An end-term exam was being held just the other day at the academy.
I already had the Iron Emblem, so I was exempted from the test. Laura had yet to receive one, so she was taking the advancement test.
The result: she passed.
There was a Stone Emblem on Lauraâs collar.
âIt was thanks to Mr. Firvusâ one-on-one lessons!â
When we were serving in the war earlier, Firvus tagged along with us as a supervisor, but he also came under the pretense to instruct us as well.
For that reason, Laura received one-on-one lessons from Firvus during days we werenât fighting.
âWeell⊠I think Laura would pass even if I didnât teach herâŠâ
Despite saying this and that, Firvus seemed to enjoy teaching Laura, who had a good attitude and fast understanding of concepts.
By the way, Iâ
âAs if thereâs anything I could teach you. Go and sit in the corner and read Magic Arrow spellbooks or something.â
âwas treated heartlessly. After I did as he told me to, I felt like my understanding of Magic Arrow deepened another level.
Laura changed the subject.
âCome to think of it, itâs almost summer break. What are you gonna do, Albert?â
Those words made me remember something unpleasant.
Laura looked at my face and spoke in a panic.
âW-W-W-Whatâs wrong, Albert!? You look like youâre about to die!â
Did my face look that badâŠ? You canât really blame me, though.
ââŠIâm gonna return to my parentâs homeâŠâ
I responded with a slightly depressed voice.
Father remembered our conversation during our audience with the king. He contacted me after returning to his territory, and he requested that I return home once summer break started.
In all honesty, I wasnât really up to the idea.
To begin with, my parentsâ house was uncomfortable for me. I was compared to my brilliant younger brother since childhood, and I was even laughed at by employees behind my back.
And now Iâm going back thereâ
A sigh reflexively escaped from my mouth.
âI donât want to go back if possible, though.â
I felt my hand, which was sitting on the table, stiffen.
Something warm gently wrapped around my hand.
Laura had put her hand on top of mines.
ââŠI know that you donât have good memories of your parentsâ home. You opened your heart up and told me, after all.â
Laura gave me a smile, which looked like the soft rays of the sun.
âHowever, I believe lots of things have been changing since ten years ago, just as you have been, Albert. Thatâs why I think things wonât end up the same as last time. Youâre such a wonderful person, after all.â
Because of Lauraâs wordsâ
I felt the worries in my heart become lighter.
The words spilled from my mouth.
âLaura.â
âYes?â
âUh, if itâs okay with you, wonât you come together with me to my parentsâ house?â
ââŠHuh?â
Laura widened her eyes, seeming shocked.
âBy your parentsâ house, you mean⊠the marquisâ houseâŠ!?â
âYeah.â
âHuh, no, uh⊠A commoner like myself, wouldââ
âDonât worry about it. Iâll formally invite you. I wonât allow anyone to complain.â
I finished the rest of my proposal.
âItâd be a huge relief if you came⊠No, I want you to come. I apologize for being so pathetic for my age, butâIâm scared. Itâs been 10 years since Iâve seen my father, and itâs been 10 years since I went back home⊠But if there was someone I knew nearby, then I might feel a little more at ease.â
Laura intently listened to what I said.
I didnât want her to refuseâThatâs what I thought. If Laura was there, then there wouldnât be anything more reassuring.
However, this had nothing to do with her. Her precious summer break would end up going to waste. It couldnât be helped if she turned me down.
After listening to everything with a stiff face, Lauraâ
spoke like she was embarrassed.
âIf you tell me all that⊠then I wonât be able to decline.â
ââŠHuh⊠thenâŠâ
âIâm indebted to you, after all! If someone like myself would be of use, then please take me along!â
ââŠYou saying that makes me happy.â
I then realized my own thoughtlessness.
âAh! Did you have any plans on returning to your village for summer break?â
ââŠWeell, I was going to, but itâs alright. I donât really need to rush back.â
âWouldnât your parents be worried?â
âN-No⊠I think theyâd rather be in favor for itââ
Laura replied in a fluster while blushing.
âŠWhy is she blushing?
I realized something. Lauraâs father said something like this with a dead serious look:
âI want you to take my daughter as your bride.
A man and young girl were requested to marry each other, now they would spend their summer breaks together, and then they would even be brought along to his parentsâ house. This situation was everything Lauraâs father couldâve hoped for.
The moment I realized that, I went into a blatant panic. I hurriedly withdrew the hand that was touching Lauraâs.
âL-L-L-L, Laura! T-That isnât what I meant by this! T-That isnât what I meant at all, alright!? D-Donât misunderstand!â
âY-Y-Y-Y, Yes! O-O, Of course! T-This is as friends! For the sake of my troubled friend! Iâm just tagging along! Yes!â
We both saw each otherâs weirdnessâ
and we both laughed at the same time.
âIâm asking you as a friend. Laura, come together with me.â
