Hey everyone! Yep you saw right, this lazy af translator is picking up a NEW series despite the already nonexistent releases. Doesn’t help that each chapter for this series is REAL long either.
I’ve been eyeing this series for quite a while since I loved the author’s other works and thought it’d be nice to finish this one as well.

“……What is this?”

After giving the paper in her hands a glance, a young girl asked the question that came to mind.

“Didn’t you say that you wanted to read a story that you’ve never read before? That’s why I made this. Aren’t you happy?”\n
“Did mother draw this?”[1]
“Correct. Quite impressive for an amateur don’t you think? I did my best to write it.”

She let out a loud hmph as she proudly puffed. The young girl’s eyes once again settled on the thin piece of paper.
On there depicted the scene of a female swordsman carrying a ferocious expression, subjugating a monster thought to be the Demon king. The art could be considered a surprising achievement, but the story came to a conclusion in just six panels.
The girl had indeed stated that she had wished to read a unique story, but this could not even be considered a story. Even a child like her could draw up something like this in three minutes. A common biography of how the hero defeated the demon king. All that could be taken away from this paper was that the girl became a hero and beat the demon king and the demons. Only that.

“Tell me, how is this a unique story that I have never seen before? Well, you’ve achieved your goal of making a fool of me.”
“It’s because this story is the only one there is. It’s my favourite and most hated story. I wonder if I have managed to convey its intricate conflicts.”
“Not at all. Why don’t you try fattening it up to two books? Only took me three seconds to finish reading it.”
“I boldly scrapped all the useless parts. It’s a waste of paper. Economical isn’t it?”

The woman poked at the young girl’s forehead with her outstretched fingers. Her face held a mischievous smile which seemed to say ‘I did it.’
Thinking that she was being teased as per usual, the girl scrunched up the paper into a ball and threw it against the floor. Her foster mother’s masterpiece was all crumpled up but no sense of guilt welled up.
She felt that she saw a slight distortion on the female swordsman’s ferocious expression but passed it off as a trick of the eyes. After all, her eyes were bad and so was her mother’s brain.

“Thank you for going out of your way to make this for me. I have certainly received your feelings.”
“As long as you understand. I’ll write it if I feel like it. Then, I’m quite busy so I’ll be going. You should sometimes go outside rather than spending all your time studying.”
“Yes yes.”
“And, open the curtains. If your eyes worsen any more―”
“Stop nagging, just leave already!”\n
“Well then, good luck on your studies, Katarina-“chan”.”

Leaving behind those words, the woman left the room humming.
The girl who was called Katarina-“chan” threw the scrunched up paper ball by reflex but her target had already closed the door.
She took in a deep breath and calmed her mind. It greatly annoyed her to do as she was told, but she still opened the curtains, allowing the sunlight to seep into the room. The dazzling sunlight was truly unpleasant. Her eyes hurt.
After glaring at the wrinkled paper ball for a while, she eventually picked it up.
She adjusted the position of her glasses and heaved out a sigh before violently stuffing the paper ball into a drawer in her desk.

“Hey, what are you doing!”

With her hard work not only scrunched up but also thrown back at her face, the girl yelled back, her face flushed red.
Although, this so called hard work was scrap she wrote up in three minutes while humming to herself.

“My apologies. It was a slight accident. If your business is done, may I ask you to please leave.”
“Nothing is done at all! I submitted a “written application” so hurry up and hand over the permit―”

Cutting off the girl’s indignation with one hand, the lady at the reception flatly replied.

“This window only attends to people who have already received an occupation certification from the guild. We don’t welcome snotty brats from the countryside like you. You look like you’d die within three minutes of entering the labyrinth so just wipe your tears and go home. Shoo shoo.”

Her hand was flapping back and forth as though she was chasing away a fly of sorts as she laughed scornfully.
The girl’s face had become as red like a ripened tomato from the ridicule.

“Y- you damn woman!”
“Even so, there are still plenty of idiots who don’t get it after we tell them so we are constantly introducing people to guilds. It’s the window “next over”. We introduce a suitable location after considering the person’s history and compatibility. You better be thankful to the Star God for their compassionate heart.”

