Chapter 4: First Hunt in Another World
Translated by Siv

My shotgun, the Remington M870, can hold two shots in the magazine and one shot in the chamber for a total of three shots. This is because the Japanese gun sword method stipulates that the number of slugs limited to the magazine is two.
However, in reality, the magazine of this gun has the capacity for four shots.
There is a spacer in the tube magazine under the barrel to prevent more than one shot. So, I removed the magazine cap, unplugged it, and removed the plastic parts’ spacer inside. (* 1)
If you do this in Japan, it would be a violation of the Firearm and Sword Law, thus carrying it in this state is illegal.
But this is a different world, so it doesn’t matter …
Then my shotgun became a 4 + 1 barrage.
I can’t put bullets in the chamber because it’s dangerous if it misfires. Currently, there are four shots in the tube magazine.
When shooting, you can shoot by hitting the fore-end with a Gashan.
Pump-action shotguns are often ridiculed as old-fashioned, but their simplicity and reliability are better than automatic or double-barreled guns.
I think that veteran grandpa has used it habitually. It has been used for a year and has never failed or malfunctioned. (* 2)
Besides, I bought gun oil via the magic bag to take care of the gun.
My last memory was that I fired three shots at the bear. If I left it idle, it might rust. I cleaned it off with a cloth soaked in oil. I wrapped a rag around a tree branch that has been finely cut with a knife and polished the inside of the barrel. Shotguns are easy to maintain due to their wide barrels.
There are various types of gun oil, but I use WD-40, a general-purpose lubricant. This one was enough. I’ve never had any trouble with it. Even firearm makers use this in their factories.
The scary thing was that I had no idea where to walk.
I wish I could meet someone, but I’m scared of being in such a mountainous area and a different world. The first person I might meet will find me suspicious, dangerous, and I don’t know if they will treat me in a friendly way.
No, I couldn’t understand the language in the first place, right?
Will I live alone in the mountains as it is?
That’s scary, isn’t it?
That’s why I climbed up a small hill and looked around.
There is a lake in the distance. There is also a village on the shore of the lake.
I don’t know who lives there, but since there were only half-timbered buildings, it’s probably humans or a race similar to it. Let’s aim for that for the time being.
You can understand something just by observing from a distance.
There is one more thing to check.
Can guns work in this world?
I have to do this.
The first thing I want to shoot is a small animal like a bird or a rabbit, but now I only have a half-rifle barrel, a scope, and a sabot slug.
Then. a deer, maybe a wild boar too?
I was a hunter in Hokkaido, so I’ve never seen a wild boar. I do not know much about them.
I took off my orange jacket and stored it inside the magic bag.
If I take this off, I’m in full-body forest camouflage. Only my hat was orange.
The orange jacket, which was the Hunting Club symbol, is a warning to prevent accidental friendly fire. I don’t need it anymore because I don’t have any friends.
Many animals, such as deer, are colorblind and do not identify with color. So there was no problem with wearing orange. It seems that birds can identify the color, though.
When I went down the hill, there was a deer… Only one.
It is clearly different from the deer that were in Japan, such as the native sika deer.
The horns are not branched … It looked like he’s smashed the horns of a cow.
I may have realized for the first time that this was a different world.
Isn’t a distance of about 80m? It hasn’t been noticed by me yet.
If you notice it and run, you can’t hit it with my arm. No, even a considerable veteran is unlikely to hit a running deer. The game is whether or not you can hit the first bullet.
My scope is 50m and is capable of zero-ing (* 3). The bullets are pulled by gravity and fly in a parabola, so you need to aim a little higher when shooting further than 80m. The scope I’m using is a Nikon slug hunter. Riflescopes made in Japan have a high reputation overseas and are trusted by many hunters. It depends on the bullet used, but when the magnification is 6 times that of the zoom lens, if you aim at the dot (* 4) just below the crosshair, it should land at exactly 100m. So I will aim at the middle of the crosshairs and dots.
I gently pull the fore-end so that it doesn’t make much noise and then let it slide back, careful not to make any noise either.
