Although there were less than two hundred Wilhelm Knights, each one of them was an elite knight of at least B-Class. When they were free from their shackles, they moved like fish in the water.
âArgghhhh! My arm!â
âDo-donât kill meâŚ!â
Peopleâs screams and the horrifying sound of human flesh being torn and cut filled the air. The Wilhelm Knights swung their swords without mercy, letting out their pent-up anger. They showed a certain someone that they hadnât been idle.
Their battle turned into a one-sided massacre.
âPleaseâŚâ A man grabbed the pants of a Willhelm Knight as he was running amok. A cross was clearly engraved on the chest plate of the manâs armor, so the Wilhelm Knight realized that the man was the knight of the Hubalt Empire.
âSave me, pleaseâŚâ the Hubalt knight moaned.
ââŚHavenât you heard that often?â the Wilhelm Knight asked.
âWh-what do you meanâŚ?â
The Wilhelm Knight narrowed his eyes. âThe children beyond that wall must have said the same thing.â
The Hubalt knightâs eyes widened. Then as if he had given up, his eyes lost their spark.
âI just⌠followed ordersâŚâ
âThat is why you should die,â the Wilhelm Knight coldly muttered.
And then he cut off the Hubalt knightâs head right off.
Blood sprayed out from the headless corpse like a fountain. The Wilhelm Knight, Atoba, didnât move and let the scarlet blood splash all over him. Atoba wasnât the only Wilhelm Knight that did that, however; they knew there was no such thing as legitimate murder.
Some followed their superiorsâ orders, and some killed for pleasure. They also killed someone else to protect someone or something that was dear to them, but nothing could justify murder. The important thing wasâŚ
âThere is no need to hesitate, but I shouldnât get used to murder. If I can finish something without killing someone, then I should because Iâll have to live with the lives I take for the rest of my life.â
Atoba put mana into his voice.
âDonât let someone who isnât involved in the arena get caught in our fight! Send the children to the west gate and the spectators to the north gate! Block the east and south!â
Kingaitu saw what Atoba was doing from afar and turned to Joshua.
âIs that okay?â he nervously asked.
Joshua gave him a confused look.
âYes, itâs right to evacuate the children to a safe place, but as for the spectatorsâŚ?.â Kingaitu trailed off, and Joshua finally understood what Kingaitu meant. âThis was only supplied because there was a demand for it. They could be considered bystanders, but I think theyâre worse in some ways.â
âThen are you suggesting we kill them too?â Joshua quietly asked.
ââŚPardon?â Kingaitu blankly said.
âDo you think the other Wilhelm Knightsâ hearts would be at peace if we did that?â Joshua prompted him.
âThatâsâŚâ Kingaitu couldnât continue. How could he say anything more when Joshua said that? The Wilhelm Knightâs respectable king was worrying more about the Wilhelm Knights than about those bystanders.
âWas his name⌠Atoba?â Joshua asked.
âDo you remember him?â Kingaitu hadnât expected Joshua to remember Atobaâs name, but he quickly leaped to elaborate. âHeâs twenty-nine years old just like most other Willhelm Knights, but itâs actually safe to say that heâs the strongest after me.â
Kingaitu was basically the commander of the Wilhelm Knights, so if he assessed Atoba as the strongest knight after himself, then Atoba was talented enough to be the vice-commander of an ordinary knight order.
Kingaitu flinched. A group of men was pouring in from the north gate of the colosseum, shoving their way through the spectators as they tried to flee.
âMove!â
âHow dare you stop the Grand Hurent Knight Order?! Do you want to die?â
Kingaitu heard the shouts and jumped.
âThe Hurent Knight Order!â he exclaimed.
âDo you know them?â Joshua inquired.
âTheyâre⌠part of the Hubalt Empireâs main unit, which practically rules Reinhardt right now. On top of that, theyâre the Martial Emperorâs direct subordinatesâŚâ
The more Kingaitu explained, the colder Joshuaâs eyes became.
It seemed that at least five hundred knights were entering the colosseum. The other Wilhelm Knights had already stopped what they were doing and turned to look at the Hurent Knights.
