Chapter 30: Exam, Start! And Done! Another Request!
Either way, itâs time for the exam.
âWell then, let me explain the details of the exam thatâs going to take place from now on!â One of the examiners began to explain.
ďź
ââIn short: Head to the dungeon, go to the boss room, defeat the boss, pick up the token placed further inside the dungeon beyond the boss room, and come back.
Further inside, beyond the boss room At the place where you can find the Dungeon Core? Then I must be extra careful to not break it by accident!
I suppose thatâs all I need to pay attention to.
âRyoku, follow me while evading everything. Got it?â
âAye Sir!â
Yep, heâs so cute.
I gently stroked him.
âTsk! She was even given such a monster-like golem!? Sure makes me jealous how everything goes for S-Rankâs pet!â
âŚor something like that reached my ears, butâŚwhy would they describe a darling like Ryoku as a monster?
âOkay, start the exam.â
Upon that announcementâŚ
âI ainât gonna lose to some cheatinâ bitch!â
âLetâs go! We definitely wonât lose to someone like her!â
I felt like I heard such voices, but they sounded faint and distant.
âGyahaha, what a moron. How far ya think yaâll get while rushinâ ahead like that?â
âNo clue how to tackle dungeons as you got through everythinâ by connections, eh!?â
I had a hunch that I heard some buzzing in the far distance, but I actually think that Iâm probably going to finish this exam before the day is over at this rate.
ďź
At the dungeonâs entrance area a man, who seemed to be an examiner, yelped after getting startled, and inside the dungeon people cried out after getting surprised as well, but I ignored all of it.
Iâm in the middle of my challenge with the restriction of not being allowed to stop.
After running through the fairly spacious dungeon, I arrived at the boss room. I opened the door, and killed the boss in the next instant. Leaving the boss room, I headed deeper insideâŚ
Ah, I found a person.
âWhat is it!?â
âIâm an examinee, so please give me the token.â
âEh? Examinee, you sayâŚ? When did it start?â
âQuite a while ago, I think? âŚIâve challenged myself to clear it without stopping, but now Iâve ended up coming to a halt.â
I had to stop since Iâm talking to him. Oh well, no helping it. I simply hadnât expected that Iâd receive the token from someone else.
âEh? Ah, are you possibly the pupil of the S-Rank adventurer, Mr. Sword?â
âŚ
âIâm not his pupil, but his partner. I havenât learned anything from that guy. Everything is self-taught. Leaving that aside, Iâve been told to return as the fastest, so Iâd like to head back any time now. Please give me the token.â
âOh, sorry. âŚNo doubt, youâre the fastest. Youâve arrived here first.â
He passed me a token.
âI see. Thanks.â
âBe careful on your way back!â
âOkay. Please give my regards to Mr. Dungeon Core!â I bid my farewell to the laughing, examiner-like man with a wave of my hand, and started to dash again.
On my way back I ran into one of the parties who didnât get involved with me, but I passed them by leaping above.
âEh!?â
âJust now, was that possiblyâŚ?â
âDo your best~ Youâre on the right track~â I told them in passing.
ďź
When I exited the dungeonâŚ
âHuh!? Donât tell me, you already cleared it!?â
In response I waved the token at them.
ďź
Goal!
Sword looked at me without a care whereas the examiner stared at me blankly.
âWhich reminds me, I didnât hear what to do after bringing back the token, did I?â
The examiner opened his mouth, but no sound came out of it. Sword spoke up in his stead.
âA bit late, arenât you?â
âI stopped on the way to talk with the examiner person to give me the token. Sorry.â I apologized.
So Iâve been slow after all.
âJust kiddinâ. Or rather, a time like that despite chattinâ with someone in the middle of it, eh? Didnât you run throughout almost the whole course then?â
âThatâs the kind of challenge it was. It was a bit of fun, you know? I liked it since it felt like an adventure.â
âI see, I see, thatâs great to hear.â
Yep, how irresponsible of him.
When the examiner came back to his senses at long last, he held out his hand.
ââŚIâll hold ontoâŚthe token.â
I passed it to him.
âŚâŚ
âAnd now?â
Isnât there some more?
I profusely tilted my head to the side in confusion.
ââŚPlease wait for the results of the exam.â
âWhen are you going to announce them?â
The examiner has frozen up, but I wonder why?
ââŚâŚ Once everyone finishes, all examiners will assemble, and then weâll go back to the guild. Afterwards I think youâll be told the result after around an hour.â
I see. So itâs a system where they choose from among everyone, instead of marking everyone individually.
ďź
After stretching himself, Sword carried our luggage over.
âNo choice, huh? Guess we gotta wait. The campinâ will last for a while.â
âThatâs what I actually prefer, but is it going to take that long?â
âDonât judge folks by your and my standards. Normally it takes âround two to three days, really. Moreover, you donât often encounter crazy folk whoâd break through enemies and traps at your speed. âŚAround now everyone should have entered the dungeon, I think. Letâs wait for âem at the entrance area.â
We moved over, joining up with the examiner at the dungeonâs entrance.
âOh! Youâre the one from earlier!â He pointed at me. âSo I didnât mistake you for someone else after all, huhâŚ? You seemed like you were being chased by a monster, and yet you didnât ask for help. I didnât hear that a tamer would take part in this exam, butâŚyouâre a tamer, arenât youâŚ?â
âRyoku is a golem. Ryoku, greet the examiner.â
âNice to meet you! I am Ryoku!â
âIs that also part of its basic functions?â
âOf course.â
Heâs so adorable.
