âA five-star questâŚ?â As far as I know, the entirety of the mercenary guild only has a handful of five-star quests.
The vast majority of high-level missions were four-stars. To put it into context, one of the five-star quests from Joshuaâs past life was dragon reconnaissance.
âDonât be so anxious. This is a straightforward escort request, with a substantial reconnaissance component.â
âFunny how an escort quest got rated five stars.â
âAre you going to take it?â
Joshua nodded after a moment of silence.
âIâll take care of it. When can I depart?â
âRight away. Itâs in the eastern regions of Tripiaâwhere Count Rebrecca lived.â
Joshuaâs eyes widened. Now that I think about itâŚ! He grimaced as old memories came to light.
âIf I succeed, youâll explain your relationship with her?â
âNo problem, as long as you finish it. But I acknowledge your request.â
Aiden had a bad feeling. That grin was oddly familiar.
âA test, and a missionâthere has to be a reward, right?â
âIââ
âIâm fairly certain you wonât be stingy about it.â Joshua shrugged.
I remember now. Aiden groaned inside. That middle-aged guy with the short hair. Not only did he work with excessive amounts of money, but he was also an expert at fundraising. He had the smile of a gold-eating monsterâthey called him the âgold ingotâ of Avalon.
âWell⌠itâs a test and a mission, so I do intend to compensate you. However, since this is a personal request, the pay wonât be that largeââ
âYou already know what I want, donât you? This is the hardest a quest gets, short of un-starred missions. I donât think Iâm asking for too much.â
âItâs Laypone, isnât it.â
Joshuaâs grin widened and Aiden felt the urge to grab his head and shake it. He acted like the continentâs greatest bully, not its greatest talent.
âWouldnât it be best to leave it in the hands of someone who appreciates it? Its value hinges on how valuable people find it in the early stages of testing.â
âThe creator has no intention of commercializing it at this timeââ
âInventors always want to see their devices used well.â
Joshua had a knack for thisâheâd make for a good businessman, in Aidenâs opinion. Aiden found himself unable to answer, even though the boy was less than a third of his age. Of course, he had no idea that Joshua had an entire life behind him already.
âShe holds complete authority over Laypone, as Iâm sure youâre aware. Also, my artifact is customized, so I donâtââ
âArranging a meeting with her is sufficient, because, as far as Iâm aware, youâre the only one who can. Iâll handle the rest.â
â...Thatâs probably true.â He smiled bitterly. âOkay. Iâll take care of it.â
âI appreciate it.â
Aiden shook his head, flabbergasted by Joshuaâs casual demeanor.
âYouâre something, you know that? You⌠Did you know I come from Avalon? You remind me of a nobleman I know. They call him the âgold ingotââa real gold-eating monster.â
âAh, Cox von Wagen? Not exactly the most polite-sounding nicknameââ
âI know.â Aiden smirked. âIn any case, weâve been talking for quite a while. You will attend to my request, Baron Joshua Sanders?â
âRight away.â Joshua tugged his robe back up and smiled. âBy the way: itâs not âJoshua Sanders,â Avalon aristocrat, itâs âAsh,â the mercenary.â
âAchoo!â
âHuh? Did you catch a cold, Cox?â Charles cocked her head at Cox as he sniffled.
âNo, Iâm fine. I think someone is cursing me, though.â
Charles snorted and giggled.
âI wouldnât be surprised with how you usually act.â
She lost all sense of humor after her father died, Cox thought. Itâs such a relief to see her like this, rare as it is.
No, she hasnât found her sense of humorâsheâs found herself. He smiled. We owe it to them.
âThey really are incredible. Sir Cain has already taken to training our family, and Icarus remains shut in her chambers, plotting her next move. Itâs clearly someone elseâs business, but theyâve taken to it with aplomb.â
Cox was extremely grateful, even though he considerably outranked both of them. He nodded appreciatively, especially thankful for the young man who sent them.
âYes,â Charles agreed. âWe are forever grateful. They ought to be rewardedâwe are not a great family for nothing, after all.â
âJust the two of them?â Cox smiled menacingly.
âWhat?â Charles shivered.
âAll Iâm saying is that theyâre just following their masterâs commands. Their prize should account for him, too.â
âOhâŚâ Charles flushed. âOf course. We owe him our thanks as well. However, even if we succeed, the cost of rebuilding the family and our finances would be considerable. Monstrous, even. A princess with no sense of money wouldnât understand, she already has more than she knows what to do with!â
âTrue⌠but if everything goes well, weâll swallow all of their business, too. So the rewardââ
âYou seem optimistic, but it seems to me like itâs only possible because of his help. Besides, do you think money is a joke?â
Coxâs eyes widened.
âDonât you understand how money works? We need to rebuild everything from the ground up,â Charles berated. âEven if our family is a giant and we somehow win the war, we still have to regain the trust of our customers.â
âWellââ
âWe need money to make money. Itâs going to be a long time before itâs smooth riding again.â
âItâs a manufacturing plant, so itâll be extremely profitable even if left alone, soââ
âEnough, Cox. I know.â
âThen donât talk about money so casually.â
âThe reputation of our family as merchants is our top priority. If we ask for help without paying it back, how are we to earn our prestige back?â
âWho said there would be no compensation?â Cox gave her a wide-eyed look.
â...Isnât there?â
âI brought up money as an example⌠but Iâm certain that Young Master Joshua isnât concerned about such things.â
This coming from a man who loved money more than his own life.
â...But?â
Cox grinned at her.
âWithout money, thereâs only one option isnât there? Put your whole body into it.â
Charles stared blankly at Cox for a moment.
âC-Cox!â She flushed bright red. âWhat are you saying?â
âA relationship with the man who saved you⌠Itâs like a fairytale!â
âGetâget out! This money pinching man!â
A Pontier aide burst in, interrupting Coxâs teasing.
âThis is serious! The Crombells are on the move.â
Charles and Cox locked eyes, and went scrambling out the door.
