The political turmoil finally comes to a head in this chapter and we see Liu Shao lose his cool, once again for Jing Wan. We also see how much Jing Wan actually cares for Murong Feng - even though her mind might still deny him, her body certainly cannot. With the conspiracy and ‘fake relationship’ out of the way, will Murong Feng and Jing Wan continue to treat each other as sworn brother and sister, or will they finally accept the undeniable chemistry between them?
Encountering Love: Chapter 24
Jing Wan replied: “I have not betrayed you. If you trust me, you will know that I have not betrayed you.” Her gaze was scorching, watching him closely: “Jian Zhang, I would never betray you.” Xu Jian Zhang saw that there were flames in her eyes, burning with that kind of stubbornness; deep down, he knew that when she was like this, nothing could change her mind. In his heart, he also did not want to think about such an outrageous thing, so he convinced himself: Jing Wan is being like this because she has her own reasons. Finally, he slowly loosened his grip and said: “Okay, I will wait here for you.”
Jing Wan walked away, and the Third Miss was also worrying at that moment, and whispered to her: “Liu Shao promised that he would come, but why hasn’t he arrived yet?” Jing Wan responded: “I want to go to the Commander’s Estate to personally invite Liu Shao.” The Third Miss said with a smile: “You might as well,” and prepared the car to take her over to the Commander’s Estate. When Jing Wan was sitting on the car, her heart was beating as wildly as a hundred drums. The Tao Estate was near the Commander’s Estate, so she arrived within a few short minutes. From far away, she saw that the Commander’s Estate was guarded as usual, but she was still felt flustered and forced herself to calm down.
When she reached the entrance, she got off the car; the man at the door was familiar with her and said, smiling: “Miss Yin came? Liu Shao is still in a meeting near the back.” She did not know what the situation was, so she nodded and followed the corridor to the grey brick building. It just happened that Shen Jia Ping was leaving the building, and when he saw her, he did not show a thread of happiness, but remained calm and said: “Hello, Miss Yin.” Jing Wan answered quickly and asked: “Where is Liu Shao?” Shen Jia Ping responded: “The meeting ended earlier, but Commander Chang is grabbing onto Liu Shao and complaining with Xu Tong Zhi. The three of them have been talking until now.” While he was saying this, he also gave Jing Wan a meaningful look. Jing Wan’s heart was pounding furiously, and passing through the atrium, she went towards the reception room in the back; a servant opened the door for her, so she walked inside, and said, smiling: “Liu Shao, you promised me something but you don’t even take your promises to heart.”
Chang De Gui was holding onto Murong Feng, not allowing him to go, and if he had made an excuse to leave, Xu Zhi Ping, an extremely careful man, would have gotten suspicious. At this moment, when he heard the sound of her voice, he did not know whether to be astonished or glad, but he was more worried instead. As she walked in, he kept a straight face and asked: “What are you doing here? We are discussing important matters.”
Jing Wan replied with a smile: “The food is already on the table, the best part of the opera is coming up and all the guests have arrived. Liu Shao agreed to help celebrate my birthday, but you are still here!” Smiling, she then said to Chang De Gui: “Commander Chang, please come and drink a few cups with Liu Shao at lunch today. Liu Shao always boasts about Commander Chang’s alcohol tolerance.” Barely hiding her anger, her gaze as smooth as water, she casted Murong Feng a sidelong glance: “Let’s go. If you don’t go now, I’m going to get angry.” Without giving him time to say anymore, she grabbed Murong Feng’s arm and began walking towards the door. Turning her head to give Xu Zhi Ping a charming smile, she said: “Xu Tong Zhi should also come quickly. We are about to start the meal.”
Xu Zhi Ping saw that Murong Feng was resigned to being dragged out the door by her, so he called out: “Liu Shao, we’re not finished yet!” Jing Wan was very worried, and replied hastily: “What can you not talk about at the party? Hurry and join the feast.” Deep down, Xu Zhi Ping was already suspicious, but seeing her delicate appearance, he thought that if there was a trap hidden in this, they would not use a weak woman to spring it. After thinking this, he saw Chang De Gui heading towards the door with long strides. Xu Zhi Ping hesitated for a moment, but then also followed him outside.
Once Murong Feng exited the reception room, he withdrew a cigarette case from his pocket and popping open the clasp, he said: “Servant, light the cigarette.” When the people lying in wait on either sides of the corridor heard this, they rushed out and attacked the Xu and Chang Tong Zhis. Chang De Gui did not have time to react before he was pinned to the ground, and when Xu Zhi Ping realized that something was not right, he called out, reached behind him for his pistol, and rushed at Murong Feng. Shen Jia Ping had already jumped out to grab him tightly and they were rolling around on the floor as a crowd of guards hurriedly rushed forward.
It is customary for the military officers of the Cheng army to remove their firearms before entering the Commander’s Estate, and the Xu and Chang Tong Zhis had already removed the pistols from their waists, but no one was aware that Xu Zhi Ping had concealed another gun on his person. Murong Feng saw that the situation was becoming chaotic, but he remained very calm while protecting Jing Wan as they urgently withdrew. He watched as three or four people pinned Xu Zhi Ping to the ground and forcibly wrestled his gun away. He took a breath of relief, but then, he heard Chang De Gui yell and furiously shake off all the guards holding him down. He was once the most formidable warrior in the Cheng army, and when he leapt up, how could those guards keep him pinned down? Within the blink of an eye, he raised his hand, and to everyone’s surprise, he had also hidden a gun. With successive ‘pa! pa! pa!’ sounds, the guards threw themselves forward to block him. Murong Feng felt his body quake as Jing Wan yelled out involuntarily, but boiling hot blood had already dripped down to his hand. The guards had Chang De Gui pinned to the ground again and forcibly tied his hands and feet together. Even though he was on the floor, Chang De Gui still continued to curse wildly: “Murong Feng, you bastard! I took great pains to help your father conquer half of these territories, but you, brat, actually schemed against me! If you are brave enough, come at me alone! If I don’t kill you today, I will die with an injustice unaddressed…” Since his mouth had been stuffed full of walnuts, he could not curse anymore.
The two had been bound so much that they resembled dumplings, and Shen Jia Ping, who had been frightened out of his wits, hurried over to look at the blood on Murong Feng’s hand: “Liu Shao, where is your wound?” Murong Feng only grabbed onto the lapels of his uniform: “Call a doctor! Hurry up and call a doctor!” Only then did Shen Jia Ping see that he was embracing Jing Wan, who was as white as paper, and that blood was gushing from a severe wound onto front of her dress. A guard had already dashed off to call one, while Murong Feng, who looked like a caged animal, hugged Jing Wan tightly, his eyes flashing with a frightening energy. He seized the gun from Shen Jia Ping’s hand, who only had time to call out: “Liu Shao!” before the gun was pointed to Chang De Gui’s head. Surprised, Shen Jia Ping only heard a loud ‘pa! pa!’ noise before he had already blown Chang De Gui’s head off. Then, Murong Feng turned the gun around; Xu Zhi Ping wrenched his body away, struggling to get free, but Murong Feng had already pressed the trigger, and with successive shots, he completely emptied the gun of bullets. Then, he tossed the gun onto the floor, and as if just awakening from a dream, he lifted Jing Wan into his arms with some difficulty. Seeing that she was breathing feebly, so much that her breath was nearly inaudible, he staggered forward, crazily stumbling in his rush to carry her to the infirmary.
