âI certainly donât sense the presence of any living beings coming from that city. If thereâs supposed to be ten thousands of souls present, itâs definitely weird that I canât detect any of them, though.â (Emil)
Once Emil speaks up after hearing Renyaâs worries, Lepard agrees with her while nodding his head in confirmation.
âYeah, I surely had such a hunch, too. I thought that it was odd. But, I believed it was fine to not to give a damn since no one said anythinâ.â (Lepard)
âWorry about it, at least a bit. Thatâs why itâs said that even your soul is stuffed with muscles.â (Kaede)
Lepard turns a terribly hurt expression at Kaede, who nonchalantly spit out words that everyone considered too harsh, but there was no follow-up from Kaedeâs side.
Renya ends up wondering whether those two really have a good relationship, but since it somehow works out smoothly between them, he puts it off as the subtleties between men and women being difficult to understand.
âItâs hard to imagine that they retreated. At least I donât see any advantages they could get from making such a decision.â (Rona)
When Rona stated her opinion calmly, Kurz raised his hand cheerfully and declared,
âMargrave-sama, the presence of food is definitely missing~â (Kurz)
âUmm, Kurz-san? Just what do you mean with food? No, forget it. I can somewhat guess what you mean, butâŚâ (Croire)
Croire tries to timidly retort, probably thinking that it might be a good place to do so.
While smiling bitterly at his sisterâs state, GrĂźn composedly states his own opinion.
âI intend to follow your decision, Margrave-dono.â (GrĂźn)
âAnyway, we donât have any other option but to march on and hit them once, or do we?â (Albert)
Wondering whether he should say anything here as he finds it difficult to judge whether itâs fine for him to state his opinion, Albert decided to do so, apparently believing that it also affects the safety of his comrades.
That opinion was very likely one that could be accepted in any army as a typical model answer to some extent, but Renya shakes his head.
âConsidering that a safer and more reliable plan exists for the time being, I canât agree with your proposal.â (Renya)
âJust for reference, is it alright for me to hear about that reliable plan of yours?â (Albert)
Renya confidently replies to Albertâs question, who asked with a cramped and pale face, seemingly having a very bad premonition,
âWe will blow them away along with the city from here.â (Renya)
âWhat about the residentsâ livelihood and peaceâŚ?â (Albert)
âWell, I suppose itâs a solution we canât take if there are still survivors in there.â (Renya)
After glancing in the direction of the city, Renya says,
âIf there are no survivors left in the city, or if thereâs no one besides the demon kingâs army, itâs the most uncomplicated method with the least sacrifices. Then you will just have to rebuild the city.â (Renya)
âSomething like thatâŚitâs not just a couple people who escaped from the capital. For the residents itâs their beloved hometown. If you destroy itâŚâ (Albert)
Albertâs attitude, who says that as if imploring Renya, doesnât suit a hero very much.
There were some among the dragonoid soldiers watching from the sides that openly frowned, but Albert himself hadnât the leeway to concern himself with something like that.
After all Renyaâs words about blowing everything up alongside the city isnât a figure of speech, a joke or anything like that, but words he could easily and moreover immediately put into action if they were to be approved.
âMy way of phrasing might be bad, but I think that you will have to rebuild it anyway even if we recapture it, donât you think? There will likely be very few residents who will immediately feel like using a city that had been occupied by monsters. After all we donât know what the monsters might have set up in there. In the worst case it wouldnât be strange for them to have installed some kind of device that sucks out the mana or vitality of the cityâs residents and supplies them to the demon king. If it were me, I would do just that.â (Renya)
âAnyone would come up with the idea to set some kind of trap if itâs a facility they are going to give up anyway,â Renya says.
As long as itâs not exposed, it will be a big gain. And even if itâs exposed, the only losses would be the material costs and labor used to set up the trap.
In order to hide a trap that would use the entirety of the city, itâs probably better to plant many small traps that are easy to find, Renya believed, but when he gave a single example, he noticed that Emilâs expression slightly froze, interrupted his words, and looked at Emil.
âWhatâs wrong, Emil?â (Renya)
âNo, I just thought that youâre reliably considering really nasty stuff. Arenât you more like a demon king than the demon king himself?â (Emil)
Renya sent a somewhat grim stare at Emil, who revealed a malicious smile, while snorting sullenly, and then immediately locked back at Albert, admonishing him.
