âYou seem familiar with who I am,â said Joshua, unconcerned.
âYouâre the most talked-about person in the Empire. If I didnât know that much, Iâd be out of a job.â
That was both good and bad in equal measure. A lot of planning had gone into keeping his arrival secret: his small company was divided into smaller groups before they arrived at Arcadia, and Joshua was prepared to act as a member of Viscount Frederickâs family if anyone asked. Yet, despite his best efforts, this man already knew his identity.
From a clientâs perspective, itâs a warm welcome. It implies that theyâre credible. But, on the other hand, that information could be sold at any time.
Itâs almost certain that someone else knows my whereabouts.
Joshua shook his head. He didnât want this to happen, but it was inevitableâhe just couldnât control all the information on his own.
âI think I know what youâre thinking.â A comfortable smile danced on the manâs normally harsh features. âLet me tell you one thing⊠At this point, the only people who know your true identity are me and a few of my subordinates. Incidentally, no one has yet to approach us for information about the Young Master.â
âCan you just tell me that? It seems like valuable information.â Joshua laughed. âI canât even pay right now because Iâm a powerless punk.â
âYou came without money?â
âIs that a problem?â
âItâs a real pityâŠâ The man scratched his head. âIâm not sure the guy in front of me is really a nine-year-old kid. It feels like youâre an old man whoâs seen it all, yetâŠâ
âIâll take that as a compliment,â said Joshua.
âWell, as I said before, I wonât take any moneyâitâs a token of appreciation for our first meeting.â
âI appreciate it.â
â...I had no intention of even presenting myself, at firstâbut I suppose I should, for the Young Master.â The man stood up from his seat. âMy name is Jero, branch manager of the Moon Gate in Arcadia. It is an honor to meet the future of the Empire.â
âYouâre going to admit youâre the branch manager just like that?â
âThe branch managers are an open secret.â Jero shrugged. âItâs not publicly available information, but itâs not that much of a secret.â
âAnd⊠keeping it a secret hasnât helped me obtain information, so it doesnât seem like a business loss from my point of view.â
Jero sat back down and rubbed his chin.
âThat was a long introduction. So, letâs get down to businessâMay I inquire as to why you approached our organization in this manner?â
âBefore we discuss my objective, Iâd like to ask you a question. Would it be fair to say that this room means youâre only allowed to pass information up to level 3?â
âThat was correct at the time, howeverâŠâ Jero looked deeply into Joshuaâs eyes. âI will supply you with the highest level of information permissible, up to level 1 information.â
â..Why are you giving me so much information on my first time?â
âThe same as previously.â Jero shrugged. âItâs a long term investment. It would be a shame to let you walk away when your genius will soon leave its mark on the Empireâor even the continent at large.â
Joshuaâs eyes narrowed as he listened to Jero. It might be a gamble, but there were no such things as unpaid favors. If he supplied first-rate information, his demands would be monumental to match. All information handled by the Moon Gate was renowned both for its exceptional quality and its outlandish price.
But that doesnât imply I need to reveal my weaknesses right away.
âWith a pseudonym like âJeroâ, I would have thought I could obtain at least Earth-level information. It seems like thatâs not the case, however.â
â... Youâve impressed me once again.â Jeroâs face stiffened. âHow in the world did you know that?â He was starting to think one of his personnel was a mole. Otherwise, an outsider wouldnât know so much about the organizationâs internal affairs.
âYou supply the customers information, no questions askedâwasnât that the Moon Gateâs iron rule?â
Jero grimaced and bowed his head.
â...I apologize for my mistake. Tell me what information you need.â
Joshua chuckled.
âIâm looking for something.â
âAn object? What mightâ?â
âItâs an heirloom from the family of Count Orbis, who were wiped out ten years ago. I want to know who owns the item now.â
âThe Orbis familyâŠâ Jero worked his jaw while he thought. âItâs not difficult. Most of the Orbis familyâs property landed in the black market. If we focus thereâŠâ
Joshua knew it wouldnât be as simple as it appeared. The confidentiality and security of the black market are its primary appeal, such that the public is completely unaware it exists at all. Jero could only be so nonchalant because he worked for the Moon Gate.
âDo you think itâll take a long time?â
âA week is plenty.â
âGood.â Joshuaâs grin widened.
âDo you require any other information?â
Joshua hesitated; his next inquiry was extremely sensitiveâsensitive enough to provoke a reaction from Duke Agnus.
The Moon Gate appears to be a multinational intelligence agency with no national roots on the surface. Iâm not saying anything right now, butâŠÂ Joshua squeezed his eyes shut and grumbled to himself. ⊠thereâs no such thing as a well-kept secret.
If what I know reaches someoneâs ears, it could cause a lot of problems. Joshua unconsciously drummed his fingers against the table. It would be good to start by just observing to not draw suspicion. Iâll just say I know nothing if anyone presses me.
If his plan worked, he could get two birds with one stone.
âMay the moon bless whoever discovers the red coin buried in the Raulf Riverââ
âHey, whatâHow did you know?â
âYou donât ask customers for personal informationââ
âThis is completely different! Only a few people in our company know that myth! What is your real identity!?â
âWhoever seeks the Moon Gate will find it, am I right? Well, not for an outsider like me. But it is what youâre looking for right now?
Joshua raised three fingers.
âThree years. Three years, and Iâll find it. There are, of course, conditions.â
â...Are you certain?â
âDidnât you say I was a long-term investment?â Joshua smiled. âBelieve me or not, I will find it.â
Jero pondered for a brief moment before slowly opening his mouth.
â...To be honest, the successorâs competition finished a year ago. Itâs an item that no longer needs finding.â
I thought the succession battle would be drawing to a close around this time, but I didnât expect it to already be over. Maybe it was only naturalâthe new leader of the Moon Gate possesses such incredible talents, after all.
â...But. That mark is a symbolic object that our organization has sought for decades. Perhaps âheâ is eager to find it too.â Jeroâs eyes glittered. âLetâs start with your conditions, then we can judge the value of the investment.â
âGreat. My conditions are simple: from now on, you will never disclose the information Iâm about to ask for to anyone. Thatâs my condition.â
âOur organization never sells customer informationââ Jero clapped his mouth shut when Joshua shot him a baleful stare. âYou donât think Iâm telling the truth?â
âI donât trust anyone.â
âBut why?â
âArenât you doing this as an investment? Iâd like to make an investment as well.â
â... Iâve worked for the organization for decades, but Iâve never met anyone like the Young Master.â Jero shook his head helplessly. âSo, what is your request?â
âDraxia Bell Grace.â
âDraxia Bell Graceâ!â Jero leapt up from his seat, staring at Joshua with wide, terrified eyes. âDraxia Bell Grace, the War God!â