When the girl looked over to the window beside, she saw a long queue. Men who seemed to be farmers, men whose muscles were on full display and such. There was truly a variety of people, from couples flirting with one another to earnest-looking monks. All of them were lined up to have an introduction letter written for them.
The girl had found lining up too much of a hassle and hence made a beeline for this empty window. She hadn’t thought too deeply.

“Either way, aren’t you free? Just write up a letter of introduction in a jiffy.”
“Let’s see. It would be nice if you begged me. Lower your head and say some words that will make me want to help you write one. Then I might consider it.”

The girl cursed out in her heart, ‘This damn hag’. Although she didn’t look old enough to be called a hag, her personality was absolute crap. The girl was about to throw the rolled up application form at her, but she had to endure. It would be bad if she couldn’t enter the labyrinth.
――For she did not have any money.

“……P- please.”
“I couldn’t hear any of it.”
“C- could you, p- please. Th- the, the guild introduction letter, p- please, write, it.”
“Hm, it can’t be helped. I suppose I’ll have to write it if you come begging with such an amusing face. I feel like I will be able to enjoy your amusing face for the whole of today so I’ll write it to kill some time. Here, hurry up and give me that trashy application form.”

Calming herself down as she repeatedly chanted ‘bear with it’ to herself, she held back the urge to peg it across, and smoothed out the rolled up paper as she handed it over.

“Let’s see. Your personal history. “<b>I was the hero. I killed the demon king and returned the world to peace”</b> is it, how amazing. And, you don’t know your name due to amnesia, yep yep. But since having no name would be inconvenient, just Hero should be fine. Must be tragic to have amnesia. You have my utmost sympathies, on how your brain functions.”
“……Why thank you.”
“There’s no need for thanks, it was sarcasm. Then I shall provide the introduction letter to the Warrior’s Guild for the delusional self-proclaimed Hero-san. It’s not like you would be able to use magic. They have people ranging from competent to rubbish there after all. Well, most of them are rubbish though……Here, it’s done.”

Placing the letter she half-heartedly wrote into an envelope, she once again threw it at the girl’s ― Hero’s face. She then made another gesture signalling for her to hurry up and leave.

“B- bastard, I’ll remember this!”

Hero tried spitting out some overused villain lines. Her heart felt like it was clouded, similar to a loser’s. She came to a realisation: ‘I see, so this is what all the scum I’ve defeated thus far felt like’.

“Right, next please.”

Before she knew it, there was a man lined up behind her, waiting with an application. The man pushed past Hero with a look of irritation.

“Finally. You’re in the way, move it!”
“O- ow!”

Blood rushed to her head as she cussed internally, but she held back her anger due to her empty stomach. If she wasted any more strength or willpower, she might just faint on the spot.
As she exhaled hopelessly, Hero left the what’s-it-called church building.
Taking this chance, she grabbed a leaflet placed at the entrance. Gathering information was very important.
She skimmed through it using her inoperative head, but she couldn’t understand it.

“……What’s this, ugh, it’s needlessly long and detailed.”

She grudgingly passed her eyes through the leaflet, where tiny words were tightly squished together. Hero strongly thought that it would do well if they increased the amount of pictures and colours on there. It was extremely hard to read.
Holding back her urge to shred it to pieces as she read, she obtained a basic understanding of the details.

――Summarising the details of the leaflet.
・In order receive permission from the what’s-it-called church, one has to belong to one of the many <b>“Guilds”</b> in this town of Art.
・There exists various guilds such as the Warrior’s or the Magician’s. As a principle, one cannot freely choose. If there is a chance, one must report to the church.
・One will receive an<b> “occupation certification”</b>[2] if the guilds listed above have acknowledged your strength of being beyond a certain degree.
・Only after obtaining an <b>“occupation certification”</b> can one receive an <b>“exploration permit”</b> from the something-called association, whereby they can then freely explore the underground labyrinth.
ポPredetermined body parts of the hunted demons can be brought back and exchanged for money
・Those in search of a lodging should head to <b>“</b><b>Paradise Pavilion</b><b>”</b>[3]. Delicious meals and wonderful drinks of your choice are awaiting you. If you stay with us, you are bound to make progress with the hellish labyrinth exploration!

――That is all.

“That last one was completely an advertisement. And, Paradise Pavilion they say. The name makes me feel like I’ll be taking my last breath or something.”

