Chapter 2

“Mna-….”

It’s quite chilly.

When I opened my eyes, I find myself on an unknown bed.

On the slightly warm bed, I think I can smell that geezer’s scent.

That old person smell.

“….where could this be?”

I dumbly mutter, saying it out loud, my head finally came around.

I hurriedly scrambled out of the futon, body hurting like I ran, and arranged my unkempt hair.

“Ow-ouch….. what happened again?”

Anyway, your head can also hurt after too much sleep.

Other than that, I can’t see any injuries. I’m still relying on the memory of that fluffy feeling around my body.

“Uwah…… honestly though, where is this?”

More importantly, I look out of the window of the room, and was immediately stunned.

An unfamiliar sprawling forest.

Judging from the large slope, it seems that this is inside the mountains, but I can’t recall any similar-looking place.

I shivered and shuddered from the chilly air surrounding this place, drifting about and enveloping my body.

It’s just that the trembling isn’t solely caused by the cold.

“…..it wasn’t a dream?”

Remembering the strangeness of the dream, I let out a breath to calm myself.

This can’t be reality.

But this situation that I can’t make heads or tails of, I can only rationalize it with that strange dream.

“What ever had happened. Is this really possible? Do these kind of things actually happen?”

At a loss, another sigh escaped.

To think positively, “I really got caught up in a game event huh?” Sorta?

…..damn, I can’t keep pretending to think of it that way.

Then again, this situation can’t be helped huh, it’s come to this anyway.

To give up is human.

Either way, I should first think about what to do now.

For the time being, I’ve decided to explore this house.

From the order of the room, it seems as if it has been used recently.

The floor is clean without the tell-tale dust, the table feels like people can still eat there, but there’s no one home, not even a bit of noise.

“…..anyway, this is quite a bare room”

I held on to the impression I got, and decided to just explore the house at random.

An hour passed by just like that.

In the end, I can’t find anyone, and the exploration only yielded a letter from the first room I was in.

“…..suspicious”

My frown deepens the longer I stare at the letter.

This letter is incredibly fishy.

Placing a hand on my mouth, I held the letter before I could decide otherwise.

Now what could this be?

Holding it gingerly, there’s seems to be no such thing like an address on the thing.

The sender is most likely that old man after all.

Should I open it, should I just ignore it.

It’s just that…. I can’t find any other clues.

I was reluctant but I still ended up opening the letter.

I opened the envelope and took out a piece of paper which was folder in half. Inside, there are characters that I’ve never seen before…. it seems.

“…..I can’t really read unfamiliar letters”

In anxiety, I can’t help but mutter.

The symbols are too strange, I can’t understand any of it.

What happened to me in this unexpected incident, there seems to be more to it.

I’ve been had.

My heart is beating wildly but for now, let’s accept that I’m still fine.

At the bottom of the letter, “Testament” was written.

“Testament huh…. this really was from that old man then.”

Right, he said he was dead.

He didn’t tell me when he died though.

“Nou~u!”

I involuntarily screamed.

A bit after I unfolded the letter, a sudden burst of light hit me and burned my retinas.

I try to recover from my pained eyes, thinking I walked into a trap. I regret feeling a bit of sympathy to the old man.

“Gou-oh, why you-! my eyes…. no good will really come from that old man!”

After a few moments, the light finally came back to normal.

I opened my eyelids after some time, and see a condensed light, about the size of a beach ball, floating above the letter.

Within the light, I can see a video-like thing.

The deep blue is as sharp as a 3D movie.

Moreover, a projected person just started talking.

“To whom it may concern. If you’re listening to this, the summoning was probably a success. How do you feel?”

“….the worst, gramps. More importantly, please listen to what I said earlier.”

I didn’t think I’d see his face once again.

It’s undoubtedly the face of that old man from before.

I suddenly feel the urge to slam the letter, but it may contain valuable information so I restrain myself.

While I impatiently waited for a bit, the old man finally began to casually talk about some matters.

“Then without further ado, I’ll explain the power you have. Firstly, you may be from another world but you now understand the words from this one. This is a present from me. I’ve personally adjusted the translation magic for you. With this, you’re able to understand the languages of this world, as well as decipher their written counterparts.”

Ah, so that’s how I read that character earlier.

Magic is very convenient.

If I had this magic, I may not need more lessons from school.

Putting that aside, it looks like gramps will finally cut to the chase.

