The bells from Time Plaza had resulted in large masses of zombies headed that way, and combined with Lu Ren’s massacre, their journey was relatively safe and they were able to avoid any wandering zombies.

“Where are we going now?” Lin Jue asked during a break.

“The library.”

“But there should be a lot of zombies there; the self-study rooms are still open,” Lin Jue hesitated.

Song Hanzang shook his head. “Today is Friday, remember? The library closes at eight every Friday, so it should be relatively empty. The only trouble would be if we ran into a group on their way back to the dorms. It’s a good thing that the plaza is fairly close to the library, so most of them should have been drawn away.”

The distant library was still lit, but there weren’t many zombies. Crossing the Pigeon Plaza in front of the library, the two were able to enter through the underground carpark, avoiding the zombies near the main entrance.

The interior was quiet with a few zombies loitering in the sparse hall. Since Song Hanzhang didn’t have any ranged weapons, Lin Jue stepped forward and prepared to get rid of the blockages.

He held his breath, lowering his center of gravity, and with each light step, slowly approached a zombie from behind. He felt none of the joy of hunting, only the disgust of approaching a monster.

Five meters, four meters, three meters… Close! The zombie sensed his existence and its steps faltered. Lin Jue immediately sped up, rushing forward like a leopard and striking down hard from behind the zombie- with the adrenaline rush, he was even able to smash its skull with that single hit. The zombie collapsed onto the floor and Lin Jue stepped onto its back before piercing the pipe through its broken skull, completely destroying its brain.

With a disgusting squelch of slime, Lin Jue pulled the pipe out, a horrible mixture of brain and blood sticking onto the pipe.

Lin Jue retracted his foot from its back and without sparing it another look. He made an okay sign to Song Hanzhang.

“A very good improvement, quite astounding,” Song Hanzhang praised plainly.

In less than an hour, this clumsy newbie who couldn’t even aim a chair properly had been equipped with the basic battle skills necessary to survive. The kill and his movements had been clean.

But having the technique wasn’t enough if he didn’t have the matching level of consciousness…

Lin Jue smiled shyly, happy like a student receiving the praise of a teacher.

“Lin Jue,” Song Hanzhang suddenly called out.

“What is it?” Lin Jue turned around.

Under the bright light of the library, Song Hanzhang stood in the middle of the marble-floored hall, handsome like the class dux that would be adored by girls. If you ignored the dead bodies littered around him, that was.

“If someone from the previous team had been bitten, would you have taken out the antibody?” Song Hanzhang asked.

“Depends on who it is.” Lin Jue considered and said hesitantly, “…To be honest, I don’t know either… Eh, I’m not sure. If it was Zhou Yuxiu or Gao Yifei, then maybe, but definitely not if it was Zhao Liangsheng or Liu Shan. I don’t like them. Just what kind of attitude were those?”

Lin Jue felt a sense of injustice for Song Hanzhang. If he hadn’t warned those people, they would have died already in Time Plaza, but they had still refused to trust him.

Song Hanzhang smiled lightly and gave no explanation.

Lin Jue however, was a little shocked at his rare smile and looked at him in curiosity. He couldn’t help but feel that… there was some deeper meaning behind his xuezhang’s smile.

Lin Jue scratched his head in a moment of uninspiration and followed Song Hanzhang into the elevator room. There were two elevators, one stopped at level four, the other at ground level.

“Are we using the elevator? Won’t it be dangerous? What if the door opens and there’s a zombie inside?” Lin Jue mumbled, but still let Song Hanzhang press the button.

“Use your brain and think. Do you think that an elevator stopped at ground level would have a zombie inside?” Song Hanzhang asked without turning around.

“Um…” Lin Jue suddenly felt as if his train of thought had been scrunched up like a ball.

In truth, the main reason why an elevator would stop on ground floor was because someone had come down from a higher floor, and the door would open automatically, meaning the chance of there being a zombie inside would be extremely low.

The elevator door opened with a ding. Song Hanzhang didn’t enter immediately and rather looked at the elevator stopped at floor four, deep in thought. “The only thing on floor four is the electronic reading room which closes at five on Fridays, making it relatively safe. There are three sets of stairs in the library so the possibility of getting cornered is also slim. Let’s go there for now.”

Lin Jue swallowed in disbelief. “You even remember when the electronic reading room closes?”

Song Hanzhang glanced at him sideways. “It’s written in the main hall on floor one. I saw it just then, when you were fighting the zombie.”

“…”

The two entered the elevator. Song Hanzhang pressed the button to floor four and said to Lin Jue, “There might be one or two zombies on floor four. Be on your guard.”

“How do you know? Didn’t you just say that there shouldn’t be anyone there?”

Song Hanzhang gave him a look that could best be described as an honor student looking at the results of a slacker. Lin Jue tightened his grip on his metal pipe, too embarrassed to say that he still didn’t understand.

With a ding, the elevator doors opened. The lighting in the room was much dimmer than downstairs, with only the vending machine emitting a faint glow, illuminating the area.

The instant Lin Jue stepped out, he saw a zombie wandering around the room. The zombie in turn had also smelled the scent of living humans and howled as it lunged towards him. Lin Jue, finally finding an opportunity to show off his skills, stabbed his pipe forwards, pushing the zombie back onto the wall, its limbs flailing around as it struggled. Without waiting for another attack from Lin Jue, Song Hanzhang walked up, and with the dagger he received from the plaza, pierced its temple in one blow.

The blood groove of the dagger filled with the zombie’s blood. Song Hanzhang frowned and wiped it on its clothing. A dagger with a blood groove was far less effective against zombies than a spear, which just showed how unlucky he was.

“Hey, you’re right, there really was a zombie here.” Lin Jue kicked the dead zombie, making sure it had completely died.

“Wasn’t it obvious? There was an elevator stopped at floor four, which meant that someone had taken the elevator to floor four, or someone had pressed for it at floor four. I had thought that it might have been the administrator of this building, but it turned out to be a student.”

After making sure there were no more zombies on the fourth floor, the two continued their rest in the elevator room. Lin Jue flipped through every pocket and finally found two one dollar coins. He bought a bottle of water from the vending machine and drank half of it in one gulp, but it only accentuated his feeling of starvation.

Noticing that Song Hanzhang was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, Lin Jue kindly passed the remaining half a bottle to him. Song Hanzhang stared at the opened bottle for a few seconds before finally accepting it, reminding, “Try not to drink too much if you don’t want to have to look for a bathroom.”

Lin Jue shrugged nonchalantly. “Nature is the bathroom.”

Song Hanzhang showed an obvious expression of disgust which Lin Jue decided to rule as the cleanliness typical of those studying medicine.

“I wonder how the other few are doing,” Lin Jue said.

“If they were able to safely arrive at the recreation center, some might be able to survive, but…” Song Hanzhang sneered. “The hope is too slim.”

”Why? Because there might be the Judas?” Lin Jue asked curiously.

“It’s not ‘maybe’, it’s ‘definitely.’ ” Song Hanzhang’s eyes were stern, his voice cold. “Did you not notice? When we met Lu Ren, there was already an extra person within us!”