While she found that name familiar, she put the leaflet into her pocket.
For now, she would store the information into her head and head to her destination. There was a map on the leaflet so Hero knew the general direction of where she would be headed. She used the somewhat sturdy stick she picked up before she entered the town as a replacement for a cane.
The appearance of Hero right now was not something one could associate with a <b>“hero”</b>. She was equipped with thin casual clothing and a stick which could be found anywhere. A run of the mill farmer would probably be better armed than her ― at least they had some iron farm tools.
To top it off, she had no money. With no money, she could not even buy food. In order to earn money, nothing other than fighting came to mind. That said, she would be the same as a demon if she attacked a human. That’s where entering the labyrinth came into play. She would kill the demons and earn money, which meant she could fill her stomach. As a bonus, the world would also be at peace. There were only pluses, so there was no problem.
As Hero’s killing intent towards the demons rose, a voice called out from somewhere.

“Er, um.”\n
“Ahh, I’m tired. So annoying. Even breathing is tiring.”
“E- excuse me.”

A tall and youthful female’s voice called out from beside her. Hero walked on, paying it no heed.

“I think I’m starting to mishear things now. Maybe my time has come. If I’m going to die, I would prefer Paradise Pavilion. Spare me from going to hell. It’s depressing enough just thinking about how I’ll have to continue killing all the demons in hell after I die.”

Ignoring the mumbling voice of the girl next to her, Hero pushed forwards. One can only push forwards when in times of trouble. That’s what she’s done up until now.
As she renewed her determination that that is what she will do from here on out, her way forwards was unfortunately blocked off.

“Excuse me! Um, if it’s fine with you, could you go to the guild with me?”
“Why? Rather, who are you?”

Hero looked over the young lady as though she was appraising an item. Even if she looked like a good person, in reality… it was quite common to come across the unexpected. That’s why it is correct to tackle someone with doubts.

“Um, because I saw you at the church just then. And, I’m also going to the guild to hand in my affiliation request, so I thought if you could. I’m a bit uneasy by myself. Ah, my introduction letter is for the<b> “Warrior”</b> Guild as well.”

The young lady spoke her suggestion with a good-natured smile. She did not seem to have any ulterior motives. This girl was a person who was exactly as they seemed. Hero could roughly tell people apart from the smell they gave off. Those who starved for blood, rotten to the core, would reek no matter how much they tried to hide it, and to an unbearable degree at that. Enough to make her want to unconsciously crush their brains, the source of the stench.

“……Why did you think that I would be headed to the Warrior’s Guild? Was it because you thought I was simple and that my brain is made from muscles? You’re right, I’m a muscle-head woman. My hands move before I think after all.”
“N- none of the sorts. It was because I heard Warrior’s Guild being mentioned just then. And the Warrior’s Guild right now is gaining momentum! Everyone is saying that it’s only a matter of time before they surpass the Swordsmen Guild!”
“No, as I said, I am the hero―”
“Yes yes, I know. The <b>“hero”</b> is someone everyone admires after all. It is important to possess those feelings and high goals and continue endeavouring with your training. You understand that very well! Spectacular!”

The tall young lady’s fists clenched even further as she passionately explained.
Hero instantly understood, <b>“Ah, this girl is the tiring type”</b>. These type of people tend to sap not only a lot of stamina physically, but also emotionally. Not of their own, but the main person they’re involved with.
Hero took another glance at her figure. She was taller than Hero by a head, making her around the same height of grown men. Her heavy silver armour was sturdily built, an emblem thought to be a family crest was carved into her shield and a long sword hung from her waist. She could be called the ideal warrior.
Her blond hair was tied in a ponytail. Strongly burning ideals could be seen from her eyes sparkling with brilliance.

“……I guess it’s fine. It’ll save me the trouble if you could lead the way. This town is so big that I still don’t know my way around. Really makes one think about just large it is.”

This metropolis surrounded by a high rampart was an open field situated between rivers. When Hero first came to this town, she had held some truly trivial thoughts such as ‘must be a lot of trouble if a flood occurs’. She was able to make out that products came and went, people hustled in the traffic and its noise was proportional to its prosperity, almost to a fault.