Sit flat on the ground, lean against a tree, entrust it, and place your elbows on your lap to support your gun. Place the fair hand(left handle) on your open palm, and do not hold it.
Lightly press the stock against your shoulder with your right little finger and aim with the scope.
You don’t need the power to hold a gun. It’s just an image that movies put in your head.
If you put a lot of effort into it and do something like holding it firmly, the recoil will change every time. Humans cannot be tense and hold a gun with the same force all the time. If you always want the gun to shoot steadily, it’s better to relax. I intend to receive the recoil with the weight of the gun. Of course, since it is not being held firmly, the gun will move in reaction to the shot fired, but as a result of the recoil, it means easier adjusting with the scope so that it hits the target.
The aim is around the base of the neck—a Neck shot.
It isn’t easy to aim at the head. Deer may not die instantly, even when shot in the abdomen, chest, and heart.
If you shoot the neck, the impact will be applied to the head, and the deer will fall with a single blow.
Bang!
The scope is dazzled by the orange flame, and the muzzle pops up.
Unlike movies and dramas, real guns have recoil and flames, so you can’t see the moment of impact on the scope. Quickly check the scope and see the deer you shot.
It collapsed!
Stand up and approach the deer.
I squeezed past the bushes, swiped the grove branches, and went down the slope, and on the way, I met a person.
She seemed surprised to see someone over here.
I was surprised to see her too.
Yes, she was a woman …
My first impression was tall!
Yeah, way taller than me. She’s as big as a volleyball player or a basketball player.
Long hair, shapely limbs, definitely a woman.
Wearing simple green clothes… carrying a big bow and arrows.
Her long blonde was braided and hung behind her neck. A fair-skinned foreigner with blue eyes …
ā€œEh… EK-SCUZU… MIE!ā€
ā€œHuh?ā€
Can’t you understand English?
ā€œOh, excuse me. Did you steal it?ā€
I showed a smile without knowing whether I was rude as a hunter because I’m not aware of the rules of this world, regardless of whether this person is an enemy or an ally.
Excuse me, did you disturb me? This alone should solve most of the troubles in Japan.
ā€œNo, I had just released it, but it seems to be at the same time.ā€
When I saw the deer, an arrow lodged between its eyebrows.
Great …….
I have a good arm.
I’m not speaking Japanese.
It’s not Japanese, but I understand the language.
And for some reason, the other person can understand my words.
For some reason, I’m not speaking Japanese …
Was I bilingual? Another world auto-correction?
ā€œMaybe you’re the source of the awesome sound that was just made?ā€
ā€œYesā€
Was it the gunshot? If you shoot with a shotgun, the sound can be heard over a 3KM radius.
ā€œWhat on earth did you use to kill it… I’ve never heard that sound.ā€
ā€œOh, with this.ā€
ā€œWhat is that?ā€
ā€œA Gun.ā€
ā€œWhat is Teppo?ā€
Don’t you know what a gun is? Is it because this is a different world? This person is equipped with a bow and arrows.
ā€œFrom here, I shoot copper grains at an invisible speed.ā€
Guns are usually lead bullets. A metal jacket is made by coating lead with copper.
However, in recent years, the use of lead bullets has been banned in Hokkaido. There are many cases where animals, which are natural monuments, eat lead bullets and die from lead poisoning. So now I’m using bullets made entirely of copper. That’s why it’s copper that’s being shot. It’s not a lead ball anymore.
ā€œā€¦ Wow. A Magic tool? A Magic tool? I’ve never seen or heard of such a thing. Are you a Mage?ā€
ā€œNoā€
ā€œYou’re human, right?ā€
ā€œYesā€
ā€œWhere did you release it?ā€
The gun is said to shoot, while the bow and arrow are said to release.
This person is a hunter specializing in bows and arrows.
ā€œFrom there.ā€
It points to the tree that I was leaning on before.
ā€œā€¦ From that distance… Amazing!ā€
She said with a smile. Isn’t she cute?
ā€œHmm… Then there is no choice but to divide it into portions. This is the place you hit.ā€
She pointed to the bleeding area at the base of the neck.
