Chapter 1, Undying
When he sat up from the ground, Wen Jin touched his own chest in shock, his face covered in cold sweat. He had just been penetrated by a sharp claw right there, and he could almost recall the feeling of it breaking through his skin. He could hear the slight tear as his skin was broken through, and also the coldness of the claw between the searing pain.
His heart had been pierced through, Wen Jin thought.
There was no way anyone could survive such an injuryā€¦So why was heā€¦What the hell is going on?
Wen Jin is a third-year student at A Cityā€™s XX University. Right now, he was currently preparing a topic for his graduation thesis. During that, he thought about coming out for some air, so he found this remote area that could be described as the suburbs. But in the end, a red rain suddenly poured down from the sky just earlier that day. At first, it was just a drizzle, but the strange color of it still brought Wen Jin to look for cover. He just so happened to find a cave right hereā€¦But fortunately, there were some karst landforms around the area that were deep enough to form caves, otherwise, he would have to rely on the hopes that the trees in the nearby forest would be leafy enough to shield him from the rain.
While Wen Jin did find a place to cover himself from the rain, he still ended up getting a little wet before then. In addition to the moisture floating in the air amongst other things, some changes begin to form inside of him.
Just as he arrived at the cave, Wen Jin felt his sight blurring and his body began to burn as if his temperature had just shot up rapidly. His view darkened before him and he fell over just like that, falling unconscious.
By the time Wen Jin woke up again, the rain had already stopped. He had no idea how long it had been raining for, but the forest was covered in a sour and striking smell. It wasnā€™t quite like an acid rain, but insteadā€¦the rain smelled like something rotten had been soaking inside of it before it came down.
After making sure that he was fine, Wen Jin sorted out his stuff. He planned to leave the forest and head back to school. That rain was incredibly strange and he didnā€™t want to stay alone in an unfamiliar place. Even if the university was just the place he was temporarily staying in after leaving his hometown, it still made him feel more secure than this place did.
Wen Jin felt a little flustered. The silence all around him was unsettling, and it gave him a bad feeling. So, in the end, when he brushed away the shrubbery and was just about to pass through, the scene before him shocked him still.
He saw something yellow, and it was as tall as a person, around two or three meters longā€¦It was a tiger!
What should he do? What should he do to prevent this tiger pouncing over and mauling him? Would it work if he laid down and pretended to be dead? But this is a tiger, not a bear. Even if he did try and run, he definitely couldnā€™t outrun four legs with just two!
Fine, forget it, just wait and die I guess, but wait what the fuck I havenā€™t even graduated from university! No, I canā€™t die, I canā€™tā€¦Iā€™m gonna die Iā€™m gonna die Iā€™m gonna die, please spare my life, great hero!
Wen Jinā€™s entire body was stiff as he stared at the tiger. Those golden eyes that stared right at him were coming closer, and closerā€¦
Wen Jin fell over.
ā€¦
Wen Jin touched his own neck. He remembered he had just had his neck snapped by a tiger back thenā€¦WTF!!!
After wiping the corners of his mouth and lifting his head back onto his neck so it wasnā€™t hanging down his neck on a piece of his skin, Wen jin finally understoodā€¦He wasnā€™t completely fine. At the very least, the part the tiger had snapped off wasnā€™t fine at allā€¦Only his skin recovered.
This situation was not right at all. Maybeā€¦something strange changed inside of him. Wen Jin felt anxious. He didnā€™t know what he should do, but what was certain was the fact that he must never tell this to anyone.
Even if he had never mingled in society, he still read enough novels. Itā€™s always mentioned in those dystopian novels. To carry a precious gem is to carry a sin on your shoulders. Even if you were carrying a pile of shit instead of a precious stone, someone out there would still want to dig out the shit youā€™re hiding just to have a look.
