My old friend Flin stared at me, rooted to the spot.
I stared at my old friend Flim, rooted to the spot.
We suddenly reunited after ten years, so it was no wonder that it took us time to process what was happening.
ââŠUm, would you two happen to be acquaintances?â
Laura, who was out of the loop, timidly asked us a question.
âHuh, ah, yeah.â
It was Flin who responded.
âI know Albert from our school daysââ
âWait a second.â
I interrupted Flin.
âSorry, Laura. Could you step out for a bit? Iâll tell you some other time.â
âYes! Itâs alright! Well then, Iâll be on my way!â
Laura quickly exited the cafeteria after speaking.
I did something awful to LauraâŠ
However, I still couldnât bring myself to tell her about it.
To talk about my relationship with Flin meant that Iâd need to tell her I was once an academy student.
Iâd need to tell her how I failed the first time aroundâ
Deep down, I still had yet to get over it.
I probably need to tell her one day.
Laura told me about her own lineage, after all.
I have an obligation to do the same.
However, I didnât want to do it today. Itâs not something I wanted to readily talk about out of nowhere.
Flin sat in the seat where Laura once was.
âItâs been a while, Albert.â
âI guess so⊠I never thought⊠Iâd meet you hereâŠâ
âItâs not that surprising, you know? Thereâs a surprising amount of cases where graduates work at their former academies.â
Then, silence.
Flin changed the subject.
âSo you came back to the academy, huh.â
ââŠYeah. Lotâs of things happenedâŠâ
âYou havenât told Laura about it? Your return?â
âI havenât⊠My past isnât something I can talk proudly about, after all.â
ââŠI see.â
Flin nodded her head in agreement.
âI understand. I wonât say anything then, not even to the academy. There are still teachers from ten years ago, butâI donât think anyoneâs caught on yet.â
âThank you.â
âHowever, I know how you tried your best back then. I donât think itâs something to really be embarrassed about, you know.â
ââŠThe reality is that I ran.â
I shook my head.
âIâm sorryâI couldnât live up to your guysâ expectations ten years ago.â
âItâs fine⊠Iâm glad that we got to meet againâand Iâm glad you didnât give up on magic.â
Flin gave me a sweet smile.
Then, she presented the envelope to me, which was left on the table.
âThatâs right. I forgot, but here. Make sure you come along to the water quality investigation too.â
ââŠYouâre not gonna ask me if I can fit it into my schedule?â
âYup, since youâre being forced to participate.â
After telling me that with a smile, she stiffened her face and spoke in a whisper.
ââŠThey mean business by this, you know.â
ââŠWhat do you mean?â
âIâll tell you because itâs you, but keep this a secret, alright?â
Flin pointed her index finger upwards.
âLaura was just an accidental omission, but you were suddenly forced in on orders from the higher-upsâmake absolutely sure he participates, they said.â
âThe higher-ups?â
âThis is the Royal Magic Academyâmeaning, itâs an order from the kingdom.â
Flin shook her head.
âI donât know any more than that, though. Did you do anything thatâd get the attention of the kingdom, Albert?â
âI wonder⊠Itâs always been my intention to lead a pure, proper life.â
This was strange.
A student as mediocre as myself would be added to an elite unit of surveyorsânot to mention by orders from the kingdom.
âŠI didnât get what was happening in the slightest. I couldnât think of anything that wouldâve made this happen.
âHooow suspiciooous~â
Flin laughed with a chuckle.
âWell, who cares! A chance is a chance, after all! Capitalize on it and spread your wings!â
âIâll try and give it my best shot.â
I put the envelope aside.
âBy the way, is Lucard doing alright?â
I spoke the name of my other friend.
Iâve severed ties with Lucard, but I was hoping that Flin would still be in touch with him. Howeverâ
Flin shook her head with a sad expression.
âHeâs gone already.â
âGone already?â
âLucard died five years ago.â
ââŠHuh?â
Lucard⊠is dead?
âHow?â
âJust as he wished for, he became a Magic Knight. He had talent and a good track recordâhe was the pride of our generation. However, he took part in a certain missionâand he never came back.â
I couldnât imagine it in the slightest. That same Lucard, with his huge, sturdy physique⊠To me, Lucard was an existence that lived in a separate plane from death.
That same LucardâŠ
He was only 21 years old.
âI canât believe itâŠâ
âYeah. No one knows what life has in store for them. Who wouldâve known that a disaster like that would befall LucardâŠâ
Flin breathed a long sigh.
âYou should be careful too, Albert. Iâm worried about what we just talked about.â
âYouâre right. Iâll be careful.â
There laid a sanctuary, the insides dimly lit.
A large, black flame burned violently on top of an altar.
A single man stood in front of the flame.
Standing in front of the flame, he single-mindedly chanted an incantation. With every word that escaped his lips, the jet-black flame grew stronger.
It was as if the flame was consuming the incantation itselfâ
ââŠPhew.â
After finishing his incantation, the man took a step backward.
He clad himself in a black robe adorned with silver and gold threads. His faceâ
was indistinguishable.
The upper part of his face was concealed by a mask.
ThudâThe sound of footsteps echoed throughout the sanctuary, and a presence materialized behind him.
âMy, youâve been making quite the effort, day after day.â
It was a small-statured elderly man. He wore a snug hood as if to cloak the absolute entirety of his head.
âThe time is nearly ripeâWe of Darkness will no longer lurk in obscurity. Thereâs no time for fun and games.â
âThose are welcome words.â
The elderly man bowed his head with a snap.
âLord Lucardâhave you resolved yourself to bathe the kingdom that once raised you in darkness once more?â
âDo not call me by that nameâIâve cast it aside. Iâve already resolved myself since five years ago.â
âMy oh my. Iâve done you a discourtesy by testing your powerful resoluteness. Do forgive me, oh Son of Darkness.â
Then, the elderly man continued.
âMay the Age of Darkness befall anew.â
âMay the Age of Darkness befall anew.â
After responding like so, Lucard turned around and walked to the interior of the building.
For some reason, the figures of Lucardâs two friends from his school days suddenly floated to the back of his mind. They were engulfed by the smoldering flames of darkness.
