The next day, I was in the library with Eva, reading a book.
I was reading as normal, and Eva, in her normal little form, opened the book and started to read, Iâm not sure whether she could understand what it said or not.
The book Iâm reading is about the Red Dragon.
The Red Dragon has become a mythical creaure. I looked for a book about them and was lucky enough to find one in the library.
It was a biography-style novel about the life of the mythical Red Dragon, Evangeline.
I figured it was better to read it than nothing, but perhaps because the latter half of Evangelineâs life was about her becoming the savior of humanity, the book was just about praising her as an âHolyâ creature.
Itâs fascinating, butâŚ
Itâs okay that Evangeline â the main protagonist â is lauded and things do go well, because itâs more fun than watching her fail, but it didnât add a single millimeter of information about the Red Dragonâs biology, abilities, and characteristics.
âKyu?â
In response to my murmur, Eva over here lifted her head and peered at me.
âI just thought it would be nice to find a book about red dragons.â
I said, caressing Evaâs head.
When I stroked her, she pressed her whole body against mine, expressing her happiness.
That made me happy, too, and I stroked her more.
Itâs been less than a day since we met, but Iâve gotten used to petting Eva.
I think I should stop reading for the day and take Eva out to play with me.
I was getting ready to do just that whenâŚ
âOh, there you are, Mateo.â
âGrandpa?â
I could tell by the voice and tone of voice that my grandfather was here again.
I turned toward the voice â toward the door â and another elderly man had shown up with him.
Who is that man?
âLook, itâs Ruth, the one I always talk about.
âThe Marquis of Wolfe?â
I was so startled that I stood up and hastily bowed.
Heâs the most distinguished person Iâve ever met.
âŚâŚ No, my grandfather is a duke, and heâs more powerful than the Marquis, but my grandfather doteâs on his grandson, me, and I donât think of him as a great man at all because heâs an old fool.
So, the Marquis Wolfe is the most distinguished person Iâve ever met in my life, including my life before.
âHeâs very well mannered. And he seems like a clever boy.â
âOf course he is, heâs my grandson. Heâs the wisest boy in the world.â
âWhat do you mean?!, the smartest girl in the world is my granddaughter!â
âWhat?ăI admit that your granddaughter is beautiful, but she canât be any smarter than Mateo.â
âWhat do you mean! There is no one in the world smarter than Lynnâ
âWhat?â
âYou want to do it?â
The two old men were scowling at each other at eye level, so close that their foreheads were touching, and sparks were flaring.
They were both bragging about their grandchildren, and I felt as if I had two grandfathers in my life.
I didnât know much about the Marquis of Wolfe, but I had a feeling that he wasnât much better than gramps.
Grandson and granddaughter.
If I take that out of the equation, Iâd say the granddaughter is probably more adorable.
Well, that was all I had to say.
âOkay, Iâll bring Lynn next time. Letâs see whoâs smarter right then and there.â
âAs you wish.â
The buzzing sparks were put off in an irksome way.
But if you ask me, I donât like this idea at all.
From what the two old men said, Lynn and I are about the same age, but Iâm actually a grown man.
I donât want to compete with a young child, even if we look the same and everything is fine.
But I know my grandfather well. Iâve heard a lot of stories about the Marquis of Wolfe, and now Iâm actually seeing it firsthand.
I guess I need to actually do something. âŚâŚ I heaved a little sigh.
âBut more importantly,âŚâŚ, is that the dragon?â
The topic of debate changed abruptly, and the Marquis of Wolfe looked at Eva beside me.
This is a great way to get the most out of your business.
âIt lookâs like a puppy, doesnât it? Are you sure thatâs itâs a Red Dragon?â
âIt is indeed. Iâm sorry, Mateo, but I guess youâll have to show this ignorant man some proof.
â The proof âŚâŚ Yeah, all I need to know is that itâs a red dragon, right?â
âYes.â
Then letâs go out into the garden, itâs too small here.
âRight. Good.â
âOkâ
The two old men led the way, I followed behind, and Eva walked briskly next to me.
âOnce we were out in the open, Marquis Wolff asked me, âSo what are we going to do hereâ
What am I gonna do now u ask?
âJust watch. Itâs Mateo after allâ
âYes!ăOkay!â
âI nodded widely, crouched down and touched Evaâs pawâ.
âHere we go.â
âKyuu!â
