A few days passed since the conception death of the âBright Red Jäger (tentative name)â.
Hashima Itsuki continues to sleep under the kotatsu, playing his portable games and reading books from time to time.
To a bystander, such an act was merely him being lazy. However, it was an imperative part of novel creation.
At this point, Itsuki is thinking of new ideas to replace the âBright Red Jäger (tentative name)â.
Ideas were not something that could be thought of by bucking up
into work mode and sitting in front of a computer; it typically comes
from relaxing and doing things unrelated to work. To be specific, like
playing games, reading books, having a shower, taking a dump, and so on.
Ideas will suddenly drop in just like that.
For an author, playing and rolling around lazily is an important topic too. Itâs true. Please, believe it.
At this moment, besides Itsuki himself, Fuwa Haruto and Kani Nayuta were in the room, holed up under the kotatsu.
Haruto made a visit after leaving the editorial branch, and was
on his tablet, finishing up the rest of his report. Nayuta had nothing
to do but to run to Itsukiâs room and fool around, giving Haruto a âI
wonât be able to spend alone time with senpai here, shoo shooâ curse
look.
âRight, Iâm done!â
Haruto finishes his work, and puts down the tablet, saying,
âAre you done? Then hurry back now, you man slut of a Prince.â
âStop calling me man slut, Gerota-chan.[13]â
Nayuta spat without changing expression, and Haruto too retorted back with a smile on his face.
Thereâs a game called âMust be Popularâ[14],
and the contest was about âwho is the most popular with girls at
schoolâ, a board game that would seem to cause anyone to rip their
friends faces apart. Back then, when everyone was playing this game,
Haruto won with an overwhelming party, beating Nayuta and the other
players, and from then on, Nayuta would call Haruto âMan Slut Princeâ.
The reason for âGerotaâ was because Nayuta vomited onto Itsuki on the day of the awards ceremony, and Haruto saw it.
âAnyway, how are you doing there?â
Haruto asked Itsuki, whoâs playing his PSP with a scowl.
ââŚNot good at all. The Murasama wouldnât drop for me. I really want to kill the development staff now.â
âIâm asking about ideas for your new work, not asking you how are you doing playing your latest âElminageâ.â
Hearing that, Itsukiâs face got darker.
âThatâs worse.â
Itsuki answers straight to be point, and Haruto gives a bitter smile.
âSenpai, come do pervy things with me to change the moodââ
âDonât want to.â
Itsuki cut off Nayutaâs words without a second thought.
âThen letâs do something to change the mood.â
Haruto said.
âFuuââ Itsuki sighed, and slowly got up, putting his PSP on the kotatsu. He was indicating that he accepted Harutoâs proposal.
ââŚSo you accept the man slut Princeâs proposal.â
Nayuta noted unhappily.
âLet me thinkâŚâ Haruto pondered for a while, and said, âLetâs play Turtle to get our heads moving.â
âââŚ!ââ
Itsuki and Nayuta looked completely tense.
âAre youâŚreally seriousâŚâ
âTo be expected of you, man slut Prince. You like turtles that much?â
âHm? If you arenât confident, letâs change games, alright?â
Harutoâs little taunt baited both of them immediately.
âDonât be silly! Have you forgotten that I have a perfect undefeated record when it comes to playing this game!?â
âIâll advise you not to get too cocky about this, man slut Prince.â
âAlright then, letâs play. Also, your memory is way off, Itsuki.â
Turtle gameâofficially known as âLateral Thinking Puzzleâ, is a
kind of mystery game, and one of the classic questions âTurtle Soupâ has
become a symbolic term associated with it.
The rules were as followâthe questioner has to come up with one,
and the ones answering could ask of hints from the questioner, who then
can only answer Yes or No, and this continues until the final answerâs
derived.
For a specific example âA certain man went to a restaurant and
had some turtle soup. The man called in the chef, and asked âIs this
really turtle soup?â and the chef answered âthatâs rightâ. The man left
the restaurant, and killed himself. Why is that?â
Then, the ones answering the question can ask questions like
âdoes the man have any allergy?â, or âDid the chef lie to the man?â,
questions that can only be answered with Yes or No. If the truth can be
discovered at the end of all this, the one asking the question wins.[15]
There is no need for additional tools, so such games are very
trendy in author meetings. There are similar questions that can be found
online, and there are collection books of such stories sold in the
market.
Itsuki and Haruto would typically come up with their original
problems when playing such games, and limit the number of questions to
be asked when playing.
Of course, it wouldnât be difficult for the questioner to win if
he designs a ridiculous incident with a truth nobody can answer.
