The promised dinner was held in a room a short distance from the banquet hall, a place reserved solely for the blood of the Agnus family.
Joshua approached the door and pulled it open before the old butler had a chance to say anything.
âYo-Young Master Joshua!â
Joshua was too occupied to hear the old butler. The first thing he saw through the open door was a middle-aged beauty with piercing eyes and arched brows. And next to her:
âMotherââ
âJoshua?â Lucia was startled by Joshuaâs sudden appearance. Vanessa, at the tableâs head, and Chiffon, next to her, didnât seem bothered.
âYouâre Joshua, right? Is this the first time youâve seen something like this?â Vanessa greeted him with a grin, but Joshua didnât reply.
âYoung Master Joshua, you stand before the lady of the Agnus family. Be courteous.â Chiffon scowled at him.
Still, Joshua remained silent.
âYoung Master Joshua!â Chiffon exclaimed.
Joshuaâs eyes snapped onto Chiffon for a moment, and his body quaked with shivers.
What kind of eyes does that boy have? Chiffonâs throat quivered. Before those eyes, all pretensions of etiquette were blown away; nothing was left but primordial instinct.
âShouldnât you say your greetings, Joshua?â Lucia looked him up and down with a worried expression.
Joshua groaned.
âI am Joshua von Agnus. I greet the Duchess.â
Vanessa twitched. Was he disrespectful? No. She was bothered by the way he used the name âAgnusâ. However, the Duchess recovered quickly.
âI heard youâre departing for the capital shortly. I was a little worried since I feel like Iâve never properly gotten to know you.â
ââArcadia? Are you talking about Arcadia, Duchess?â Luciaâs eyes flew wide open.
âJust call me âSisterâ,â Vanessa said.
âOh my God, how dare Iââ Lucia stuttered with a confused expression. Both were Duke Agnusâs mistresses, but their standings were as different as heaven and earth. Vanessa, descended from the noblest blood in the Avalon Empire, and Lucia, nothing more than a maid; in any other situation, it would be unthinkable to even look each other in the eye.
Vanessaâs demeanor made Lucia feel ashamed. Sheâd never treated Lucia so well before.
âYou havenât heard anything yet?â
âYes?â
âThe Duke said heâd take my younger sister1Â and Joshua with him when he returned to the capital.â
âAh, what exactly do you mean?â
âJoshua is a Knight.â Chiffon stepped up to fill in the holes.
Lucia stared blankly at Joshua.
âThis is a sore spot for me, because it looks like I never invited anyone to dinner⊠Donât you think Iâd be such a jerk to leave you like this?â Vanessa grinned.
âMy, Duchess, donât say that.â
âYou called me that again.â Vanessa furrowed her brows.
âSister⊠sister.â
âPlease accept my apologies for neglecting you. If there is any lingering ill will, it is my wish that those feelings be laid to rest.â
âThere are no grudges! Youâve been so gracious to extend this hospitality to us!â
âThank you!â Vanessa clapped her hands together with a bright smile. âPlease prepare the table as soon as possible.â
The door opened, and platters poured in one by one.
âIs your seat uncomfortable?â Vanessa asked Joshua. â You havenât looked this nice in a long time.â
âItâs quite inconvenient.â
Vanessa was puzzled by Joshua's immediate answer.
âYoung Master Joshua!â Chiffon couldnât hold it in any longer.
âDo you want to die?â
Chiffon flinched like heâd been bitten. His hand instinctively dropped to his belt.
This! His cheeks flushed. The implications of being chastised by this youngsterâ!
âYou disgracefulâŠ!â
Alarm bells rang in Chiffonâs head as the energy around Joshuaâs body thickened. Chiffon prepared to draw his sword.
Swordsmanship isnât something you acquire just by growing up. Only the talented can learn it. SoâŠ
Cold sweat trickled down Chiffonâs back like he was facing down a B-Class Knight.
Joshua seemed completely centered, like the emotions of other people meant nothing to him. It seemed as if he was in control of his life, somehow.
âSeeing as youâre ready to draw your blade, it appears Sir Chiffon has a short temperââ
âJoshua!â
Joshua ground to a halt when he realized who was there. Chiffon let out a long breath like heâd been scrubbed clean. Vanessa grimaced, and Lucia looked annoyed.
If theyâd been left aloneâŠ
âStop it, Sir Chiffon,â said the Duchess.
âWhat impoliteness is this, Joshua?â said Lucia.
âSir Chiffon, may we speak for a moment?â Vanessa locked eyes with Chiffon.
