A tepid wind blew down from the castle tower and raced through the space between the two.
The cold light of the full moon threw their shadows down onto the gravel path of the inner palace.
Right hand holding the steel pipe against his shoulder and left stuck into his pocket, Takaya smiled sardonically.
âWell... Iâm honored that the Princess herself came out to welcome us in person.â
His tone practically oozed confidence.
âAnd where is your lord? I know heâs here. Give Yuzuru back!â
âMy Lord is not here.â Yuiko replied complacently. âNot now. He hath gone forth to battle. I have awaited thee here in his stead.â
âBattle? The fuck? Stop lying out of your ass!â
âAnd even were he here, he would not have troubled himself with such a lowly peasant as thee.â
âWell, excuse me for being a peasant!â
âThe lass there.â Yuikoâs glance moved towards Saori.
âHuh? âLassâ...you mean m-me?â
âI thank thee. Thou hast done well. For this I shall appoint thee my handmaiden.â
âHandmaiden, huh? You wanna do it?â
âWh-wh-what are you talking about? Yuiko-chan, stop joking aroundââ
âHey, Iâd give it a go if the payâs good, but I donât think youâre gonna need any.â
Striking the steel pipe lightly against his shoulder, Takaya said, ââCause you wonât have those bodies for much longer. Iâm not in the mood to let you skeletons do whatever you like forever.â
âWhat didst thou say?â Yuiko laughed mockingly. âAnd dost thou think thou hast the ability to drive us out?â
âWonât know âtil I try, will I?â
The skeleton warriors behind him began to move.
âThereâs no greater crime than breaking the school windows, yâknow!â
Takaya spun to face an attacking warrior and smashed him to pieces with an overhead strike.
The skeleton broke apart with a dry rattling sound and clattered into a heap on the ground like an unraveled science class skeletal frame.
Takaya snorted a laugh. âOr is that supposed to be live teaching material?â
âWoah!â Suddenly the ground beneath his feet burst apart, and Takaya tumbled sideways. âWatch it! What the hell are you doing?â
âThou darest treat one of the Takeda so?!â Yuikoâs face was stiff and pale. âThou art a monsterâa demon! Show me thy true formâreveal thy true nature to me!â
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â
âThou art no human! What art thou?â
âYeah, and Iâm supposed to take that from a ghost?â
The ground exploded once more, and Takaya leapt back.
âHey! I told you to stop that!â
âThou wilt bring disaster upon us.â Yuiko stretched out her hand and pointed at Takaya. âOugi Takaya, show me thy true form!â
In the next instant, purple fire enveloped Takayaâs body with a woosh.
Takaya had become a fireball.
âThese are the flames of purification,â Yuiko said loudly. âThey shall remove all impurities from thee, thus returning thee to thy first form, thy true form. Reveal thy true form before me!â
â...What are you blathering on about...â
Enduring the heat of the flames, Takaya looked up and returned Yuikoâs glare.
Yuikoâs eyes reflected the flames.
The ferocity of the flames increased.
The heat brought Takaya to his knees.
âO-Ougi-kun!â Unable to bear the sight, Saori yelled, âStop it, Yuiko-chan! Stop!â
Yuiko returned her gaze with cold eyes. Saori clung to Yuiko desperately.
âOh please, stop! Stop it!â
A sharp light glinted in Yuikoâs eyes.
There was a bright flash before her eyes, and Saori flew backwards.
âMorino!â Takaya yelled, and glared at Yuiko murderously. âOh well, too bad,â Yuikoâs cold laugh replied.
He seethed with hatred. Trapped within the flames, Takayaâs furrowed brows trembled minutely, and the blood vessels near his temples pulsed faintly.
â...thatâs enough!â
âHeh. Cease thy whining, thou impudent boor.â
Something shimmering welled from Takayaâs body.
âYou are pissing me off...â
Yuikoâs expression suddenly changed.
âHereâsâ!â Takaya snapped his arms wideââyour fire backâ!â
âGyaaaah!â Yuikoâs awful scream echoed across the garden as crimson-hued flames engulfed her body.
Takaya stood up unsteadily, taking deep breaths, and looked at Yuiko writhing within the flames.
âAaah...aaaaaaaah...aaaahâ-!â
âThat body doesnât belong to you!â Takaya said hoarsely.
âThatâs Yuiko-sanâs body, not yours. Your own body crumbled to dust a long time ago! Youâre already dead!â
âHow dare thee... Thou churl...!â
âAnd what are you? A mere onryou.â A roaring sound came from Takayaâs body. âLeave that bodyâ!â
Yuikoâs image blurred with a whirring sound into two.