“But of course! This town known as Art was built up around the <b>“Underground Labyrinth”</b> you see.  It is also the final line of defence against the demons invading from underground. If you head to the labyrinth, you’ll be able to safely view the barrier ― But well, I suppose there’s no need to explain it this point in.”

After giving an explanation, she laughed it off with an embarrassed grin on her face. Though, for someone like Hero who wasn’t clear on the particulars of this place, this was an extremely intriguing story.
What is waiting at the end of the <b>“Underground Labyrinth”</b>? Why does she have to head to the main cause in order to hunt them? If they knew the source, there should be countless ways to deal with it. And why do they not blockade off the labyrinth?
As Hero pondered, her stomach let out a grand growl. Looks like she no longer has the strength to continue thinking.

“Ah, should we go get some food before we head to the guild?”
“……I don’t, have any money.”
“I have a little so let’s go eat together!”

She had a dazzling smile on as she asked. She was just like a merciful goddess.

“……You, are such a good person.”
“It’s as thanks for coming with me! Ah, I forgot! I am called Matari Art [4]. Nice to meet you.”

She neatly bowed her head this way. As she did, her tied up hair shook exactly like a horse’s tail would.

“……Art? Sounds somewhat familiar.”

Remembering that the name of the town was also Art, Hero reflexively asks back.

“Ah, yes. I am also more or less a member of the Art family. Only, I’m not officially acknowledged as one. Even so, the name of Art is already something like a decoration… They’re simply clinging onto their past glory.”

Matari’s expression clouded over. Her attitude made a complete change from just before, a shadow cast on her back. Although Hero had absolutely no idea on what the Art family was, she decided to give some words of encouragement. It was compensation for being treated to a meal.

“Hmm. You’ve got it rough as well. Here, cheer up. If you continue to sulk like that, your luck will also drop. Then nothing good will happen and good things won’t come your way either.”

Exactly, just like picking up some cursed equipment or picking up some mouldy bread — that was something very terrifying. Since the equipment Hero had used up until now were all plundered from the demons, she had experienced her own fair share of problems. There was a sword that numbed the hand when grabbed or a helmet that indefinitely tightened when worn. Even leaving aside those exceptions, one could never underestimate demons as their weapons and armour were sturdier and more exceptional than those crafted by humans.
To show her gratitude, Hero had killed the demons using their own prided weapons.

“S- sorry. You’re right. I was whining for a bit there. I’ll cheer up so let’s go!”

She made a small laugh and stuck out her tongue [5]. It was a cute gesture. Hero vaguely thought that it wouldn’t suit someone like herself who was dripping with blood.

“Then could I trouble you to lead the way? I’ll be following on behind you.”
“Of course! Let’s go. This will be our first step to glory!”

Matari’s spirit seemed to return to normal. In exchange, Hero’s back hunched over. Her last bit of energy was drained from her in order to go along with the energetic girl. Making sure not to fall, she leaned on the stick as support and strained her legs.

“Come to think of it, I forgot something very important. May I ask for your name?”

Matari clapped her hands together and brought her face closer.
Hero inwardly debated: should she give a random pseudonym? But she immediately put an end to that thought.
――She does not need a name, for she is the hero. Before she is a human, she is a hero. Someone who solely exists to kill demons. A human like that has no need for a name. No one was there to call out her name.

“It’s Hero. My name is Hero. I forgot the past due to amnesia. So just call me whatever you wish.”
“Am- amnesia is it. B- but without a name…”

Matari raised a hesitant voice upon hearing Hero’s words. Hero lightly tapped Matari’s shoulders and walked off.

“I’ll remember it eventually. So I don’t really care. Here, quickly. Let’s go.”
“W- wait up! H- hero-san? A- are you really okay with that being your name? Why don’t you go with something cuter―”
“The person in question is saying anything’s fine so why not leave it there? We’ll just have to wait until my memories come back. In the first place, names don’t matter as long as you can distinguish between who <b>“that”</b> is.”
“I- is that how it works? I mean, it’s your name.”

Hero informed Matari who seemed unconvinced in an incredibly cold tone.
That gaze was so terribly cold that Matari could not speak her next words.

“―That’s how the world is.”

