Chapter 74 Candidate for Speaker
Mary Jane mustered up her courage and stated her second purpose for visiting El Tech Company, seeking employment for Peter. This was also what Mary Jane and Peter had discussed over the phone last night.
But in reality, Peter was worried about Mary Jane’s safety and on the spot thinking of using this reason for Mary Jane to agree to him tagging along with her to El Tech Company.
Although Dr. Octavius had lost his funding and was thus unable to give Peter a paycheck, he never had the intention of giving up helping Dr. Octavius. However, right now Mary Jane had voiced out the matter of employment, it was too late for Peter to stop her.
Leo was unaware of Peter’s thoughts. He naturally believed her, when she stated Peter was searching for jobs. According to Spider-man in his memories, Spider-man was constantly in the loop of ‘Unemployed——Employed——Unemployed’.
Moreover, Leo already had intended to recruit Peter since he coveted Peter’s web-shooters. It was as if a meat pie falling from the sky, there was no reason for Leo to reject them.
“Sure, El Tech Company is just starting up, so it’s lacking personnel right now. And Peter is a talented person, so…”
“Mr. Erwin, the company has its rules and regulations. For someone to join El Tech Company, they have to submit their resume, go through a written test, and interview before joining the company.” The sightless Matt, who was drinking water by the side, interrupted Leo. He addressed the company’s rules and regulations with a serious tone.
Heather hurriedly tugged at Matt, indicating him to not speak nonsense. Although Matt overstepping his boundary was suspicious, Leo was unable to be mad at him.
Who asked him to always talk about life dreams with Matt for no reason, trying to squeeze a mission out of Matt by all means? It caused Matt to be familiar with Leo and it was impossible for Leo to pose an aura of a leader.
For Matt to interrupt Leo, it was apparent he was confronting Peter, unwilling for Peter to join El Tech Company. Leo had yet to finish his words, nonetheless, it was obvious he was agreeing for Peter to be part of the company.
Due to Matt’s interjection, the entire situation became too awkward. Even Leo was feeling the awkwardness.
Leo secretly decided he must find some time to give Matt a thwacking to prevent Matt from acting too cocky.
Currently, Peter, who was done choking on the water, took a breath to relieve his chest tightness.
Peter was not inclined on joining El Tech Company. Since Matt suddenly voiced his disapproval, it was precisely what Peter needed. Therefore, he immediately added, “Mr. Erwin, Mr. Murdock is correct. It’s better for the company to follow its rules and regulations. Submitting a resume and interviewing are indispensable parts. If you don’t look at my resume and interview me, you won’t understand my working ability and it’ll be difficult to pick a fitting position. Besides, I’m not that familiar with El Tech Company. I’m not sure what I can do after joining. So, please don’t be hasty.”
Leo was bewildered all of a sudden as to whether or not Peter wanted to join El Tech Company!
If yes, then, Peter’s actions were superfluous. If no, then, why did Mary Jane say such a thing?
Not only Leo was puzzled by it, even Mary Jane was confused by Peter’s words.
“Pete, this is a good opportunity for you, you can’t miss it.” Mary Jane whispered to Peter in a low voice.
However, Peter remained silent, it was evident he declined Mary Jane’s good intention. Mary Jane figured it was Peter’s pride acting up and glared at the blabbermouth Matt Murdock.
Leo felt the atmosphere in the parlor stiffening up, he thought for a bit before a bright idea came, “Mr. Parker, what you’ve said just now was true. I admire your responsibility to our company and yourself. It just so happens our company lacks a speaker for our upcoming product launch. I wonder if you are willing to take up this role. You can use this opportunity to familiarize yourself with our company while it also is a good chance for me to test you.”
Without waiting for Peter’s rejection, Leo continued, “If you think you are not compatible with El Tech Company, you are free to leave after the product launch. Besides, as the speaker at the upcoming product launch, I can pay one thousand dollars as your payment. If you perform well, I can increase your payment.”
This time, Peter was tempted by Leo’s suggestion. It was true he had not much saving, or accurately, flat broke.
Because of Dr. Octavius’s funding issues, his source of income was cut off completely. It was impossible for him to pay the next month’s rent.
One thousand dollars indeed could solve Peter’s urgent needs. Moreover, according to Leo, Peter was free to come and go, not bound by any legal restraints.
Besides, it was difficult for him to focus on the research since Dr. Octavious’ emotions were unstable lately. It was pointless for Peter to go to Dr. Octavious’s laboratory, it was better to let Doc calm down for a few days.
More importantly, Mary Jane was silently nudging Peter, hinting at him to accept Leo’s suggestion.
He could not turn down Mary Jane’s good intentions this time, thus replying, “Mr. Erwin, thank you for your trust and understanding, I’m willing to try the role of a speaker. Also, your conditions are too tempting, it’s hard for me to turn down.”
“Then, happy cooperation! You can start coming tomorrow, I’ll arrange a position for you. El Tech Company’s product launch is set for next week, so you still have enough time to familiarize yourself with El Gen-1 and prepare your speech. I’m expecting a great performance from you.” Leo warmly shook Peter’s hand before turning to Mary Jane by the side and shaking her hand too.
Looking at Mary Jane being sincerely happy for Peter, another scheme emerged in Leo’s mind!
Leo spoke in a half-jokingly tone, “Miss Jane, seems like you care about Peter very much. Your relationship must be great, right?”
“We have known each other since we were kids and we studied in the same high schools and university. It’s only right to care for each other.”
“Childhood playmate, a pea in the pod. Are both of you in a relationship?”
“Sort of… Erm, we used to be!” Mary Jane was caught off guard by Leo’s question and right now her mind was full of Peter, so she subconsciously answered. Then, she immediately explained and her face instantly was flushed.
“Mr. Erwin, you always act unsuitably for your status. You don’t look like a board director of a company at all.” Mary Jane grumbled at Leo to ease her shyness.
Leo chuckled, “I’m not that old, at most older by three or four years. I also have similar interests and hobbies. So you should think of me as a friend instead of an employer. And between friends, it’s normal for them to pair up with each other! Looks like I guessed correctly.”
Peter by the side was full of smiles when he listened to the conversation between Mary Jane and Leo. His reason for calling Mary Jane was to make up with her and from the looks of it, he had succeeded.
Glancing at Peter who was as happy as a lark, Leo suddenly slyly said, “Peter, loving a lady is not enough with sincerity alone! You must satisfy her in terms of material too. From your performance during the tour just now, I’m very optimistic about your ability. So, El Tech Company will always welcome you.”
The reason Leo did so was that it was part of his thousand schemes to attract Peter to join El Tech Company. As long as Peter joined, he could slowly gain the web-shooter.
However, from the looks of it, the main reason Peter agreed to become the speaker was the one thousand dollars payment.
Therefore, Leo would help Peter to think of places that required the money…
