The ice cold wind hit the face as they got off the bus to a bus drop off spot.
The bus route only goes so far, so they need to wait at an in between stop.
However the wait wasn’t long.
It’s a valuable transportation system for the town. Especially in the morning and evening hours.
It can be thanked to Natsumi’s father for it.
Surviving under a small metal hut at a bus stop in dead silence, they waited.
“Hikura-san, why were you at the shrine?”
“Because it is our duty.”
“Duty?”
“We must protect the mountains and trees that sleep during the winter, and witness the awakening of spring. We must improve those. . .”
“Huh. . .”
Those are quite good intentions. Speaking of the Hikura group. Opinions on them have divided the town in two ever since they entered the village.
It wasn’t just the land the hotel took up. It’s existence entirely uprooted a lot of the town, while destroying the peaceful environment of local businesses.
So it was unexpected to hear that opinion from a young lady of the Hikura group.
“But won’t your dad be worried about you being out there alone?”
“Father-sama has returned to the city, and will not return until next week.”
“Is that so?”
He has heard that the head office of the Hikura group was actually located in a city building far from the actual hotel.
Her father probably does all the work there.
Tomonori can relate somewhat to a father doing that.
“Still. . .Aren’t you cold?”
The occasional ice filled breeze hit their faces.
However Hikura-sama merely wore her uniform and nothing else.
“I am fine.”
She answered immediately.
“I couldn’t handle that.”
Tomonori was puzzled.
Just looking at Hikura like that made him cold.
She didn’t even remove the snow accumulated on her clothes or shoes.
\n
“But still. It’s cold. . .”
He removed his coat and muffler.
And offered it while he gave a light chuckle.
“Here. Take it. I’m still covered.”
He was wearing another layer of clothing underneath.
“. . .”
Surprisingly she wasn’t disgusted by the offer.
She simply didn’t know what to do.
However he was reluctant to give up because of how cold it was.
“See, this will block the wind if you wrap it around.”
He took the muffler and wrapped it around Kouko’s neck.
“. . .T. .Thank you-”
Right then Tomonori realized how cold he was now.
However the silence was broken from the sound of the bus coming from the distance.
(Thank goodness. . .)
The sound of chains around the tires and the flashing lights slowly emerged from the snow splashed horizon.
Then it stopped at the spot before them.
The door made a creak as it opened.
“Hikura-san, let’s quickly get on. This bus will head to the town. There you can go to the hotel.”
“Um, well I was actually- – -”
“It’s fine. Look, if you stay here you’ll get frozen solid.”
It’s hard to say no when he was so earnest about it. She didn’t resist.
She hesitantly followed him up the entrance.
“Have you ever ridden on a public bus?”
He could see somebody with her status never riding a bus. Based on her embarrassed face from the confusion it was also obvious.
“Y-Yeah. . .I’ve seen them before. . .”
Her face was bright red.
“Look, take a ticket number here.”
He took two numbered tickets at the entrance door, and gave one to her.
(She must be a real Ojousama.)
“Do you have money. . ?”
She looked down.
“I’m gonna pay.”
“Thank you very much. . .”
With that done. The two went to sit together at the back, which was made for four.
Immediately afterwards, the sound of the engine from starting to rev came.
Finally moving.
There was a bit of a dejected atmosphere after that.
Usually in this awkward state, they’d look at a mobile phone or smartphone to pass time, but it seems that they don’t have one.
Perhaps he should surely ask some about the rumors.
Fashion, drama shows/manga. Those were completely alien to Tomonori and apparently Kouko.
Furthermore, she is a beautiful girl. Like what shampoo she uses, techniques? Perhaps she would be interested in that.
Apparently she knew how to use chopsticks but not forks.
Eating ice cream and sherbet in the middle of winter.
Still he didn’t know what to do.
But he could note something. Despite coming from the Hikura group, she wasn’t cruel.
“Hm. . .”
After passing several stops, the bus was soon arriving at their destination.
