Chapter 2 â The author never expected the story to be so chaotic, so you canât blame him for being sad
Part II
âHey Aki-kun, would it be alright if I downloaded this big file?â
âSo long as it isnât anything that will destroy societal order.â
âOh no worries, itâs from a site you already bookmarked.â
âWhatâs with that yandere thoroughness, Megumi?!â
It had been a few hours since the two arrived at my house and were in the midst of taking a short break after lunch.
Katouâs last sentence prompted an immediate reaction from Eriri, who was fiddling with her tablet on the table at the other side of the room.
And standing in the middle of it all, I answered Katouâs question subconsciously, but my eyes were focused on two different sets of paper I each held in one hand.
As youâd have probably guessed, they were Utaha-senpaiâs two versions of the scenario.
âHmmâŠâ
âHmmâŠhow do I go about installing this?â
âThereâll be a readme inside after you unzip the folder.â
âWow, youâre right! Thanks, Aki-kun.â
âHmmâŠHmmâŠâ
Abandonedâ I mean, entrusted with making the final call on the scenario, I had been mumbling to myself for more than an hour.
âAll right, the installation looks complete. Now how do Iââ
âDouble click on the file with .exe behind the title.â
âOoh, itâs the title screen! Thanks, Aki-kun.â
âHmmâŠHmmâŠHmmâŠâ
But while Iâve been desperately scratching my head for answers, I havenât been able to get any serious thinking, analyzing or deciding done because of minor distractions like Katouâs sporadic murmuring.
Itâs not Katouâs fault though â itâs mine that sheâs free enough to play games in the first place.
If I canât decide where to take our circle, the scripting canât go anywhere either. If the scripting canât go anywhere, then Katouâs going to continue to act like a restless hamster and Iâll keep saying stupid things like these and my thinking will get nowhere andâŠ
âHmmâŠHmmâŠHmmâŠHMMââ
âShut up, Tomoya!â
âB-But Katou talked way more than me!â
âIâm fine as long she speaks normally instead of making stupid sounds like you!â
âOoh, I totally get what you mean! Like I can sleep with the TV on just fine but one mosquito is enough to ruin my entire night.â
âI know, right? I hate it when people snore. It gets on my nerves no matter how soft it is.â
âSo now you know why you need to shut up?â
ââŠOk.â
âŠAnd Iâll create the sort of vicious cycle that gets others (Eriri) irritated.
So consciously reminding myself to stay silent, I took three deep breaths and dove back into the text â into the soundproof world I had dwelled in since the middle of the previous night and past the break of todayâs dawn.
HmmâŠHmmâŠHmmâŠHmmâŠHmmâŠ
But no matter how much I read and reread, deciding on one or the other is as futile as trying to stop myself from making those meaningless noises in my head even when my mouth is shut.
When I read the first before the second, the latter seems to have more impact, but reverse the order and Iâll feel exactly the same about the original.
I cannot help but conclude that both are extraordinarily captivating and persuasive and equally so.
âOh, and by the way Aki-kun, donât you notice something different about Eriri today?â
âM-Megumi?â
On what criteria should I base my decision?
If itâs âmoeâ-ness, Iâll have to pick the first.
If itâs about drawing out an emotional response from the audience, Iâll have to go with the second.
If itâs in terms of overall balance, then the former would be the right choice.
If itâs all about the True route, then itâs definitely the latter.
âEriri always comes over in her tracksuit, but for some reason today sheâs decided on getting an upgradeâŠâ
âL-Like I said Megumi, you promised me wouldnât say anything about that today!â
Compared to the alternative, the original version feels shallow.
Itâs appealing, but nothing is surprising about the plot development, which makes it engaging for the majority of players, but also kind of⊠bland.
Then when I read the first after the second, itâs impossible to deny that the latterâs pretty amazing in its intricacy, but it just doesnât fit in with our original concept of a game that draws its strength from the charm of its main heroine.
Like Eriri said, itâs Kasumi Utakoâs brainchild â the type of game only connoisseurs will be able to appreciate.
âBut considering we spent so much effort picking it out yesterday, arenât you at least curious about what Aki-kun thinks about your dress?â
âW-W-Why would I be interested in the opinion of a 2D otaku? A-And besides, itâs all your fault for choosing such a plain one-piece dress, Megumi!â
âEhhhh, thatâs strange⊠I sort of remember you asking me to choose something not very outstandingâŠâ
Iâm a Kasumi Utako fanboy. A ăA Metronome in Loveăfanboy.
But is Kasumi Utako the person we need to carry this game?
âAki-kun?â
ââŠâ
I found myself experiencing the same feelings that I had not so long ago.
I donât want a âmoeâ-less Katou â a boring heroine.
Then cue Kasumi Utakoâs pen â adversity that can only make her more precious and more deserving of your love. Youâll wish you could reach into your screen and protect her from harm.