However, once the truth is revealed, if the question is really a âlame
questionâ nobody could agree with, the questioner will be condemned with
harsh, cruel words like âyou still have a lot more to work on before
being a proâ, or âTry aiming for the newcomer prize againâ, or âwe can
tell how twisted your fetishes are from your questionsâ, or âand you
dare to ask such a lame question. I see that thereâs something really
wrong with your headâ, so harsh are their words that even if they do
win, theyâll be mentally traumatized as a result.
Thus, the issue here would be whether anyone could design a
wonderful question that had a chance of being answered in a limited
number of questions, and that anyone could be convinced after hearing
the answer.
For authors, Turtle Soup is a terrifying game that forcefully stakes an authorâs pride on the line.
âNow then, whoever thinks of a question first shall start. Limit of 15 turns. Alright, letâs start.â
Haruto gave the signal, and the 3 authors start to think of all kinds of questions.
After 3 minutes or so, âRight!â Itsukiâs the first to raise his hand.
âIâll start first.â
âAhn, senpai, you can start on me whenever you like.â
âShut up already.â
Itsuki dampened Nayutaâs mood, and changed the question.
âA certain guy got married. The one heâs married to is ugly, has a
terrible personality, and has no charm to her at all. A perfectly
flawed person inside out. But the guy isnât unhappy at all, and has a
happy life. Whyâs that?â
âThe girlâs his little sister, right?â âIsnât it because the girlâs his little sister?â
Nayuta and Haruto answered at once.
Itsuki looked so stunned his face was cringing,
âIm-ImpossibleâŚhow did you guess it without asking a questionâŚ! Are you able to read my heart or something!?â
ââŚItâs a totally dumb question, no doubt about it. But I guess
the description âperfectly flawed person inside outâ isnât used badly,
so Iâll spare you and wonât attack your personality.â
âItâs a custom to hear your raise such shitty questions every time, senpai.â
âRight, my turn next.â
After a pause, Haruto asked a question,
ââA certain author went way past the due date, but the editorial
branch did not reprimand the author, but was really grateful for that.
Whyâs that?â
Both Itsuki and Nayuta widened their eyes.
They had a few experiences of missing the deadline completely,
and dragged on for so long that they were thoroughly told off by the
editorial branch. They could not think of how they would be thanked.
ââŚIs this a delusion of yours, you man slut Prince?â
âIs that considered a question? Nayu-chan?â
Nayuta immediately shook her head.
âNo, Iâll change the question a littleâŚis this something that happened in modern Japan?â
There were often questions that were set in Outer Space or Jomon Period[16], so one important point was to be certain of the background as soon as possible.
In the face of Nayutaâs question, âYes.â Haruto answered.
âYo-youâre kidding! That currently-rotten-to-the-core thing in
modern Japan called the Publishing Industry canât possibly have any
concerns for an author since it just keeps begging us to abide by our
deadlines, and those dream-like words canât possibly happen! Haruto!
Youâre an author too! You can understand, right!?â
âNo, I never missed a deadline before soâŚâ
âWhatâŚ! Are you serious!? Damned traitor!â
âHow about you think about why youâre a Man Slut Prince before you act like some goody two shoes!?â
âWhy is it that I end up being blamed in the end!?â
Faced with the unreasonable lecture from the duo, Haruto was taken aback.
âKukukuâŚletâs see if you choose whether to abide by deadlines or maintain our friendship.â
âSuch a wretched friendship.â
âYou took the virginity of many girls, and you canât break a single deadline?â
âI told you Iâm not a man slut!â
âThe regret formed from being unable to protect (the deadline) will make one stronger and gentler.â
âYou guys never had any intention of repenting, right!?â
âIf you donât dare to go past the deadline, do you think youâll be able to break your duck?â
âBreakâŚbreak my duckâŚ?â
Those were some meaningless words, but there was a strange
convincing feeling coming from Nayutaâs mouth, and that rattled Haruto,
but he shook his head immediately.
âS-stop trying to convince me to be a scumbag! Anyway, think about this one properly!â
âHmm, youâre rightâŚâ Itsuki ponders for a while, and says,
âA question then!âŚis that author a little sister?â
âI donât know if thereâs an older brother or sister involved, but
anyway, the answer to that is âNoâ. Just to add, the authorâs
background isnât important here.â
âImpossibleâŚnot a little sister, and praised for delayingâŚâ
ââŚCan you stop wasting the number of possible questions, senpai?â
ââŚSorry.â
Itsuki apologized sincerely, and then said,
ââŚBut since the authorâs background isnât importantâŚI guess
it has nothing to do with whether heâs a bestselling author or about to
be cannedâŚso I guess the pointâs about the editorial branch, right?â
âAh, I see!â Nayuta said, ââŚWas that hint a little too obvious?â Haruto looked a little perturbed.