◆

Lead by Matari, Hero was brought to a building that was seemingly modified into a tavern.
On the signboard, which had a bottle of wine drawn on, were many stickers which read <b>“Come, ye warriors!”</b>. Hero thought that other than drunken old men, no one else would come, but decided to keep quiet.
She could hear the tumult and clashes of swords from outside. It seemed to be prospering in its own way. Even if she didn’t know what place the guild was like, it would appear that it didn’t only serve for drinking.
Matari took the initiative and entered first, whereas Hero followed after, chewing on her bread. She was heavily armed with bread in her right hand and a wooden stick in her left.
Among the crowd were the expected drunkards and people who looked as evil as the bandits who swarmed the area. This was a place in which women and children stood out like a sore thumb. Matari pushed through the crowd without faltering, to the counter where a man in a blue shirt stood on the other side, and began a conversation.
The blue shirt man was in his primes and possessed a muscular body. The scar which ran across his cheek was awfully eye catching. If he were introduced as the leader of a group of bandits, she would not doubt it at all.

“Ah, Hero-san? This person here is called Rob, he’s the master of the Warrior’s Guild. Your introduction letter―”
“Hmph, there no need to even look at it. We haven’t fallen so low to have to let a snotty brat like her join. Even if this is a garbage dump.”

Cutting off Matari’s words, Rob glared at Hero and spat out disgustingly.
Hero bit into her bread in irritation at that. She silently threw over her letter of introduction which Rob violently grabbed.

“I’ll do it for you since it’s an introduction letter from the church. If you’re done, then hurry up and leave. What’s this, name is self-proclaimed hero, previously was the hero for a bit, self-proclaimed specialty is demon extermination, things to note from the church: <b>“garbage belongs in the garbage bin”</b> it says. That church bitch, fuckin’ messing with me.”

After exaggeratedly reading the contents out loud, Rob tossed the letter into the bin and told Hero just one word. All as he pointed to the exit.

“―Leave.”
“No. I won’t get any money unless I kill the demons. It’s a waste of both our times so just fork over that exploration permit. I’ll go kill more than you can count.”
“You’re underestimating life aren’t you.”
“I’ve always lived optimistically. I’ve never given up no matter what happened. That’s why I’m alive. I have not once underestimated life.”
“Then let me ask, what’s with your getup? Someone who is about to challenge the underground labyrinth came with just everyday clothing and one wooden stick picked up from who knows where. This ain’t a dance class you know. Why don’t you go dress up a bit more before coming back?”

Hero’s gaze swept over the room to see almost everyone in the guild directing looks of curiosity her way. Its unpleasantness was off the charts, but Hero chose to endure, telling herself that she must be patient.
If she wasn’t, she wouldn’t be able to enter the labyrinth. Although, between killing demons or earning money, she didn’t know which one was her aim.
Still, Hero was fed up. She knew that this building was reconstructed to be a tavern, but the inside was exactly like a tavern.
Despite this being a gathering place of warriors challenging the labyrinth, they were providing alcohol of sorts. Hero strongly thought that they should change their name from Warrior’s Guild to Drunkster’s Guild.
Having said that, there was indeed a variety of people here, some of them potentially being quite capable. They probably weren’t just bluffs. This blue shirt should be a top-notch big wheel too. How would she get them to acknowledge her as soon as possible? Should she just go in and give them a good punch?
The men who were previously directing curious gazes let out jeers at Hero who was stuck in a whirlpool of her own thoughts.

“Hey lil’ self-proclaimed hero. You must have yer own circumstances, but this ain’t a playground. If you wanna earn some money, you should go to somewhere that suits yer body.”
“Well, you won’t be going anywhere with that seedy body though!”
“Hahaha! No no, you never know if there is a fellow with those strange hobbies! There might be someone out there who prefers it small!”
“Hahaha, is there really? Good for you then young lady! You can get all popular with those perverts! Be sure to do your best as you aim for the number one prostitute in Art!!”

Fanned on by the alcohol, the men burst into wild laughter.
――These men were considered rather high in terms on seniority and would run their mouths off, saying practically the same things every time in order to test the guts of the newbies. Today, they were particularly enthusiastic with their taunts. They had felt like they were being made fun of after having an ignorant brat being shoved on them by the church. ――Although, mixed in their mocking words was the slight kindness of wishing to prevent another young corpse from being added to the list.
Matari’s face flushed red. She had yet to develop a resistance to such vulgar words. The blue shirted Rob repeated the same words from before without a single change in expression.