Alsoā€¦
Wen Jin narrowed his eyes. Recalling the look of the tiger that had just bitten himā€¦No matter how big a tiger was, it wouldnā€™t grow to such a massive size. He was 178 cm tall but he could still be described as cute and petite when he faced that tiger. Thatā€™s way too shocking! Somethingā€™s definitely wrong with that tiger! Thinking back to that rain he encountered before his own mutation, Wen Jin felt like he had found the answer.
And soā€¦
He had to get out of here as soon as possible.
This area was quite close to the forest park. Even though he had no idea how a tiger could run out so quickly, the cages in the zoo definitely wonā€™t be able to contain those mutated animals anyway. That tiger was just the beginningā€¦But Wen Jin wasnā€™t sure if he could run out of here successfully. Whatā€™s more, those mutated animals were nearby. There was even that tiger that mauled him earlier still in the forest. If it turns around and finds him, it might drag him back if it finds him good enough for another mealā€¦
No no no, heā€™s definitely overthinking it.
Wen Jin shook his head and began to walk forward.
Compared to those mutated animals, he felt like he was a weaksauce. As for the mutating bit, he didnā€™t expect to awaken some special ability like the protagonists, side characters, or even passersby and whatnot in those novels, but at the very least, couldnā€™t he have gotten stronger like those animals? How did he end up still slow as a chickenā€¦Feels bad man.
But he quickly shook those stupid ideas out of his mind and focused on finding his way. Thanks to that tiger from earlier, he had completely forgotten where he was at, nor which direction he came from. If he wanted to find a way out of this unfamiliar forest right nowā€¦that would really prove a difficult task.
And truly, accidents keep cropping up at every corner. Just as he brushed away the shrubbery for the second time, his eyes met with those sharp golden eyes again.
Wen Jin, ā€œā€¦ā€
Tiger, ā€œā€¦Roar!ā€
ā€œHoly shit!!!ā€ Wen Jin turned around and ran without hesitation. Even if he couldnā€™t outrun four legs with his two, a man can still dream, right? But a dream is just a dream after all. The instant Wen Jin turned around, he was pounced at and thrown to the grass.
However, the tiger didnā€™t seem quite hungry at the moment. It kept sniffing at his neck, making a grunting noise, seemingly puzzled about how the food it just killed multiplied itselfā€¦As if!
Wen Jin flipped a table in his heart but he didnā€™t move a single finger in real life. He was thinkingā€¦Since he wouldnā€™t die anywayā€¦Shit, itā€™s no good even if he canā€™t die! God knows whether this tiger would gnaw on his arms or legs like jerky! If it starts thinking that any part of him was fair game as long as it could snap his head offā€¦Would he still be able to live if his head fell off?
Fine, time to stop playing around.
Wen Jin shut his eyes and waited for the pain to arrive. Even if he couldnā€™t die that didnā€™t mean he wouldnā€™t be afraid. Who on earth wouldnā€™t feel scared if they knew they were going to be mauled by a tiger? And he didnā€™t even know where it was going to hurt yet! At the very least, Wen Jin felt that he was doing very well already, not having peed his pants and allā€¦So the tiger wouldnā€™t taste anything weird when it bit into himā€¦
But in the end, even after waiting for a long timeā€¦The tiger never ate him.
Wen Jin waited and waited, but just as he was about to get up and run away, he suddenly felt something hot at his neck. A soft and hot thing touched the back of his neck, causing a bit of a sting, giving Wen Jin the urge to throw a slap over no matter how dangerous the being behind him was. But perhaps that might not be so bad of an idea after all? Does this bastard know that his tongue is full of spikes?! Just one lick itself is fucking terrible alright?!
Alright, fine. Wen Jin didnā€™t have the guts to give the tiger a slap, nor did he have any guts to say it out. But of course, thereā€™s no way the tiger would understand even if he did say it out loud. However, Wen Jin was confused. Even if it was just taking a whiff at him to begin with, it didnā€™t need to take this long, right? Also, if he smelled good enough, wouldnā€™t it just bite down directly? Why the hell is this tiger licking himā€¦Fuck, did his skin tear off?!