âEh, was the editorial branch in some kind of emergency?â Nayuta asked.
âYes.â
âWould it have helped the editorial branch to break away from
that dangerous situation if the author missed the deadline on that day?â
Itsuki asked.
âYes.â
With consecutive affirmed replies, Itsuki and Nayuta could not help but smile.
However, they immediately showed grim faces after that.
ââŚâŚSo if he missed that deadline on that day, it would help solve the problemâŚwhatâs going onâŚâ
ââŚIf the authorâs work was published, would there be trouble with the editorial branch?â
Haruto thought for a while, and then answered Nayutaâs question,
âWho knows? I guess the answerâs âNoâ though.â He then shook his head, answering that.
âThatâs a vague replyâŚbut in any case, I guess itâs probably not because of the work itself.â
âI was wondering if itâs because there was a rip-off of certain
game character with strict copyright issues, or that Do***mon of
Shogakukan was used for the novelâŚ.â
âYouâre really thinking of terrifying things hereâŚâ
Both of them continued to think, and Itsuki suddenly had an idea,
âWaitâŚHaruto, repeat that question again.â
âNo problems. âA certain author went way past the due date, but
the editorial branch did not reprimand the author, but was really
grateful for that. Whyâs that?ââ
Haruto repeated the words exactly, and Itsuki asked, feeling unconfident.
ââŚThe due date youâre saying, refers to, that novelâŚno matter whether itâs manga original or game scriptâŚthe submission deadline for that novelistâs work?â
Haruto grinned,
âNo, of course.â
ââŚ! OhâŚthen, in any caseâŚ!â
âEh? Whatâs going on? Itâs not about being unable to meet the deadlineâŚ? I donât understand what that means?â
Itsuki ignored a completely bewildered Nayuta as the latter tilted her head, and continued to ask agitatedly,
âSo for the novelist, breaking the deadline would be doing so in the phyiscal sense!?â
âYes.â Haruto affirmed with a bitter smile.
âPhysicalâŚ? Ah!â
Nayuta too gave an enlightened look.
âWas the editorial branch room sealed up when the novelist went past the deadline?â
âYesâŚyouâre getting closer.â
âSo if the novelist exceeds the deadline, did all the people in the editorial branch lose consciousness?â
âYes. Some of them might not be knocked out, but nobody could move.â
Haruto seemed to have given up as he shrugged his shoulders, and Itsuki grinned gleefully, answering, âI got it.â
ââŚHereâs how it is. The windows and doors were sealed up,
resulting in carbon monoxide in the room that caused everyone in the
editorial branch to pass out from carbon monoxide posioning. A novelist
just happened to pop by, found that something was amiss, broke the doors and windows, saving the editorial branch from the crisis, and was thanked by everyone! âSimekiri[17]
here can refer to both the due date, and âplaces where everythingâs
sealed upââthe simekiri in this situation doesnât refer to the due date
of the draft, but that the editorial branch was sealed so tightly
thereâs no ventilation!â
âRight. Actually, I did also come up with why the carbon monoxide was formed, but I wonât nitpick on that. Your win.â
âFuhahahahaha!! This kind of question is too easy for me!â
Haruto smiled, Itsuki laughed out loud, and Nayuta clapped her hands, saying,
âFor a man slut Prince, I guess thatâs a decent question?â
âWhy thanks. Your turn next, Nayu-chan.â
âGot it. Iâll really shock you with this amazing question, so much that your p*nis wonât be able to get erect again.â
Nayuta said a chilling matter, and calmly stated her question,
âA man jumped. He died. Why?â
ââAh?ââ
The question was overly simple; Itsuki and Haruto both exclaimed in shock.
âLeaving that aside, are you sure thatâs all for your question?â Haruto asked.
ââŚIf this is a some kind of a shitty question where you canât
get the truth within 15 questions, Iâm going to humiliate you with
something worse than bitch, Lord Kani[18].
âNo problems.â
Nayuta promised confidently, and the duo started to think,
âDied after jumpingâŚ? Was it suicide from a building, or a failed jump from a skiâŚ? Erm, did the guy fall because he fell?â
âNo.â
âWhatâŚ?â Haruto was shocked, and continued asking, ââŚIs it
something similar to my question? Some kind of trap in the word
âjumpââŚ? ThenâŚdid the guy owe any debt?â
In the financial world, paying the interest and delaying the
principal loan back is called âjumpâ by experts in the industry. In
other words, Haruto assumed that it was a dispute over money.
