Even after their conversation had ended, Tremblin was lost in his thoughts for a long time, but it wasnât because Joshuaâs story was suspicious. Out of all the hypotheses that Tremblin had heard until now, the story that he had just heard was the most trustworthy since Joshua would have been more than capable of breaking through the ten thousand strong blockade of soldiers.
âI know you have a lot of questions,â Joshua said.
Tremblin broke away from his thoughts and raised his head.
âIâll tell you everything I knowâno, youâll eventually find out even if I donât. Of course, only if you trust me on this matter.â
âAre you okay?â Tremblin finally asked.
âPardon?â Joshua tilted his head in confusion.
âEverything else aside, heâs your father,â Tremblin cautiously said. âAccording to the story that you told me just now, one of the hidden masterminds behind everything is himââ
âIt doesnât matter,â Joshua replied before Tremblin had a chance to finish. âIf youâre talking about my love for my family, you donât have to worry about me.â
ââŠDo you, as an illegitimate son, still resent your father?â Tremblin asked.
âNo, I donât.â Joshua firmly shook his head.
Tremblin tilted his head. âThenâŠ?â
âI have a dream,â Joshua said with a small smile.
âA dream?â Tremblin repeated.
âIâve sworn that Iâll become the Emperor and never lose my dear ones again,â Joshua said.
Tremblinâs emotions became muddled as he remembered something.
ââŠFor that goal, youâre even going to fight the Dark God?â
âYes, I am.â Joshua nodded.
Tremblin shook his head. âYou had your heart set on it from the beginning. You were serious when you said you were going to become the Emperor of the Avalon EmpireâŠâ
âMy colleagues waited for me until now because they trust me, and theyâre dearer to me than my blood kin,â Joshua answered.
Tremblinâs eyes turned sharp. âIs that the only reason?â
âDo I need more reasons?â Joshua shrugged.
âYour position defines you. I donât trust the part where you said that all of this is just for your colleagues. Joshua of the Sanders Family, which is nominally a noble family, and Joshua, the great Emperor of Avalon, are bound to have different mindsets.â
âYou say you donât trust meâŠâ Joshua said with a smile, âbut you began to treat me differently at some point.â
Tremblinâs eyes lost focus. Joshua was rightâregardless of the fact Joshua was an illegitimate son or how young he was, he was the son of the Duke, so Tremblin had treated Joshua like a child until now. However, Joshua pointed out a fact that even Tremblin wasnât aware of.
âBut⊠thatâs not the important part. The point is that youâll definitely change after you become an emperor.â Tremblin examined Joshua. âThere were a myriad of nobles who wanted the throne, but only oneâeven if I delve deep into historyâactually got the throne. After they became the Emperor, they changed. It was as if they became a totally different person in every way.â
Only Tremblin, who had served three emperors, could say such a thing.
âBut stillâŠâ he bitterly continued.
âLike His Majesty Marcus ben Britten, our current emperor?â Joshua asked.
Tremblin shut his mouth.
âHe must have hidden his claws to survive, so people didnât even mention him while they talked about who would inherit the throne. At the right moment, he revealed his hidden claws.â
âYou mean he had been hiding his true nature, rather than changing?â Tremblin realized.
âPeopleâs natures donât change easily,â Joshua said with a shrug.
âYouâre saying youâre different from them?â
It wasnât Joshua who answeredâthe people standing beside him immediately replied.
âOur master is different!â Cain growled.
âOur master is far different from them!â Icarus shouted.
âHow can you compare such a lunatic with our master!â Cain huffed and puffed with a reddened face.
âWatch your mouth!â Icarus immediately snapped at Cain. She had remained relatively calm, unlike him. âHeâs still the Emperorââ
âWell, he diâno, he passed away, didnât he? Everyone is the same once they die,â Cain answered, perplexed.
However, Icarus still looked cold.
âYouâre badmouthing the deceased,â she scolded.
Tremblin was starting to feel dumbstruck as he quietly watched the conversation between the two.
âYou said your position defines you, right?â Joshua asked.
Tremblin turned back to Joshua.
ââŠAre you going to tell me Iâm wrong on that too?â he muttered.
âYes, because I disagree. People are the ones who define their positions. Although itâs said that a god chose our emperor, it was his fellow people who had made the emperorâs throne, so those people can always change who sits on the throne.â
Only Joshua, out of all the people in the world, could give such an answer. It cause Tremblin to tremble uncharacteristically.
