CHAPTER 10: ANNOUNCEMENT DAY! THE STORY TAKES A NEW STAGE!
Why am I so fixated on that examinee, you ask?
I had no intention to hide anything from my sworn friend Firvus. I effortlessly began speaking to him heart-to-heart.
âYâsee, the original plan was to have someone else be the inspector.â
âReally now?â
âBut the stars told me somethingâI had an omen that something âExtremely promisingâ was gonna show up, which is why I set it up so that Iâd go instead.â
âSomething extremely promising, huh⌠Would that be him?â
âIt might be. I took a Magic Arrow of his on a whim, but it was abnormally powerfulâit cut through my Hard Protection like butter, so I panicked and layered Diamond Protection on top of it. Despite that, I couldnât fully suppress his Magic Arrow, so I pushed it against the ground.â
I quickly raised my hand.
âIt was so powerful it made my right arm numb for a while. It was awful.â
âSo not even your defense magic could stop his Magic Arrow⌠Unbelievable.â
âWant me to tell you something even crazier?â
âWhat, youâre telling me thereâs more to this?â
âI wouldnât go out of my way to recommend him so persistently if all he had was an above-average Magic Arrow, you know. That examiner was talking about how his Magic Arrow wasnât normal and that he suspected cheating. Even I thought the same, or else I wouldnât have been able to wrap my head around that power. Thatâs why secretly left a spell on himâthe type that analyzes and informs me of the spell he used.
âYeah, and then?â
âWhat spell do you think he used during the second practical exam?â
âThe second? That was mana dispelling, wasnât it? It had to be Dispel Magic, right? Thatâs what the test was about.â
I shook my head.
âIt was Magic Arrow.â
âWhat?â
âAlbert used Magic Arrow during the second practical exam. Iâm absolutely positive he didnât use any other spell.â
âNo, wait a minute. That score report you read aloud earlier said he succeeded in dispelling mana.â
âThatâs right.â
âWhich meansâŚwait, so that means this Albert guy used Magic Arrow to dispel mana?â
âYeah, pretty much.â
âThatâs impossible!â
Firvus yelled in denial, then laughed loudly.
I wanted to believe the same thing. If this were true, itâd be enough of a shock to send the magic theory humanity has built upon back to the drawing board.
âThis has to be some sort of mistake, Carlyle⌠No, thereâs no way youâd be wrong about anything magic-related.â
ââŚThatâs why Iâm thinking of putting him under someoneâs management. Itâd be simple to observe him if he enrolled in the academy⌠Whaddya think, Mr. Academy Instructor Firvus?â
Firvus shrugged.
ââŚSo in the end, youâre dumping this on me?â
âWhy, of course. Iâll be expecting you to investigate the mystery student Albert and report to me.â
âAh, goddamnit! Youâve got some nerve, shoving this onto me!â
Firvus shook both of his arms and yelled, but he didnât look as annoyed as he led on.
âIâll be trusting you with this.â
I continued on with a dreary voice and expression.
âThis era of peace will eventually come to an end. The hands of darkness have begun extending their influence throughout the kingdom. I can only hope that Albert is the star that will save us from that fateâŚâ
On the day of the announcementsâ
After hopping from Magic Arrow to Magic Arrow all the way to the capital, I met up with Laura and headed to the main gate.
âI didnât even feel alive during these three days⌠I kept thinking about how I might failâŚâ
Looking a little worn out, Laura gave her depressing monologue.
âWhat about you, Albert?â
âI wasnât really that worried.â
âYour composure is amazing!?â
âThatâs not really what I meant, thoughâŚâ
She wasnât the only one feeling restless. However, I knew how to manage my emotions in situations like these.
I single-mindedly read spellbooks.
Naturally, only the pages with Magic Arrowâover and over again.
Thanks to that, I felt like Iâve deepened my understanding of Magic Arrow by another level.
The main gate finally came into sight.
âOooooow⌠my stomach hurtsâŚâ
Said Laura.
There was a group of people that looked like examinees gathered around a large, wooden board. They had their full attention on a paper affixed to the board.
A boy silently hanging his head, and a girl lifting her hands in delightâŚ
There laid the results that would change their destinies.
Before longâ
Laura and I stood before the wooden board.
Laura raised her voice first.
âI found it! Itâs right here! Number 390! And number 389! We passed! We passed, Albert!â
After looking where Laura pointed, both of our numbers were indeed lined up.
Iâm number 389, and Laura is number 390.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
It seems like I somehow managed to slip in. I was nitpicked during the first practical exam, and I was on the verge of timing out on the second⌠My written exam was probably average at best.
It was a miracle I got accepted.
âMRMAYORGRANDPAGRANNYMOTHERFATHERMYBROTHERSANDSISTERSANDEVERYONEINTHEVILLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE! YOUR LAURA DID IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!â
Laura seemed very delighted.
âYou thank your village a lot, donât you?â
âAh, S-Sorry about that! I got a bit excitedâŚâ
Looking embarrassed, Laura blushed bright red.
âNo, itâs alright. Are you that indebted to your village?â
âYes. Everyone supported me⌠They told me to do my best and sent me off with the money they raised! Thatâs why I want to live up to their expectations!â
âThatâs nice.â
âYes! AlsoâOf course, thank you very much, Albert!â
âHuh? Why?â
âIf you didnât nurse me back to healthâif you didnât bring me all the way to the capitalâI would have been disqualified before even taking the test. Itâs thanks to you I passed!â
âNo⌠haha, I feel embarrassed if you put it that way.â
âI really! Really! Couldnât thank you enough!â
ââŚI feel grateful to you as well, Laura.â
âYou do?â
âYeah. How should I put it⌠you made me think I should give it one last try. If I didnât find you collapsed that time, Iâd probably still be living quietly in that house.â
Laura smiled sweetly.
âIâm happy to hear that. I think itâd be wonderful if there was meaning in our chance encounter!â
âSeriously.â
I looked at the magic academyâs school building.
Until now, I couldnât even bring myself to look at it. Iâve changed now.
Thatâs because I decided to chase my dreams againâbecause I swore to myself I wouldnât run away this time.
Although I still have some trauma remaining, and I still feel the bitterness of my failure ten years ago in my chest.
Even so, I looked at the school grounds head-onâI was able to look at it.
This is where I would challenge the limit of Magic Arrow. Iâll prove once and for all that the miracle I glimpsed upon was no miracle.
âAlbert.â
Smiling softly, Laura held out her hand.
âIâll look forward to being friends studying at the same school from now on!â
