Thirty minutes after the meeting in Patriciaâs residence ended, the participants were out in Ville Zentraâs open sea.
ăSo this is the ship developed in the New World.ă
Biosâs knightsâ commander regarded the vessel with great interest. Steered by none other than Grucel, they were on one of Dream Makerâs warships that could hold a thousand people. Even with the VIPsâ security detail accompanying them, the ship had more than enough capacity.
ăCan you see that ship over there?ăPatricia pointed at an empty cargo ship out in the distance.ăItâs about half the size of this one. Itâs too run-down now and was scheduled to be dismantled, so weâre using it for this demonstration instead.ă
ăHow far away is it?ăForestiaâs Army Minister asked.
ăAbout 500 meters.ăDoriachi answered.
ăDonât tell me youâre going to use those cannons.ă
ăItâs fine.ă
ăI find that hard to believe.ă
The Minister wasnât convinced, but Doriachi remained calm. Even with the cargo shipâs size, it was still too far away that it only appeared as a dot from where they were. Each country in this continent possessed magic or purely fire-powered cannons, but none had a range that far.
ăHitting it is impossible from this distance.ăthe Minister said.ăIf you can, itâll change the tides of war.ă
ăIndeed. Even if the cannons could reach it, they would most likely miss.ăBiosâs commander added.
ăWe wonât know until we see it. Just show us already.ăGelhart cut in bluntly, his eyes filled with excitement.
ăVery well. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, I suppose.ăDoriachi said.ăGrucel.ă
ăSir.ăGrucel answered.ăPlease cover your ears, everyone.ăăPrepare to load!ă
Dream Makerâs soldiers opened the gunsâ chambers and raised the warheads. Ten cannons were lined up on deck.
ăSir. Wind speed and direction within acceptable range.ăa spotter reported.
Grucel gave a slight nod.ăLoad!ă
Heavy, watermelon-like warheads were loaded into the guns.
ăActivate magic item!ă
A high-pitched shrill could be heard even with ears covered. At a glance, there didnât seem to be any change, but those with Mana Detection could see the barrel casting light.
ăPrepare to fire! Five! Four! Three! Two! One!ă
The moment the countdown reached zero, the cannonsâ roars in rapid succession, producing shock waves that rippled the observersâ clothes. The warheads, leaving behind a trail of smoke, followed an arched trajectory.
ăOhâŠă
No one knew who gasped in awe. Many did. Three warheads plunged into the sea, raising columns of water, while the rest hit the cargo ship. They could see fragments flying into the air as the vessel was destroyed and started slowly sinking into the depths of the sea.
ăThere you have it.ăPatricia said in a somewhat louder voice.
Even with their ears plugged, they still found it difficult to hear right away. Still many of them watched the sinking vessel blankly, forgetting to even remove the hands covering their ears. Such a powerful weapon did not exist in this continent.
ăKing Doriachi. How effective are these weapons against the monsters in Grand Dream?ăPatricia asked.
ăThey can kill common monsters in one shot, but there are those that rise back up no matter how many shots they take. One example is the Yamamaneki, a monster as tall as the length of this ship. Our blast cannons couldnât kill them.ă
ăAnd thereâs many of those?ăBiosâs commander seemed flustered.
ăYes. About ten of them attacked when Dream Maker was destroyed. Tall walls canât hold them back.ă
The man gulped. He finally realized just how powerful the monsters in Grand Dream were.
ăHowever, Silver Face told us that by destroying the Yamamanekiâs core, we can kill them. As far as I know, there are no monsters that canât be killed.ă
ăI-I seeâŠă
Biosâs commander looked somewhat relieved. He shot a glare at Hikaru, as though saying âYou again?â Hikaru simply ignored him.
ăHey, Master Swordsman. Can you slice that shell?ăGerhardt said out of the blue.
ăEasily, if itâs only that fast.ă
ăThought so. I can probably do it as well. Iâm sure Gotthold can do it too with a little practice.ă
What? Hikaru thought. Slice what? Those warheads? Gotthold seemed to share the same thoughts as Hikaru.
ăI cannot do it.ăhe said.
ăNah, you can. Anyway, what Iâm saying is, some of us are as powerful as these weapons right here.ă
ăItâs not possible, Your Majesty.ă
ăIt is.ăThe king just didnât seem to listen.ăYamamaneki, eh? Interesting. Iâll crush them all. Gotthold, from today on, weâre going to train so you could cut an incoming shell from that weapon.ă
ăSir!ă
Gotthold stood in attention, though his eyes and tail seemed droopy. Poor guy, Hikaru thought. Yet he didnât refuse, showing just how loyal he was to Gerhardt and how much he respected the king.
Patricia chuckled.ăBeastman King, Iâm glad youâre optimistic. Very reassuring. Am I right, King Doriachi?ă
ăI-Indeed. I didnât think he would react like you expected.ă
Patricia already saw this happening. She deemed that demonstrating the true strength of the enemy would not have a negative effect, but rather, it would make them thrilled even. Perhaps she wanted to strengthen the allied forces by doing this.
ăIt might be a good idea to recruit skilled adventurers as well.ăLawrence said.
ăI agree with the Master Swordsman. Letâs go wild!ăGerhardt roared.
ăAnd who would pay them?ăPatricia asked in an exasperated tone.ăThen again, the more competent people, the better, I suppose. Weâll have to rely on individual skill in places where the cannons canât reach.ă
Patricia agreed to talk to adventurers. She expected that much fortune from the dragon stones. As a matter of fact, the Supreme Leader had already requested a lot of Vireoceanâs magic item researchers and experts to submit their research plans. Her goal was to improve her countryâs sorcery technology by performing studies that couldnât be done without huge dragon stones.
The first allied forcesâ meeting ended with various thoughts running in peopleâs minds.
A notice was sent to Adventurer Guild branches throughout different countries by the end of the dayârecruiting adventurers ranked B and above to fight monsters in the New World. Once again, skilled and powerful people gathered in Ville Zentra.