The Hurent Knights were indeed one of the Empireâs most elite knights, so even the Wilhelm Knights tensed up once the Hurent showed up. The Wilhelm Knights couldnât be sure they would be able to win even if they fought in normal conditions, but they had gotten most of the weapons they were holding from the other Hubalt knights and theyâd been starved for a long time, decreasing their staminaâŚ
âDonât lose your courage!â Kingaitu shouted at the top of his lungs. âWe are the proud Wilhelm Knights! On top of that, our king is with us now!â
Kingaituâs last words boosted the Wilhelm Knightâs flagging morale. Merely the fact that Joshua was here made the Wilhelm Knights feel like a million soldiers were backing them up.
âYeah, I think I can deal with them alone,â Joshua said as he stepped forward, affirming their expectations.
A ray of light suddenly cut through the empty sky.
âThatâsâŚ!â Kingaituâs eyes widened. His king held a four-meter-long light with a shape that Kingaitu was quite familiar with.
âThatâs definitely the one from that timeâŚâ Kingaitu dumbfoundedly mumbled.
Joshua moved without hesitation with his weapon held tightly in hand. The Wilhelm Knight that had stopped moving, the Hurent Knights that had just entered the colosseum⌠Everyone paid attention to Joshua. In spite of the mask he still wore, the enormous light that Joshua held looked extraordinary. It was mesmerizing.
Joshua sprang forward just like he had in the Mastersâ Battle which had taken place here in Reinhardt. Announcing his return, the long, blindingly bright light showered the entire colosseum with brilliant white sparks.
Joshua stretched out his arm, pointing his spear at the cluster of Hurent Knights.
ââŚScathachâs Fury.â
The light of death that didnât allow the enemies to escape. The glow of despair. One of the highest level skills of the Magic Spear Art.
The Hurent knights had no time to respond.
âFu-fuck!â
Something flashed, and the white light drowned out heaven and earth.
A second later, the colosseum was rattled by an ear-splitting boom.
* * *
A knight hurriedly ran through the open door into the chamber of the Reinhardtâs regent.
âYo-Your Excellency!â he yelled.
âWhatâs all the ruckus?â the Hurent Knightsâ commander asked with a frown on the Martial Emperorâs behalf.
âThe enemy has launched a surprise attack!â the knight reported.
The Martial Emperorâs eyes widened.
âAn ambush?â the commander repeated.
âThe colosseum has been invaded,â the knight informed him. âThe other knights already went there!â
The commanderâs eyes narrowed.
âExplain it clearly. What do you mean, enemies?â
âThere is no time, commander! The knights that were protecting the colosseum have already been wiped out, and the other knights are also in dangerâ!â
The commander slammed the wall in frustration.
âAre there at least hundreds of enemies or something? But then how could no one have noticed when hundreds of enemy soldiers were at our doorstep?!â
âActually, I donât know all the details yetâŚâ The knight looked at the floor.
âYou fool! Lead the way, Iâll go there myself!â the commander angrily shouted. He immediately turned back to bow to the Martial Emperor. ââŚI apologize, Your Excellency. Iâll look into the matter quickly.â
ââŚWait.â The Martial Emperor quietly raised his hand. His eyes were shining. âIt looks like you still have more to report⌠Am I wrong?â
ââŚWellâŚâ The knight trailed off reluctantly.
âItâs fine, so talk.â The Martial Emperor narrowed his eyes.
The knight hesitated for a moment.
âItâs not reliable, but⌠according to the eye-witness accounts⌠there are only two intruders⌠aside from the Wilhelm Knights who were set freeâŚâ
âWhy are you keep talking nonsense!â the commander furiously shouted.
In contrast to the commander, the Martial Emperorâs eyes were colder than ever.
ââŚAnd?â the Martial Emperor pressed.
âYo-Your Excellency.â The knight took a step back.
âI said it was fine.â
âUmm⌠The intruders were wearing masks, so we werenât able to identify their facesâŚâ the knight reluctantly continued.
âBut?â the Martial Emperor said.
âOne of the two created some kind of long light⌠but it looked like a spear....â

ââŚA spear!â The commanderâs eyes widened, bewildered. He would be lying if he couldnât think of anyone when the word âspearâ came up at a time like this.
âJoshua SandersâŚâ The Martial Emperor groaned and stood up as if heâd been expecting this surprise attack. âTell the knights.â
âYou-Your Excellency?â the commander stuttered.
âIâll go there myself.â
The commander and the knight both looked at the Martial Emperor disbelievingly.
âTell them to brace themselves. Itâs highly likely that someone new is gaining supremacy of this continent today,â the Martial Emperor declared with quiet determination.
