I should have applied as a student, so why am I the homeroom teacher for Class S? There was no way this wouldnât turn into a problem.
âSo what happened, you delinquent sage?â I asked Sieg, who was sipping at his water in Raindrop Innâs dining room.
âDelinquent. Thatâs the one thing I donât want to be called by you of all people.â
âSo? What happened!?â I yelled when he kept babbling on. Spare me the small talk.
ââI order Baron Grey Ines Navarro to take charge of the Imperial Magic Knight Academyâs Class S. Upon serving four years in this position, you will be allowed to graduate. So try your best to serve the empire!â or so says his Majesty.â
I feel like Iâm getting a migraine.
âLook here. Thatâs not a reason.â
âEven if you tell me that, someone like me couldnât even begin to understand his Majestyâs thoughts.â
After Sieg grandiosely shook his head, I got a feeling of who the true culprit was.
âReally, what are you planning?â
âI said it wasnât me, itâs his Majesty.â
This bastard. Does he plan on pushing everything onto the emperor?
âSo like, can I turn it down?â
âOf course not. Itâs an imperial command.â
Shit. Iâve been played.
âWhy is my name Shirabe? In fact, whereâd you even hear of that name?â
âIt doesnât look like you take that name, so thereâs no way I would know,â he chuckled with an âohoho.â An instinct to kill him right here flashed through me as I saw him laughing like the vice-shogun of a certain shogun who brings his seal with him everywhere.[1]
Shirabe is the name I use with the Commerce Guild. The name must have popped up when he was investigating me.
âWhy keep my name private?â
âHow unexpected. You wanted to publicize it?â
âDonât answer me with a question. Iâm done with your sophisms.â
âThere are some who are opposed to your enrollment here, so it serves as a camouflage of sorts.â
âAnd yet another forced reason.â
Thereâre people opposed to my enrollment. That in it itself isnât that surprising. I mean, an examinee changing the rules would surely bring about some opposition. Iâd be surprised if it didnât, in fact.
That said, impersonating an instructor was just too far.
âI swear on it; Iâm not lying.â
âThought itâs not like youâre telling the full truth either!â
âWell, you could say that.â
This bastard. He didnât hesitate at all with that reply.
âWeâre going nowhere.â
I only agreed to enroll into the academy as a student. I never even imagined that Iâd impersonate an instructor.
I really held back this time, but thereâs no reason to listen to their arbitrarily self-righteous orders. In fact, I never was the patient type.
âThe academy wants to accept you as an instructor.â
âHa! I never asked for that.â
Sieg elatedly perked up and said, âInstructors at the Magical Knight Academy gain the right to browse any library within the empire, no strings attached.â
âAny library within the empire, and with no strings attachedâŚâŚâ I parroted back.
Shit, they got me good. Books were like an extension of my thoughts, and they were humanityâs most precious treasures.
No matter how much money I make, that will always be something I want.
âHow about it? Do you still want to refuse?â asked Sieg.
âDo you really need to ask that?â
Sieg nodded in satisfaction.
âBaron Grey Ines Navarro, we appreciate you taking the position as the academyâs representative,â he said, standing up and bowing bombastically.
âStop saying stuff you donât even mean. Itâs really unpleasant.â
Sieg looked up with a creepy smile.
âThatâs not true in the slightest. Being an instructor at the Magic Knight Academy is fantastic. Youâve a lot of authority, a high salary, and if you decide to build your own academy in your land, the empire will place it under their protection.â
Build my own academy in my lands, huh. That could certainly prove interesting.
In any case, Iâd need to raise the young ones to change this empire. Thisâll be like a model case.
âSo when do I start?â
âThe month after the next, in April. When you take up your position as an instructor, youâll be elevated to a viscount. Youâll probably need to poke your head into the imperial palace for the ceremony.â
My peerage is going to rise again in such a short period of time. Ironic, as thatâs the very thing Iâm trying to abolish.
âGot it.â
âHere, this is your instructorâs robe and pendant. We donât do replacements, so donât lose âem.â
Sieg placed a cloth bag with golden embroidery onto the table and exited the inn after saying âthatâs all from me.â
God, that guy. Still, I canât deny that this is extremely beneficial for me. Iâll make the best of this situation.
âNow then,â I muttered to myself.
Iâve confirmed my enrollment, so Iâll travel back to my new territory tomorrow. Iâll need to pack some essentials for that.
Currently, Raindrop Inn was undergoing remodeling, so Iâll just be in the way if I stayed here any longer.
So with the sounds of hammering behind me, I left the inn behind.
[1] Pretty sure theyâre referring to Mito Koumon if you were curious.