The image quivered madly, still resisting the separation from Yuikoâs body.
âLeave NOW!â Takaya shouted, and with a rush of wind a black-haired woman flew out of Yuikoâs body. Yuiko collapsed in place.
Far behind her, the uchikake-clad skeleton of a woman with long back hair cowered on the ground.
«How dare... Thou...!» The skeleton moaned in a dreadful grating voice. «My...Lord... My...Lord...»
Sanjouâs spirit soared into the sky like a dragon returning to heaven.
A mass of purple light streaked a path across the sky as it flew towards the south.
âHey! Damn you, wait...!â Takaya yelled, and then started.
Saori rushed over. âOugi-kun!â
âMorino! Look after Yuiko-san!â
âAh, wa-wait! Ougi-kun!â
In a flash Takaya was sprinting after the light. The brilliant moonlight illuminating his path glittered on the moatâs water surface, where the castle tower stood reflected.
The difference in their power was painfully obvious.
Naoe, pushed back against a buildingâs ruined wall, struggled to hold his own against Yuzuru in the one-sided battle. Shingenâs spiritual power intruded into Naoeâs encircling «goshinha» little by little as Naoeâs powers weakened.
Naoe had thrown every single bit of his power into preserving the «goshinha», but it was fading all too quickly.
âWilt thou oppose me still?â
A malevolent smile curved Yuzuruâs lips as he nibbled away at the «goshinha» with annoyance.
âWhy not resign thyself to thy fate and allow thyself to be extinguished?!â
âIs it not better to end thy pain now?â
A mass of light landed with a flash at their feet in a burst of wind.
Naoe looked up sharply. The light thinned radically and became the figure of a skeleton with long black hair. Yuzuruâs startled eyes opened wide.
Dragging along her crumbling uchikake, the skeleton crawled to Yuzuru as if she would cling to his feet.
Yuzuru embraced her and yelled, âWhat hath happened! How is it that thou art in that form!â
«A demon... A demon comes...»
Nearby, Naoe started. Yuzuruâs expression darkened.
«The demon comes... The demon...»
Flying pieces of concrete thudded down right at their heels. Sanjou gave a shuddering scream. Yuzuru turned. Naoeâs eyes widened.
A voice came from the direction of the sputtering smoke.
âWhat the hell are you blathering on about behind peopleâs back?â said the human figure who had appeared. A high school student with a tea-colored blazer slung over his T-shirt, panting as if heâd been running, was leaning with one hand against the collapsed wall and looking over at them.
Naoe murmured his name: â...Kagetora-sama...â
Takaya walked over, his eyes narrowed in a piercing glare.
âWho the hell are you calling a demon?â
âThou...â Yuzuru snarled at him with hatred. Takayaâs lips compressed into a thin line.
âStop looking at me like that out of Yuzuruâs eyes!â
âWas that thy power? And yet thou art not a demon?â
Takaya glanced at Naoe very slightly. Cradling his wounded arm, Naoe looked back at Takaya.
âKagetora-sama, have your «powers»ââ
Takaya looked daggers at Yuzuru.
âStop talking like youâre gonna toss me out with the beans!â1
The concrete burst open right beneath his feet. Yuzuru recoiled. Takaya glared at him stonily.
âYou saying stuff like that with Yuzuruâs voice pisses me off tooââ He smiled thinly. âIâm taking Yuzuru back, Shingen.â
Yuzuruâs expression changed as if he had sensed something.
âThou art kanshousha, art thou not?â
Takayaâs eyebrows twitched. âWhat was that?â
«Demon!» the skeleton that was Sanjou screamed. «He is a demon. My Lord! We must exterminate him!»
âBring it on!â Takaya yelled, his eyes deadly serious.
Yuzuru replied, âI know thee. I met thee in my previous life. Thou...Who art thou?â
âThou art, mayhap...â Shingenâs face twitched. â...Saburou Kagetora...â
âI am not!â Takaya shouted, cutting him off. âIâve got nothing to do with any Kagetora! Iâm Ougi Takaya! Thatâs all, thatâs it!â
But Yuzuru wasnât listening. He was silent for a moment, staring at Takaya with something like astonishment.
