Chapter 55: Dried Meat
Since I planned to make yaki-onigiri for breakfast tomorrow, I moved the MP potion dish to lunch.
What should I make tomorrow morning then? I haven’t thought about it… Cola, a dish using cola…
I hung my head, feeling despondent.
「Ah, no, I’m not mad at you or anything. If you’re going to make it for breakfast, are you planning to wake up early to make it? Or are you going to make it now? You don’t have to push yourself.」
Rofas-san spoke in a panic.
「I’m not pushing myself at all! Um, you see, since you went through all the trouble to prepare the meat, I was wondering if I could use it.」
I said, attempting to make an excuse. If I told Rofas-san that I had to change the menu from yaki-onigiri to something else, he would apologize to me.
Ah, Bryce-kun, Kurtz-kun, and Kirika-chan would apologize to me too, probably.
I don’t mind handling all of the cooking, since I’m satisfied if everybody likes my food. I don’t want them to apologize to me.
「I see! You were waiting for the meat! Sorry about that! Come on, everyone, let’s process this quickly!」
In the end, Rofas-san apologized. But wait, it didn’t exactly feel like an apology…
「We should’ve done this before doing the special training, Bryce, since we can eat this tomorrow morning.」
They looked happy.
Phew, that’s good.
「I want to eat the boar meat you made us the first time, the really soft one!」
Kurtz-kun looked at me and said.
「The kakuni?」
「Kirika wants it too, it was really good.」
I see. But, there are so many dishes out there. Are they really okay with having something they ate before?
「Kakuni? That’s the really soft meat dish, right? Okay, can you make a lot? I want them in the bento too.」
Putting kakuni into a bento?
Ehh, but I was planning to make yaki-onigiri in the morning, and then use the MP potions to make something else for lunch… It doesn’t really work with kakuni, you know…?
「Anything that has a lot of juice in it doesn’t work well for bentos, you see?」
I said, attempting to reject the idea.
Well, unless we have an airtight sealed bento box, the meat juice will spill out. It would be like the situation where the smell of your bento spills out during class.
Ahh, I can imagine the juice from nikujaga spilling out, making it obvious what the kid sitting next to you was going to have for lunch…
Forget about airtight sealed bento boxes, we don’t even have proper bento boxes here. How can we bring kakuni around?

Rofas-san looked shocked again.
Hm, how should I describe it? He has a lot of expressions, I guess. Also, I understood something else.
This person is a「glutton」. He’s a「glutton with protein-filled muscles」. He doesn’t hold back on eating.
「Then, how about we dry the meat to remove the moisture?」
Bryce-kun suggested. Kurtz-kun yelled out loudly.
「If we dry the meat, then it’ll turn hard and tough, won’t it? No way! It’s so soft and delicious!」
「Haha, Kurtz, it’s okay. You’re staying in the hut, so you can eat the soft ones. I’m suggesting it for Rofas-san and I, since we’ll have to bring it with us. 」
Kurtz-kun looked relieved when Bryce-kun said that.
On the other hand, Rofas-san looked disappointed.
「I’m sick of chewing dried meat…」
Ahh… He rejected Bryce-kun’s suggestion completely.
Rofas-san turns into a disappointing person whenever it comes to food.
「Since our goal is to bring it with us rather than preserving it, we can just dry it overnight instead of drying it completely.」
Hm? Dry it overnight? That reminds me of sun-dried foodstuff though…
What happens to the meat if we dry it overnight?
「Bryce-kun, what happens to the meat if it’s dried overnight?」
「You’ve never tried it before? Let’s see, I think the boar we processed yesterday is in a similar state to one that’s been dried overnight. I’ll bring some over.」
The meat he brought over was that. If I were to describe the meat on the plate right now, it was like those dried out ones, like soft beef jerky… Hm, it’s closer to soft beef jerky, I guess.
If we sandwich them between bread, we can make something that’s similar to a hamburger, right? Maybe we can make something like that a roast beef sandwich?
I tried tasting one.
I bit into the overnight-dried meat.

Bryce-kun suddenly shouted for some reason.
Was I not supposed to eat this?