“Next coming up is Hikura Hotel.”
The announcement said.
“Look, hit the buzzer here, it will signal to stop.”
She was hesitant about hitting it.
But their stop was quickly approaching and they may miss it.
Tomonori then hit it, and a stop light lit up.
“Just like that.”
Her eyes were round.
After paying, the two of them got off.
Tomonori’s house was still a little ahead. But it was within walking distance.
“W-Well, um we’re here. . .”
“T-Thank you. . .You saved me, Saeki-san.”
“Eh? Ah, It was nothing. Also just Tomonori is fine. Everyone calls me that.”
After some hesitation. Her slightly red lips then moved to say.
“Then Tomonori-san, please call me Kouko.”
“Haha, alright. Kouko-chan.”
For Tomonori, he always intended to interact with fellow peers in a casual way. He was more comfortable with it.
But he never thought he would be casual with a Ojousama from the Hikura group.
Then- – –
With that there was some still air.
Somehow it became anxious, like it was a bit hard to separate.
“I understand too. My dad is too busy to stay with me. I sort of miss him.”
“Tomonori-san, you too. . .”
“I do wish my father and I could be together more.”
“I understand. . .”
She then put her hand on her chest.
“Eh?”
Tomonori doubted what he saw for a moment.
Kouko’s uniform changed into a kimono.
“W-What are you doing here?”
That momentary shocking event was then caught off.
Their time alone was officially ending by the calls from another girl.
“Tomo. . Saeki-kun, what’s the matter? Why are you here?”
It was Yukiya Kitahara.
“Uh, Kouko-chan was just in some trouble.”
Tomonori and Kouko both looked away. It wasn’t just a little interaction, maybe a guide.
“Kouko-chan. . .”
As soon as it was heard. It became clear Yukiya’s fighting spirit was ignited.
“Oh, we meet again. And of course when you are trying to capture another man, you loose mountain girl.”
“I was doing no such thing. Today is a resting day for the mountain. Nobody here does anything to commemorate it. You wouldn’t know anything about that though. You poorly brought up, female monkey.”
“H-Hey you two. . .”
Grrrr- – –
Those growls could be heard between Yukiya and Kouko.
“Maybe we should handle this here and now.”
“Maybe.”
“This isn’t the place for this.”
“Oh so Yukiya really is aiming for Tomonori-kun.”
“It’s not like that. Oh, everyone-”
A Lot of girls quickly swarmed around them.
They must have been returning from karaoke.
It was Natsumi’s group, and Yukiya seemed to be a part of it now.
“Well here. I’ll give you this.”
Her tone seems to completely dismiss the group of girls.
“Ah, Kouko-chan !?”
“I’ll return the neck sheet, and return the favor later.”
She then took the muffler off and hung it around Tomonori’s neck.
“Thanks to you I know how to get home.”
Hikura Kouko then left.
“Well, I guess I did a good thing? Maybe I stuck my nose into it too much though.”
“. . .What are you hiding?”
Yukiya seemed unconvinced.
“Ohh~, Tomonori is already mixed in it.”
“Flanked by two beauties. . .I can see the jealousy already coming from the other boys.”
Okamoto and Fujisaki were already gossiping.
Girls are sensitive to these stories.
Surely this will be the talk of the school tomorrow.
“It’s different.”
Yukiya tried to dismiss it. But she knew regardless of what she said, it would be useless.
I know Kouko was an attempted murderer. But I kind of feel like shipping Tomonori and her. Their interactions in this chapter were really cute.
Also I do hope the feud between Yukiya and her doesn’t get annoying. At Least so far it is consistent with the conflict between Yukiya and Kouko. In this chapter, Yukiya was genuinely concerned for her friends’ health, and mentioned not their time or how they felt, but the circumstances Yukiya met her in the first place. Aka the attempted murder.
Next chapter in 2-3 days. It will be more 3rd person background stories, but it seems interesting.
*Edit. Going to probably be 4 days. Next will be a 2 batch chapters.
