Fish Fry
âDo you need olive oil?â
Asks Roxanne.\n
Before we were done with hunting for the day, we move to 6th floor of Valeâs labyrinth. Reason being, there are Naive Olives on this floor.
âJust a little.â
We hunt Naive Olives until one slot of my Item Box was completely filled with olive oil.\n
We finish hunting and move to Quratarâs adventurers guild.\n
Miria is excited and walks ahead of us.\n
Today is the day for the promised fish.
âFish~ fish~ fish~ desu.â
Itâs obvious that she hasnât forgotten.\n
We make a beeline for the fishmonger.\n
There are other things I want to buy but itâs not possible to buy anything before buying fish.
âIs there any good fish?â\n
âxxxxxxxxxxâ\n
âRock sole, she says.â
The moment Roxanne translates my question, Miria immediately points her finger at one.
âYou have a keen eye for fish. This pseudo-trout was caught just now. Itâs fresh and its meat is excellent. It tastes best when roasted or stewed.â
Rock sole is called pseudo-trout?\n
Well, it does resemble trout.\n
Its size is about 20 centimeters.\n
Just the right size.
âFour pseudo-trouts then.â\n
âThank you for your patronage.â\n
âHere are four pseudo-trouts for a special price of 28 Nar.â
So one fish is priced at 10 Nar?\n
Itâs not that expensive.\n
Compared to clams, especially.
I pay the amount to the merchant while Miria receives the fish.\n
The old man explorer wraps the fish in papyrus and hands it to Miria.\n
Carrying four fish is supposed to be difficult, it seems.\n
Well, if she wants to do it, thereâs no reason to refuse.
âIâll be making fish for Miria. Is there something you want to make, Roxanne, Sherry?â\n
âVery well. Sherry, would you like to make soup?â\n
âAlright, Iâll make soup then.â
I buy other ingredients like bread, eggs and vegetables.\n
We visit the hardware seller, who had been looking after our house before we rented it, and buy a pot.
âMiria, is there any utensil that you want for cooking?â\n
âThis pan is good.â
Roxanne translates.\n
Miria points to a pan with shallow base. It looks just like paella pan.\n
Handles are attached to both sides.\n
We indeed donât have such a pan in our house.
âThis?â\n
âWith this pan, she says that she can make delicious fish cuisine.â
Fish again huh?\n
I had to go for 30% discount anyway.\n
This pan would do the job.\n
After buying the pot with lid, which I chose, and the pan with shallow base, which Miria chose, we return home.
âMiria, can you fillet the fish?â
I ask her in the kitchen.\n
Miria gets down to it without needing Roxanne to translate what I said.\n
I knew it. She understands all those Brahim words which have even slightest relation with fish.
I leave an egg to boil.\n
Fish has been filleted already.\n
Miria brings filleted fish on chopping board.
âYes, desu.â\n
âItâs done already?â\n
âDone, desu.â
I receive fillets from Miria.\n
There are eight slices.\n
They have been carefully skinned.\n
It looks tasty already.
âCan you please squeeze these lemons?â\n
âYes, desu.â
Once again, she gets down to it without needing Roxanne to translate.\n
I add chopped vegetables, mayonnaise and lemon juice to the pot, and crush the boiled egg.\n
Itâs ready. Tartar sauce, that is.
âNow finely crush this bread. Like this.â
I pick the bread up in front of Miria and Roxanne whoâs translating.
âItâs called bread crumbs.â\n
âBread crumbs?â\n
âBecause I donât have cheese, Iâll use this as substitute.â\n
âI-Iâll translate it to Miria.â
Why is she making such a sad face?\n
She translates it to Miria and runs away.
I add some olive oil to the new pan and heat it.\n
I dredge the slices â which I had already seasoned with salt and pepper â in flour, beaten eggs and bread crumbs, and fry it in the pan.\n
After pouring some tartar sauce over it, fish fry is ready to be served.\n
Now that itâs ready, Iâll have the girls know that it wasnât a substitute for cheese.
This recipe involves very few steps, so the chance of failure is low.\n
Judging from the look, too, there doesnât seem to be any problem.\n
Miria is staring at it with watered mouth.\n
I hope itâs a success.
