In a calm woods not far from Reinhardt was a man whoâd experienced defeat for the first time in his life. Theta was meandering through the trees wearing a little grin as he reminisced over the last dayâs events.
âThey say⌠thereâs always a sky above the sky⌠by that logic, thereâs no end to the interesting people.â
The match had barely ended, but the Tower would already know of his loss. Reinhardt had conveyed the news in real time to the entire continent using crystal balls. Everyone on Igrant would know he was a loser, but, for some reason, Theta didnât feel all that bad. In fact, he was thrilled because heâd found a new goal.
âThat magic was like nothing Iâve ever seen⌠Was Masterâs magic better than that lightning?â Theta pondered it for a moment before shaking his head. The white beam of light was the most amazing sight of his lifeâwhen he was a child. It was an impressive feat of sorcery, but if he saw it today Theta had no doubt he would not be as impressed.
âTo defend, and to become emperorâŚâ Theta laughed. âHeâs a weird, funny person. He reminds me of myself in a lot of ways. MaybeâŚâ He stared into the sky. âMaybe itâs going to be an excellent partnershipââ
Thetaâs pocket buzzed. He grinned and produced a glowing crystal ball.
âWere you worried about your disciple? I see you wonât stop calling me.â
âI thought youâd be unhappy, but I guess not.â
âOh my god! Iâm so hurt. Grandpa Tower Master, why would you think of me like that?â
âI know that my disciple just got defeated by someone younger. Half your age, in fact.â
Theta scowled. âYou wouldnât be saying that if you met him,â he pouted.
âWas he that good?â
Theta was silent for a moment. His characteristic smirk disappeared.
âBetter than anyone Iâve ever seen.â
Ian fell silent. Even with all his years of experience, that was a difficult statement to accept.
âHey, even I didnât believe it until I saw it,â Theta muttered.
âThereâs something I want to share with you.â
âHmph. If youâre just gonna get angry and nag me again, Iâm going to cut the callââ
âIâm looking for someone to be the Vice Tower Master.â
Thetaâs eyes widened. âYou havenât even filled Steropesâs seat and youâre already looking for a Vice Tower Master? The position has been empty for decades now. What made you come around?â
âHavenât there been people telling me that Iâm getting old? You have no interest in the Magic Tower, so what else am I supposed to do?â
Theta suddenly had an ominous feeling.
Why am I thinking about our conversation?
He shook his head. âSo, who did you have in mind?â
The old man was silent for a long moment. Thetaâs anxiety grew with every passing beat.
âEvergrant von Aswald. Iâm going to give him another chance.â
The dreadful omen had come to pass.
âCongratulations.â
âCongratulations!â
Joshua returned to the hostel for the first time in a while. Unlike his normal, however, he was greeted warmly.
âYou just barged into my home?â
âOh, umâŚâ Iceline looked flustered. âThe door was unlocked, um⌠I wasnât⌠planning on doing anything.â Sheâd rushed to his home before the other two got there, but evidently Joshua wasnât as enthusiastic about it as she was. Iâd never have imagined heâd be so frosty. Is he mad? Of course he is. Whoâd want people intruding into their sanctuary? Iceline laced her trembling fingers together sadly.
Akshuler glanced at her and tried to choke down a laugh, but a giggle slipped out and he couldnât stop his shoulders from bouncing.
âWhat do we do? Itâs such a nice night, though. I thought fame wouldnât change you, but I supposed I misread you. Sorry, Joshua.â
ââŚEveryone needs some privacy.â
âDonât be so cold!â Akshuler gestured exaggeratedly. âBe a little kinder! She brought you a present for reaching the finals. Maybe itâs the present you need.â
Joshua remained stoic, but Akshuler was undeterred.
âIf the rumors are to be believed, you desperately need this information.â
âInformation?â Joshua looked a tiny bit interested.
âBefore thatâŚâ Akshulerâs voice dropped. âI need to verify somethingâitâs related to the rumors I just mentioned. I thought itâd be best to ask the man himself.â
Joshua gave him a questioning look.
âThe Pontiersâthe 5th Dukeâwere having a situation. Thereâs been rumors that you and your troops have been aiding the Pontiers. Iâve been hearing them too often.â
Joshua was surprised that the Pontiersâ war with the Crombells had come up, but of course he knew exactly what Akshuler was talking about. Marquis Crombellâs successor, Gehog, had bad blood with Joshua as well.
âOf course, everyone decided that this was a clever ploy by Duke Agnus to pay his respectsâbecause even the Imperial family has no motivation to assist a doomed family⌠except that changed a little while ago.â Akshuler shrugged. âNo matter how talented you are, youâre only fifteen years old and only a B-Class Knight. But then you became battalion commander of the Imperial Knights; you even attracted the attention of the Emperor, such that he personally assembled a company for you to captain.â The mercenary sighed thoughtfully. âAnd then you go on to challenge the Master Battle and become one of the most promising Masters on the continent.
âIn Avalon, interest in the name âJoshua Sandersâ is hotter than the Princeâs flames. Youâre already a hero in Avalon.â
Joshua already had the story of a great hero. Even Iceline looked excited from listening to it.
âA lot of people are already wondering what kind of magnificent present the Emperor will bestow on you. He may be a tyrant, but he knows how to use the carrot and the stick.â
âSo what exactly are you trying to ask me?â Joshua asked, annoyed by Akshulerâs rambling.
âWell, thereâs only one answer to that, isnât there: are you assisting the Pontiers of your own will, or the Dukeâs? Just to be clear, your answer is going to change my gift.â
âIâŚâ Joshua was momentarily dumbfounded; his blue eyes were wide with surprise. âYour will can not be bound to a choice. The results of a demand or an order cannot be considered your will.â
âThen youâŚ?â
âI mean that I assist the Pontiers by my own will. I assist Iceline in uncovering the truth of Count Rebrecca by my own will.â
âJoshuaâŚâ A strange light burned in Icelineâs eyes. It was a subtle, tangled mix of emotions.
âHehâŚâ Akshuler chuckled. âAlright. Thatâs what I expected.â
âThen tell me,â Joshua urged. âWhatâs this information?â
Akshuler locked eyes with Joshua. âThe Pontiers are in peril. And the people⌠It looks like you donât know?â He groaned. âI donât know if they didnât tell you because they didnât want to distract you from the Master Battle, but⌠heâs on the move.â
âNoââ Joshua stiffened.
Akshuler nodded.
The Mercenary King, the apex of a million mercenaries.
