Pierce was personally brought up by Peggy and Fury was transferred from the army. The Security Council had been heavily investigating Pierce and Fury, delaying their release was equivalent to openly slapping General Ross and her face.
And it was slap after slap, who wouldnât be infuriated?!
General Ross unfortunately was an imperturbable person, a different kind of person compared to Lindsay. In these two days of discussion, he would find an excuse to leave the office when he was upset.
But Peggy couldnât leave as the S.H.I.E.L.D. was involved and she was S.H.I.E.L.D.âs ex-Director who just left her position for four years. More than half of S.H.I.E.L.D. was H.Y.D.R.A.âs spies, it was impossible for them to infiltrate within these four years! So, she had to bear the brunt!
It was already kind enough that the council didnât arrest and investigate her, and thus she couldnât simply ignore Lindsayâs decision.
But she was displeased by Lindsayâs haughtiness and defended with all her might, âMiss Lindsay, Director Pierce, Agent Fury, and Agent Romanoff had teamed up to kill the H.Y.D.R.A. leader, Sinthea Schidmt. This canât be an act staged by the H.Y.D.R.A., right? And now your interrogation with them fails to discover any issue, then how is it possible that they are H.Y.D.R.A.?â
Lindsay kept stressing about what Dr. Zola announced, âZola declared that Pierce and Fury betrayed the H.Y.D.R.A., so they teamed up to kill their leader. And this led to Zola launching missiles in anger for revenge. This logic is reasonable! Although this logic meant Pierce and Fury had turned into a leaf, once a H.Y.D.R.A., always a H.Y.D.R.A.! Even if they achieved a great contribution, we canât re-employ them anymore! Take Zola as an example, when you recruit him with Operation Paperclip, then what? At that time, youâve confirmed Zolaâs death and yet why was he appearing on the TV and speaking on behalf of H.Y.D.R.A.?â
Lindsay continued her speculation, âMaybe it was because of Zola secretly infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D., almost causing S.H.I.E.L.D. to end up as a second H.Y.D.R.A.!â
Peggy was rendered speechless by Lindsayâs rebuttal. She remained silent for a while before barely refuting, âI admit you have a point and your speculation has a concrete foundation, but what about Agent Romanoff? She isnât on the list provided by Zola and she was the one who killed Sinthea. Why are you still locking her?â
âEven more so for Romanoff! You said she killed Sinthea herself, but who witnessed it? On top of that, you should know better than me what her origins are! The âBlack Widowâ of the Red Room! And whatâs the relationship between Red Room and H.Y.D.R.A.? Iâm sure both of us are clear about that.â
Coldly chuckled, Lindsay said, âMaybe because of Fury recruiting her, she was lured into the H.Y.D.R.A. A gorgeous widow and a single man who is almost forty years old. HmmâŠâ
âMiss Lindsay, mind your language!â General Ross strode in and heard Lindsayâs words. âIf Fury were to hear your words, heâd hold a grudge against you. There are some stories that Iâm inconvenient to share, but I can guarantee with my integrity that Fury wonât be bewitched by beauty. Besides, talking bad on someoneâs back isnât something a good person should do.â
Lindsay could boss Peggy around, but she was immediately defeated when facing General Ross.
She widened her jaw, realizing she was in the wrong. Ultimately, she evaded the topic and said, âRegarding the investigation on Pierce, Fury, and Romanoff, the council still required some time. Today we are unable to provide a conclusion.â
âAnd how much longer will it take?â General Ross picked out a shred of meat stuffed in his teeth, spitting it out onto the floor, and continued, âAs long as you donât finish the investigation, my troops wonât be able to withdraw. And after a while, the media blocking outside the entrance will dare to write anything. When the time comes to cause public panic, this isnât a responsibility I can bear.â
Dr. Zola presented the fact that the terrorist organization, H.Y.D.R.A., still existed to the public. The citizens of New York City possessed a strong mind and werenât worried at all. But the same couldnât be applied to the citizens of Washington and other states. Without providing an explanation, they would barricade the White Palaceâs entrance in protest!