âCan you really remain honest to those words?â
âOf course.â Joshua nodded.
âYouâre defying god's will. How can you say anyone can commit treason that easilyâŠ?â Tremblin shook his head.
âHistory says so, and if I really become the emperor, then itâll be godâs will,â Joshua replied.
âAre you treating an emperor and an ordinary citizen the same?â
âThere is no empire without those âordinaryâ citizens,â Joshua reminded him.
âYou may not know this, but the other nobles will not think so,â Tremblin warned Joshua. âIf they find out that you think that way, then theyâll definitely not sit on their hands.â
Joshuaâs eyes sparkled for a moment.
âIf they donât sit on their hands⊠Iâll have to turn everything upside down. â
Tremblinâs mouth clamped shut. The waiting room turned totally silentâCain and Icarus were also stupefied by Joshuaâs shocking remark.
The Duke looked at Joshua for a long moment without saying anything.
ââŠIt was good talking with you,â he finally said, turning away. âCan I answer you after the knightsâ battle comes to an end?â
âThat meansâŠ?â
âI think I at least have the right to test the candidateâs abilityâŠâ Tremblin trailed off.
Realizing what Tremblin meant, Joshua smiled lightly.
âOf course.â
ââŠI look forward to seeing what happens soon.â Tremblin turned away from Joshua and exited the room, leaving the wide waiting room empty except for the three people left inside.
âMaster, so all we have to do right now is to wrap up our business, donât we?â Cain asked.
âOur business?â Joshua looked confused.
âYou value your colleagues that much, but Iâm not sure why you were nowhere to be seen over the past three years,â Cain said with a bite to his words.
Icarus quickly poked Cainâs waist. âWhatâs wrong with you now?â
âI feel so angry now that I think about it!â Cain shouted.
âHe must have his reasons,â Icarus said in an attempt to calm him down.
âI mean, I have to hear his reasons,â Cain enunciated.
âHe said heâll tell us over time. Besides,â Icarus pouted, âyou can already guess whyââ
âStop, because I really need to hear an answer to this question right now.â Cain looked determined. âMaster, are you okay with that?â
It was obvious that Cain was going to ask something serious, so Joshua slowly nodded.
âGo on; you have more than enough right to do so.â
Cain bit his lower lip.
âIâll still ask it even if you say such things,â he solemnly replied.
âYes.â Joshua nodded again. âDo it.â
âThis is the question that I want the answer to the most, so I really want you to be honest with me on this one,â Cain emphasized.
Joshua chuckled. âAlright.â
âThen⊠Iâll ask⊠By any chance⊠are youâŠâ Cain hesitated.
âWhat in the world are you trying to askâŠ?â Icarus asked as Cainâs silence stretched for an unnervingly long time.
âMarried?â Cain blurted.
âHuh?â Icarus gaped, dumbfounded.
âNo, do you have a lover?â Cain narrowed his eyes.
Icarus continued to stare, slack-jawed, unable to process Cainâs words.
âOn a side note, I still donât have one yet.â
âYouâŠâ Icarus finally pulled herself together and scowled like a devil that had climbed up from hell. âYou idiot!â
Icarusâs hand whipped into Cainâs back with a loud Smack!
* * *
There was a building that only the Imperial Knights could use, but only the Knight-Commander could use the office on the third floor.
âCommander, itâs Joker.â Joker, the Captain of the First Battalion, knocked on the door.
âCome in,â Knight-Commander Rod replied.
Joker opened the door without hesitation, looked around the inside of the room, and flinched.
ââŠI see you have another visitor. CazesâŠâ
âI greet the First Battalion Commander.â Cazes, who had come before Joker, stood up and bowed gently.
âAre you done with your business?â Joker asked.
Cazes shrugged. âIâve just arrived.â
âThen excuse me. Iâm in a hurry.â Joker immediately gestured outside of the room with his eyes, silently ordering Cazes to get out of the office.
âNo need,â Rod said, shaking his head.
ââŠPardon?â Joker asked.
âI happened to need both of your opinions.â
Cazes and Joker both gave him a curious look.
âI received a message,â Rod said.
âBy a message, you meanâŠ?â Joker narrowed his eyes.
