CHAPTER 87: HOW ABOUT FORMING A PACT AND BECOMING A SOLDIER OF DARKNESS?
âA soldier⊠of DarknessâŠ?â
Blain raised an eyebrow at the cryptic words Sarles blurted out of the blue. ââŠDarkness, you sayâŠ? What the hell is that?â
âItâs a group that schemes a bunch of dark stuff, and Iâm one of their members. Theyâve taken an interest in you,â Sarles stared down into Blainâs eyes and continued, âwhich was one of the reasons I got acquianted with you.â
â!â
âIâve been given several missions, but one of them was to invite you to Darkness, Blain.â Sarles sighed. âIn all honesty, I wanted to progress things a little more cordiallyâŠâ
ââŠYesterday night, I was knocked unconscious and left in a classroom. The door was sealed with Hard Rock, and a Lighting spell was left by the door as a signal. Did you do all that?â
âSpot-on,â replied Sarles, grinning ear to ear. âYouâre a very, veery valuable and promising asset. I wouldnât want you getting munched on by some Zombie wandering the halls and kicking the bucket, so I did what I did.â
ââŠWhy⊠meâŠ?â
âThat goes without sayingâyour talent. Being a Hundred at your age? Youâre a one-of-a-kind. Whatâs more, you have the opportunity to be one of Darknessâ allies. If I recall, you have a rather unique background, donât you?â Sarles paused briefly before continuing, âThe Tragedy of the Milhis Householdâyou want revenge.â
ââŠâ
âI know you want power, so you satisfy the conditions.â
âSatisfy⊠the conditionsâŠ?â
âAbout this Contract of Darknessââ Sarles glanced at the flickering flame on his fingertip, âif you accept, youâll receive Darknessâ divine protection, and various facets of your power will improve. Your mana will improve in quality, too. Thanks to this contract, a student on the verge of failing managed to pass the exam in one go, so itâs tried and tested, yâknow? HAHAHAHAHA!â said Sarles, laughing. âThe only thing in that head of yours is revenge, so itâs not a bad deal, right?â
ââŠWhat exactly would I do⊠after becoming a member of Darkness or whatever?â
âYouâll take part in Darknessâ activities. Well, that entails bringing about the end of this country.â
ââŠâ
âThat doesnât mean jack to you, right? Carrying out your revenge is all that matters to you, after all.â
ââŠAnd if I declineâŠ?â
âYouâll die here,â Sarles flatly declared.
There was no hint of humor in his voice. If Blain were to say no, heâd really kill him.
âIâd have preferred if you had more time to think over it, but now that itâs come to this, thereâs no way around it. Curse you and your shrewdness.â
âCanât you just force me to sign this contract or whatever without getting my consent?â said Blain, glaring at the flickering flame on Sarlesâ fingertip.
Sarles responded cheerfully, âYouâre a genius!â
However, he shook his head right after. âThat wouldnât really work. This Contract of Darkness requires both parties to come to an agreement. It injects itself real deep into your psyche in one go. You gotta submit to it, body and soul and all.â Sarles stared into Blainâs eyes and continued, âThat pretty much sums it up! Iâm on my knees here! Youâre my dear friendâI donât wanna kill you, Blain! Câmon, join our side!â
Blain stared back at Sarles and responded, âIâll be able to carry out my revenge and keep my life. Indeed, that doesnât sound like a bad dealâŠâ
âCouldnât agree more.â
Staring right at Sarlesâ smiling face, Blain said:
âBut I refuse.â
â!?â
âYouâve got it all wrong. While itâs true that revenge is my top priority, Iâm not about to throw everything else away for it. As if Iâd turn my back against the Kingdom!â
Sarles widened his eyes in surprise and whistled. âWoow. You might just end up dying here, yet you still have the balls to say that? Your revengeâs gonna end here, you know?â
âI could care less⊠This just means the story of Blain Milhis comes to a close here.â
âHah! Thatâs Master Blain for you!â
The black flame on Sarlesâ fingertip disappeared. Sarles took aim with his hand, pointing it at Blainâs face.
âJust for you, Iâll end it painlessly with a single shot, Master!â
Needless to say, Blain didnât plan on letting it end here.
Blain used all his strength in an attempt to push Sarles away. Then, he reached out to Sarlesâ arm to grab hold of it.
However, Sarles was an incredibly skilled fighter himselfâhe wasnât someone Blain could get the upper hand on while handicapped.
Sarles dexterously used his body weight to hold Blain in place, and with a sad-looking smile, he spoke, âWell, this is goodbye, Master. You were a good friend. If only you werenât so shrewd.â
Sarles pointed his right hand at Blainâs face.
