CHAPTER 2 â IâM JUST A LEVEL 1 VILLAGER, CAN I DEFEAT THE DEMON KING?
PART 06
ââ
Maybe it was because the Demon King was caught off-guard, because despite my lousy aim and not-very-surprise attack, I managed to hit him dead-center.
âW-w-whatâs this!?â
The beam was so thick! Iris had called it a laser gun, but it worked more like a laser cannon!
The destructive-looking beam instantly engulfed the top half of the Demon King like a flash flood.
ThenâŠthe dazzling light died out, leaving a tunnel-like hole in the wall leading to the outside and a Demon King, half-charred.
âŠW-well, it was really just a reflex action on my part, but if that had defeated the Demon King, then thatâs for the best too.
I was still a little dazed, but Harissa seemed extremely excited as she looked at me with sparkling eyes.
âT-t-t-that was amazing! I thought light magic had ceased to exist in our world since hundreds of years ago! Rekka-sama is really the legendary hero!â
âOh, erm, wellâŠâ
Itâs not really magic⊠but I guess it didnât matter to Harissa.
More importantly, now that the Demon King was defeated, I needed to get back as soon as possible. Thereâs still so much I need toâŠ
âKukkukku⊠Now youâve done it.â
Just then, a thunderous bellow echoed throughout the room.
âD-Demon King!?â
âLight magic, the thing humans created in order to defeat me. Iâm surprised thereâs still someone who knows how to use it.â
It was really the Demon Kingâs voice, which meant I hadnât heard wrong the first time. It was still alive.
âBut Iâm not that weak to be defeated just like that.â
The Demon Kingâs lower half started to pulse as the charred top disintegrated. From the join, a brand new top half soon sprouted. Instead of two eyes, it had grown two more, so four evil gazes were now narrowed at me. Its arms had also split at the elbow, creating more hands with huge claws. Its scales glowed golden, and the scales on its lower half quickly fell off to be replaced with golden ones as well.
âOi, Harissa⊠Whatâs happening?â
âI-I-I-I donât know. The books never talked about something like t-t-this.â
Harissa had sunk to the floor in fear.
âDid you really think I had been doing nothing in those hundreds of years I was sealed away?â
The golden dragon laughed lowly, showing off its sharp teeth.
âYour attack wonât work with this evolved form.â
âWhat!? Really?â
I knew that easy fluke victory was too good to be true.
Seeing our flustered faces, the Demon King grinned sadistically.
âThere were two things that helped seal me away during that first battle long ago. The first was light magic. The second, that âHeroâs Swordâ that muted all my magic. But Iâd since done rigorous research into the âHeroâs Swordâ, and have successfully gained enough power to stand up against it.â
âB-but thatâs impossible!â
Harissaâs voice was full of despair.
âW-wait⊠What does that mean!?â I shouted, not understanding.
The Demon King let out a cruel smirk, baring its teeth.
âIt means that your light magic is useless against my evolved form.â
âUuuuh⊠But thatâsâŠâ
Harissaâs voice trembled, as if choking back tears.
Magic is useless against the Demon King⊠It must be a horrible blow to Harissa as a mage, no, to all the people in this kingdom, to learn that their only solution to defeat the Demon King was fruitless.
âIs that so?â
I was the only one who refused to give up.
âYes, sink into despair, worthless humans. Now bow down before me, the inescapable embodiment of destruc-â
âHey!â
I fired the laser gun again, preventing the Demon King from finishing his boastful speech.
âGYAAAAAAHHH!â
Letting out the same roar of pain, the Demon King was once again reduced to ash. The room descended into silence.
ââŠI knew it.â
I nodded wisely, satisfied that my reasoning had proved right.
âEhhhhhhhhhh!?â
Harissa screamed, a few seconds too late, a shocked expression on her face as if she couldnât believe Iâd just won.
âW-w-w-w-what is zis? W-W-Why did hero-zamaâs light magic work against ze Demon King?â
âC-calm down, let me explai-â
Just as I was about to speak, the Demon King revived itself again.
This time, its lower half had morphed to resemble a centaur, so it now had four arms and four legs. It had also grown much larger than before, its head mere inches from the roomâs ceiling.
âYou brat! What did you do to me!? Iâm immune to your magi-â
âItâs simple. Iâm not using magic, but the power of science.â
Or rather, the power of science of aliens.
âS-science?â
âNow just die!â
âGWAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHHH!â
I had no time to answer the Demon Kingâs questions; he spoke too much, as it was.
The Demon King revived again and again, and I shot it down each time.
âStop interrup-GYAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!â
âAre you really the her-UGYAAAAARRGHHH!â
âHow co-BUGYYYAAAAAAAAAAHHH!â
How irritating.
âJust how many more evolved forms do you have?â
âDonât get too cocky, brat. My powers increase every time I evolve. I still have two more evolutions you havenât yet seen.â
âSo I just need to shoot you twice more.â
âWai- GUWAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!â
And just like that, I charred the Demon King into defeat. It had said that its power would increase, but in the end, he turned into a huge barbecued dragon instead of soot, accompanied by a slightly delicious smell.
ââŠâŠâ
For a moment, we were left speechless.
To the people living in this kingdom, the romantic legend of the hero defeating the Demon King would probably be destroyed by how things actually turned out. But does it matter, since the Demon King was defeated afterall?
And through this experience, Iâd also learned something important.
If this had been the only âstoryâ I was dragged into today, I would probably have acted more heroic by going to retrieve the âHeroâs Swordâ before embarking on my journey to battle the Demon King. Iâd surely have travelled to the tavern to seek out some comrades, we would battle tiny monsters to level up our sword skills and magic, then head over to the Demon Kingâs fortress.
However, we would probably have a tough time battling the Demon Kingâs second evolved form, since magical attacks wouldnât work. That said, Iâd been dragged into three âstoriesâ simultaneously, which meant that the common laws in that âstoryââs world -or its rules, if thatâs what theyâre called- might not apply to me.
This knowledge might come in handy when I resolve Satsuki and Irisâ âstoriesâ. I commanded my brain to commit this information into memory.
ââŠSo, guess thereâs nothing more to be done here. Letâs head back to the palace.â
âO-ohâŠâ
To see the powerful Demon King utterly defeated by the unknown power of science, Harissa could only nod with a dumbfounded look on her face.