âItâs from Joshua Sanders.â Rod pulled out a neatly-folded piece of paper from his pocket. âHe gave this to me as a gift before he got off the colosseum stage.â
âWhat does it say?â Cazes asked.
âIf I summarize itâŠâ Rod glanced at Cazes. âHe has been exonerated, so he wishes to be reinstated.â
Find the original at bit.ly/3iBfjkV.
âHuh?â Joker snorted dismissively. âWe postponed bringing the charge against him due to the situation, we didnât exonerate him.â
âThe problem is that people donât think that way.â Rod shrugged.
âWhy does that matter? Wait, youâre not seriously believing the nonsense about how he has the blood of the Imperial Family, are you, Commander?â Joker took a step back in surprise.
The words âblood of the Imperial Familyâ made Rod stiffen.
âHe doesnât have the right in the first place since heâs just a fugitive who abandoned the Empire. So how can he talk about reinstatement? If youâre asking for my opinion, my answer is definitely no!â Joker shouted.
âButâŠâ
âCommander, think carefully about this. Since His Majesty is missing right now, youâre the one with the right to reprimand the Imperial Knights. That must be why he sent you such a message.â Joker clicked his tongue. âIsnât his plan obvious? Heâs trying to play hero in the group battle and earn the support of the Empire's unwitting citizens.â
âOf course, he canât do it on his own,â Rod answered. Jokerâs face immediately brightened up. âEven if he has the Imperial blood, the group battle is a different matter.â
âWhich meansâŠâ Joker mumbled.
âThere are precedents where a member of the Imperial Family became an Imperial Knights, butâŠâ Rod trailed off for a moment, then he said, âBercheâs Blood Battle is a sacred battle of life and death, so how would it look if hundreds of Imperial Knights pointed their swords at a member of the Imperial Family? All the people on the continent would laugh at us.â
âExactly!â Joker merrily shouted.
âThatâs why I also summoned Cazes.â Rod pointed at the man in question.
ââŠWhat? What are youâŠ?â Joker gaped dumbly at the Knight-Commander, wondering what happened that had made Cazes and Rod get along so well..
âCazes,â Rod called, turning to the knight.
âYes, Commander,â Cazes said, nodding.
âWhat do you think?â Rod asked.
âIâŠâ Cazes pondered for a moment before strongly continuing, âYou and Captain Joker mean to say that you canât make an exception with Joshua Sanders.â
âThatâs it!â Joker loudly clapped. âCazes, you and I seem to be on the same wavelength, unexpectedly!â
âI have an idea,â Cazes said.
ââŠWhat?â Jokerâs eyes widened.
âAn idea?â Rod looked intrigued. âShall we hear it?â
âBercheâs Bloody Battle isnât over yet,â Cazes said with a shrug.
His reply sounded very random, but it wasnât so random that the veteran Rod couldnât understand.
âAs long as youâre a citizen of the Avalon Empire, everyone has the chance to become an Imperial Knight. This isnât about making an exception since this rule already exists. That was how the knights of my battalion, who had been mercenaries, became Imperial Knights,â Cazes reminded them.
Jokerâs eyes popped open as he finally realized what Cazes intended.
âWhy are you bringing up such nonsense right now?â he demanded. âWhy would you bring up that rule?â
Cazes paid no mind to Jokerâs anger.
âA contender usually has to go through the entire tournament from the start, but⊠this contender is the great Superhuman known as the âHero Kingâ. Out of respect to such a man, I myself will go up against him as the current Captain of the Auxiliary Battalion.â
Joker gave him a wide-eyed look, thrown off by Cazesâs totally unexpected proposition.
âIf I am defeated, the position of the Auxiliary Battalion Captain is his in accordance with the old rules of the Bloody Battle. Heâs newly acquiring the position, not being reinstated, so I donât think there is a problem.â
Rodâs eyes sparkled subtly as he quietly listened, a faint smile sneaking onto his lips.
âNo matter who youâre going up against, youâre going to lead the Eleventh and Twelfth Battalions and participate in the group battle as the new Captain of the Auxiliary Battalion?â he asked.
âThatâs right.â Cazes nodded.
âAre you speaking for all the knights of the Auxiliary Battalion?â Rod asked.
Cazes, however, had already expected the question. That was why he had already asked for the knightsâ opinions, so he could answer with certainty⊠And he knew that no one in the Auxiliary Battalion opposed his idea.
Cazes readily nodded, with a little grin dancing on his lips.
