Joshuaâs heart was beating rapidly as he exited the Palace. His waiting guest was mesmerizing: waist-length, flowing light blue hair and eyes like gems plucked out of the heavens; a petite stature (less than 160 centimeters), and perfectly proportioned. Not beautiful like Charles, but charming and adorable.
Just like Joshua remembered. He hadnât changed.
âIcarus?â
âAh.â Icarus pulled his gaze away from the stars and smiled at Joshua. âBaron Joshua.â
âMy wordâŠâ Cain gaped. âMy lord! Who is that gorgeous lady over there?â
âI donât know eitherâI think my mind is playing tricks on me.â Joshua shook his head, half-convinced he was hallucinating. He knew Icarus was pretty, but wasnât this a bit much? He looked just like a woman when he grew out his hair.
Was Icarus a woman all this time? He couldnât know for sureâJoshua had never met Icarus before he traveled back in time, only heard of hisâher?âexploits. Heâd always assumed that, in a country as patriarchal as Avalon, the Emperor-to-beâs strategist would be a man.
Come to think of it, there are definitely more opportunities for a man in the Empire. Maybe thatâs why Icarus worked so hard even before I died.
âItâs been a long time, Baron Joshua.â
âYour hairââ
âAhâŠâ Icarus touched the long locks while Joshua was still struggling with his inner turmoil. âDoes it look odd? Iâve been growing it out for a while now.â
âNo, no⊠I mean, it looks good.â
Icarusâs face lit up.
âItâs justâŠâ Joshuaâs eyes lingered on Icarusâs body.
âYes?â
âA little too⊠womanly.â
âWhere are you looking?â Icarus flushed, hands coming up to block Joshuaâs gaze.
âMy lord!â Cain was enraged. âHow could you be so rude to the lady?â He stepped forward while Joshua turned away, confused. âAh, miss Icarus. I have heard the rumors: the most brilliant strategist of the Academy and one of its top studentsâI never knew you would be both brilliant and stunning!â
âIâm sorry⊠who are you, again?â
âI am Cain, Baron Joshuaâs knight.â
âSo⊠are you really a⊠woman?â
âWell, is it important?â Icarus seemed oddly irate. âDo you have some hidden prejudice against women, Baron?â
âDoes it look like it?â Joshua replied.
âOf course not. I wouldnât have come this far if you did.â
âItâs an honor.â He smiled.
âI came here to fulfill my promise. Are you finally accepting me?â
âHuh? Whatâs this about?â Cain managed to move past the fact that Icarus had ignored him and found that the conversation was moving in a direction that could be easily misunderstood. âThe master truly is a troublemaker! Arenât the two most beautiful ladies in the Empire enough? Are you now going after the Academyâs brightest student, too? Isnât that a little too much?â
âMost beautiful women in the Empire?â Icarusâs gaze rapidly cooled. âBaron Joshua, I believe you owe me an explanation.â
Joshua broke into a cold sweat under Icarusâs contemptful gaze.
âStop making the conversation weird, CainâJust calm down and listen, Icarus.â
âBut Iâm not making it weirdââ Cain caught Joshuaâs stern look and backed off with his tail tucked between his legs.
âRight⊠You said you came to fulfill your promise?â
âThatâs right. You didnât forget, did you?â
âImpossible.â Joshua held out his hand with a smile. âI would have gone to you if you hadnât come. Thereâs no one else like you.â
Icarusâs cheeks flushed again. Of course, Joshua was referring to Icarusâs skillâno one else knew them as well as Joshua did. But the way it sounded in Icarusâs earsâŠ
âThey say a soldier has to refuse twice to find a master that knows their true worth. If I went to you, you might have had to ask three times.â
Icarus grinned and took his hand.
âAre you going to keep harassing me?â
Cain stepped in and clapped his hands on their shoulders. âLetâs do well from now on, Military advisor.â
âThatâs a nice title.â Icarus gave Cain a dazzling smile.
âSo⊠Shall we discuss our plans now?â Joshuaâs eyes gleamed.
âPlans?â Cain and Icarus cocked their heads at him.
He nodded. âIâm thinking of meeting the Emperor and then leaving for Reinhardt.
âThe neutral city?â
âI intend to leave the Imperial Knights, like you.â
âWill the Emperor allow it? And what about the 11th and 12th Battalions if you leave?â
âThatâs why Iâm meeting the Emperorâthe 11th and 12th, too.â Joshua grinned. âWeâll meet again if fate wills it.â
âCold-hearted.â
Joshua let Cainâs words go in one ear and out the other.
âAs for you two, I have a favor to ask. Iâm really sorry, butââ Joshua grimaced regretfully as Icarus. âI donât want you two to go to Reinhardt. Instead, I need you elsewhere.â
âWhat? What do you mean?â
âAfter all those years of separation, weâre going to split up right after we met? Really, my lord?â
âPlease donât get me wrongâitâs only for a few months, and Iâm asking because you two are the only ones who can pull this off.â
âWell⊠Letâs listen first,â Icarus said after a long silence. âWhere do you want us to go and what do you want us to do?â
âI want you to goâŠâ Joshua paused. â...to the Pontier family.â
âThe Pontiers?â Icarus and Cain blinked at him.
âYou seeâŠâ
âTheta.â
âYes, yes.â
âDid you hear what I said?â
âCode Zero will be joining the Master Battle, right?â
âRight.â Ian nodded. âYou will represent the Magic Tower this Battle.â
âEh?â Theta leapt out of his chair. âWhy me? Thereâs no benefit in playing with those kids. The Master Battle has only had a wizard in it once, hasnât it?â
âOnly the winner of the Master Battle has the privilege of facing the Nine Stars and Twelve Superhumans. And, like the ones who surrender in the middle of the Battle, you can learn something about the Masters. Thereâs two reasons you need to join: first, to learn more about Code Zero and locating the object; second⊠Iâm getting old. Shouldnât I have at least one heir?â
âTower Master?â Thetaâs eyes widened.
âShouldnât my successor at least have credibility? Otherwise, our Tower would be ignored.â
âWhat do youââ
âYou already achieved the point.â
âYou realized?â Theta trembled.
âWho do you think I am? I felt the subtle shift in mana around you for a long time now. In terms of pure magic, only me and Evergrant can rival youâno other wizards. Theta.â
âYes, Tower Master.â
âGo settle Jackâs death. Remind the continent that our Tower still stands. Only you can do this. Are you up to the task?â
Theta sighed. â...Iâll try.â
âItâs settled, then.â Ian smiled contentedly.