“―That’s how it is. If you get the reality of things then hurry up and get out. I don’t have that much time to spare. Matari, you still have your paperwork so you can stay.”
“R- Rob-san!”
“I’m not running this guild for fun either. I can’t afford to send a fellow into the labyrinth who I know will be dying. You understand that much right?”
“……Y- yes, but.”

Rob barked at Matari who pressed for him to reconsider.

“No buts. If you’re a member of the Art family, then you should understand. Plus, if you’re going to choose a partner, at least pick someone more worthy.”
“S- sorry.”

The tall back of Matari whose argument was completely overwhelmed curled up. She then faced Hero and sorrowfully bowed her head.
Hero who was treated as unworthy, and promoted to most-likely-to-become-a-corpse candidate, mulled over what to do.
(……Why’s this so annoying, should I just raid the labyrinth myself? I’m getting hungrier by the second as well. In the first place, I don’t need permission to butcher  demons.)
Just as Hero’s thoughts were headed towards a dangerous direction, a veteran man approached her as though to fan the flames.

“Hey there missy, don’t just stand there, hurry up and leave. If you’re fine with me, I could take you on later you know?”
“Hahaha, so you had those sorts of interests!”\n
“Wahahaha! You perverted old man!”
“It’s nothing, I thought I’d become her first customer. Since I won’t get charged you know?”

The man had a filthy smile slapped on his face as he placed a hand on the petite Hero.
In that instant he was about to grope her body with his perverted hand motions…
Hero drove a fist straight into the man’s stomach. He was clad in a sturdy set of metal armour which had not served to kill the momentum.
It was a blow from her left nondominant hand. A croak slipped out from his mouth as he kneeled over from this heavy hit.
To add on, Hero knocked the man’s chin up with her stick, then landed another hit in as she swung down.
Despite the magnificent combination of strikes, Hero was still holding back. If he was a demon, he would no doubt have already have been pulverised into dust.

“How does the stick taste? The weapon isn’t important as long as it can kill. Defensive gear doesn’t matter. It’s either kill or be killed. That’s all that matters. So, you who who are wearing a set of sturdy armour is on the verge of being killed by me who only has one measly stick. You understand don’t you?”

Holding the wooden stick with both hands, she pushed it against the man’s back, where the spine was. If Hero exerted any more pressure, the man would die.

“Gueh, w- wait, please wait.”
“Thinking carefully, wouldn’t there be an empty seat if you die? Then I could take your spot. Hey, what do you think? Don’t you think it’s a good idea? Right? I think so. Yep. It pains my heart to have to kill a human, but it’s all for killing demons so there’s nothing I can do.”

Hero mumbled to herself like a broken record, then let out a cackling laughter after coming to a conclusion.

“A- an- anyone! S- save me!!”

The man pleaded for help from his surroundings, but no one moved. They could not move. Their bodies would not move from the overwhelming pressure released by the petite girl. The defenseless girl was laughing maniacally, but they could not move.
They understood. They would bleed if a blade touched them. That was glaringly obvious. If they tried to stop this girl, they would surely be killed. Their brain was screaming out that next one kneeling on the ground would be them. That’s why they could not move.

“Done with your farewells? Don’t worry. I’ll save you. I’ll kill enough demons to make up for you. The world will become peaceful, and it will surely be saved. Isn’t that wonderful? The day the hero defeats the demon king is close. That’s why you can rest assured and sacrifice yourself. Peace is built on many noble sacrifices. Someone important said so after all. That’s why there’s no need to worry. Then goodbye.”

After flatly running her mouth, Hero swore to achieve world peace. Just she placed a foot on the man’s spine, about to crush it into pieces―

“―Leave it at that! I apologise for what happened earlier. I hope you can forgive our rudeness. I’ll accept you into our Warrior’s Guild. So, please let go of that guy.”

Clapping his hands together loud enough for it to reverberate around the room, Rob faced Hero and apologised. Along with this sound, the glint of madness in Hero’s eyes disappeared. She gave a glance to the man she was stepping on before moving her foot off, having lost all interest.
Her goal was to kill demons. She had to go to the labyrinth in order to do that. For that, she would join a guild. If she could achieve that, there was no particular reason to kill this man. Therefore she released him. That was all.
The man trembled in trepidation as he let out desperate coughs. The people from the surrounding jumped to action, raising voices of help.

