at yourself in the mirror! Now tell me what kind of child you are?’

‘쓸모없는 아이….’

‘A useless child…’

‘그래, 그나마 네가 쓸모 있어지는 길이 어떤 길이라고 했었지?’

‘That’s right but, what are you decent at?’

‘언니를 위해 사는 삶이라고 하셨 어요….’

‘Living a life for my sister…’

그렇게 대답하면 아주 드물게 후작 부인은 자신을 보며 웃어 주었다.

Very rarely, Mrs. Marquis smiled at her.

그게 기뻐서, 어머니가 자신을 보며 웃어 준다는 거, 그것 하나가 너무도 기뻐서 그렇게 매일 거울을 보며 어머니의 뜻대로 ‘쓸모없다.’ 라는 말을 되새겼다.

It is delightful to see that mother smiles at herself and that she is so happy that I look at the mirror every day and is ‘useless’ as mother wants.

그게 자신의 자존감을 깎아먹고, 계속 억누르는 계기가 되는지도 모 르고.

Cutting down her self-esteem, continuously suppressing her chance.

‘이젠 듣지도 말하지도 않을 거야.’

‘From now on, I won’t listen nor speak to them.’

작게 고개를 까딱이며 걸음을 재촉하는데, 어디선가 두런거리는 목소리가 들려왔다.

As I quickened my pace, I heard a voice somewhere.

“반년이라고요?”

“Half a year?”

부드러운 바람이 소리로 표현되면 이런 느낌이 들까 싶을 정도로 맑고 고운 목소리.

A soft and clear voice that sounds like a soft wind.

엘리 언니의 목소리였다.

It was Eli’s voice.

“어떻게 제가 반년을 기다려요!”

“How can I wait half a year!”

“아가, 내 사랑스러운 엘리야.”

“Sweetie, my lovely Eli.”

짜증을 부리듯 칭얼거리는 목소리 뒤로 곧 후작의 목소리가 들려왔다.

The Marquis’ voice was heard right away after that tantrum.

“그때가 되어야 가장 적당한 날이 되는 걸 어떻게 하겠니. 네가 참아라.”

“We’ll know when the right time comes. You be patient, please?”

“아휴, 속상해요. 저 멍청한 건 왜 거기서 튀어나와서 제대로 불에 먹 히지 않은 것인지.”

“Geez, how displeasing. Why did that idiot not get burned by the fire?!”

그 뒤를 이어 볼멘 목소리로 엘리가 투덜거렸다.

After that, Ellen grumbled in a sullen voice.

“덕분에 저는 어둠을 깨우치지 못 했잖아요. 제물을 바쳐야 제가 능력 을 제대로 사용할 수 있을 텐데. 이 런 희미한 힘만 사용한다면 사람들 이 뭐라고 하겠어요? 이런 힘으로 가문의 부흥을 가져올 수 있을 거라 고 생각하는 건 아니시겠죠?”

“Because of her, the powers within me weren’t awakened! If we had successfully sacrificed her, then I would be able to properly use my powers! What will people think of me if I can’t properly use my powers?”

…뭐?

…What?

레슬리는 저도 모르게 살짝 열린 틈으로 방 안을 바라보았다.

Leslie looked into the room with a small open gap.

그리고 깨달을 수 있었다. 그녀의 언니 엘리 역시도 어둠의 힘을 깨웠다는 걸.

And I realized. Her sister Eli also awoke her dark power.

하지만 너무도 미약한 힘이라 제대로 쓸 수조차 없는 것이다.

But it is too weak to be able to use properly.

“아버지는 저 애를 아끼시는 거죠, 그래서 일부러 살리신 거죠?”

“Father, the reason you keep that girl alive because she is precious to you, isn’t it?”

누가 봐도 억지스러운 말이었다. 후작은 그녀를 창끝으로 눌러 찍으 면서까지 불길 속에 집어넣지 않았 던가.

It was difficult to see anyone. Then she did not put her in the flames until she pressed the small end of her window.

하지만 뒤이어 들려오는 말은 그 것보다 더 충격적인 말이었다.

But the words that followed were more shocking than that.

“아가, 저건 오직 너를 위해 낳은 자식이란다. 네가 혹여라도 힘을 깨 우치지 못한다면 황궁에서 살 널 위 한 시녀로, 네가 힘을 깨우친다면 네 힘을 증폭시킬 제물로 계획해서 낳은 거지.”

“Sweetie, that child was born for your benefit. If you hadn’t awakened your powers, I would’ve put you as a lady in waiting at the palace, but since you did, we gave birth to her for the sole purpose of transferring her magic to you.”

레슬리는 제 귀를 의심했다. 도무 지 지금 상황이 이해되지 않았다.

Leslie could hardly believe her ears. She did not understand the situation now.

“저게 힘을 깨달으면 어떻게 해요.”

“What if she awakens her powers too?”

