Chapter 15: A Class Gathering for Just the Two of Us
âYou decided to listen to my complaintâŚâŚeh? Why?â
âWhy you saidâŚâ
I didnât really know why I had rushed here on a Friday of all days, breaking all the rules I had set for myself and disregarding the time that I had to spend with my family.
âAbout school, about personal things, aboutâfamily things, and so on. We would complain about those things and listen to each other. Thatâs the kind of alliance we had.â
This was originally proposed by Kazemiya. Donât tell me she already forgot.
ââŚ..â
Yet, Kazemiya remained frozen with an open-mouthed, blank expression on her face.
ââŚ.Say something.â
âSorry. I donât know what to say.â
âYou mean?â
âI didnât think youâd comeâŚ..somehow. I thought I wouldnât be able to see you todayâŚwhy? Iâm so confused that I donât even know what to sayâŚâ
It was rare to see Kazemiya in such a flustered state. I didnât think she ever showed this kind of face not only when it was cool during the daytime, but even after school at night.
ââŚas I said earlier. Itâs true that I wasnât planning to come today.â
ââŚthen why did you come?â
ââŚI donât know.â
âYou donât know, huh.â
When I answered honestly, Kazemiya let out a small giggle.
âWhatever. Iâm thinking about it too, but I donât know. Anyway, itâs complaining time, complaining. I decided today I decided Iâm going to listen to your complaining. âŚâŚOh, but let me order a free refill drink for me first.â
âYou donât have to order anything.â
âAre you a demon? Iâve been running here and Iâm thirsty.â
ââŚHmm? You came here running.â
ââŚWhy? Is it bad?â
âNo, not really. âŚIâm rather glad.â
I wonder why. I couldnât look at Kazemiyaâs face straight now.
âAnyway, let me order it first.â
âIâm telling you, itâs fine. Here.â
Kazemiya pulled out a bill and spread it out in front of me. On a blank paper, âFree refill drink Quantity: 2â was written in black letters.
ââŚI didnât expect Narumi to come, butâŚI ordered two out of habit.â
I usually headed to the family restaurant after my part-time job was over, and I asked Kazemiya to order a free refill drink for me in advance as well.
âYouâre lucky I came.â
âEven if you hadnât come, Iâd still drink that two.â
âItâs all-you-can-drink, so no matter how much you drink, itâs still enough if you just order one.â
âIf I drink twice as much as I usually do, itâs enough for two.â
Kazemiya was waving her absurd logic at me, and at this point, our eyes finally met.
My shoulders relaxed, and all the unnecessary things fell out of my mind, and I felt as if the after-school hours had returned as usual.
ââŚFufufu. Itâs a bit absurd, isnât it?â
âHaha. Yes, it is.â
We both laughed.
âThanks, Narumi, I feel a little better.â
âNo need to thank me. I didnât come here to cheer you up.â
âI see. Youâre right, Narumi just came to listen to my complaint.â
âItâs much more comfortable for you that way, isnât it?â
âYes. Itâs much more comfortable that way.â
I was allowed to take advantage of the free refill drink that Kazemiya had ordered for me and poured a melon soda with light ice in the glass until it was just about full. Right next to me, Kazemiya, who had also left her seat to fill up a new drink, was waiting for her turn.
âYou like melon soda.â
âI canât drink it at home.â
âAh, for sure. Melon soda is a common drink at family restaurants. I often see melon soda at family restaurants, but I donât see it in plastic bottles. I wonder why.â
âA strategy to increase scarcity?â
âAnd what is that?â
ââŚThe rest is God only knows. Maybe.â
âYouâre too random.â
Kazemiya gave a small smile and picked up a glass and lightly filled it with ice.
She set the clear glass filled with ice on the machine and pressed her index finger on the button I had just pressed.
âIâll have a melon soda too.â
âYou sure you donât want tea?â
âItâs a special occasion.â
We both return to our seats with melon sodas.
It was almost evening. The seats around us were gradually filling up.
There were people with their children, and students, some of them frantically tapping the keyboard attached to the cover of their tablets to compose documents or something, and others spreading out documents on the table for meetings.
Complicated sounds. Noise. The sounds of life. They were concentrating only on themselves, paying no attention to what was going on around them. I like this annoying silence. It made me feel as if we were the only people in the world, even though there was so much sound reaching my ears.
ââŚâŚsorry about yesterday.â
Kazemiyaâs voice in front of me was heard without being interrupted by the voices around me.
