Jiho awkwardly went down the stairs behind Jaeun, who excitedly ran out to greet the two people. And, with good timing, they met the two just as they were opening the door. Shin Jihye, who was expressionless, smiled brightly.
âJiho, Jaeun. Itâs been a while.â
âHello, Aunt. Hello, Yiwon hyung!â
âHi, Noona.â
âJiho. Why arenât you greeting me?â
Because Jiho ignored Yiwon standing next to Jihye, Yiwon came up to him and tried to act close. Jiho tried to shake off the thick arm Yiwon put on his shoulder, but the harder he tried, the closer Yiwon stuck to him.
Seeing this, Jaeunâs face stiffened.
âArenât you guys acting too passionately at home?â
âWhat kind of nonsense are you talking about?â
Jiho glared at Jaeun and he slipped out of Yiwonâs arms. With that, Yiwon started to make weeping sounds as he rubbed the corners of his eyes.
âItâs been such a long time since I came here but Jiho is treating me so poorly that Iâm cryingâŚâ
âWe saw each other a few days ago.â
âBut itâs been a long time since weâve seen each other here.â
âEverythingâs a problem with you.â
Even though Jiho rebuked him, it really has been a long time since heâs seen Yiwon at one of these family meetings.
Joo Yiwon isnât part of the family. But thatâs only by blood or law; Joo Yiwon has always been a part of the Shin family. The only reason he hasnât been able to attend these meetings is because of how busy he is these days.
Thinking back, Jihoâs mother had even offered to add Yiwon to the family register when he was 12 years old. But Jiho heard that Yiwon turned it down immediately. Although heâs never heard whyâŚ1
âIf we were brothers, would he have been less annoying?â
Since he wouldnât make weird jokes about how theyâre dating or whatnot.
When Jiho glanced over at him, Yiwon smiled as if he was just happy that Jiho was looking at him. Jiho frowned and turned away.
As Jiho entered the living room with the three people, his father, who had just been smiling, had a scary expression on his face.
Shin Jihye greeted her parents lightly first before Joo Yiwon politely bowed.
âIt has been a while.â
âOh! Yes, itâs been a while, Yiwon.â
âKeu-hm, hm.â
Although Jihoâs mother greeted him brightly, his father made it obvious that he was displeased and fake coughed instead of answering the greeting. Jiho, who was standing off to the side, pretended not to notice and asked him.
âDad. Are you cold?â
âNo, no. Itâs been a while.â
His fatherâs displeasure was odd. In fact, this isnât the first time heâs been weird like this. That being said, it hasnât been that long eitherâŚ
Maybe about ten months ago? Shin Joong Ho started to treat Joo Yiwon with disapproval.
He used to say that Yiwon is a guy who does anything heâs put up to, well, and that he wants to give a spot in the company to Yiwon someday.
But the way Shin Joong Ho looks at Joo Yiwon now is hostile, as if heâs looking at a thief trying to steal away his precious jewel.
His father isnât the type of person to hate someone for no reason, but from Jihoâs perspective, thereâs absolutely no reason for him to hate Yiwon. Jiho couldnât understand this situation.
Heâs not saying this because theyâre familyâJihoâs father is actually a really good person. His father runs Chungram transparently, and heâs known for giving good benefits to the employees.
On top of that, the person who readily took the orphaned Joo Yiwon in and raised him as his own son was Jihoâs father.
But why is he suddenly treating Joo Yiwon so coldly? Right now, Yiwon is paying them back2Â hundreds of times more than the grace they gave in raising him.
Whatâs even weirder is how accepting Joo Yiwon is of his fatherâs attitude towards him.
Yiwon doesnât seem the slightest bit discouraged, even though he was the one who matched his fatherâs hobbies like Go3, even more than Jiho, the actual son, did.
Even though Jiho doesnât like Yiwon, he feels like Yiwon doesnât deserve such unfair treatment like this.
Isnât Joo Yiwon humanityâs savior? He should be treated as such.4
Although he wanted to step in and reconcile the two of them, itâs hard to do so when he doesnât know what happened between them.
Additionally, his mother, who usually restores the peace in the family when something goes wrong, just had a vague smile on her face, as if she couldnât do anything.
Right when the atmosphere in the house was about to freeze over from the awkward atmosphere, Jaeun, who had been furiously darting his eyes back and forth, quickly stepped in.
âGrandpa. Iâm hungry.â
âYouâre hungry? We canât let our grandson be hungry.â
As Jihoâs motherâthe most powerful person in the houseâspoke, the atmosphere instantly cleared up. Jihoâs father fake coughed again before rising and heading to the kitchen.
While everyone else went to the kitchen, Jiho quietly followed his older sister, who was heading to her room to change out of her uncomfortable clothes.
âNoona. Do you know why Father is acting like that?â
âHow could you not know?â
His older sister chided as she laughed. Unable to understand what she was talking about, Jiho tilted his head. Jihye smiled.