âI was going to talk about this!â Lindsay snorted, âMost of the S.H.I.E.L.D. had been investigated and now Pierce, Fury, and Romanoff were the ones left that required further investigation. General Ross, why arenât you pulling out your troops? Arenât you just providing the media with some stories?â
âHuh?â Startled, then General Ross laughed in return, âMiss Lindsay, do you know why I dispatch thousands of soldiers to surround S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ?â
âIsnât it for cooperating with the council to deter the H.Y.D.R.A. spies?â Lindsay frowned.
âFunny! If itâs just a few hundred spies, I wouldnât even send a hundred-man squad over!â General Ross coldly sneered, âThe reason I dispatch thousands of soldiers and numerous heavy firearms is to defend against Agent Romanoff! She is a Super Soldier and do you know how strong a Super Soldier is? Do you have any idea how destructive she is? Hmph, youâre still too young and didnât witness Captain Americaâs one-man armyâs feat!â
Lindsay was choked by General Rossâs words. She didnât imagine the real reason General Ross dispatched this many soldiers was for this. Not just her, but even the council president didnât expect it either.
Hence, facing General Ross, she was no longer haughty and honestly replied, âThe president told me this afternoon that Pierce and the othersâ investigation at least still needs a week to two weeks. And the final outcome of the three will be personally decided by the president.â
Thinking for a bit, she added, âRegarding Agent Romanoffâs uniqueness, I certainly didnât expect it at all. I will inform the president right away and try to conclude Agent Romanoffâs investigation first.â
General Ross nodded in return.
Feeling awkward to stay behind, Lindsay excused herself and left.
Once Lindsay left, General Ross said to Peggy, âBetween Pierce, Fury, and Romanoff, who do you think is the H.Y.D.R.A.?â
âI believe in Pierce.â Peggy firmly answered.
âHaha. I believe in Fury too.â General Ross laughed. Then, he stood up and excused himself too. He wasnât someone to sit behind a desk for a long time.
Leo hiding in a corner had heard the entire discussion between Peggy, Lindsay, and General Ross. Compared to the ignorant trio, Leo naturally was well-aware that Pierce was the real H.Y.D.R.A. and the kind with the highest status!
But Leo failed to imagine that Pierce was so capable that even the Security Council couldnât detect anything on him. Judging from the current situation, it was possible that Pierce could make it out in the end.
With a frown, Leo thought if that were truly the case, then he had to personally eliminate Pierce in secret!
Because according to his guess, âThe Undying H.Y.D.R.A.â finally one percent completion rate fell Pierce.
Soon after, he noticed Peggy also left the office. Pondering for a bit, he flew out of the office as well and went to look for Fury. Then, he recounted what he heard to Fury.
Fury sitting on the bed revealed a slight frown when he heard Leoâs words. But he didnât have any countermeasures either and could wait for the councilâs decision.
Of course, Leo wouldnât forget about Natasha. He flew to Natashaâs room and recounted the discussion again to her. The still reading Natasha sat before a desk and slightly nodded her head.
Seeing Natasha wasnât going to talk, Leo left. Finally, he flew to the detention room where Pierce was imprisoned.
This time, he hid in the shadows and observed Pierce for a while. He learned that Pierce was gradually calmer as days went by as if knowing he wasnât in any danger. Pierceâs gloomy face revealed a rare smile.
Leo contemplated and felt Pierce was a meticulous person that left no traces behind! Under the circumstance where other H.Y.D.R.A. spies were exposed, only Pierce alone could leave unscathed. This kind of person was the scariest. Thus, he decided he must quietly deal with Pierce!
But S.H.I.E.L.D. wasnât a great place to act and once Pierce was released, there was no telling where he would flee. So, why not place a tracker on him?
Thinking of this, Leo nodded and prepared to return to his lab to build a tracker to place on Pierce.