âNarrowing down your options due to emotions canât be called wise. If it can be left behind, there would be nothing better than to do so, but I canât imagine or believe that there are surviving residents inside the city at present.â (Renya)
A shout reached them before Albert could even open his mouth in response.
Once everyone turned in the direction of the voice, a cavalryman glaring at Renya with an enraged look was approaching Renya.
Renya, who appraised the equipment he was wearing, judges that itâs a fairly pricey set of gear. Since heâs wearing something like that, the owner of the voice must hold a reasonably high position, Renya guesses.
âHeâs Linus Greybunarl-dono, the one appointed as the general of this subjugation force.â
Albert tells Renya, who asks for his identity, in a whisper.
Renya canât grasp the details of his figure and countenance very well since Linus is covered from head to toe in such an inflexible plate armor that Renya feels like pitying the horse, but the eyes glaring at Renya from within the helmet are grim and stabbing.
âThere was a great number of inhabitants in that city. Thereâs no way that they have been all killed in such a short time!â (Linus)
âDonât shout. It will affect morale, you know?â (Renya)
After indifferently answering the cavalryman, who approaches with a force as if heâs going to bite, as though having heard something bothersome, Renya asks Albert, apparently having realized it just now,
âDid you say Greybunarl?â (Renya)
âJust as youâve guessed, heâs the son of the Dragonoidâs Witenagemotâs chairman.â (Albert)
âThe son of that person, huhâŚ?â (Renya)
This will be annoying, Renya sighs once while recalling the face of the elderly chairman of the Dragonoidâs Witenagemot that isnât very wise.
Renya didnât know how he took his sigh, but Linus, who had gotten very close, became even louder while glaring at only Renya.
âCan I have you stop speaking about irresponsible conjectures?â (Linus)
âMinus ten points.â (Renya)
âNo, donât worry about it.â (Renya)
Renya has absolutely no intention of providing an explanation.
Shion, whoâs in a position of naturally being exposed to Linusâ shouting since Renya is sitting behind her, grasped the reins with her right hand and tried throwing a question at Renya while testing whether she could reduce Linusâ loud voice by blocking her ear with one of her left fingers.
âWhy a minus rating all of a sudden?â (Shion)
âThe one who said that there are no presences of people in the city is the beastman Lepard, no? The sharpness of his senses is far beyond that of humans.â (Renya)
âItâs different when inside a forest, but in a place like this, even elves have to yield a bit to beastmen.â
âIf pushed to say, I think that dragonoids are peerless in regards to strength and mana, but if it comes to sensing, I believe the beastmen hero to be superior.â
Once Croire and Albert guarantee for the sharpness of the beastmenâs sense one after the other, Lepard threw out his chest in triumph for some reason.
He couldnât mention it in this place, but besides Lepardâs opinion, Renya was also largely affected by Emilâs opinion as backing for his decision.
Itâs without doubt that the beastmenâs senses are better than those of other races, but Emil is actually a demon. The sharpness of her senses should surpass that of all the other four races.
Renya thinks that he somehow might have to wallop Lepard a good one due to the triumphant look on his face and him slightly pointing his nose upwards in pride.
Renya believes that Lepard would definitely end up shriveling away in low spirits with just hearing about it, but itâs not that Renya particularly wants to tease him or get angry at his self-satisfied look. Renya saying that acting conceited doesnât result in anything decent was an expression of his very own kindness.
âItâs just as you heard. Isnât it a problem if someone like you indulges in wishful thinking while ignoring information that has this much credibility?â (Renya)
Renya hasnât the slightest intention to meddle in the movements of the dragonoidâs military forces.
If it was an unbelievable story, it would be fine if they ignored Renya and the others, and moved accordingly, but Linus apparently has no intention of releasing Renya right away, and snaps at him even further.
âItâs no definite information!â (Linus)
âI guess youâre the type that doesnât believe unless they see with their own eyes. Depending on the situation, thatâs a troublesome type.â (Renya)
âAh, so thatâs the reason for the minus evaluation, I suppose.â
âI canât say whether thatâs good or bad, or acceptable or unacceptable as a commanding officer.â
âYouâre saying that heâs just a troublesome person?â
âThatâs not something I can answer, seeing as we are in front of the person himself.â
Itâs the same as if having said so, but due to Renya playing dumb, Linusâ shoulders start to tremble.
