TL/N: For those of you who want to visualize what Dyurahan and Lichi looked like, watch Kono-suba⊠I just realized that right now hehe~
âLetâs use the warp gate.â
The clear, flowing voice stopped Cain and Icarus in their tracks. They looked at each other.
âDo you have money?â Icarus whispered.
Cain shrugged. âDo I look like someone with money?â he whispered back.
âWhat did you do with your salary back then?â
âYou got your salary?â
Icarus tilted her head. Now that she thought about it, she couldnât remember getting paid. She just didnât realize it because Joshua handed her a giant bag of money. The truth was, none of that money went to Joshuaâs vassals.
âWow. Our master is a scammer after all,â Cain bemoaned.
âWeâre basically homeless and penniless right now. We really need the family to protect our rightsâŠâ
âYouâre stating the obvious.â
âSo, you donât have any personal savings?â
âNo, nothing at all. I didnât think Iâd ever need the money.â
âI had my hopes up, but I really donât think youâre ever going to get married now.â
âWhat are you on about?!â
âWho wants to marry a man with no money these days?â
âIf I set my mind to it, Iâll have no problem making money! Is that all women are interested in?â
âYeah, yeah⊠Keep telling yourself that.â
While Cain and Icarusâs voices continued to mount, Iceline stared at them from beneath the hem of her robe.
âEven if I donât have money, Iâll still get married before you.â Cain looked pointedly at her body.
âWhat are you trying to say, you old bachelor?â
âE-Excuse me?â
âNow that I think about it, you should be the âSolo Knight,â not the âFirst Knight.â Add âincel[^n1]â in there while weâre at it, you creep.â
âAs if you have any experience!â
âItâs not that I canât, itâs that I donât want to. If I set my mind toââ
âOh, where have I heard that before?â
Icarus glared at Cain with killer eyes. âOld man.â
âPoor.â
âIgnorant.â
âStupid.â
ââIâve never held a womanâs hand in my life.ââ
âForever alone, unidentifiable gender.â
âUgh!â Icarusâs face was red with anger.
Cain stuck his chin up and shrugged. It felt like heâd won in some strange way.
âEven an emergency fund would be nice.â
âAs you command.â Cain looked down and pulled a small leather pocket from his waist.
âYou said you had no money!â
âEvery man has his secrets.â
âTrue.â Icarus wore a wide smile on her face, despite her anger moments ago. It made Cain inexplicably nervous[^n2].
âThis money will be very useful for the family.â Icarus suddenly produced an even bigger leather pouch and stuffed both wallets into a fist-sized pocket.
Cainâs jaw dropped. âIs that a subspace artifact?â
âAs the saying goes, the more, the merrier. We canât see the future, so we have to save up as much money as possible. You understand that, right? Iâm so glad youâre willing to sacrifice yourself for the cause.â
âŠLooks like I need to give Icarus another name.
âStingy.â
âCall it a womanâs touch.â
Cain clenched his fists in frustration.
âHeyâŠâ Icelineâs charming voice broke their standoff. She smiled at them. âI have a lot of money.â
âHuh?â
âEh?â
âI think we should be focusing on getting to Arcadia as soon as possible, donât you?â
Their response was a silence stiff enough to cut with a knife.
There wasnât a reason for them to argue in the first placeâafter the payoff from Icelineâs bets in Reinhardt, she had enough money to live like a queen for three generations.
Real masters donât advertise their presence.
âCaptain!â
The 400 knights of the 11th and 12th Battalions were waiting for Joshua.
âCongratulations on achieving your goals!â
âI was so surprised. I canât believe you would say something like that in front of the proud central noblesâŠâ Just thinking about it made Viper trail off. Cazes and Ranger were tearing up.
âWhat do we do? No one chose to stand with us, the idiots.â
âWhoâs this boy?â Ranger peered at Ash.
âOh, donât worry about him,â Joshua replied. âMore importantly, I think I owe you an apology first.â He bowed deeply.
âS-Sir! What are you doing?â
âIâm sorry for making such a decision without discussing it with anyone. For you, it must have come out of the blue.â
âThatâs not what we were thinking!â Ranger protested. âHey, whoâs thinking like that?!â The big knight glared at the others.
âIs that a threat?â Joshua shook his head. âIt was a unilateral decision by your ignorant commander. If you donât agree with my choices, I will help you transfer to another battalion peacefully.â
âIn that case, Iâll help as well.â
âSir ValmontâŠ?â Viper gaped.
Valmont dun Brown, captain of the much more prestigious 3rd Battalion, waved at them from atop the roof.
âI owe your master quite a debt, so Iâll give you a hand. Iâm sure you wonât believe me, but my only request is another spar. How about it?â
Joshua nodded, drawing a chuckle from Valmont.
âGreat.â
And that was that. Any worries they had were groundless.
âAnd if we stay?â
âWeâll follow you until the day we die! Even if you tell us to get lost.â
âAre you sure you arenât going to throw us away because weâre out?â Ranger couldnât suppress his smile.
âThe Captain is our hero!â
âWhat a breath of fresh air!â
âThe captains of the top battalions shouldâve seen the dumb looks on their faces!â
âAn order independent of the Imperial Knights? The other battalions are gonna die of stomach aches!â
The knights stuck their thumbs up, making Viper and Cazes laugh. All of them were in agreement.
âNo one wants to leave, Captain,â Ranger informed Joshua.
Joshua was silent.
âAh, is five years too long or too short? That was how long it took you to make your men obedient. Now it feels like gold wouldnât even make them blink,â Valmont admired as he stood up. âLooks like you donât have any problems. Enjoy your battles with your own people now.â
Joshua mulled over Valmontâs words once he was gone. Valmont had come for a reason, but he picked this moment in particular.
ââŠNow that everyone knows,â Viper ventured, âI have a question⊠What kind of knights did you have in mind, Captain?â
Instantly, the knights fell silent.
âPerhaps you havenât come up with a name yet?â
âRanger.â Cazes frowned.
Ranger smiled brightly. âDoes it matter what the name is? Just call us the Knights of Ranger! Donât rush, but donât take it for granted eitherâI mean, take your time but put some thought into it!â
That was the crux of the issue. Whether they liked it or not, their order was real. From the point of view of the 11th and 12th Battalions, this felt like ditching a stable job for a very uncertain one.
âNo, Iâve already thought this through.â
Joshua would never put over two hundred knights in an uncertain position on a whim. Heâd been thinking about his own order of knights for a long time now.
Swallow has their Wyvern Knights, and Avalon has the First Sky Knightâs Order.
He felt excitement welling up when he saw the heat in the knightsâ eyes.
Heâd made another deal with Crevasse, one that was quite handy. There was nothing more effective at taming wild animals than the threat of a dragon.
âIâm really sorry, but I canât say more right now. Will you still follow me, nonetheless?â
âBut Captain, we asked you about the name of our order,â Ranger apologetically pressed him.
âThe name?â Joshua slowly met eyes with each knight. âCrevasse, Frozen Nightmare of Earth.â
The newborn Crevasse Knights would be famous in the not-so-distant future for slicing through the wide expanses of the heavens.
