Chapter 3 â First Year High School\nVolume 2\n<hr class="wp-block-separator is-style-wide">\n\nSaito and Shindo apparently went to the same junior high school. Although they were not aiming for the same high school, they found themselves in the same school.\n
Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but we soon became friends.\n
âYouâre not very good at games, are you?â\n
Saito commented to me when I bought a game they were playing and we were playing it together.\n
I think itâs true. To begin with, I hadnât played many games since I was little. When I was in elementary school, I used to study as soon as I got home. I was taught that it was important to get a good nightâs sleep, so I always went to bed around 10 oâclock.\n
I guess thatâs why. It took me a long time to get the hang of the game.\n
âI guess games are really deep.â\n
âThatâs right. In a fighting game, itâs the attack and defense of a single frame. If itâs a racing game, itâs the detailed control techniques. Thereâs a lot of things you canât do unless you turn your brain to the full.â\n
âThatâs true.â\n
It was a world I didnât know existed. No wonder the rest of the world was obsessed with it. When I was in elementary school, I used to make fun of people who played games all the time, but now I can understand how they felt.\n
Having fun is important. We live by our emotions. As one of my favorite authors said: âWe live to satisfy our A10 neural systemâ. Money, love, and competition all exist to satisfy the mind.\n\n
âBy the wayâŚâ\n
Saito looked at Shindo and me and said, \n
âTheyâre going to decide on the committee soon. Have you decided what youâre going to do?â\n
âIs it mandatory?â\n
I nodded at Shindoâs words.\n
â Homeroom teacher said that we have to do some activity in one of the semesters.â\n
âThatâs a painâ\n
The look on both of their faces said that they were not interested in anything but games.\n
âThe ones that seem like too much trouble are the class committee and the library committee. If possible, Iâd like to be someone who only has to work hard one day a year. Maybe the sports committee.â\n
âDoesnât that require a lot of preparation?â\n
âYeah, I guess so. Then definitely not.â\n
Incidentally, when I was in junior high school, I was on the lifestyle committee. Again, there was very little to do. I just attended the occasional committee meeting.\n
âWell, you never know what youâre going to become, so just go with the flow.â\n
Shindo and I nodded. Itâs no use thinking about it at this stage.\n\n
The committee members were decided by the homeroom teacher.\n
The types of committees were almost the same as in junior high school. Basically, the duties at school are almost the same.\n
So my classmates knew which ones looked easy and which ones looked hard.\n
The most popular ones were the Beautification Committee and the Lifestyle Committee. Neither of them had much work to do, except for the occasional lunch break. The next most popular were the Broadcasting Committee, the Culture Committee, and the Sports Committee. These seemed to be more popular because they seemed to be fun than because they were easy.\n
Me, Saito, and Shindo all ran for the Beautification Committee.\n
âIf there are more candidates than the number of seats available, the committee members must decide by rock-paper-scissors.â\n
Our homeroom teacher instructed us to gather and play rock-paper-scissors at once. Sadly, Saito and I lost.\n
âThatâs too bad.â\n
We gritted our teeth in frustration at Shindoâs triumphant face.\n
In the end, it was decided that Saito would be on the election committee and I would be on the library committee. The reason I ended up on the library committee was that I lost the rock-paper-scissors game until the very end. It just didnât work out.\n
Apparently, being on the library committee is a lot of work.\n
Once a week, I would be tied up in the library. Apparently, the job consists mainly of working at the counter and organizing the books. I like novels, but I donât think I want to spend all my time in the library.\n\n
Three days after I was appointed to the committee, we had an early meeting.\n
There was one person from each class, and since there were four classes in each of the three grades, there were twelve people in total. I wanted to complain about the need for such a large number of people, but I couldnât say much because I thought it might make my job easier.\n
âNow, Iâm going to explain to you what we do.â\n
The lady librarian said. She was probably in her late thirties.\n\n
There were three main things:\n
The first is to work at the counter, accepting book loans and borrowing.\n
The second is to organize the books. This includes deciding on the layout of the books and requesting the return of books that have not been returned by the due date.\n
The third is the work related to new book purchases. This includes deciding what kind of books to procure, registering the acquired materials, and putting stickers and branding on them.\n
Basically, we decide which day of the week we will be in charge of (Monday through Friday) and perform the first and second tasks on that day. The third is to be decided at the monthly book committee meeting.\n\n
âSo, the sooner you decide which day of the week it is for you, the better.â\n
As told by the librarian, the book committee members discussed among themselves. The upperclassmen took the lead in organizing the meeting, and we decided on a day of the week that would not interfere with our club activities. By the way, since I was in the science club, which I didnât know what to expect, I told them that any day of the week would be fine.\n\n
In the end, I was assigned to Tuesday, and since there were twelve of us, there would be two or three of us for each day of the week. Tuesday happened to be the only day of the week with two members.\n
The other committee member was a girl. Her hair was braided on the side. She looked mature. She spoke to me as soon as she was chosen.\n
âLooking forward to working with you from now on.â\n
And I replied,\n
âLikewiseâ\n
I thought she was a cute girl. I was thinking that I had no luck till then, but I might have been unexpectedly lucky.\n\n
The girl â Shiori Fujisaki â was looking at me with a soft smile on her face.\n\n
