Names mentioned in this chapter (which can also be found in the glossary ):
-云舒( yún shū)- Yun Shu, the female lead
– 金媛( jīn yuàn)- Jin Yuan, the original villainess in the original novel.
The author of the original novel depicted that villainess a lot. Hence, Yun Shu’s deep impression of her was comparable to that of the male and female leads.
In the original novel, the villainess was named Jin Yuan.
Although Jin Yuan had a father and was an only child, she was much more miserable than Yun Shu. Her mother became gravely ill soon after she reached adulthood, and her father was laid off from his job due to his old age.
In order to help her family, Jin Yuan chose to drop out of school to work. However, what job could she find as a girl who had just reached adulthood and had no university degree? Thus, she finally trusted a so-called manager and “sold” herself to a small company.
Jin Yuan thought that she would become a big star and make money to improve her family’s situation by joining the company. But she didn’t know that stardom wasn’t easily attainable, and she was unaware that the company she signed with was just a small, marginal company with no good resources for her. The only work they could give to her was to send her to various film productions to act in minor roles. They didn’t forget to take a cut of even the tiniest amount of money in her small roles in productions. Furthermore, they were always thinking of selling her to support the company. If Jin Yuan didn’t realise that she was cheated and became more vigilant, she would have been sold.
The consecutive blows pretty much crushed the inexperienced young girl, and in this desperate situation, the male lead reached out to Jin Yuan… Oh, with a cheque.
Jin Yuan did not want to sell her body, but she was left with no choice. Moreover, the handsome and generous man in front of her was definitely a better choice than being sold to some unknown person by her company. Thus, she chose to be the male lead’s lover, and then she couldn’t escape from the cliche and eventually fell in love with him.
After undergoing a series of events, Jin Yuan’s personality somewhat changed. She was no longer cheerful and optimistic but paranoid and had low self-esteem. Her state of mind gradually became unstable. While she thought that she was not worthy of the male lead, she also wanted him to be only hers.
Before the female lead appeared, she barely found a balance. However, after the female lead appeared, she gradually snatched all of the attention of the male lead… That balance was completely broken, and Jin Yuan’s mentality crumbled. Eventually, she did many wrong things and was sent to prison by the male and female lead, putting a full-stop to her life.
Yun Shu pitied Jin Yuan. Now that she became a character in the novel—albeit one without a name—she pitied her even more after knowing that she was by her side. Since she had robbed her of her financial backer, she felt guilty other than pity.
Yun Shu unconsciously bit her right index finger and felt conflicted.
She… She was unambitious with no dreams nor ideals. She was extremely satisfied with her current salted fish [1] life. Actually, she did not need the money on that cheque… Well, to be honest, she only agreed because she was attracted to the man.
In Yun Shu’s past life, she hadn’t had the chance to date in her prime before she passed away. In her current life, she struggled for necessities in the first part of her life and had no time to think about frivolous things. It was until she attained the position of third-rated celebrity that she didn’t need to worry about necessities and had time to fantasise about a relationship and whatnot. However, she was afraid of dating and falling deeply in love that resulted in some uncontrollable changes… Therefore, it dragged on until the man handed a cheque.
At that time, Yun Shu did not know that the man was the novel’s male lead. She only knew him because he was too famous.
He was from a privileged background. He was capable and exceptionally handsome.
To put it in more simpler and understandable terms——That man was the real-life impeccable domineering president.
Yun Shu thought. How could such a person have a normal dating relationship with me? Can’t you see he gave me money? It seems that he was just looking for a compliant lover and pet.
This is really——
Great! This is exactly what she wants!
[1] 咸鱼(xiányú)- Salted fish. There are several meanings. Firstly, it is a Cantonese metaphor for “dead”. Secondly, it is a Cantonese metaphor for “people who don’t want to move.” Thirdly, it is an internet slang for “people without dreams.” Fourthly, it is an online game term for “a player who does not or rarely spends energy and time participating in activities to improve oneself”. Lastly, it is a self-deprecating phrase on the internet “I’m a salted fish”.
