Chapter 3
On the second period in the afternoon, the chemistry teacher demonstrated the experiment on the podium. Ning Er was like a quail, his head was silently hanging down and his forehead would occasionally whacked on his wrist, leaving a red circle mark on it.
Jiang Chen propped his head against his own hand and watched Ning Er with interest. Unsatisfied, he secretly took out his cellphone and clicked the camera.
Ning Er jerked his head up.
Jiang Chen emotionally sighed: "The last time I’ve seen you like this was when we had our Language exam and you were second to the last. What’s wrong this time, Ning Er? Have you predicted the results of the final exam next month, so you began to mourn in advance?!”
Ning Er: "……"
Ning Er and Jiang Chen had been cla.s.smates for four years already. The two boys were not really familiar with each other in junior middle school, but they were always in the same cla.s.s.
Instead of looking more handsome like the other boys, Ning Er looked more delicate from an early age. But this was disregarded. However, when everyone was starting to become an adolescent in junior high school, Ning Er still had a white and clean appearance. This was soon became a focal point to girls and they would stuff love letters to him. Since his character was quiet and he had a small face, not tall and not good at sports either, the boys didn’t bother to help him, making it harder for him to have an overwhelming and powerful appearance.
While Jiang Chen could easily mixed in with boys. And it happened that they became cla.s.smates and desk mate in high school, so Jiang Chen would occasionally bring him somewhere to play basketball games. In the end, they became best buddies.
Ning Er raised his head and found out that the chemistry teacher was glaring at him.
He didn’t even listen to the lesson today because his mind was preoccupied with lots of things. Ning Er sat properly and focused his eyes to the podium.
Seeing him attentively listening to the lesson, the teacher nodded with satisfaction, but he didn’t realize that Ning Er's attention was not really on the experiment but on something else.
If his test result was bad, getting scolded by his mother was indeed miserable. But this time, it would be better not to take an exam…
When Shao Bai Han called him out, they didn’t talk much since he was in a muddled state. And when he walked back to his seat, some of his cla.s.smates gathered around him and curiously asked if he and the transfer student were acquainted.
Ning Er nodded stupidly. Fortunately, the next period started, or else his cla.s.smates might ask him about Shao Bai Han's ancestors till the eighteenth generation.
Ten minutes before the second period was over, Ning Er suddenly remembered that he promised something to Shao Bai Han.
He just promised Shao Bai Han to leave the school together!
Did that mean Shao Bai Han is living in Grandma Shao's house?
They had not seen each other for eight years, why did Shao Bai Han suddenly came to ask him to go home together?
Did it mean that they are now considered as friends?
In the end, what did it mean to Shao Bai Han…
Ning Er continued on pounding his forehead against his wrist, the teacher on the podium stared at him again. Jiang Chen couldn't help clutching his face and exclaiming in a low voice: "How bad is your result in the next final exam ah?! You've been mourning for a full two periods ah?!"
Ning Er wanted to say that getting last on the next exam was better than seeing Shao Bai Han, but he refrained himself from saying it.
The second period soon finished. And the time to leave the school was getting closer, Ning Er's mood grew more irritable and he kept on swirling his pen. At the last self-study, he spent thirty minutes to finish the homework left by the teacher and then stood with a bang.
Jiang Chen looked up at him.
Ning Er quickly said: "If someone came to see me, tell him that the math teacher asked me to grade the papers. There are too many test papers from last week that the teacher couldn’t check it, so he asked me to help." After saying it, he didn’t wait for Jiang Chen's response and immediately disappeared in the cla.s.sroom.
Fifteen minutes later, the cla.s.s bell rang. Shao Bai Han, who was holding a black bag with one hand, strode to cla.s.s four. He stood in front of the doorway and peered inside, but he didn’t find Ning Er's shadow.
His handsome eyebrow arched up as he pulled a boy and asked: "Ning Er?"
The boy was Jiang Chen, who was just pa.s.sing by from the side. He subconsciously said: "The math teacher asked Ning Er to help check the test papers."
Shao Bai Han was slightly stunned, he was left standing at the doorway of cla.s.s four while carrying his bag.
Ning Er's scores in language subject were particularly poor, but were very good in mathematics and quite partial in some other subjects.
As Jiang Chen said, their mathematics teacher was quite abnormal. He would always give them more homework than the third year students have. And every weekend, aside from having a homework from an exercise book, he would also send two sets of his own test papers. Checking the papers was not easy because that teacher was also teaching two cla.s.ses, so he would often call for two cla.s.s representatives to help check the papers.
The teacher was surprised when he showed up in the office. He happily patted Ning Er's shoulder and said: "I actually didn’t intend to call you because these papers aren’t that much. Help me grade these papers here."