All Sarles had to do was say the magic words, and it would all come to an end.
âŠFuckâŠ!
Blain grit his teeth together, realizing this was the bitter end.
Just thenâ
From the corner of his eye, Blain noticed something.
The rooftopâsomeoneâs on the rooftop.
This school building was shaped like an L, and depending on the angle, you could see the edge of the rooftop.
âŠWho⊠is that?
â
âImpact.â
The moment Liz spoke, Lauraâs body flew backward.
âUgh!â
She crashed into the rooftop fence with a loud boom, slumping down onto the floor.
âLaura!â
I positioned myself in front of Laura to protect her. I quickly shot a glance behind me and saw Laura clutching at her chest, groaning.
âNnghâŠâ
âAre you alright, LauraâŠ?â
âY-Yesââ
Laura stopped mid-sentence and violently coughed, but at the very least, she didnât seem to be in critical condition.
I let out a sigh of relief.
I was careless.
Iâd have never thought Lauraâs acquaintance, of all people, would suddenly attack herâŠ
I shifted my gaze to Liz.
Sheâs lost it. She had an abnormal glint in her eyes and a vacant look on her face. Furthermore, pitch-black, moth-like scales protruded from her back, covering her body.
âŠWhat is thatâŠ?
âDonât move. If you doâIâll shoot,â I said, pointing my right hand at Liz. She injured LauraâIâm not about to let this slide.
âP-Please wait, Albert!â
I heard Lauraâs strained voice from behind.
Clutching at her chest, she slowly stood to her feet. âLiz isnât in her right mind! You canât just hurt her!â
âYou say that, butâŠâ
I was at a loss what to do. Laura had a pointâLiz clearly wasnât sane. But thatâs the thing; I find it unlikely that we can get through to someone not all there.
âââ
Liz muttered something to herself and pointed her right hand at me.
Seems like sheâs ready to fight as well.
âLiz! Please stop this!â
In response to Lauraâs call, Liz made a pained face and groaned, her hands trembling ever so slightly.
âLiââ
âItâs pointless.â
Lauraâs fleeting hopes were doused with cold water.
Firvus approached us. âLiz is being controlled by the power of Darkness. Sheâs still conscious, so sheâll react to our calls, but thatâs it.â
âThe power⊠of Darkness?â
Firvus nodded in response. âLet me put it in simpler terms. Remember that frenzied spirit that appeared during the water quality investigation at Lake Bjarnu? Itâs the same thing as that.â
âAah.â
I certainly recall that spirit being contaminated by something black.
âŠ
âŠHuh?
I then realized something.
I shot Liz a glance. She mustâve been disoriented from Lauraâs call, as she was clutching at her head.
âŠI think thereâs still time.
âMr. Firvus.â
âHm?â
âContrary to your easy-going attitude, Iâve always thought of you as an instructor who really cares about his students. I respect you for that.â
âW-WhaâŠ! The hell are you saying all of a sudden!?â
Despite acting surprised, he didnât seem as put off as he led on.
âW-Well, Iâm glad you get it!â
âThatâs why Iâd like you to do me a favor. Thereâs something I really want to test to save Liz. Mind lending me a hand, Mr. Firvus?â
âSure as hell donât mind! Test whatever you want! Iâll allow it!â responded Firvus in high spirits.
Iâm glad heâs so up to it. Iâd feel bad about doing this without getting his permission first.
After all, this is the first time Iâve ever shot a personâs body.
âMagic Arrow,â I said, voicing the same old words.
However, my right hand wasnât pointed at Lizâit was at Firvus.
âHuh?â
Firvus let out a surprised voice at my sudden actions.
My white arrow pierced Firvusâ chest.
âU-UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!? W-W-W-WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING, ALBEEEEEEEERT!?â screamed Firvus. He rubbed his chest in abject shock.
Then, he suddenly stopped. ââŠWait, it doesnât hurt?â
âThatâs a relief.â
Itâs just as I expected.
âThis version of Magic Arrow got rid of the lakeâs contamination.â
As such, it wouldnât injure people; it was only targeting the contamination.
Thanks to Firvusâ self-sacrifice, I now know that my Decontamination Magic Arrow doesnât do anything to the human body.
Now I can specifically target the power of Darkness controlling Liz and purify it.
I can save Liz without wounding her.
Iâm out of the woods now.
I pointed my right hand at Liz and let my spell loose.
âMagic Arrow.â
Iâll start on recreator now, seems pretty short. Iâll post it tmrw most likely, thanks for reading.