“그럴 리가 없어. 자, 보렴. 너의 아름다운 밀색 머리카락도, 이 녹음을 담은 눈동자도, 모두 스페라도 가문의 특성이지. 하지만 저건 둘중 하나도 가지고 태어나지 못했어. 가장 쓸모 있는 제물이 가지고 태어 나는, 새하얗게 새어 버린 노파를 닮은 머리카락이지 않니.”

“There’s no way that’ll happen. Your golden hair and green eyes are all characteristics of the Sperado family. While she doesn’t even possess these characteristics. Her hair is white like that of an elderly woman.”

“……제가 아렌도 님을 만날 때 같이 만나게 하셨잖아요?”

“…When I met sir Arlendo didn’t you make me meet him with her?”

제 아비의 말이 퍽 마음에 들었는 지 한층 누그러진 목소리로 엘리가 말을 내뱉었다.

Eli had spoken out in a more relaxed voice that my father liked.

“그건 저것이 제물이 되지 않았더 라면, 네 뒤를 따라 시녀처럼 움직 여야 하니 그랬던 거지. 황자님께 차를 엎는 바람에 사교계에 데뷔시 킬 일은 없어졌다만.”

“If that child wasn’t a sacrifice, I would’ve made her your maid. If she didn’t spill tea on the prince, then she wouldn’t be debuting at the party.”

“사교계에도 내보내실 작정이셨나 요!?”

“You were planning on making her attend the party?!”

“설마! 그럴 리가 있겠니. 저건 너를 위한 거라니까. 사랑스러운 내딸, 엘리야. 사교계의 이야기가 나왔 으니 말이다. 슬슬 드레스를 맞출 때가 되지 않았니?”

“No way! Of course not. That’s for you. My lovely daughter, Eli. The story came out in the social circle. Isn’t about time for you to put on the dress?”

그 뒤로 다정한 부녀의 대화가 들 려왔지만, 레슬리는 도망치듯 다락 방으로 올라왔다.

After listening to the father-daughter conversation, Leslie ran up to the attic room.

대화가, 마치 괴물이 크르륵거리는 소리 같아 역겨워 더는 듣고 있을 수가 없었다.

The conversation was disgusting, like a monster’s sound, and I couldn’t hear anymore.

‘내 탄생도, 내 삶도, 내 죽음 도……. 다 엘리 언니를 위한 거였 다고?’

‘My birth, my life, and my death… Everything was for my sister Eli?’

그걸 계획해서 나를 낳은 거였어. 모든 게 다 처음부터 계획된 거였어.

They gave birth to me as planned. Everything was planned from the beginning.

만약, 엘리 언니가 힘을 깨우치지 못했더라면 황궁에 들어갈 엘리의 시녀 역할로, 엘리가 힘을 깨우친다면.

If Eli didn’t awaken her power, she would become a lady in waiting in the Imperial Palace, and if she did awaken them,

“제물로 나를 불에 넣을 계획이었 구나…”

“They were planning on throwing me into the fire as a sacrifice…”

예상은 하고 있었지만, 실제로 들으니 그 충격이 강해 레슬리는 눈물 을 떨궜다.

후작가의 인간들은 그녀에게 밑바닥을 보여 주었다. 절벽에 떨어졌을때 느꼈던 분노가, 절망이 다시 한번 그녀를 덮쳤다.

Then the Marquis’ people showed her the bottom. The anger felt when she fell on the cliff, the despair once again came upon her.

“이 아침부터 어디를 가는 거냐.”

“Where are you going so early in the morning.”

레슬리는 덤덤한 눈으로 후작을 바라보았다.

Leslie looked at the Marquis with calm eyes.

머리까지 꼼꼼히 뒤로 넘기고 멀끔한 차림을 한 후작은 평범한 중년 귀족 남성이었지만, 레슬리의 눈에는 괴물이나 다름없어 보였다.

The Marquis is an ordinary middle-aged nobleman with his hair combed back and cleanly dressed, and Leslie’s eyes’ looked like the ones of a monster.

“이젠 대답도 하지 않는 거야? 쓸 모없는 것.”

“And now you don’t reply? Useless trash.”

자신을 불구덩이로 밀어 넣은 일은 아무 일도 아니지만, 제 물음에 대답하지 않는 건 중요한 일이라는듯 후작이 낮게 혀를 찼다.

Pushing me into the fire was nothing, not answering the question is what’s important, it seems that the Marquis has a low tongue.

그 모습을 잠시 보고 있다가 레슬리는 천천히 입을 열었다.

After staring at him for a while, Leslie slowly opened her mouth.

“제가 쓸모없다고요?”

“I’m useless?”

분명 사과를 할 줄 알았는데. 되레 물음이 돌아왔다.

He thought I would apologize. I returned the question back.

도망갈 줄 알았는데 한 발짝 더 다가오는 레슬리를 보며 후작은 눈을 찌푸렸다.

He thought I was going to run away, but he watched Leslie coming one step closer and then frowned.

“그럴 리가요. 잘 생각해 보세요, 스페라도 후작님.”