“And now, here’s the main point. I have left you with a total of seven magics”

“Just seven?”

“You’re probably thinking of something rude like ‘Just seven?'”

“……”

I didn’t expect that.

But seven huh.

Dare I wonder if there are some meaning in that number.

It seems like the old man is planning to explain further.

“These seven magics are the foundation, but they’re also the culmination of my efforts.”

“A-……you say that, but are you really okay?”

Now that I think about it, this is just his personality.

How should I put it…. quite undependable.

“We~ll don’t worry, everything’s fine, first the the most common are the great five elements of magic. Most things in this world are roughly made up with those five elements. That is, the five are: earth, water, fire, air, and void. Of the seven, those five will basically allow you to use magic that corresponds to the elements. These will be the base for most magics as well. In other words, if you know these five, you’ll be able to cast the other two magics. First, there are classifications like attack magics and similarly-natured ones, likewise, they can also be used to protect”

“He’s taken full control of the conversation again…. kinda frustrating. But [Five Great Magics] huh, it finally feels like an RPG or a card game.”

Actually, I’m a little excited about this now.

Even I like playing video games.

“The next one is [Analysis] magic. It will allow you to analyze anything or anyone. Using this you’ll know a person’s stats, what they’re capable of doing will be known to you. I blurted out my suspicions again. That made the old man quiet down, at the end, I failed to strike up a proper conversation.

When I’ve finally had enough, air slowly built up as the old man began speaking again.

“And finally….. this is the greatest magic in my arsenal. Get ready for it. This is the ultimate magic”

“Oho? Suddenly a thrilling introduction?”

Ultimate or greatest, it’s probably gramp’s favorite.

With his confidence on this one, this last magic did indeed pique my interest.

But of course, that interest immediately turned into a question mark in my head.

“The last magic, that is [Magic Creation]!”

‘Dodo~~n’ Gramps revealed with sound effects.

“It was an unnecessary build-up”

I only say what think, considering that I was told about something that I don’t understand.

“Imagination” huh? My, “creation” was it? (T/N: they both sound similar in Japanese)

That said, can I even invent magic?

Even so, just because it’s like that, I don’t have the knowledge to do something with it, right?

In the first place, magic is still a mystery to me.

The old man just went ahead talking without minding me, though I already expected him to do just that.

“Ideas are the food of magical arts, a godly craft to bring Magic into this world. And I called you to this world for such a great reason”

“He~e…. such a troublesome story”

I still can’t accept it even if there’s a reason, I’d really rather not know.

Without my consent, this ridiculous guy from the letter just carried on again.

“Magic, for Mages is the way to unravel the mysteries of the world which studies [The Art of Fulfilling Wishes], as a way to call it. You may get a result without going through all the cumbersome processes, Magic is the art to distort the laws of the world.

It is the Law of Magic. I don’t know who called it that, but I think it’s spot on. Instead, Wizards take Mana into consideration when they interact with the world. This magic is something that one must figure out for himself, using your will to draw out the Magic of the world”

Er, I still don’t get it.

“That is, you should immediately try casting magic as long as you think about it.”

Through the old man’s relentless explanations, even I start to understand the impressiveness of it.

It’s really a cheat.

And if I have this magic, I really don’t need anything else.

After all, if I want to do something, I could just execute it using magic.

You can’t get a deal as good as this anywhere else.

“It’s just that this magic requires some considerations. You’d need a frighteningly large amount of Mana to do them. Even with simple magic, you’ll dry up if your skills are half-baked. The more difficult the magic, the higher the cost will be to your Mana. This is the reason why I never taught this magic to a disciple. The old man who can’t be disturbed when he talks finally left with a satisfied face, the video disappeared.

Sure enough, that magic seems to have some disadvantages.

This is our second farewell for the day, but the information overload from the old man, as well as the impressions I got from it, are still floating in my head.

Even he himself admitted that he’s selfish, and indeed, I’ve just confirmed it.

If the last magic isn’t that profound, he wouldn’t have to go through all that just to forcefully involve me into this.

I can’t commend him for how he does things, but the effort that he has made must’ve been extraordinary.

But we~ll, it’s still normal to be mortified.

He just had to give this precious responsibility to someone.

I’ve really been involved by the old man.

Ah well, just this level of trouble is still manageable.

I lifted my face after a while, let’s change the mood around, since it’s come to this, I might as well test this magic out.