The moment the dinner starts, Miria digs into the fish fry.\n
When she stuffs her mouth with the fish, her eyes open wide.
âT-T-T-Tasty, desu!â
She seems to like it.\n
I try to eat mine.\n
Itâs indeed delicious.\n
The sour taste of tartar sauce is mingling quite well with the taste of the fish.
âItâs delicious. I have never eaten such a dish.â\n
âNeither have I.â\n
âItâs one of the fish recipes I know.â\n
âAs expected of Master.â
Roxanne and Sherry seem to like it just as well.\n
Miria looks depressed after having downed two slices.\n
Each slice was enough in its own right.
âHere, have mine.â\n
âThank you very much, desu.â
The moment I divide my slice, Miria snatches it.\n
Miria snatches half of Sherryâs and Roxanneâs as well.\n
Sharing food helps in developing better relationship.
Fish fry doesnât seem to exist in this world. I can make it however.\n
Caught up in the moment, I make tonkatsu next morning.\n
Although eating meat for breakfast is not a good habit, I get to eat only two meals a day in this world, so itâs not an issue.
It has been quite long since I last ate tonkatsu. (TN: Tonkatsu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonkatsu)\n
Although pork meat can easily be acquired on 13th floor of Tareâs labyrinth, itâs delicious.\n
Although thereâs no sauce here, itâs delicious.\n
It kind of reminds me of Japan.
âIsnât it strange?â
Roxanne says when we resume our morning hunt.
âWhat is?â\n
âThereâs a person ahead. At such a time as this no less. This person was there yesterday at the same location and the day before yesterday as well.â
Itâs indeed strange for someone to be at the same location in the labyrinth everyday.\n
Well, I too hunt at the same location for quite an extended period of time.
âIs it perhaps a monster that smells like human?â\n
âI havenât heard of such a monster. So far, I have been avoiding that location because I was supposed to stay clear of places with people.â
Because I use magic spells, I instruct Roxanne to avoid crowded places.\n
When there are people waiting next to boss rooms, we avoid boss battles as well.\n
Because itâs a bad idea.
Few days have passed since we advanced to 12th floor.\n
Since I can take out the monsters here in four spells, hunting has been smooth thus far.\n
Because we canât see anyone around, that person must be on the far end.
âNow that I think about it, I have heard such a thing.â\n
âDo you know something, Sherry?â\n
âThieves set up ambush in those labyrinths where not many people are found, like this one. Iâm sorry that I forgot about it because I heard it way back when I was a kid.â
Thieves?\n
Is that really so?
âNot many people?â\n
âMany people enter Quratarâs labyrinth, so itâs not best to set up ambush there. An ambush will be effective in labyrinths, such as this one, where not many people are found.â
There are three labyrinths in the Harz duchy.\n
I was asked of by the Duke because they were short of capable people.\n
Knights and explorers in the territory must have been divided in three groups.\n
So the people per labyrinth are naturally less.
âBut why here, on 12th floor?â\n
âMonsters on 12th floor are a lot stronger than monsters on first eleven floors, so people upgrade their equipment.â\n
âTo rob equipment?â\n
âIndeed. Those who advance to 12th floor, albeit barely, can be classified as intermediate. Thieves can overpower them with enough numbers. Even if they possess better equipment themselves, intermediate equipment can be sold for good sum.â
So, is this why they set up ambush on 12th floor?\n
Sherryâs explanation sounds rational.\n
So thereâs a possibility of getting ambushed by thieves on 12th floor?
âShould we wait until heâs gone?â\n
âIf heâs here at this time, you can safely assume that heâll be here all day. And there are less people at this time because itâs quite early in the morning. Itâs a good opportunity to break through.â
Roxanne is brave as ever.\n
Harubaâs labyrinth is in the north of Quratarâs labyrinth.\n
It must already be day here but I opt to remain silent\n
Because if I say that, Iâll have to explain that the world is spherical.
âWe should ask the order of knights for help.â
We have another option. Reporting it to Gozer, that is.\n
But we donât have any evidence. I canât say that there is someone who seems to be thief.\n
That thief must have entered through the entrance but he was not caught there.\n
Even if I use Appraisal, I canât present that fact as evidence.
If I kill this thief and collect the bounty, his companions might come looking for me.\n
Thatâll be bad.\n
Killing him is no good.