He just got out of the tiger's jaw into the wolf's den1…
Ning Er spent an hour before he could finally finish grading the papers. The teacher even offered to take him home, but he refused. He then slowly went back to the cla.s.sroom.
The cla.s.sroom was already empty by the time he got there. Luckily, he borrowed the key from the cla.s.s monitor before the cla.s.s ended. He took his school bag, went out of the cla.s.sroom and locked the door.
"Are you done checking the test papers?"
Thud!
The key fell to the ground.
Ning Er was startled to the point that he pressed himself to the cla.s.sroom's door. His round eyes widened, and he looked like a scared little sheep as he stared in horror at the person who shouldn't be there at that moment.
Shao Bai Han was wearing a white and black basketball uniform, his one hand was holding a ball while the other hand was wiping the sweat on his forehead. The corner of his mouth raised: "Wait for a moment, I’ll just get my bag."
Ning Er was startled once again: "Hmm…"
Shao Bai Han strode to cla.s.s six and took a black shoulder bag. Ning Er followed behind him with a silly face, they both walked down the stairs and left the building to go to the school's parking lot.
The lash and fragrant camphor trees stood on both sides of the road. The sunlight from the gap between the leaves shone down on the ground, projecting out small circular spots.
Shao Bai Han seemed to have just finished exercising because his back was sweating. Ning Er followed behind him quietly, they even met two tall boys who came out of the gym. One of them saw Shao Bai Han and loudly said with a smile: "Why are you not playing? Your slam dunk was very good ah! What’s your name? Let’s play together next time?"
Shao Bai Han rotated the ball in a high speed with his fingers then flicked it gently using his thumb, it drew a beautiful arched in the air before dropping steadily and properly into the basket of the bike. The action was really smooth and awesome.
"Shao Bai Han of cla.s.s six. Let’s play together next time."
The two boys smiled, said a few words and quickly went away.
Shao Bai Han's bike was somewhat different from the other ordinary students. The bicycle's body parts were all black and the sunlight reflected the golden English letters that were greatly imprinted the front. It looked very cool and attractive. He pushed the bicycle out with one hand and glanced at the tire at the back of it. Then he turned to Ning Er and said: "No back seat, I can’t ride with you."
Ning Er's heart clenched upon hearing it. He was about to tell Shao Bai Han to go without him and that he would just walk by himself, but Shao Bai Han abruptly said calmly: "Let's walk together. I won’t ride the bicycle tomorrow."
Ning Er suddenly froze.
After a moment, he quickly followed Shao Bai Han and said: "You can add a back seat." He somehow immediately regretted it after he finished saying it.
Shao Bai Han stopped walking, looked down and with a serious face: "Add a back seat?"
Ning Er bit the bullet and nodded.
"No. Back seat is ugly, it doesn’t look good."
Ning Er: "……"
How did Shao Bai Han become like this?!
Ning Er lowered his head and began to recall their childhood days along the way.
In his memory, Shao Bai Han always had an indifferent look. He was holding a different kind of electronic equipments that Ning Er didn’t recognize and would play with it on the cold ground. Every time he went to Grandma Shao's house to play with Shao Bai Han, Shao Bai Han wouldn’t bother him. He would only help him open the computer and let him play Red Alert and CS2.
He really didn’t like those games. He only wanted to play with Shao Bai Han!
But Shao Bai Han was too lazy to talk to him.
But speaking of which, Shao Bai Han seemed to look like a hottie. He remembered their primary school, there was a popular Taiwanese idol drama, and the girls like the cool and bossy president, Shao Bai Han was the most popular back then. Unlike now, girls loved those who looked like a j.a.panese, Korean and American idols, so Ning Er received lots of love letters.
Ning Er followed Shao Bai Han from the side obediently, he was still silently thinking.
While Shao Bai Han was pus.h.i.+ng the bicycle with his one hand, he looked sideways at Ning Er, whose beautiful eyes were drooping low. Every time the sun shone on the long eyelashes, it would make a faint shadow that looked like a small fan, it gently hooked Shao Bai Han's heart.
Shao Bai Han quickly removed his line of sight and casually said: "You help the teacher to check the papers everyday?"
Ning Er froze for a moment, then he shook his head after a while: "No. Sometimes I don’t go."
"Oh."
Ning Er didn’t know what to say.
He racked his brains to find something to say, and at the same time, his heart was getting more and more anxious while the face was getting more and more bashful.
Shao Bai Han's voice sounded with a smile: "You're not curious on why did I come back?"
Ning Er suddenly raised his head and looked up at him.
Shao Bai Han's face had a shallow smile and his black eyes were fixedly staring at Ning Er, it was as if a deep whirlpool wanted to suck him in. Ning Er nervously looked away, in that moment, he seemed to see Shao Bai Han's smile faded a little. But when he looked back, Shao Bai Han's expression was still the same.
