The other Villas knights, waiting in the back, grudgingly drew their swords. Immediately, over a dozen people were blocking access to Veron. Count Rebreccaâs knights were reaching for their swords, too, when Joshua raised his hand.
âDo not step forward.â
âWhat do you mean, Young Master?â
âThis situation is my problem⌠I donât believe the Rebrecca Knights should become involved in this.â
âWhat doâ?â Doesnât this concern Young Lady Icelineâs safety? Even if Young Master Joshua is handling it right now, this still concerns Rebrecca. The knightâs shame was palpable.
But Villasâs knights, who had no idea who Joshua was, were absolutely perplexed by the situation.
How could the descendent of some family heâd never heard of act so boldly towards a Marquisâs son, Varon wondered.
Isnât that borderline suicidal? I certainly wouldnât object to a swordfight breaking out.
âThe Frederick family⌠Iâm not familiar with the name. What is your rank?â
âDoes it matter?â
âIt doesnât, really.â Veron burst out laughing. âAfter all, your family will disappear from history real soon.â The boy sneered. âYour sin was not understanding the difference between my heaven and your earth. Interfering in my business must mean you have a death wishâI wonât just wipe out your family, Iâll kill your dogs and every plant growing on your estate. Then youâll understand how foolish you were for provoking Veron Villas.
âThatâs how powerful I am.â Veronâs mouth stretched into a savage grin. âGet down on your knees, Ash, and I might be merciful to only cut off one limb.â
He didnât show it, but Veron was pretty pleased with the current situation. He was used to getting what he wanted: all he had to do was threaten everyone involved and theyâd apologize, beg for their lives, and fork over the goods. However, despite his prodigal habits, he knew a Marquisâs son didnât have the clout to challenge a high-ranking noble like a Count.
Well, itâs not that I fear the Rebreccas; itâs just that it would be a nuisance if the rumors reached my fatherâs ears.
As such, Veron was quite happy to assuage his pride by trampling the boy in front of him.
Heâs perfect. By all appearances, Joshua was the spawn of some low-ranking noble hick. Veronâs snake-like eyes glittered, and he licked his lips.
âThis is nauseating.â
ââWhat?â Veron was jolted out of his fantasies. âWhat are you up to nowââ
âI said itâs horrid. The smell of trash makes my stomach churn.â
The rest of the group was blown away by Joshuaâs offensive comment.
âThis kid!â Muker shouted. âHow desperate are you to die?! You donât even know how respect works!â
âRespect? For that thing?â Joshua howled with laughter. âIs that the same ârespectâ you use when you get a gang of knights together to persecute a woman?â
âMuker!â Veron decided that fun-time was over.
âYes, my lord!â
âHow much longer do I have to put up with these insults?â
âGive me the order! Iâll take care of it immediately!â
âImmobilize that insectâIâm going to kill him myself.â
âI apologize: it seems you need to die.â Muker hefted his sword. âYou were the one who threw away your last chance⌠You have no one to blame but yourself.â
âHah! âBlameâ, you say?â Joshua sneered. âThereâs no such word in my vocabulary.â
Joshua stepped forward to meet Mukerâs advance.
Three people sat in the private office of Viscount Steck in Locke Castle: the owner, Viscount Vig Beck Steck, an unidentifiable, gray-masked individual, and a girl. Viscount Vigâs empty eyes stared into nothingness while the other two spoke.
âItâs been a long time, Miss Anna.â The masked one bowed to the girl.
âItâs been a while, Ju-ang. I see youâve arrived earlier than expected.â
âI came in a rush when you summoned me.â
Anna just smiled.
âFigures⌠So, what did you want to talk about?â
âThereâs a problem,â Anna said.
âYou think itâs a problem?â
The girl nodded. âMaybe I should call it a nuisance rather than a problem?â
She seems to be in a good moodâŚÂ Ju-angâs eyes flickered with curiosity as Annaâs speech became excited.
âMay I ask what this problem is?â
âA monster has appeared in the Agnus duchy.â
âAre you referring to Babel von Agnus?â
âI see the rumors havenât spread too far yet, after all,â Anna said with a shake of her head. âAnother child of Duke Agnus has appeared⌠and, horribly, heâs a scumbag who outstrips Babel von Agnusâs abilities.â
Ju-ang was astonished; Babel was one of the most talented people on the continent, never mind the Empireâhow could some kid possibly compare to a genius like Babel?
âHow come you didnât report this sooner?!â Ju-ang leaped out of their seat. âYou could have used a communication toolââ
âThereâs a chance the information could leak.â Anna giggled when she saw Ju-ang clamp their mouth shut. âItâs been a long time since Iâve seen you, Ju-ang, so donât overwork yourself. This information will spread all over the continent anyways.â
âWhatâ?â
âHe could wield mana before ten years old. That kind of talent is the greatest of all time, in the continent and beyond. Do you think Avalon will stand still with such a treasure in his hands?â
âAh!â
âDuke Agnus will spread the stories throughout the Empire to elevate his familyâs reputation. In times of peace, like now, whispers like this can whip up a storm.â
âYes, youâre right.â Ju-ang nodded.
On the surface, it appeared they were living in an unprecedented period of peaceâbut the continent was closer to a primed powder keg.
The continent had been engaged in a quiet buildup of power. The simple folks might rejoice because their country had become stronger, but those in the halls of power whispered of ârebellionâ and âcivil warâ.
However, there was always a solution:
War.
âIn battle, the power of a âmasterâ is absolute,â Anna whispered. âNo country would fight a war if they didnât have a chance to win. So, they always need to know what the other countries are up to; the number of intelligence organizations has been steadily increasing.â
âThe right information could be a game-changer when the other countries decide to defend or attack.â Ju-angâs brow furrowed. â...I understand now, Miss Anna. But regarding the other son of Duke Agnus: his appearance is bad news for us. If you make a mistake, decades of your planning could go to waste in an instant.â
âIâm not going to let that happen.â Anna smiled bitterly.
âAre you thinking ofâŚ?â
âItâs simple. What if we could subdue that monster?â
âIs that possible?â
âItâs possible. Because heâŚâ Once upon a time, he, too, was abandonedâŚ
Anna swallowed the words and waved her hand. âAnyways, Ju-ang, Iâve come up with an idea. Iâll travel up to Arcadia to enroll in the academy.â
âThe academy⌠Then, Duke Agnus willââ
âItâs fine, for the time being. Believe in me: I will bring him here, upon the name of Anna Bell Grace.â
