Chapter 1 â Request from Enami-san\nVolume 2\n<hr class="wp-block-separator is-style-wide">\n\n\n
We arrived at a cafe in front of the station. It was a private store, not a chain.\n\n
There was an empty round table made of mahogany. The three of us sat down at the table. Jazz music was playing in the restaurant. I donât know what itâs called.\n\n
âWe donât come here very often, do we?â\n
âAt least, itâs my first time.â\n\n
I looked at the menu and ordered a blended coffee. Enami-san and Nishikawa ordered cappuccinos.\n\n
âThe atmosphere is not bad.â\n
Enami-san seemed to like it. After a few minutes, the drinks we ordered were brought to our table. After taking a sip, I said, \n\n
âSo, why donât you tell me what you need from me?â\n
The restaurant was quiet, probably because many customers came alone. Some customers came in in groups of several and had conversations, but no one was making a loud noise.\n
Enami-san and Nishikawa looked at each other.\n\n
âSo, Naocchi. You can cook, right?â\n
It was an unexpected turn of events. I thought she was going to talk about her studies.\n
âI cook every day. Not sure whether Iâm good or not, Iâm at least decent at it.â\n
âAnd you can do all the housework, right?â\n
âI also clean and do laundry every day, why does that matter?â\n\n
I couldnât understand where she was going from earlier. It also bothered me that Enami-san didnât seem to open her mouth much. She was frequently bringing the cup to her mouth.\n
Nishikawa looked at Enami-sanâs face.\n
ââŠâŠ All rightâ\n
After placing the cup on the saucer, Enami-san looked up. She was unusually stagnant in her speech. She moved only her eyes to the left and right.\n\n
âI need a favor.\n
I was surprised. I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be asked a favor by Enami-san. But what would it be about? I canât imagine.\n
Enami-sanâs face was serious. Her cheeks scrunched up.\n\n
âJust for a week. Can you clean my house and cook for me?â\n
I think I heard her wrong.\n
âSorry, repeat that. I didnât quite hear you.â\n
âLike I said, can you clean my place and cook for me?â\n\n
The repetition did not change the content. My hands were shaking. I poured coffee down my throat to calm down, but it didnât help my agitation at all.\n\n
âHome?ăYouâre not talking about Enami-sanâs house, are you?â\n
âYes I amâ\n
âYouâre not asking me to come into your house and clean and cook for you, are you?â\n
âThatâs what Iâve been saying. Youâre not getting it.â\n\n
Itâs not that I donât understand the meaning of Enami-sanâs words. Itâs just that my brain is refusing to understand. Itâs just too sudden and Iâm confused.\n\n
Nishikawa asked.\n
âHave you ever been to Risa-chanâs house, Naocchi?\n
I shook my head. Thereâs no way I have. I donât even know where it is.\n
âYou know,â Nishikawa said after a sigh. \n
âRisa-chanâs house is quite dirty, to say the least. Itâs not a dump, but itâs so messy that thereâs nowhere to put your feet. Dust is flying around when you move just a little bit, and the areas of water are covered with mold. We want to clean it all at once, but we donât have the manpower.â\n
âEh?ăItâs that dirty?ăIsnât it dangerous?ăI think you should hire a contractor.â\n
But Nishikawa waved her hand to the side, saying, âNo!â\n
âItâs expensive to hire a contractor. And there are other factors, so we donât want to do that. Thatâs why me, Naocchi, and Risa-chan should work really hard to clean it.â\n
âI donât get it. âŠâŠâ\n\n
I donât know why I have to help, or why they suddenly feel the need to clean.\n
She looked unusually dejected. By the way, she was late this morning. I wondered if it was related to that.\n
âIs it true that you donât want to hire a contractor because itâs expensive?â\n
ââŠâŠâ\n\n
When I say itâs expensive, it doesnât mean it costs hundreds of thousands of yen. I donât know Enami-sanâs family situation. But even if she is in that much trouble, I donât think itâs an amount of money she canât afford.\n
So that was what stuck out to me the most. Why would she want to go to the trouble of using all of us to do the cleaning?\n
Enami-san closed her eyes at my words. She didnât open her mouth. The cappuccino on the table was already half gone.\n
âI shouldnât have hidden it. I stand corrected.â\n
She twirled the spoon in the cup.\n\n
âYouâre right, itâs not because we donât have money that we donât hire a contractor. Weâre not that poor. Itâs just that I simply donât like having people in my house.â\n
âIâm a person too, you know.â\n
I wonder if it was a silly attempt at humor. Enami-sanâs brow wrinkled.\n\n
âThatâs not the point. Contractors are just people you pay. They are just strangers. I just donât want to let someone I donât trust into my house.â\n
Does this mean that she thinks me and Nishikawa are worthy of her trust? I didnât think she trusted me that much, let alone Nishikawa.\n
âWhy do you hate it so much?â\n\n
Maybe I shouldnât ask. But if I went to the house, I would find out the reason why she didnât want me to come home.\n
Enami-san seemed to understand this. She looked very uncomfortable.\n\n
ââI donât want people to see my mother.â\n\n
