Chapter 70 Peter’s Purpose

There was silence at both ends of the phone.

After a long time, Peter’s low but firm voice rang out, “MJ, I miss you. Can we meet up to have a meal and talk?”

Mary Jane covered her mouth in excitement. She took a deep breath to calm herself down and said, “Sure, we should have a talk. When do you want it?”

“How about tomorrow afternoon?”

Mary Jane rolled her eyes endearingly and said impolitely, “Peter, tomorrow is a workday. I’m still working in the afternoon.”

“But aren’t you often running around in the city in your work time?”

“That’s part of my job. Besides, I have an appointment with someone else in the afternoon. I’m going to have an interview. So, how about in the evening?”

Peter on the other side thought for a bit and answered, “Sure, in the evening is fine. But MJ, can you tell me where you’re interviewing tomorrow afternoon? I’ll pick you up when you’re done with it.”

“Of course, I can. But you’re not allowed to be angry if I tell you.” Mary Jane pondered a bit before deciding to tell Peter the truth.

“Why would I be angry?”

“Because I’m going to interview a company called El Tech Company. The one that recruited a huge batch of students from Columbia University. At that time, I even wanted to interview them, but you stopped me!”

Peter instantly understood Mary Jane’s meaning but also recalled the real reason he stopped her from doing so.

When El Tech Company was recruiting at Columbia University, it was that stubborn donkey who organized the recruitment.

Peter would not casually enter Hell’s Kitchen because he made a childish promise to that person. But for Mary Jane’s safety, he sneaked in to look into that company.

It turned out all of the El Tech Company’s guards were Hell’s Kitchen’s ex-mob.

Thus, Peter suspected the El Tech Company was bad news. That was why he refused to let Mary Jane risk it.

Although Peter knew El Tech Company had many suspicious points, it was inconvenient for him to tell Mary Jane. He knew Mary Jane preferred to dig out the entire truth, so she would force him to spit out the source of the information

Since Peter did not want to reveal his identity, he stubbornly refused to let Mary Jane interview El Tech Company.

Even now, Peter still forbade letting Mary Jane enter the chaotic Hell’s Kitchen.

But why did Mary Jane suddenly want to interview that company?!

“MJ, why do you suddenly want to interview El Tech Company? Hell’s Kitchen is a mess and New York City had many places with news, like that Spider-man swinging around every day on the street. No one knows who he is. There’s no need for you to venture into Hell’s Kitchen.”

“It’s because the sole board director of El Tech Company personally contacted me. He invited me to attend their product launch.”

Peter was even more confused and could not help to press for more details.

Mary Jane was over the moon because Peter took the initiative to call and expressed his intention to make up with her.

Therefore, she truthfully gave a detailed account to Peter.

Several minutes later, Peter finally understood the whole situation. But he began worried about Mary Jane again

This Leo Erwin, why is he contacting MJ? What’s his purpose?! That stubborn donkey, Daredevil probably is hanging out with him. He even dragged most of the mob in Hell’s Kitchen with him. Something’s definitely going on here.

Youths who just fell in love really preferred to let their imagination run wild. Although Peter had a physique that was far beyond ordinary, his hormones were very honest. He subconsciously did not wish Mary Jane to take this risk.

“MJ, everything about El Tech Company, including Leo Erwin reek of problems. Don’t you feel this too?”

Mary Jane understood Peter’s concern, “I understand your concerns. I also had the same concerns initially. So, shortly after I left my work, I contacted an ex-Columbia University student that’s working in El Tech Company. I heard some good comments from her mouth. The salary is high and everything is in an orderly manner. Besides, she said the company just opened and many executive positions are vacant. So, everyone had a great chance of promotion. I have a general view of El Tech Company from her. I’m going there in the daytime since Hell’s Kitchen is safer in the daytime.”

Patiently explaining this much to Peter, Mary Jane wanted to show she had made preparations in advance to reassure him.

Mary Jane continued to reason, “Pete, you know I’m a journalist. Tomorrow’s interview is part of my job. We’re not kids anymore, we have to be responsible for our job. So, I’m going to El Tech Company no matter what.”

Although Peter was unsettled by it, he knew he could not keep arguing this matter with Mary Jane.

Thus, he had an idea and added, “MJ, I’m also free tomorrow afternoon. How about we go to El Tech Company together?”

Screw the promise with Daredevil! He has someone precious, I, Peter Parker, also have.

“Tomorrow I’m going to work, why are you going too?”

Mary Jane paused a bit as though having an estimation in her heart.

“Oh yeah, Pete! When you asked me out for a meal tomorrow afternoon, don’t you need to work? Is something wrong with your work?” Mary Jane detailly discerned something that went wrong with his job.

“Erm… It’s nothing, don’t randomly guess. I’m not fired. You know, recently I’m working alongside Dr. Octavius and some accidents happened with his research and he lost government funding. So… I was told to take a few days of leave.” Peter explained in a fluster.

Mary Jane was slightly saddened by it but she wanted Peter to face reality.

“Pete, you lost your job and you need a new one. Or else you won’t be able to pay the rent. You and I know you have no savings at all.”

“Yeah, you’re right. I need a new job and I’ve been trying to apply to various companies these last two days. That’s why I’m going to El Tech Company with you, I can ask whether they’re short on staff or not. You know I’m good at Physics and know a little about computers, so it matches the company’s specialty.”

Peter finally stated his real purpose.

Mary Jane was stunned as she never thought Peter could give her an irrefutable reason.

“Alright, wait for me at my office at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. We’ll go to El Tech Company together.”