“I don’t think so. Think about it, Marquis Sperado.”

생긋, 미소가 입가에 걸렸다. 어딘가 섬뜩한 미소에 후작이 오히려 뒤로 한 발짝 물러났다.

Smiling sweetly, with a smile at the corner of one’s mouth. Somewhere of that frightening smile made the Marquis take a step back.

“제가 없으면 가장 곤란할 사람이 당신…… 아닐까요?”

“If I’m not here you would be in a difficult situation… Right?”

“뭐, 뭐?”

“Wha- What?”

평소와는 다른 행동, 다른 말투에 후작은 미간을 좁혔다. 죽다 살아났더니 미친 게 아닐까, 하는 생각마저 들 정도였다.

Unlike usual behavior, after narrowing down the other small talk. Even though I thought I was going crazy.

“네가 그 불길 속에 한 번 들어갔 다 왔다고 태도가 건방져졌구나. 다시 매를 맞아야 정신을 차릴 참이냐?”

“You’ve become very cheeky just because you survived the fire! Do I need to beat some sense back into you?”

까드득 이를 가는 소리와 함께 후작이 낮은 목소리로 레슬리를 위협 했다.

The Marquis threatened Leslie in a low voice.

“그게 다 네 언니를 위한 일이고, 그게 다 이 가문을 위한 일인데.”

“This is all for your sister, for the family.”

“그럼 들어가 보세요.”

“Then jump in yourself.”

“뭐?”

“What?”

레슬리는 고개를 까닥거리며 다시 후작의 말을 받아쳤다.

Leslie answered back to the Marquis once again.

“들어가시라고요. 직접. 저는 이제 안 들어갈 거예요.”

“Go jump in the fire yourself. I won’t do this anymore.”

거기까지 말한 레슬리는 이제 할말이 없다는 듯 몸을 돌려 밖으로 향했다.

Leslie said that there was nothing to say now, turned around and went out.

“너, 거기 안……!”

“You, don’t…!”

후작은 말을 잇지 못했다. 갑자기 까맣게 시야가 점멸했다.

The Marquis didn’t say anything after that. His field of view suddenly flickered.

“흐어억.”

“Ugh.”

후작이 괴상한 소리를 내며 비틀 거리는 사이 레슬리는 문을 빠져나 갔다.

As the Marquis twisted in a weird voice, Leslie exited the door.

후작의 눈을 가렸던 어둠이 그녀의 발자국을 따라 왔다.

The darkness that covered the Marquis’ eyes followed her footsteps.

그리고는 문 앞에 대기하고 있던 새하얀 마차에 거침없이 올라탔다.

Then I got on a white carriage that was waiting in front of the door.

“레슬리 아가씨, 이건 엘리 아가씨 를 위한 마차입니다.”

Miss Leslie, this carriage is for Miss Eli.

하인과 마부가 당장 내리라는 듯무섭게 그녀를 노려보았다.

The servant seemed to be scared and wanted her to come down from the carriage immediately.

레슬리는 단 한 번도 혼자서 후작 가에서 마차를 이용해 본 적이 없었다.

Leslie had never used a carriage from the Marquis before.

언제나 후작 영애라는 말이 아까울 정도로 걸어 다녔고, 그나마 신전에 기도를 올리러 갈 때 하인들이타는 마차에 몸을 실을 수 있었다.

The Marquis always used a carriage worth a lot for her esteemed daughter, while I went on the servant’s carriage when I went to pray to the temple.

거기다 이 새하얀 마차는 엘리가 가장 아끼는 마차로 수도에 단 두대뿐인 마차였고, 엘리의 자랑이었 다. 그녀 외엔 후작조차 감히 타지 못했던 마차였다.

And this white carriage was Eli’s favorite carriage, the only two carriages in the capital, and Eli’s pride. No one dared use that carriage beside her.

그런데 레슬리가 당당하게 엘리를 위한 마차에 올라탄 것이다.

By the way, Leslie was riding on a carriage for Eli.

“알아. 신전으로 가자.”

“I know. Take me to the temple.”

가볍게 두 사람의 말을 무시한 레슬리는 머리를 정리해 귀 뒤로 넘겼다.

Leslie, who ignored the words of the two men, tucked her hair behind her ear.

“미치셨습니까? 엘리 아가씨가 금 방 나오실 거란 말입니다. 당장 내 리 …….”

“Have you gone crazy? Miss Eli is coming out soon. Get out now…”

하인 하나가 성급히 다가와 그녀 를 끌어 내리려는 듯 팔을 꽉 잡았다. 엘리를 유독 잘 따르는 이 하인은 평소에도 레슬리를 거칠게 다루는 데 거리낌이 없었다.

One of the servants approached hastily and grabbed her arm as if to pull her down. This servant, who follows Eli with her poisonous attitude, has always been unconcerned with the rough handling of Leslie.

잠시 그 하인을 바라보다 레슬리 는 손을 들었다.

Leslie looked up at the servant for a moment and then raised her hand.
