Today was his first day of work, he was supposed to patrol in the morning but he got called in several times by his superiors to have a drink with them. After the superiors, his colleague then came over to boot lick him. He hadn't even introduce himself, everyone already knows his dad was the secretary for the city council, his uncle was the head of the city's police department, now they're curious about why is he working at this department.
They were supposed to leave work, but when Chi mentioned that he wanted to go for patrolling rounds, the team leader threw away his stuff and drove a car for him.
The sky has turned completely dark, there was fog blocked the rear mirror, blurring the streets lights. The streets were very much alive, the vendors still has that undying spirit even though its freezing out there, loads of shouting going on, the smell of the delicacy seeped through the spaces into the car.
Wu was on that very street, on his left was an uncle who sells roasted sweet potatoes, on his right was a cobbler
'Hey!' Wu greeted the cobbler beside him, 'How long have you been working here?'
The guy was squatting while smoking, he replied blandly, 'For almost two years now.'
'Did you get caught before?' Wu asked again.
He laughed, 'Never.'
'Wu was impressed, 'How did you do that?'
He didn't reply, the old man replied instead.
'He's the officer.'
Wu's big eyes were sparkling in the darkness.
'I'm a cop by the day, a vendor by night, I didn't have any choice. I have two kids at home, we couldn't survive with that little pay.'
Wu pursed his lips, looks like everyone was having a hard time.
'So I wouldn't get caught if I stick around with you?'
The guy spitted onto the ground, replied harshly.
'You can say that.'
Who knew, after he had said that, there was a siren from not far away. The guy's expressions changed suddenly, then quickly kept all his shoes, dashed at the opposite direction, a few other stalls followed him.
Wu was thinking whether to run, but he noticed the uncle was still standing still, looks like he had no intention to run.
'Why didn't you run?'
The uncle pointed at the guy selling watermelon confidently, he was tall and muscular, he even had tattoos on his arm. Looks like a tough opponent.
'He's called Heizi, he always helped us, normally the officers wouldn't dare to mess with him, he will help to cover both of us!'
After saying, the patrol car stopped in front the guy's stall, two officers got down from the car.
The uncle pointed to the leader beside Chi, 'That guy's a bastard! He always hit us, the one selling dried goods was beaten up by him, he even broke his arm!'
It's too dark here, Wu didn't see clearly who the uncle was talking about.
The two officers went to Heizi's stall, not sure what they said, they started a fight not long after. At first the leader pushed Heizi, Heizi returned with a punch immediately. Wu was about to stop the fight, he then saw the guy standing the leader lifted his leg, then kicked Heizi. A bulky man flew across the air after getting kicked, fell on the stall behind, the watermelons burst open.
The crowd gasped in shock, the uncle pushed his cart and left in a hurry.
Every vendor has escaped, the whole street was quiet, it's just Wu standing by his stall.
Soon, the two officers came to his stall.
Chi looked at Wu briefly, he was wearing a cap, he couldn't see his face clearly. He just saw his sharp chin and defined lips. He had a cigarette in his mouth, despite two figures hovered over him, he still remained calm.
Smoking let Wu clear his mind.
The leader spoke first.
'What are you waiting for?'
'Hey, did you shit your pants?'
'Stupid, I'm talking to you!'
'Do you want to get beaten up?'
'.......'
The leader talked non stop, Wu didn't even reply once. He finally lifted his head, his gaze meet Chi's. Then he slowly turned...picked up his pot into his arms...then turned again...staring at the tricycle not far away.
Chi only noticed the pair of black eyes, its strangely bright.
Wu took a sharp turn, splashed the whole pot of porridge onto Chi.
......
The whole street quieten down.
The leader felt a chill down his spine.
Wu thought Chi would dodge, who would have thought he would stand still. This potful of porridge stuck to Chi's lower half of his body. Run! You will die if you don't! Wu sprinted due north, he abandoned his tricycle and his pot.
The leader then reacted and chased after him, blocked Wu at the street entrance.
There was a brick by Wu's foot, he picked up and smashed it on his head. The brick shattered!
'Come at me! Come!'
The leader was agape.
Wu smashed another piece, shouted again, 'Why don't you hit me? Come! Weren't you guys using violence?'
The leader's legs gave in.
Chi suddenly moved towards him, Wu felt a strong presence of danger, like the weather suddenly got worse. He threw the brick away, he then ran at the speed of lightning. His shoe almost caught fire.
There were porridge everywhere on Chi's body. It's so sticky, he couldn't even run or walk properly, he then stopped running.
His burning gaze fixed on the running figure. You better no get caught by me!