In Wen Jinā€™s opinion, perhaps putting up a tiny struggle would be much better than being licked to deathā€¦Even if he got mauled to death from angering the tiger, itā€™s still better than getting licked to death, right?
Holy shit that hurts!
He immediately turned around and threw a slap right on the tigerā€™s headā€¦And then, he was pressed down by the tiger again.
However, due to the time constraints, he couldnā€™t turn all the way around. So, he was pressed down on his side by the tiger for a while before the paw swept down again and pushed him back down. Whatā€™s more, he also had the desire to vomit blood right now, but before he could do that, the tiger began licking him again. However, the target was not his neck this time. Instead, it was slightly lowerā€¦
ā€¦Bro, you eating the cloth?
Wen Jin could not for the life of him figure out what the tiger was doing, so he turned back to take a look while trembling. The gigantic head of that tiger was moving right behind him. Wen Jin gulped. He was sure that if he ever dared to move, then the tiger would definitely push him down again with its paw. But itā€™s not like he could just wait until the tiger had enough fun licking him, right? Itā€™s hard to say, maybe itā€™ll feel like biting him again after itā€™s had enough fun?
But if he were to runā€¦He really didnā€™t dare to do that.
Wen Jin was still hesitating over whether he should play dead but he suddenly felt a breeze on his body. His eyes widened in surprise and he instantly thought, this tiger wouldnā€™t have thought about unpacking its snack before biting down on it, right? Wen Jinā€™s body suddenly trembled. Then, a gush of pain suddenly came from behind him. The tiger couldnā€™t control its strength to begin with, so his clothes werenā€™t the only thing to tear under its claws, his skin did as well. Wen Jin yelled out to the heavens in pain, and it caused the tiger to jump in surprise.
Besides the awareness of natural selection, an animalā€™s instinct also included the desire to reproduce.
In addition to the physical strengthening of these creatures, the red rain also improved their intelligence to a certain extent. At the very least, the tiger did not intent to treat Wen Jin as it would a tigress when it saw him. Instead, it resorted to more gentle methodsā€¦But of course, ā€˜gentleā€™ in its sense was still an unbearable form of torture to Wen Jin.
The tiger had seen many a human in its life, but this was the first time the tiger met a human that emitted pheromones. But it did make sense after some thought. If humans like these were common, then they would start pouncing on each other and fucking on the streets. Thatā€™s no much different from beasts like them kept in cages. But now that one of these appearedā€¦Fine, if a tiger can grow some wits and stop eating humans for a moment, then itā€™s not strange for such an odd human to appear, right?
The tigerā€™s head was muddled with thoughts for a moment, but it didnā€™t feel like it was able to think anymore. Right now, the sight of a bloody piece of meat right under its grasp filled its sight while its nose was overtaken by the humanā€™s fragrance, and this stimulation was gathering right at its lower body. The tiger kneaded its paws on the ground impatiently while it stuck out its tongue and began licking Wen Jinā€™s body.
Wen Jin felt like he could almost cry. When he saw the tiger expose its claws earlier, he thought he was finally going to be eaten, but the tiger actually began licking him againā€¦Fucking hell it might as well just eat him at this point!
But thatā€™s not right, he couldnā€™t even dieā€¦
Fine, he was truly in tears now. But when his tears would not come, Wen Jin had completely lost any idea of what he was going to do.
How damn unlucky was he? Previously, he thought it was pretty good to not die even if he didnā€™t have any special powers, but that was until he met this tigerā€¦Also, it was even a tiger he couldnā€™t throw off. He figured that unless he was truly dead, there was no way this tiger would let him off, but clearly, this tiger didnā€™t have that ability!
Wen Jin could feel that he was really going to cry. If this tiger finds out that heā€™s a renewable food reserve, what was he going to do if it ends up dragging his bones back to its nest?
But in the next moment, he realized he had been crying too early.
