âOh⌠Joshua SandersâŚâ The girl behind the wall, Sersiarin, seemed equal parts amused and bemused. The way heâd introduced himself made it clear he wasnât an aristocrat. No doubt she was confused to find a commoner wandering through the Imperial Palace.
âYou have a beautiful nameââ
âWhat?â
âIâve heard it in a book. Sanders, a flower that only blossoms in the Tripia region in the extreme east of the Empire; itâs said to be more beautiful than a rose in full bloom, but its meaning in the language of flowers couldnât be more tragicââ
âYou need to stop.â Joshua frowned.
âWhat are you sayingâŚ?â Sersiarin was perplexed. âDid I say something wrong? If thatâs the case, you have my sincere apologies. Please forgive my rudeness.â
âYou did nothing wrong.â He shook his head firmly. â...By the way,â he asked after a moment of silence, âis it uncomfortable going out of the palace without an escort? Are you alright going out alone?â
âHow did youââ
Joshua smiled sourly. âIâve also heard the story of the beautiful yet tragic Princess of the Hwahwa Palace.â
âAhâŚâ Sersiarin gasped. âCould you tell me more about the rumors you heard about me?â
âHmm⌠Hwahwa Palace is secluded from the world; there lives a beautiful princess whose looks are unmatched in all of historyâŚâ Joshua trailed off into a sigh. â...but it is said that she is blind.â
âAh, I⌠I never expectedâ I see.â
This is why I didnât want to see you right now. Joshua shook his head. Sersiarin sounded so lonely.
Joshua was well aware of the Imperial Familyâs hidden troubles; the reality was, the Princess behind the wall suffered the most.
The most likely reason the Emperor imprisons his own daughter is because sheâs disabled.
âThe eyes that see the truth⌠thatâs the most important thing,â Joshua mumbled, too quiet for anyone else to hear.
âI hope you donât feel sorry for me.â Sersiarinâs voice was laced with bitterness.
Joshua cursed himself. I know my mistakesâ
âI think I understand Young Master Joshuaâs reaction a little. The rumors⌠After all, my father has a reputation for being overprotective, right? But⌠thatâs not true. I canât go out because Iâm weak; I donât know when I could fall unconsciousâŚâ
Joshua bit his lips until they bled.
Master or not, Sersiarin saw right through the Emperor. She almost certainly knew the Emperorâs true motivation for imprisoning her from the very beginningâand the awful truth of the great tragedy that even some of the Imperial Family were unaware of.
If it were me, would I have acted like her when I found out the truth? Joshua shook his head. The reality was, it wasnât the kind of thing you could deal with in a rational manner.
âWhy am I cryingâŚâ Sersiarin could be heard sniffling behind the wall. âIâm fine, but why does it feel like you lost somethingââ
âArenât you sad?â
âYes?â
âYouâŚâ Joshua fumbled for words for a moment before resolving himself.
He had to make sure. Had she really known, all this time?
As for helping her, heâd decide afterwards.
âDonât you know why you were born with a disabilityâŚ?â
âWhat?â
âThe tragedy of your birth.â
She didnât answer, but that told Joshua everything. She knew, even before theyâd met in his past life.
âDamn itâ!â
This wasnât the usual place for the Emperor to receive guests; it was a private annex in the back corner of the Palace.
âI greet His Majesty Marcus von Britten, and sun of the Empire and the great Master of Avalon.â
âAre you the messengerâs daughter?â
âYes, Your Majesty.â She bowed. âMy name is Anna belle Grace.â
Emperor Marcus smiled warmly at the young lady. âDid you enjoy my present?â
âI am very grateful to His Majesty for his gift.â
âGood!â Marcus clapped his hands and laughed.
âBy the way,â he whispered furtively. âIâve heard things are a bit complicatedâŚâ
Annaâs expression tightened.
âHas he finally shown himself, after all these years?â
âIt was just a normal rumorâAvalon has Duke Aden von Agnus, and Swallow has Archduke Lucifer.â
âIs there any way out of this?â Emperor Marcus leaned back with a tranquil smile on his face. âNo matter how good of a messenger your father is, itâs not going to be easy on him.â
âTo tell you the truth, Iâm not sure.â
âHuh?â Emperor Marcus was surprised. It seemed the girl had the same sentiments as her father. No doubt it had to do with the peculiar spiritual bond between them.
Iâve never seen them say anything so weakly in all the years weâve known each other.
He didnât call someone a âmessengerâ on a whim. Her father was an undefeated generalâsimply unbeatable.
Draxia belle Grace.
And now, I just want it moreâŚÂ Marcusâs grin stretched wider.
He was of the same mind. Ulabisâs appearance was an entirely unexpected variableâeverything went wrong as soon as he appeared. Even the Emperor didnât expect the Swallow Empireâs latest defeat.
âAfter this, how dare you say youâre not confident.â
Anna struggled to breath, shivering uncontrollably.
âYou were one hundred percent confident in victory. That was why I showed you mercy.â
âYour Majesty the Emperorââ Anna clutched her neck desperately. With a low level of mana resistance, she was gasping for air.
The Emperor reigned in his mana, allowing the blue-faced girl to fall to the ground.
âUgh! She coughed violently. âHaack! Thank you for your eternal kindnessââ
The Emperor laughed at her pain.
âDo not interfere,â he said. âI will reward you with the Dukeâs seat.â
âYour Majesty,â Annaâs eyes were wide with astonishment. âWhat do you meanââ
âYour father would understand.â
Anna bit her lip as comprehension dawned.
Eliminating the border guards was unnecessary. That is to sayâŚ
Even this is a game to Emperor Marcus. Heâs insane, a madman obsessed with murder and war.
Anna quickly pivoted.
âBut this is too much, Your Majesty. I donât know if weâre able to accept.â
Marcusâs lips curled upwards. âJaken.â
âYes, Your Majesty.â
Anna broke into a cold sweat when a black figure appeared out of nowhere.
âWould you mind answering for me? Who dares to stand in the way of what I want to do in this Empire?â
âEverything is done according to His Majestyâs wishes,â the spy replied without hesitation.
âTell your father not to be concerned,â the Emperor said with a smile. âWe will proceed as planned.â
âYou meanââ
âNo stopping. Not until itâs over.â
The Emperor turned to Jaken.
âJaken. Prepare in secret; make sure nobody notices.â
âI heed and obey.â
âI am not a patient person,â Marcus said to Anna. âI will not be kept waiting for long.â
âWe will return as soon as possible.â
Emperor Marcus stood up and walked away, amusement dancing on his lips.
Anna, too frightened to even raise her head, was left to shiver in fear.