Ning Er forcefully shook his head: "I don’t know why you came back."
Shao Bai Han chuckled: "You're not curious?"
Ning Er: "Will you tell me?"
"I will."
"Then why?"
There was something in Shao Bai Han's eyes that Ning Er couldn’t understand: "Because I missed you."
Boom!
Ning Er's whole face became red. Shao Bai Han laughed out loud, so Ning Er felt angry and annoyed again. He really wanted to find a hole to drill himself into. He stammered: "Don't… Don’t talk nonsense!"
Shao Bai Han was very dissatisfied: "Who said that I’m talking nonsense?"
Ning Er blushed even more.
Shao Bai Han waved his hand: "Well, I’m done teasing you. I’m just talking nonsense."
Ning Er suddenly stopped walking and watched his back. In the warm golden sunlight, Shao Bai Han pushed the bicycle and walked farther and farther away, he didn’t look back as he said: "By the way, do you still live there?"
Ning Er ran to keep up with him.
Because he was a bit annoyed at Shao Bai Han, Ning Er no longer talked to this person along the way.
But he really didn’t understand how Shao Bai Han became like this after not seeing him for eight years. This Shao Bai Han would say a lot of jokes, would often tease him and would laugh sometimes.
They walked to the apartment complex' parking lot. Shao Bai Han locked the bicycle and they went upstairs together.
They were living on the third floor, and they needed to walk for a few steps before they could reach their doors.
Ning Er's parents were at work so he was all alone at the moment. He pulled out the key and just as he was about to open the door, he saw that Shao Bai Han didn’t knock on the door but had been leaning against the family Shao's door and was quietly watching him.
Ning Er deliberately asked coldly: "Why aren’t you going inside?"
Shao Bai Han: "I want to look at you a little longer."
Ning Er was really fl.u.s.tered. He quickly opened the door because he didn’t want to deal with this person.
When he opened the door, Shao Bai Han still didn’t knock on the door. Ning Er put the key in his pocket and his finger accidentally touched something inside. He froze for a moment before pulling out that thing to look at it.
Shao Bai Han laughed: "You still eat that sweet stuff?"
Ning Er suddenly remembered that his girl cla.s.smate gave him two pieces of nougat this morning. Hearing Shao Bai Han laughing at him, Ning Er puffed out one of the sugars and stuffed it into Shao Bai Han's palm with full of resentment. "You eat as well!" After saying it, he hurriedly went inside and slammed the door shut.
His back was pressed tightly against the ice-cold door. After some seconds, Ning Er turned around and looked at the peephole, quietly watching the person outside.
Ning Er saw Shao Bai Han was looking at the nougat on his hand. He looked for a moment before laughing out loud, and then knocked on the door. He only went inside when Grandma Shao opened the door, and Ning Er never saw him again.
How did Shao Bai Han become worse?!
Ning Er touched his hot face, his heart felt sour and sweet. He leaned against the door for a while before picking up his bag into the room and started his homework.
In the Shao front door, Shao Bai Han threw his bag to the sofa, opened the candy wrapper of nougat and put the milk sugar into his mouth. He seemed to recall something and couldn’t help but smile. Then he bent down to change his shoes.
Grandma Shao slowly walked over: "Xiao Han, your mother said that she called you this afternoon and you didn’t answer."
The smile on his face instantly vanished.
If Ning Er was here, he would definitely be surprised because this was the indifferent Shao Bai Han that he was familiar with.
Shao Bai Han frowned, he picked up his shoulder bag from the sofa and expressionlessly walked towards his room. When he reached the door, he leaned over and said dryly to his grandmother: "She doesn’t have to tell me anything about her. Afterall, her business has nothing to do with me."
Grandma Shao was about to say something but the door was heavily shut.
That night, Ning Er didn’t sleep well. He dreamed of Shao Bai Han.
When Shao Bai Han came back, he suddenly blocked him on the stairs and pressed him against the wall.
(T/N: Kabedon!)
"Do you know why I came back? Because I missed you."
"I want to look at you a little longer."
Then soft lips covered his own lips. Ning Er wanted to struggle at first, but then he closed his eyes and kissed back the other person.
Ning Er jolted awake, he was sweating so much and he quickly touched his underpants. His face flushed red with embarra.s.sment.
He quickly brushed aside the blanket, then climbed off of the bed, tiptoed into the bathroom and silently washed his underwear while cursing Shao Bai Han in his mind.
I really hate Shao Bai Han! Really hate him!
The next day, Ning Er was eating a bread while walking out of the door, he suddenly looked up and saw that Shao Bai Han was leaning against the door frame opposite him.
Shao Bai Han waved his hand towards Ning Er: "Hey, Xiao Er, you woke up late. You’re not afraid that you’ll be late in school?"
