Chapter 1 – Naoya Ookusu\n Volume 1 \n<hr class="wp-block-separator is-style-wide">\nThe science club operates in a place called the first laboratory.\n
The building where we usually take classes is Building 2, which is adjacent to Building 1 where the laboratory is located. After school, we walked out of Building 2 and went into Building 1.\n
Compared to Building 2, Building 1 is older. The walls and floors were aged, and even though it was made of wood, it was darkened in places. Sometimes you could hear a squeaking sound coming from underneath your feet.\n
Laboratory 1 is located on the first floor of Building 1. It is on the right side of the entrance.\n
As I walked in, I saw several otakus already playing games.\n
“Yo!”\n
A few people who noticed us called out to us. Some of them noticed us and called out to us, to which we replied, “Hey!\n
In the first laboratory, there were, of course, many lab benches lined up. We sat down near an empty lab bench. This room always has a peculiar smell. I guess it’s the smell of the chemicals stored on the shelves.\n
There are no specific rules for the activities of the science club. The motto of the science club is “to understand and study electronic phenomena”, which means “to play games very hard”. Occasionally, we do something science club-like, but our basic activities are still games. We even have a home video game console hidden away so that the teachers don’t notice it.\n
There is an advisor, but he never comes here. Even if he did, he knows the real situation of the science club well, so there is no need to be concerned.\n
We took out the portable game consoles that we had kept in our bags. We each start playing a game of our choice.\n
First, I decided to play a game for studying. It’s a game where you have to solve English grammar problems and guess the meaning of words. With midterm exams coming up, I need to spend as much time as possible studying.\n
Besides, surprisingly, these games are not so stupid. The most wasted time when studying is the time when you seem to be studying but you are not concentrating. Taking a break or playing can refresh you, but not being able to study and being tired is the worst. When I study with games, I don’t get too tired from studying and I can acquire knowledge properly. The questions are also well-designed, so it’s a great place for making output after input.\n
As I was solving the problems, one by one, I was suddenly tapped on the shoulder.\n
“Ookusu, let’s play ma-o-kart.” (TN: Mario Kart)\n
I looked up and saw the club president. He was still balding in the front.\n
But I decided to ignore him since I was playing in a mode with a time limit. There are times when this kind of inability to read the atmosphere appears, right…\n
“Hey, you’re ignoring me. You’ve got some nerve, ignoring a senior. You’re studying again. How serious are you?”\n
He was rambling on and on. As usual, I think he has a bad tongue.\n
Thirty seconds later, when the problem was finally over, I put the portable game console on the lab table and looked at the president.\n
“Don’t talk to me suddenly, I can’t react.”\n
“Sorry, sorry. I don’t care what it is, let’s play Ma-0-Kart.”\n
“No.”\n
I ignored him, not only because I was preoccupied with my English problem. I didn’t want to do it in general.\n
“Why not?”\n
“Because I can’t win anyway.”\n
The president is good at playing games. It wasn’t limited to ma-o-karts. He is good at fighting games, puzzle games, and music games. I’m good at racing games, but I still lose miserably to him.\n
“But even Ookusu can handle branches now, and some of the courses are 4 down, right? I’m sure you’ll be fine. When it’s time for me to lose, I lose too.” (TN:  I haven’t played Mario kart. So not sure what they are talking about here)\n
“…… Even though I’ve gotten this strong, I’m still no match for you.”\n
“You just don’t look in the rearview mirror often enough. Let’s do it.”\n
“Don’t always ask me out just because you can’t get anyone to play with you if not me.”\n
“… They’re all terrible, you know. ‘Even if I play with you, you’ll end up taking first place anyway’ is what they said, and wouldn’t play with me at all. On the other hand, Ookusu can win about once in five times.”\n
“Only once every five times, though.”\n
The president is so strong that he sometimes becomes a ranker. You have to be very lucky to win.\n
“Then I’ll give you a handicap. I’ll start about half a lap later.”\n
“The idea of a handicap is annoying to me. Why don’t you just play on the Internet by yourself?”\n
” Why do I have to play against the Internet when so many fellow gamers are here?”\n
I understand how you feel, but it can’t be helped. Ma0-Kart is a game that clearly shows the difference in ability. It’s not fun to play unless you’re at the same level.\n
“In any case, please give up. I don’t think there is anyone in this club who will play with the club president anymore.”\n
“…… I’m getting sad.”\n
He slumped his shoulders and walked away from me.\n
It’s not that he is disliked or anything. He is well-liked. He’s a bit of a pain in the ass, but he’s got a kind personality, and when the whole science club is doing something, he takes care of it. That’s why we sometimes play games together, but it’s hard to play every time.\n
I’m sorry, President, but I have to give priority to my midterm exams–\n
\n–I apologized in my heart as I watched the president start playing games online alone.\n\n