âMy mom, I know you must have been uncomfortable.â
âYou didnât do anything wrong, so thereâs no need for you to apologize.â
âBut sheâs my mom. If Narumi felt uncomfortable, I think I should apologize in her stead.â
ââŚâŚSo troublesome. A family that is.â
âI agree.â
She apologized on her behalf because they were family. Because she was her parent. Because she was her daughter. Because they were related to each other.
It wasnât even something Kazemiya herself did. Family indeed was a troublesome thing.
âIf anything, yesterday made me feel uncomfortable aboutââ
To be honest.
Yesterday, that night, at that place, I did feel uncomfortable.
More specifically, I felt discomfort. It was a discomfort that was hard to wipe away, and it was still stuck in my chest.
âFrom the very beginning, everything seems to be Kazemiyaâs fault, from the look in your motherâs eyes, to her face, to her words and actions. If sheâs a manager, sheâd better fix her habit of expressing whatâs in her mind on her face. Itâs pathetic.â
After letting out the discomfort, I moistened my throat with a melon soda. Mouth freshening complete.
âFufufuâŚâ
After the glass was half-full of the brightly colored green liquid, Kazemiya began to chuckle.
âAhaha. What is that? Do you usually say such things to other peopleâs mothers?â
âIf I had to apologize, I would at least do so without any heart at all.â
âGood. âŚI feel a little better now.â
âHow about Kazemiya?â
âUn. I couldnât say that much.â
âRight. Iâm surprised myself. I never thought Iâd say this much to another personâs mother.â
I never talk about other peopleâs families.
When I was with Kazemiya, I felt like I was losing myself more and more.
ââŚâŚitâs your fault, Kazemiya.â
âWhat is it suddenly? I donât know what you mean.â
âI donât know either.â
âDonât copy me.â
Laughing, Kazemiya twirled the straw in the glass, pinching it with her delicate fingers.
The dented ice block hits the glass and makes a light, refreshing sound.
âIâm not Narumiâs little sister, butâŚI got a scolding from my mom yesterday too.â
âIâd like my alliance partners to share that information with me.â
I brought up the same logic as Kazemiya sometime ago.
âItâs not very good stuff, but is that okay?â
âThen why did you bring it up?â
ââŚWell. It was something we could agree on. I thought it would not be fair to Narumi to leave it unsaid.â
âIâll listen to you just in case.â
Kazemiya put her small, soft mouth on the straw and sipped the melon soda. To me, it looked as if she was replenishing the energy needed for the words she was about to utter.
âShe saidâŚÂ âIf you let him play with you, that Narumi kid will rapidly decline. Stop dragging others down.ââ
âHeh. Rapidly decline, huhâŚso? What part of that is âagreeable contentâ?â
âMhm. WellâŚAll of it? Even today, NARUMI was supposed to spend time with his family. And yet Iâm taking that time away for myself.â
âI made the choice. Besides, even if what your mother said were true, it wouldnât get through to me.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I amââ
To Kazemiya, who nodded her head, I said confidently,
âIâve fallen far enough before I became friends with you.â
ââŚEh?â
âI ran away from home, ran away from my family. I ran away, ran away, ran away, and then I came into this store. See? Iâve fallen far enough, havenât I?â
I said it with pride. With confidence.
ââŚâŚReally, NARUMI is interesting.â
âCan I take that as a compliment?â
âI donât know. I think youâre an idiot.â
âMaybe thatâs why Iâm here.â
âMaybe. ButâŚâ
The light had returned to KAZEMIYAâs eyes.
Not as empty as this morning. Not as empty as this morning. I knowâŚâŚno. The Kazemiya Kohaku I had known for the past five days was back.
âI donât dislike that kind of stupidity.â
ââŚIâll take that as a compliment.â
At best I could only say something like that and look away.
I didnât know what I was doing. But right nowâŚâŚonly now, I couldnât look directly at Kazemiyaâs face.
âYou know, today was the day of the class gathering party.â
âDid you want to go?â
âNo way. âŚI donât want to. Letâs have a class reunion now, too.â
âEven though thereâs only two of us?â
âEven if itâs just the two of us, a class reunion is still a class reunion, right? BesidesâŚâŚâ
ââItâll be an excuse for my family.ââ
Our words matched word for word, without coordinating our timing.
âEspecially for Narumi.â
âI appreciate your concern.â
ââŚSame here, thank you.â
Saying so, Kazemiya held up a small glass of melon soda, the remaining portion of which was running low.
âDo you want to do something like that?â
âLetâs do it.â
I also raised my glass and lightly touched it to Kazemiyaâs glass.