“A- are you okay, Java!?”
“H- hey, his breathing is getting bad.”
“Have him get treatment from the Clergymen Guild! His partner should be there. Hurry!”

Veterans flew out of the Warrior’s Guild carrying the man known as Java who was in critical condition. Hero, on the other hand, sent them off with half-hearted feelings.

“H- Hero-san, t- that, w- was a bit overboard.”

A pale faced Matari approached Hero and spoke up. She, too, was one of the people who could not take action from the pressure. She had frozen up, unable to move.

“You didn’t really intend to kill him right? You’d become a murderer if you killed someone after all. Right?”
“…………”

Hero decided to brush the unconvinced Matari off with some random nonsense. She didn’t seem like someone who would be satisfied just because it was to kill demons, hence she had to make up something else.

“To humans, the most important thing is pride. Even if they starve or murder, as long as they haven’t lost that, they are still a splendid human. A human who has lost that―”
“A human who has lost that?”
“Becomes a pitiful beast. They will learn the taste of blood, drown in it, and fall from the realm of humans. Those are demons. That’s why I have to fight if my pride is damaged. I have done exactly that. In order to not become a demon. Remember it, if you wish to remain human that is.”

Or so Hero arrogantly spoke as she bit down on the food left on top of the table. There was no problem with snitching food as long as she didn’t lose her pride. That’s how it was.

“Y- yes.”

Matari gave a grand nod, swearing to carve those words to heart and repeated the word ‘pride’ over and over to herself. This seemed to have made a strong impression on her.
Rob let out a sigh and called out after he debated on what to do.

“What a wonderful outlook. You speak as though you are a war-bloodied soldier. Who on earth are you?”
“Hero.”\n
“I see, I see. Anyways, welcome to our Warrior’s Guild. I more or less welcome you. Your name is―”
“Hero.”
“… Young lady Hero. I’ll be writing that onto the register then. I’ll probably be forgetting the name of a newbie either way. Do your best to make yourself useful to the church.”\n
“Yes yes.”

Hero carelessly responded as she chomped down on some meat.

“―Very well. Originally, there’s a lot of steps to the procedures, but with how it is today, could I ask you two to come back tomorrow? This is for all the trouble. You can think of it as an item to show our welcome.”

Rob handed Hero one silver coin. It had enough value for one to stay at an inn, eat a feast and party on alcohol and still have some change left over.
The money was from Rob’s own wallet. It included an apology fee for her initial treatment as rubbish as well.

“Why thank you.”
“There are a lot of inns, but I recommend Paradise Pavilion. Many of your peers are staying there you see. And most importantly, they specially deal with us Warrior’s Guild. It just means that if you ladies stay there, a small amount of happiness will be coming my way.”

Hero and co were chased out of the Guild as though emphasising ‘if you get it, then go back for today’. Hero called out to Matari who was chased out along with her as an unfortunate victim.

“Sorry. I dragged you into that.”
“N- no, it’s fine! More importantly, the way you handled the pole just then was truly magnificent. Your body’s movement had an edge to it as well. Are you aiming to be an martial artist in the future?”

Clasping her hands together, she looked towards Hero with eyes of excitement.
Hero who wasn’t used to those types of gazes replied only after cutting off their eye contact.

“N- no. I’m the hero. I won’t become a martial artist. Since I am the hero. It would be strange if the hero was a martial artist.”
“Is that so? I feel like you have overflowing potential though. Anyways, let’s go to Paradise Pavilion!”

Hero muttered to herself ‘so in the end it’s still Paradise Pavilion’. If only they could change their name, for example: Cozy Pavilion. That would sound like they could be at peace while they were sleeping.
While Hero was musing so inwardly, Matari had gotten ahead by quite some distance.

“Hero-san, you’re going to be left behind!”
“My my. Where are things headed. Well, I guess it’ll go wherever it goes.”

Things have worked out thus far. That’s why, they will from here on out as well.
Hero cut off her thoughts here and ran off towards Matari who was energetically waving her hands as her ponytail swung about.