Did you hit the target? Was it a clean hit?
The Sabot slug grouping with my skill at 50m is about 5cm apart and at 100m is about 10cm apart. Since it was originally a shotgun, it does not have the accuracy and range of a rifle. I wonder if I was lucky this time.
ā€œAh … then, should we dismantle it here?ā€
ā€œNo! Wolves are gathering!ā€
Uh, are there wolves! That’s scary!
This is not Hokkaido. They are not extinct.
ā€œIt can’t be helped. I’ll go to the village. Follow me. Let’s divide there.ā€
ā€œIs that ok?ā€
ā€œGood. Um, can you carry this?ā€
ā€œā€¦ā€¦That’s impossible.ā€
ā€œHeyā€
With that said, she grabbed the fallen deer’s hind legs and front legs, lifted it, and placed it on her back, and carried it on his shoulders.
Great, yeah, yeah, yeah ――――! !!
What a strong woman!
Thud Thud Thud.
We started walking.
ā€œWhat are you doing? Come on.ā€
ā€œYes.ā€
ā€œHave this.ā€
ā€œYes!ā€
I pushed the shell latch from the Remington M870 loading port to pull out the bullets, empty the magazine, put my head through the sling, carried it on my back, and then received a large bow and quiver from her.
Thud thud thud
I wonder if it’s okay to keep on following this person…isn’t it a little…
ā€œI’m Saran. What about you? What’s your name?ā€
…… Well, well.
ā€œShin.ā€
ā€œOh, so it’s Shin, huh?ā€
Well, well, well…
ā€œIt’s an Elven village, but you don’t seem to hate elves.ā€
ā€œHah?ā€
ā€œThat’s good.ā€
Was she an elf? Ms. Saran.
Speaking of which, her ears are pointed. As I tried to looking sideways to avoid contact andĀ pulled out the bullets from the gun as usual.
I wonder if I shouldn’t have pulled it out as I can’t eat it with my hands dirtied.

* 1. spacer
This does not mean that Remington has made any parts specifically for Japan.
U.S. federal law requires that hunting shotguns be limited to two magazines to protect migratory birds, so every shotgun always has this replaceable spacer, which you should use to shoot birds. It is illegal if it is not attached. In most European countries, including the United Kingdom, many countries regulate the number of magazines to two.
* 2. Malfunction (Added on January 17, 2020)
Remington M870 is said to be highly reliable. Still, it seems that there are quite a few individuals that jam (poor pod ejection) due to the effects of cost reduction and quality deterioration. The fore-end does not move after shooting; the shotshell is not ejected and is caught in the bolt, etc. YouTubers in the United States have determined that this is due to the slight remaining cutting steps in the chamber where the rim of the shell rests (search for Remington 870 jam). It seems that troubles will be eliminated by polishing the step of 0.1 to 0.2 mm in height that remains at the width of 2 to 3 mm with a leutor to make it smooth. If you have such troubles with your M870, please give it a try.

* 3. Zeroing
Adjust the scope. The distance at which the bullet falls on the parabola and the aiming line, such as the scope cross, that is, the distance that the bullet hits in the middle of the crosshair, depends on the adjustment. How many meters to fit depends on the shooter. Based on this, aim slightly above or below according to the distance. The zero-in distance is called ā€œzero rangeā€ or ā€œzero distance.ā€ Some people call it zero set or zero settings.
* 4. Dot
Unique to Nikon BDC(Bread drop compensation) Aiming system. To be exact, a circle (ā—‹) is drawn instead of a dot. Unlike the evenly spaced scales such as Mildot, the feature is that the scales are evenly spaced according to the parabola’s trajectory. Nikon’s scope is made in the Philippines and is not domestically produced, but it is a reliable Nikon quality.
There are scenes in movies where the scope is adjusted according to the distance, but there are no hunters or snipers who actually do such things, and the scope that once zeroed in at the shooting range never touches the scale of the crosshairs. It is normal to see and correct the impact. Therefore, the hunting scope Adjustment dial has a cover not to turn even if you touch it.