âI understand, Your Highness.â
Vanessa rose gently and turned to Lucia.
âWait for just a moment,â said the hostess. âYou can eat first.â
âAhâŠâ Lucia didnât have time to reply before they walked out the door.
âJoshua, whatâs the matter with you? What do they mean when they say youâre going to the capital? What about becoming a knightâ?â
âIâm sorry.â
Lucia came to an abrupt halt when she saw the genuine remorse on Joshuaâs face.
âShould I wait until later to hear what happened?â
âOkay.â
âAll rightââ
âHowever.â
Lucia cocked her head curiously.
âFor the time being, I hope youâll trust me.â
âJoshua?â Lucia was confused by Joshuaâs stern expression.
His eyes were more frigid than theyâd ever been.
Vanessa turned around once sheâd gone some distance from the dining room.
âSir Chiffon, what are we going to do?â
âThatââ
âStop blaming others.â
âMy apologies.â Chiffon bowed.
âIâm not sure why youâre acting so cruelly, Sir Chiffon.â Vanessa glared at him with poisonous eyes. âYouâre fighting a small child.â
I remember the first time I saw that boy. From the depths of his heart, rage swelled. Animosity, without reason. He didnât understand that emotion until now. Isnât this envy?
I donât want to admit it, but I couldnât help myself. Damn it. Chiffon chewed his lip. An unbelievable talent, superior to his beloved master, and a profound sense of dignity that draws people in.
âDonât be influenced by irrational feelings,â the Duchess said. âIf you wanted to see good things, you may be out of luck.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âThose things just arrived yesterday,â replied the Duchess.
Chiffon stared wide-eyed at her.
âGariâ was a well-known poison among the knights. It was a pure white powder that was nearly tasteless and odorless, even to the highly developed senses of knights.
Gari might work.
âEven for a mere best, the last road is a comfortable one,â Vanessa said as she made her way slowly back to the dining room. âKnight? Arcadia? Itâs not even funny. I donât think a bug could be better than him.â
Vanessaâs smile was as cold as ice.
âThis time, donât make a mistake.â
âHave you been waiting for us⊠Was I holding you back? Iâm ashamed weââ
âItâs just so cozy!â
Vanessa flashed a bright smile at Luciaâs reply before looking at Joshua.
âI offered Sir Chiffon some harsh advice; I hope youâre satisfied by it as well.â
Vanessa sat down and examined the food set on the table. Peculiarly, extra food was placed in front of Lucia and JoshuaâVanessa's intentions were, of course, hidden within.
âSister Lucia, I hope your seats arenât bothering you or your child?â
âNot at all! Weâre fine.â Lucia spoke loudly, as if unsure of herself.
âIâm thrilled!â Vanessa smiled. âThank god. I was afraid my sister would despise me.â
âThatâs impossible,â said Lucia. She leapt to her feet like a frightened rabbit.
âIâm serious.â Vanessa covered her mouth bashfully. âI want to get to know my younger sister a little better.â
Although I wasnât criticized openly, I had to sleep with one eye open for years. Lucia was greatly moved. It was only natural she would feel reassured by the first warm words offered to her.
âShall we eat, then?â
Lucia nodded brightly.
âThenââ
âWait.â The voice filled the dining room, instantly capturing the guestsâ attention.
Joshuaâs lips curled into a tiny smile.
âBefore we eat, Iâd like to express my regret. I had no idea there was a deeper meaning, and I was oversensitive.â He rose from his seat and bowed. âPlease accept my heartfelt apologies.â
âAll is well.â Vanessa seemed perplexed but smiled and nodded. Lucia, too, was smiling.
âIt appears my young mind has accumulated useless poisons,â Joshua continued. âI donât think my elder mother thinks like I do. If weâd known ahead of time, we would have prepared something ourselvesââ
âItâs not too late.â
Joshua grinned widely at Vanessaâs reply.
âI appreciate you saying that, but you reached out firstââ Joshua pointed at the table. âI canât accept this kind of treatment from you.â
âHey, Joshua, what do you mean?â Lucia shifted uncomfortably.
âMother, it appears my elder mother is overly concerned about us. She only receives a small portion of the food, while we have so much.â
âAh!â
Indeed, delicacies were piled high in front of them. Vanessaâs cheeks flushed with unease as Joshua continued to push her.
Joshua drew an angelic smile on his lips as he pressed the attack home.
âElder mother, I hope we can all enjoy our last dinner together.â
For the first time, Vanessaâs perfect smile cracked.