Also, if I try to claim bounty, Iâll need to have my Intelligence Card verified.\n
Gozer and the order of knights believe that Iâm an adventurer.\n
I canât have them see my Intelligence Card because Iâm an explorer.\n
So approaching Gozer is no good either?
âI donât think the order of knights will help anyone other than the Duke and his family.â
Sherry advises against asking the order of knights for help.
âThey wonât?â\n
âProtecting us is not their duty.â\n
âBecause Master is a free person.â
Roxanne supports Sherry.
âI see.â\n
âIt does seem difficult.â\n
âFree people are supposed to protect themselves. That way, they can preserve their privileges as a free person. If a free person requests protection, they lose their rights as a free person. Asking for protection is not the best idea.â
Sherry explains further.\n
I donât quite understand this but it seems to be a bad idea.\n
What I do understand is, thereâs no such thing as police in this world.
Protect myself?\n
I have to protect myself?\n
Isnât that my right? Isnât that their duty?\n
Itâs not like I canât ask for protection.\n
However, itâs not free.\n
Iâll have to pay the price.\n
Instead of asking for protection, canât I just have them listen to me?
Because Iâm a free person, Iâm supposed to protect myself.\n
Therefore, even if I say something in this regard, will they listen to me?\n
After all, Iâm supposed to protect myself.
âIs that so?â\n
âTherefore, we should break through on our own.â
So Sherry is brave as well?\n
Is this attitude rational in this world?
âxxxxxxxxxxâ\n
âOkay.â
When Roxanne translates our discussion to Miria, she nods as well.\n
Iâm not sure anymore whatâs right and whatâs not.
âItâll be alright. Thereâs only one thief. And we are not that weak either.â\n
âI think so too. Thieves set up ambush with the strength of normal parties in mind. On 12th floor, parties normally take considerable time to take even one monster out. We, on the other hand, take monsters out a lot quicker. Miria and I may be weak links of the party but against a thief, weâll do just fine.â
When Sherry says the same thing as Roxanne, it begins to sound rational.\n
Should we break through on our own then?\n
It seems normal course of action in this world, at least.
I killed thieves in the very first village I appeared in. I also killed thieves to fund Roxanneâs purchase.\n
But this doesnât mean that I want to make it my profession.\n
Besides, I donât want to put Roxanne, Sherry and Miria in danger.
If itâs one-on-one, however, I canât imagine Roxanne finding herself in trouble.\n
Sherry has leveled up quite a bit, so she can hold her own against low level thieves.\n
My concern is Miria who has only recently joined our party.
Well, we donât even know yet if heâs actually a thief.\n
He may be someone who happened to be at the same location for three days straight.\n
We have to confirm first.
I can use Appraisal.\n
I can identify immediately if heâs thief or not.\n
With Roxanneâs nose, Miriaâs eyes and my Appraisal, we donât have to be worried about surprise element.\n
If his level is too high for us, weâll just run away.
âMiria, are you fine with it?â\n
âxxxxxxxxxxâ\n
âYes.â
When Roxanne translates, Miria nods.\n
Is it really alright to confront this thief?\n
These three seem to be brave enough to do it, at least.
âOkay then, Iâll go ahead. If I raise my right hand with sword, itâs the signal to attack. If I raise my left hand, itâs the signal to retreat.â
I decide on the signal to retreat if something goes wrong.\n
I pull Durandal out and head to the location.\n
It would have been easy if I could use Meteor Crash.\n
For better or worse, however, area of effect attacks seem to inflict damage only upon monsters.
I prowl through the cave cautiously.\n
So as not to alert him.
âIâm sorry. There seems to be a hidden room. Earlier, I thought that there was just one. However, if the smell is from the other side of the door, there may be more than one.â
Roxanne apologizes.\n
Thereâs no one visible to the end of the cave.\n
The thief seems to be on the other side. Furthermore, not just one.\n
I canât use Appraisal from here.
I canât even go to Gozer like this.\n
I must confirm that theyâre thieves.\n
Itâll be better if theyâre some distance away from the door.
âEveryone, behind me. Roxanne, you take the rearmost position.â
With Durandal in my hands, I lead from the front.\n
