The King of Despair and Divine Beast - Prologue

Synopsis: Tsukimiya Kuuga, who had the ability to see through people, used it to live a happy life while surrounded by his friends. One day, he woke up in an unfamiliar place and realized that he had turned into a beast. Kuuga, who understood human words but was unable to talk, ended up taking a part in a strange ritual――
From an early age, Tsukimiya Kuuga had a superb ability to see through things.
He would see through the people’s true colors, divide them into those he could trust and those he couldn’t and use that judgment to make friends. Even he himself couldn’t understand why he was able to do it, but there was no way he could get along with somebody that he knew would betray him.
Smart people started gathering around him naturally and he ended up in the center of the group that was always the focus of attention at school.
With his invincible discerning eyes, Kuuga had never been betrayed by anybody other than his parents, who he had no ways of choosing.
He lived a happy life, blessed by his good friends. Now, having been elected as the Student Council President in HS, Kuuga had chosen trustworthy officers and the way he worked was highly evaluated.
“Huh? What’s wrong, Tsukimiya? are you not going home?”
As Kuuga was absentmindedly sitting on his chair in the student council room, feeling strange unrest ever since the morning, he was called out to by the student council officers who were getting ready to go home.
Student council officers, who were admired by the whole student body, would after school assemble in the student council room as if they were busy, but frankly speaking, they hardly had anything to do.
Not troubling anybody, they would conduct a meeting while chatting with each other and casually make up documents and announcements. When any of the events were due, they would get busy as one would expect, but usually, they would pass time leisurely.
Right now there weren’t any big events planned, so although they would gather up, they would only drink tea and chat among each other.
His friends couldn’t possibly overlook how dazed Kuuga looked the whole time. He was quite conscious of the worried looks they directed at him from time to time.
And now, having noticed that Kuuga showed no signs of getting up even though everybody was already getting ready to go home and thinking that something seemed strange, they called out to him.
“...Sorry, you can go home first.”
“Is there anything you have to do?”
“Huh? There’s nothing at the moment, right?”
“What’s wrong, did something happen?”
As he shook his head and urged them to leave first, feeling apologetic for making them worry, but still not feeling like explaining the details, he was swarmed with questions.
“There’s just something I want to think about. I’ll go home before it gets dark, so don’t worry.”
His friends, who had never seen Kuuga fretting about something, looked at each other, wondering if it was really okay to leave. It showed just how rare it was for Kuuga to be worried about something,
His interpersonal relationships were particularly the strongest. It was because just by looking at a person’s face, he would be able to see what kind of person they were, and by talking with them for a little bit, he would be able to guess their thoughts and the feelings they had towards him.
And since various events that happened during one’s life happened due to humans’ will, Kuuga’s ability shone brilliantly in different situations.
That kind of person was at the moment worrying about something and trying to shade off his friends. It must’ve been unavoidable for his friends to feel suspicious.
But as expected, the situation wasn’t something that could be easily explained.
Looking at Kuuga, who looked apologetic but didn’t say anything else, his friends gave up on inquiring, convinced that they wouldn’t be able to get anything more out from him.
Sending off his friends, who told him to not push himself and leave early before leaving themselves, Kuuga exhaled a little and leaned back.
He once again returned to his thoughts while blankly staring at the sky that was dyed red.
He had never been betrayed by his friends, and consequently, he had never betrayed his friends either.
“―― I might...betray you.”
It wouldn’t be a betrayal out of a free will. However, he felt like the situation with no way out would be the primary reason.
Unfortunately, his senses were excellent. His bad premonitions would definitely come true.
Somehow, he felt like he couldn’t return to this place anymore.
He didn’t know what would happen to him. But he was sure that he couldn’t meet his friends ever again.
Without being able to come up with a solution, Kuuga left the student council room while still feeling vague anxiety.
―― After that day, Tsukimiya Kuuga disappeared.