âA talking golemâŚâ
âThe voice actually belongs to her, though.â Sword pointed at me.
âIâve recorded my own voice to use it for broadcasting. âŚOh, now is the perfect time. Iâd love you guys to teach Ryoku a bit. Examiner, please explain the C-Rank exam to Ryoku.â
âHuh?â
âC-RanK eXaM iS D-RaNk adVENturErS wHO aRe taKInG iT DIvE iNtO dunGeOn aND fEtCH toKEn.â
ââEeeehh!?ââ
Oh, he listened?
âThere, there, well done, Ryoku. So you heard the earlier explanation, huh?â
âMe wElL dONe?â
âYes, you did well.â
âYaaay, I got praised~â
Sword watched Ryoku jumping in joy and me caressing him with an ultra scary look.
âNothinâ to admire there. This is part of his ăEducationă. She made the golem so heâd act like that from the very start.â
When he explained this to the examiners, they praised, âIsnât that in itself really amazing then!?â
Seemingly having their interest piqued, they closely examined Ryoku all over.
âWhere did you get your hands on this? Probably in a dungeon, right?â
âI made him.â
ââHaah?ââ
âI made him.â
Silence spread.
âYou see, there was this multi-legged battle golem which appeared in a story I loved dearly. I wanted to make one for myself, at any cost. Iâve promised myself that Iâd have him sing a song with me someday when a soul dwells within.â
I repeatedly nuzzled and stroked Ryoku, causing the examiners to draw back from me.
âSorry. You gotta know, this girl got a screw loose. All the folk making magic tools are like that.â
How rude!
ďź
Five days later.
The examiners put forth a request to rescue the parties which hadnât returned yet.
âAlright, I guess weâll head out then.â
âMmh.â
âSending out an examinee on a rescue request is kind of like putting the cart before the horse, butâŚâ
âSheâs passed anyway. If you say sheâs failed, you might as well reconsider my rank.â Sword said over his shoulder before rushing into the dungeon together with me.
ďź
âThinking about it now, that was pretty much a flag, wasnât it?â
Two parties havenât come back so far. Itâs the parties who picked a fight with me. The two parties, who had absolutely nothing to do with me, and especially the party I passed on my run, managed to come back within two days.
âBecause they messed with you? Rather, thinkinâ that any kind of favoritism or rigginâ would work on adventurers is already weird as fuck. In the first place, whatâs the point in worryinâ âbout others? Us adventurers complete requests while usinâ our own abilities as capital, no? Itâs bullshit to believe that they wouldnât be able to reach C-Rank just because your beinâ favored. Adventurer ainât such a half-assed occupation that you can survive on such a naive way of thinkinâ.â
Huh? Itâs such a hard mode?
Well, heâs right in this being physical work. I highly doubt that raising your levels by leeching like in some hunting games will be of any use for something as trivial as clearing a village quest if you donât have the ability to go with it.
We arrived at the halfway point.
âNow then, I think itâd be more efficient for us to split up, but I sure canât help feelinâ worried when beinâ apart from youâŚâ
Sword looked super hesitant.
âDonât worry, itâll be no problem.â
âObviously itâll be only problems! If your agitation skill explodes, itâs highly likely for it to develop into a battle with your rescue targets!â
âIâll make them faint in such a case. Take Ryoku with you, Iâll go by myself.â
âHey, you got it backwards, donât you!?â
âRyoku and I can talk even when apart. Iâll inform you about the situation through Ryoku. Also, Ryoku and I can grasp each otherâs location. Itâs more efficient for you to take him with you.â
ââŚâŚ Gotcha. Keep me updated, minutely.â Sword gave in with a bitter expression.
âWhat are you talking about? This dungeon isnât that difficult, is it? Rather, itâs extremely boring if you clear it while looking on a map, you know? A game you know how to clear lacks any kind of appeal.â
Bang!
A fist exploded on my head.
âItâs no game, but a rescue operation.â
âI know that⌠Iâm just telling you to not worry. Everything is ăvisibleă to me.â
Sword sighed, ââŚMake sure to not have the rug pulled under you because of that conceit, âkay?â
âYouâre too much of a worrywart. Iâm just enjoying my life.â I caressed Swordâs cheek. âI worry about you too. The things I can do are limited, and so are the things you can do. And itâs my freedom what to think and how to act. Thatâs what I meant with ăI know thată. How about you?â
ââŚâŚâ
Suddenly I got hugged.
âWatch out to not get injured out of carelessness, âkay?â
âYou too. Youâre more important than the rescue targets.â
ââŚNow you suddenly come around the corner with such corny lines, eh? Are you hittinâ on me, a grown-up?â
âWhy would you interpret it like that?â
How did the topic switch from me being worried about him to me hitting on him?
With a sigh, I separated from him.
âKids donât need to worry âbout adults.â
âMy body is that of a child, but my insides are those of an adult.â
âCome to think of it, you mentioned beinâ a middle-aged man, didnât you?â
Why does he take me for a guy?
Sword headed down one of the paths while laughing.
Now then.
I let out a deep sighâŚtheyâre pretty deep in, arenât they? Three of them, huhâŚ? Unless theyâre dead, itâs the three girls party. I suppose I picked the winner here. Iâll leave the foul-mouthed middle-aged idiots to the guy around their age.