How pitiful, Shion thinks.
Itâs because she believes that he has no chance at winning an argument with Renya when it comes to making fun of someone.
Usually people in positions like the Witenagemot or Linus have most likely never been made fun of. Even if it happens, they should be capable of crushing the other party with their authority or such without having to directly go along with it.
However, if the other party is Renya, they have to purely gain victory with their words. If they were to choose another method, they would immediately be crushed physically.
âI guess for the time being we will let your side decide your plan of action? Our side has its own plan. Since Iâm not saying that youâve got to obey our words, youâre free to do as you like, okay?â (Renya)
âYou think such reasoning will pass while campaigning with our army?â (Linus)
Being told so by Linus with a low, subdued voice, Renya dons a puzzled expression, and faces Albert next.
If he could, Albert would like to avert his eyes and feign ignorance, but seemingly understanding that he canât do that, he directly faces Renyaâs look, and murmurs a reply.
âFor the time beingâŚseeing as your position is a formal one, Margrave-dono, it has taken the form of a campaign of the dragonoid army to protect the four heroes.â (Albert)
âWhatâs with that? I havenât heard anything about something like that? So itâs fine even if I go home?â (Renya)
âMargrave-dono, canât you somehowâŚâ (Albert)
Albert tries to calm Renya whose mood had immediately become worse because he wasnât informed about the nature of the campaign.
Linus snorts in displeasure and turns his horse around.
âIâm the commander of this army. Can I have you refrain from arbitrary words and actions!?â (Linus)
âAlright, you are my enemy then, right? Stay on standby near that city since I will blow you away together with the demon kingâs army.â (Renya)
âSo youâre going to depend on your strength after all, huh? You damned, savage human!â (Linus)
A creaking sound could be heard from Renyaâs right hand.
Shion, who quietly looked in the soundâs direction, sees some kind of swaying heat haze rise from Renyaâs right hand, and senses that itâs something very dangerous.
âRenya, letâs draw back for the moment here. Certainly, if itâs you, you can completely erase the army over here alongside the city, but if you did that, you would definitely be called a demon king.â (Shion)
âThatâs right, Renya. Isnât it better to have him show what heâs got, if he says heâs the armyâs commander?â (Croire)
As if covering for Shion who restrains Renya in a slight panic, Croire brings her horse close to Renya while smiling full of composure.
âIâm sure heâll recapture the city stolen by the demon kingâs army with some exceptional strategy.â (Croire)
ââŚYouâre quite a poisonous woman for an elf.â (Linus)
âItâs my principle to counter hate with poison, and deep affection with honey.â (Croire)
Croire wards off Linusâ words, which are said as if spitting them out while glaring at her, as something that doesnât concern her at all, and laughs.
âIâm certain that the dragonoidâs army protecting the four heroes will put forth amazing efforts.â
While hiding her mouth with her hand and with a dangerous light dwelling in her eyes, Croire says,
âI wonder just how many heroes will follow your orders?â (Croire)
âSay what you want!â (Linus)
âIf itâs not just lip-service, then please show us your ability through your actions, Sir dragonoid.â (Croire)
Seemingly perceiving that he canât match her with words, Linus leaves Renyaâs group without saying anything further after hatefully glaring at Croire.
âHeâs someone who will make you feel like an idiot for simply dealing with him, Renya.â
âFor starters, letâs go with a compromise between Lepard-sanâs and Emil-sanâs arguments, and Albert-sanâs opinion?â
Croire whispers while seeing off the retreating back of Linus as if watching something worthless.
âThat man will likely deliver the first blow by himself without relying on us.â (Croire)
Croire estimates that Linus, who got all agitated, certainly wonât draw back from here and ask for Renyaâs or the othersâ help.
In that case, they will carry out the first attack with their own strength, even if itâs somewhat reckless, Croire predicted.
âDid you aim for that?â
âNow, I wonder about that?â
Croire returns Renyaâs question with a smile.
âDidnât the dragonoids and elves entertain a fairly good relationship?â
âThatâs an old story. Itâs unrelated to me, Renya.â (Croire)
Due to Croire saying so with an unconcerned look, Renya felt his innards cool down just a little bit, and harbored a small amount of pity for Linus, who had been manipulated, despite his annoying character.