Only by marrying ăblessing softwareăâs veritable powers we will achieve a main heroine with the perfect combination of âmoeâ, âdereâ, melancholy, joyâŠ
âNnnnnnnnnnyaaaahhhh!â
ââŠHmm?â
âWhatâs going on? Whatâs happening?â
I was so perplexed by the two sets of paper in my hands I didnât see the golden blur of centrifugal force before it was too late.
I havenât experienced the twintail vortex in quite a while.
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
âSo Iâm not allowed to disturb your work, but youâre allowed to interrupt mine?â
ââŠShut up.â
Having finally collected all the paper strewn around the room, I turned to face Eriri, who had aâŠÂ weird expression on her face as she avoided my gaze.
âSo, whatâs wrong?â
ââŠNothingâs wrong.â
âYou wanted something, right? Tell me.â
âYouâŠdidnât hear anything I said just now?â
âWasnât that because a certain somebody wanted me to think really hard about this scenario thing?â
ââŠâ
âLook, Iâm really sorry, but weâll have to start from the beginning. So, what is it?â
âHmmâŠHmmâŠHmmâŠâ
âOk, now youâre really making me angry.â
âM-MegumiâŠâ
With her wrath from before gone without a trace, Eriri withered despondently and glanced repeatedly to the side, where somebody sat rooted to the PC.
âHmm? Oh, sorry Eriri, but Iâm in the middle of something.â
Katou was evidently absorbed in the trial she had downloaded earlier, playing with a desperation you could sense by the way she rhythmically clicked the mouse.
I noticed that while the two of them must have been in animated conversation only just a while ago, Katouâs latest answer was as flat as the computer screen.
Iâm not sure if I should be annoyed or impressed by her âtalentâ for atmosphere-reading.
âA-Ah, well, in other words, to put it simply, in conclusionââ
ââŠIn conclusion?â
âOohâŠâ
Cut off from aid, Eriri all but wilted over.
I canât figure out what it is she canât say that has her forming beads of cold sweat on her forehead, her eyes forever looking downward, and her hands trembling while grabbing not her usual tracksuit but the hem of her skirtâŠ
Wait, what?
âHey, I just realized butââ
âWhat? What?â
âYou and Katou have gotten pretty close recently, huh? Like how youâre calling each other by your first namesâŠâ
ââŠâŠâŠâŠWeâve been doing that for almost a month now.â
Ah, the trembling stopped.
âReally? But thatâs great! I still remember how your first meeting didnât go all that wellâŠâ
âAnd whose fault was that?â
âDonât you think itâs great that Katou has leveled up from ăClassmate Bă to ăEririâs Friend Aă?â
âThatâs more of a downgrade if anything.â
Well, jokes aside, it seems that Iâve managed to steer the conversation to an area Eririâs much more comfortable in.
All those hours playing galge were not spent in vain.
âAnyway, Iâm sure you and Katou willâ huh?â
âWhat is it now?â
âYouâre wearing normal clothes like Katou today!â
âA delayed reaction?!â
Iâd completely missed it before, but today Eririâs wearing a one-piece dress â with three-quarter sleeves revealing her shoulders.
Itâs not something youâd expect from a rich heiress⊠but then itâs not something a hikikomori would wear either.
Itâs been eight years since sheâd last worn a skirt in my room.1
âA-AaahâŠi-itâs something Megumi and I picked up from P**CO yesterdayâŠâ
âOh, thatâs pretty rare. Iâve only ever seen you wear our schoolâs uniform or something tailor-made.â
âW-Well, even I have to go out and get clothes once in a whileâŠâ
âI donât think youâd have the fashion sense to pull that off if Katou wasnât there though.â
âIâ Wait, I look good?!â
âLike a normal 3D bishoujo, yeah.â
âA bi-bi-biââ
âEriri?â
âThatâs, IâŠahâŠâ
As I was wondering why Eriri seemed to have suddenly lost the ability to form complete sentencesâŠ
âWoah! Come look at this, you two!â
âKatou?â
Katou demonstrated an equally dismal aptitude for grasping the situation as she suddenly cut in.
âM-Megumi, you interrupt at the worst possible times!â
âSorry, but isnât this Izumi-chanâs work?â2
âHuh?â
âWhat?â
But the initial shock of that revelation lasted only as long as it took for Katou to say her next line.
âThis trial is the work of Hashima Izumi-chan⊠without a doubt,â Katou said as she gestured towards the display â a CG3 of a kimono-clad girl dancing, but with a certain illusionary flavor.
Whether it was the design or color arrangement, the beauty or cuteness of the character, everything exuded an aura far beyond what youâd expect from doujin art.
But it wasnât the art I found myself looking at.
2Remember that cute kouhai illustrator character whoâs surprisingly⊠well-endowed for her age?
3Computer Graphic â still image found in VNs. Then again if youâre still reading this crappy translation you probably didnât need me to tell you that.