But Nayutaâs answer wasâ
âI donât know. In any case, I guess itâs a ânoâ.â
âHe doesnât owe any debtâŚehâŚwas the guy killed?â
âNo.â
âDoes the guy have a little sister?â
âHow would I know about that!?â
Nayuta coldly retorted at Itsukiâs question âPlease, stop wasting
the questions with such a dumb oneâŚâ even Haruto could not help but
grumble.
âDid the guy jump from a high place?â
âNo.â
âNo!? So, he didnât die from a place high up, or his heart didnât
stop when he was fallingâŚitâs not a situation where he died falling
form somewhere high upâŚwas the guy hanged to death?â
âNo.â
âDid the guy die inside the room?â
âNo.â
âDid the guy die outside the room?â
âOutsideâŚnope, answerâs no.â
âNot inside or outsideâŚ? Did the guy die in a dangerous place?â
âRight.â
Haruto asked a few questions in succession, but was ultimately unable to grasp the crux of the situation.
ââŚDid it happen in modern Japan?â
Itsuki suddenly thought of the question Nayuta asked Haruto about, and tried asking. Soâ
ââŚNo.â
Nayutaâs eyeborws twitched as she answered, probably because she was rattled.
âIt didnât happen in modern Japan? So, is the setting based overseas?â
âYes. Probably.â
âProbablyâŚ?â
âSo it means that it doesnât matter whether itâs local or
overseasâŚ? But I get the feeling that the settingâs an important
pointâŚâ
And so, Haruto suddenly had an idea.
âDid this incident happen in reality?â
After a long pause, Nayuta replied,
ââŚNo.â
âAh, I seeâŚI think I get itâŚâ
Saying that, Haruto showed a bitter smile, appearing as though he was suffering from a migraine.
Itsuki was confused, and asked, bothered by this, âWhat does this mean?â
ââŚThis has something to do with gaming, right?â Haruto asked.
ââŚRight.â
Nyauta curled her lips as she answered,
And while she remained so, Haruto revealed the answer to this question in an inquisitive manner,
âIs the man called Spelunker?â
ââŚRight.â
Nayuta nodded in regret.
âNayu-chanâŚto be honest, I think this questionâs really terrible. Well, itâs way better than Itsukiâs though.â
âMmmnnnâŚâ
Haruto sighed, giving a bitter smile, while Nayuta groaned in displeasure.
On the other hand, âHmm? Ahh? A video game?â Itsuki looked completely surprised.
âThereâs an old action game called âSpelunkerâ.â Haruto
explained. âThe protagonistâs an adventurer, and the objective is to
explore the ruins, but this protagonist dies all the time, whether by
the shit from the bats, or by places a little shorter than he is.
Anyway, the protagonist is infamous for having a weaker body than any
ordinary person, kicking the bucket at any given moment. There are
moments where if he jumps from a tall place, heâll die in mid-air before
he crashes into the floor.â
ââŚAhh, I think I saw it somewhere on the internet before! Itâs a famous shitty game, I remember, right!?â
âRight right.â
âSpelunker isnât some shitty game!!
Nayuta suddenly yelled out, looking displeased,
âItâs true that Spelunker-san dies because of anything, but if
you know that itâs the game rules, and cautiously play the game, youâll
understand that the game itself isnât unreasonable, that those that
didnât follow the game rules probably caused the protagonistâs death!
Lots of people who never played the game said itâs shitty because the
protagonist is a famous weak character.
âH-hehâŚâ âO-ohâŚ?â
Both Haruto and Itsuki were stunned to see Nayuta lash out so agitatedly.
âŚBack when Kani Nayuta was being a NEET, she was addicted to
freeware games spread around on the internet, and could purchase old
games by downloading. Even after becoming an author, she was passionate
about such retro games.
âSo, letâs play Spelunker.â
On Nayutaâs recommendation, Itsuki bought Spelunker on the Wii Virtual Console, and the trio challenged the game.
Later on, Haruto had a different understanding of the game, âItâs
very difficult, but still passable if youâre careful. Itâs not as
unreasonable as its infamy states.â However, Itsuki would die at the
beginning no matter how he tried, âItâs a shitty game alright!â and in
his shame and fury, he concluded.
However, Itsuki gained an inspiration, and submitted an idea âa
Spelunker little sister who dies to anythingâ to the editor for vetting,
