The morning sun was shining through the curtains as usual.
The morning air felt comfortable, and it made him feel a bit drowsy, but he still got up from his bed.
She usually comes here at this hour.
And just like usual, he went to the door, stretched his hand to open it and welcome her —
‘Oh, come to think of it, she told me that she has something to do today.’
He hurriedly took back his hand in embarrassment.
There was no trace of the footsteps that usually resounded outside his door.
She already said a long time ago that she had something important to attend to today, so she wouldn’t come to his room.
He didn’t forget about it; he was the one who agreed to it in the first place.
And yet, here he was, standing in front of the door.
He pursed his lips in embarrassment, then even though he knew that there was nobody here, he still shook his head to cover it up.
‘It’s as if her coming is just a matter of course.’
And because of that, this had also turned into a habit for him.
He felt shy and bitter at the same time as he withdrew his hand from the door knob and clenched his fingers instead. He quietly turned his gaze away from the door.
His eyes inadvertently swept through the empty room.
She had always complained that this room was narrow, but it was quite spacious for a single person.
It had been a room filled with dust and rotting furniture to the point that there was nowhere to step on, and it was just a cold, empty space for him.
She drove away that emptiness along with the dust she cleared.
Restless days filled with hustle and bustle passed by inside this room.
He liked tranquility, and the days spent with here might seem to be a bit more boisterous than he preferred, but —
He didn’t dislike this kind of lifestyle.
‘Eleanor-san…’
Something in the corner of the room caught his eye. He found the food and water jug that she put in a low place, and he unconsciously narrowed his eyes.
She probably thought that he wouldn’t be able to reach above the shelf.
He bent down slightly and picked up the jug on top of a white cloth — she must’ve been hesitant to just place it directly on the floor.
He then nonchalantly turned to the table and put the jug there.
If it was the usual him, it would be at a height that he wouldn’t be able to reach unless he stretched himself — but now, he couldn’t remember that discomfort.
It was as if it’s only natural that he could put his hands on the table.
If he really ‘wanted’ to, he could also reach the top shelf, and he could also brew tea.
In fact, he was more surprised about the fact that Eleanor found it surprising.
‘Oh, but then…’
Come to think of it, he almost never thought about ‘wanting to do so’ before he met her.
He lamented that he had to spend his days immersed in the filth inside the dark room, but he didn’t wish to change his situation.
He didn’t have any expectation of change; just waiting for the day that he would be thoroughly dyed in filth.
However, ever since he met her, the things he wished for had steadily increased.
He wanted to comfort her when she’s tired.
Even if it’s just a bit, he wished that she would have a pleasant time whenever she was here.
And for that purpose, he wanted to learn how to brew tea — he never thought about that before.
Probably not even before he lost his memory.
He sighed lightly as he took out the tea set from the back of the shelf.
Will she be happy if I practice while she’s away? — it was quite embarrassing that he would think this way, and he couldn’t calm down.
‘Tomorrow, too…’
It became natural for him to look forward to the next day.
She would definitely open the door and stir things up the day after tomorrow, and even beyond that.
‘I hope this life will continue on.’
Perhaps, this unconscious thought was the strongest of all the aspirations that he had begun to hold.
Normally, Eleanor would have her breakfast with him.
The solitude that he supposedly became accustomed to was now uncomfortable somehow.
He couldn’t help but chuckle at himself for having such weird thoughts.