âItâs nothing. Are you that clueless because you guys fought so much as kids?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âHeâs acting like that because Joo Yiwon keeps saying heâs going to marry you. Because two boys are saying theyâre going to marry each other.â
Jiho was being serious. He felt his worry wash away at his sisterâs words.
âJust that? Thatâs just a joke. Heâs been doing that since a long time ago.â
Even if heâs humanityâs savior or whatever now, Joo Yiwon was once a boy full of mischief. Though his friends all thought Yiwonâs jokes were a little unique, they all played along with them.
But when Jiho thought about his fatherâs age, the homoerotic jokes might have been uncomfortable for his father.
As Jihye took off her jacket and moved her hands to change out of her blouse, Jiho turned around without being prompted to. Jihye continued to explain while changing.
âThen try telling Joo Yiwon to stop. Father is mad because he told him to stop, but Yiwon is still making those jokes.â
ââŚHe was doing all of that even when Father told him to stop?â
âEver since the first interview. At first, he would call Yiwon to scold him every time he heard about it. Nowadays though, it seems like heâs so annoyed that he tries not to search for it anymore.â
âReally?â
Jiho thought that his family took Yiwonâs one-sided interviews as a joke until now. But to think that his father has been warning Yiwon from early on.
Joo Yiwon was originally an obedient child. Because he was living off of them, he rarely asked for anything from them.
Even though Jihoâs family pitied Joo Yiwon for being so conscious and hoped that he would treat them more comfortablyâŚ
They probably didnât want Yiwon to just ignore their words.
âHm⌠most of it? I donât know his private schedule, but he doesnât really have a private life besides going to meet you.â
âNo⌠I think heâs dating someone.â
âWHAT? Joo Yiwon?â
Having finished changing her clothes, Jihye appeared in front of Jiho. And she looked a little angry.
âWhoâs that bastard dating?â5
âThat⌠I donât know. I feel like heâs using me as a shield for his actual girlfriend while teasing me at the same time.â
âAh, I thoughtâŚâ
Jihye shrugged.
âYour words make sense but⌠itâs not like that. He really has no time. How would a guy who practically lives in the guild have time to go on a date?â
âThatâs⌠true but.â
âHa, well⌠When I think about it, thereâs no reason for me to get mad at him for dating someone else⌠No. No. If he starts dating another hunter, he might run off to another guildâŚâ
Jihye, who was seriously muttering something to herself, gripped Jihoâs shoulders with a resolute look on her face.
âEven if Joo Yiwon dates someone else and goes off to another guild, donât blame yourself. Itâs not your fault.â6
âOf course itâs not my fault⌠But would Joo Yiwon really go to another guild? Heâs done so much here.â
âThatâs true. Who else would that guy date?â
Unlike Jiho, who was still full of doubts, Jihye was nodding her head with a relieved look on her face. It seemed like she reached some conclusion for something Jiho didnât know.
âAnyways, Father isnât acting like that because he means it either. If he was actually angry, he wouldnât have even let Yiwon step a foot into the house.â
âBut itâd be good if they got along. Dad used to think of Joo Yiwon as his own son.â
âThatâs because⌠heâs become a little different from a sonâŚâ
As Jihye trailed off, she stared at Jiho. Then, she suddenly pinched his cheek.
âWh-what?â
âOur Jiho is so cute. Letâs go back down now. Theyâre probably waiting because of us.â
Come to think of it, a couple of minutes had passed since they entered this room. Since they usually start their meal altogether, everyone is probably sitting in front of the table and waiting for them.
Although Jiho had a lot more things he wanted to ask, since thereâs other chances to do so, Jiho followed Jihye out of the room.
Like Jihye said, the entire family had been waiting for the two to come. Judging from the tense atmosphere, his father and Yiwon mustâve clashed again.
âLetâs eat now.â
Fortunately, Jihoâs mother stepped in and started the dinner.
On the days where the family gathers at the house to eat, there is a tacit rule to not talk about work. For an hour or two, the family takes their time to eat and talk about small, personal things.
Every once in a while, the atmosphere would grow tense whenever Jihoâs father and Yiwon had the chance to talk to each other, but Jaeun stepped in each time. Thanks to that, the atmosphere loosened.
Jaeun isnât usually this active in family affairsâŚ
Jiho could bet one Lim Seung Joo that Joo Yiwon gave Jaeun money in advance to do stuff like this.7
After the dinner ended somewhat peacefully, Yiwon called Jiho.
âJiho.â
âWhat.â
âI have something to tell you.â
âWhat is it?â
âItâs hard to say it here, letâs go up to the room and talk.â
Yiwon grinned and wrapped his arm around Jihoâs shoulders. He moved his lips right next to Jihoâs ear and whispered.
âItâs about the guild. Wouldnât it be good to talk while weâre already here together?â
âIf itâs important, go through the guild procedures.â
âNot like that. I was just thinking about giving you some useful information.â
Information? If itâs something like that, thereâs no reason to refuse. Jiho nodded and decided to follow Yiwon. In this house, the rooms Jiho and Yiwon used are still right next to each other on the second floor.
