Chapter 1
Cicadas on the trees were making noises regardless whether it was day or night in the hot and humid summer. There was a new construction site near the community, and it would always rumble a sound with a bang, breaking the tranquility of the garden.
A little boy in a white T-s.h.i.+rt was squatting down in a sandbox and playing in the sand with his plastic shovel. The thin sand was piled into a high tower and into a great wall. He had been playing for a while, that was why his head was full of sweat and his black hair was sticking on his pale cheeks.
He suddenly looked up, his eyes were sparkling as he stared at the boy, who was sitting on a chair opposite him. "Shao… Shao Bai Han, aren’t you going to play?"
It was a young handsome boy, who was wearing a simple white s.h.i.+rt and holding a black game console in his hands. When the little boy called him, he did not react and continued on playing the game.
The little boy climbed up the sandbox, he came to the boy's side while holding the plastic shovel and asked in a soft voice: "Shao Bai Han, do you want to play?"
The other boy still ignored him. He pouted and shouted the boy's name: "Shao Bai Han!"
The boy finally looked up from his game, he had this cold expression on his face, making him looked mature for his age. "Not playing."
Suddenly getting this answer, the little boy froze for a moment before letting out an "Oh" sound. Then he went back to the sandbox and started shoveling the sand all by himself.
The sun set in the west, two small figures were walking together towards their home.
Shao Bai Han was taller than the boy who was currently following behind him and carrying a bucket of sand. The little boy was walking unsteadily so the sand fell all over the place. Soon enough, they finally entered the apartment building. They saw a well-dressed old woman waiting outside the door with a smile. As she saw them, she quickly rushed forward, touched Shao Bai Han's head and looked at the little boy on his side.
"Xiao Er, did you have fun with Xiao Han today? Did he bully you?"
The little boy raised the sand bucket in his hands, and looked innocently at the old woman: “Shao Bai Han, today…”
The boy who was standing next to the old woman stared coldly at the little boy, making him flinched. He took back his words and whispered instead: “Shao Bai Han, today… he did not bully me today.”
The old woman smiled, she took out two packets of chocolates from her pocket and stuffed it into the little boy's hands.
The old woman then pulled Shao Bai Han to the door while Ning Er took out the house key from his own pocket and opened the door opposite them. He said in a childish voice: "Goodbye, grandma Shao. Goodbye, Shao Bai Han."
Shao Bai Han's voice lightly answered him: "Goodbye."
After entering the house, Ning Er put aside the bucket and quickly unwrapped the chocolate wrapper.
The smooth and silky chocolate was put into his mouth, it melted instantly and filled his mouth with a rich chocolate flavor.
Ning Er had never heard of this chocolate brand before. His parents rarely bought snacks for him, and even if they did buy him chocolate, it would only be of the common brands. His mother told him before that the Shao family was very rich, and this chocolate was imported, so they couldn’t possibly buy it anywhere. Ning Er did not really understand what this meant, but he knew that every time he played with Shao Bai Han, Grandma Shao would give him lots of chocolate and they were always delicious.
If Shao Bai Han was not here, did it mean that he could no longer eat delicious chocolates?
He just hoped that Shao Bai Han would be here all the time then.
Shao Bai Han suddenly appeared in Grandma Shao’s home when Ning Er was three years old. He had the same age as Ning Er, so they went to the nearby primary school together.
For his first day in primary school, mom and dad bought him a very nice schoolbag. That night, Ning Er secretly put the bag into his quilt, he was so happy that he did not sleep all night. While he was in a daze, he suddenly heard his parents talking in the living room: “That child in the room opposite us will really go to the school here? Isn’t his family rich? Why are they not sending him to the international primary school ah?”
"How do I know? Why are you so curious on other's business?"
"I'm not curious. I haven’t seen his parents, you say…… maybe they don’t want the child?"
Hearing this, Ning Er who was holding his schoolbag, suddenly came back to his senses.
The next day, it was time for them to go to school. Grandma Shao sent Shao Bai Han to the bus stop and Ning Er's mother did the same. In the school bus, Ning Er suddenly did not know what to do because there was not any familiar face, and those strangers were looking at him curiously. In just a moment, he forgot the things his mother had said to him before. He was frozen in place, and his face was getting more and more red.
"Let's go."
A warm hand suddenly grabbed his hand and lead him towards the back of the bus.
Ning Er looked up and was stunned to see Shao Bai Han. Although from his point of view, he could only see Shao Bai Han's beautiful side face, the boy was still expressionless. Without looking back, Shao Bai Han pulled him forward. When they arrived at the two vacant seats, he sat on it and no longer cared about Ning Er.
By this time, Ning Er had already returned to his senses. He took off his school bag, sat down obediently next to the boy and put his school bag on his lap.
The bus started driving slowly, Ning Er looked back through the window and saw his mother waving at him casually before turning around to go back to their apartment building. Looking at his mother's back, the tears he had been suppressing finally fell down. The little boy slightly sobbed, while Shao Bai Han was looking calmly at the trees outside through the window.
After a long time, the sobbing voice seemed to make him feel a little annoyed. His fingers that was tapping on the windowsill began pounding, exactly the same as when he was playing a game.
Finally, Shao Bai Han turned his head and said coldly: "Don't cry."
Ning Er cried so much to the point that his face looked like a steamed meat bun. He did not know where he got the courage to reach out his hand and held on Shao Bai Han's. And for the first time, Shao Bai Han showed a surprise expression.
The little boy held the warm hand and said gently while sobbing: "Shao Bai Han, I want you… you don't cry, don't… wu wu… don’t cry…"
"I'm not crying." Shao Bai Han said flatly, feeling very dissatisfied.
Ning Er cried more loudly: "You don’t cry wu wu… I… I want you, I want you…"
His face was full of tears as he cried more and more. And perhaps, it was affected by his cries, loud cries resounded in the school bus one by one. The children started screaming for their parents and the teacher comforted them anxiously.
Shao Bai Han's small face turned cold as he watched the little boy who was sitting next to him and crying earth-shatteringly.
After some time, Ning Er suddenly felt that he was being pulled into a warm hug. That person’s gentle and soft voice was completely different from the one in his memory, it was as soft as a cotton candy, sweet and soft, making him actually forget to continue to cry. He blinked his eyes foolishly.
“Xiao Er, I will always be here. Don’t cry.”
"Ning Er! Ning Er! The teacher is coming! Wake up!"
In a bright and clean cla.s.sroom, a teacher with a serious face quickly walked to the podium, making the noise in the cla.s.sroom slowly stopped. By the time the teacher began talking about the exam last week, the boy sitting by the window had already woken up. Rubbing his tired eyes and unable to concentrate, he turned his head and looked out of the window. The light-colored eyes looked like a beautiful amber under the sunlight.
He just dreamed about his childhood, which made him a little uncomfortable. He took out a black pen from his bag and swirled it with his fingertips.
The cla.s.s soon ended, Ning Er laid on his desk with his head pillowed on his arm, boredly looking at the pen he was swirling. They were now a freshman, the studies were not heavy, so just attending the cla.s.s casually was fine. Everyone could keep their pace because of that.
It was cla.s.s break, so everyone was either busy chatting or resting.
And because of the dream, Ning Er did not have any energy to join them, he just kept on swirling the pen. And then suddenly, someone said—
"Did you hear? There is a new transfer student in cla.s.s six!”