âSo I see. A demon indeed.â He gave a ghastly chuckle. âSince that is so, I must destroy thee.â
âWhoâs the demon here, you asshole!â Takaya yelled. âGive Yuzuru back, Shingen! Leave Yuzuruâs body!â
âI, retreat? A proper jest!â Yuzuru responded gravely. "I shall perform kanshou on this body. I cannot relinquish it, for I have need of this oneâs «power» to gain supremacy over the «Yami-Sengoku».
âShingen, you bastard!â
The concrete suddenly exploded into flame. Naoe reacted immediately, protecting Takaya and tumbling them both to safety. ...Yuzuruâs eyes glinted with blood-lust. The wall next to the stairs where they had landed exploded. Separated by crumbling concrete, the two scattered in opposite directions
âDonât! Kagetora-sama!â Naoe cried out urgently from the shadows behind a car. âYou must not attack with «nenpa» in anger! You will injure Yuzuru-sanâs body!â
âThen what the hell should I do...?!â
With a loud boom fire erupted from the ground beneath Takayaâs feet. He tumbled aside, but his landing spot was immediately nailed by Sanjouâs «nenpa».
âKagetora-sama!â Naoe yelled, running towards him. Yuzuruâs «nenpa» struck continuously at his heels, not allowing him to regain his feet. Naoe evaded the imminent danger and bounded to Takayaâs side.
âAre you okay? Kagetora-sama!â
âFeels...like I got socked...in the solar plexus...â
Another explosion. The two flew to right and left, putting a large distance between them. No time to catch their breath.
Crimson flames blazing at their backs, Yuzuru and Sanjou attacked them with increasing power. Shingen yelled, âAccept thy defeat, Kagetora!â
Sanjou shrieked with a touch of madness, «You have nowhere to run!»
From the opposite side Naoe called out, âKagetora-sama! We cannot attack with «nenpa»! We must do it! There is no other choice!â
(Does he really expect me to perform «choubuku»...?!)
Takaya shouted between clenched teeth. âI-I canât do it! Damn it, I canât do something like that!â
A chunk of concrete from an explosion hit him squarely on the head.
Takaya stumbled confusedly to Naoeâs side.
âCome on, youâve gotta do something! Otherwise weâre really gonna get killed at this rate!â
âThatâs why we must perform «choubuku».â
Naoe narrowed unsparing eyes. âFrom the looks of it, the female spirit is fairly weakened. She should not be difficult. The problem will be Shingen.â
âAugh, fine already, just tell me what I gotta do!â
The enraged Yuzuru approached threateningly.
âYou scheme like the veriest varlets! If you are true warriors, then come and face me in noble combat!â
âWhat the hell did you say?â
Checking Takaya, Naoe said in a lowered voice, âWe will «exorcise» Shingen. However, I doubt an ordinary method will work. Let us use «kekkai-choubuku»ââbarrier exorcism.ââ
â??? Kekkai-choubuku?â
âWe will paralyze Shingen, then construct the barrierâplease think of it as a dome-shaped container covering us. It will block «power» within a thirty-meter radius.â
âYou really think I can do something like that?!â
âYou can. We will then summon Bishamonten within the sealed container. It is the most effective way of utilizing our power of «choubuku».â
âYouâre...not joking, are you.â
âHowever, this method of exorcism consumes an enormous amount of physical strength. If we fail, it will not be possible for us to try again. In the worst case, it may even cost us our lives. Will you attempt it even knowing that to be the case?â
Takayaâs expression abruptly froze, butâ â... Thatâs the only way to save Yuzuru, isnât it?â
âIf we gotta do it, then letâs do it.â
The asphalt exploded violently right in front of them. They leapt backwards. Jagged pieces of debris grazed past their faces, and Takaya quickly pressed a hand against his temple.
Naoe yelled, âKagetora-sama!â
He touched the spot with his right hand, and his fingers came away dripping with blood. Anger boiled up as he saw the blood, and something snapped within him. He yelled towards Shingen angrily: âThatâs fucking enough, you assholes!â
âSilence thy profane tongue, Kagetora!â Spiritual energy flared from Shingenâs entire body. âBe thou here extinguishedâ!â
(Iâm going to «exorcise» him...!)
Climbing to his feet, Takaya yelled out, âNaoe! Letâs do it!â
The two shouted in unison, â (bai)â
The air around them froze with a sharp skreen. Sanjouâs ghostly body could not move. She had been paralyzed by «gaibaku».
Naoe and Takayaâs eyes widened simultaneously. There was one other who should have been bound by «gaibaku».
Shingen returned their gaze as if he had felt nothing at all.
Noticing the fleeting strangeness of his surroundings, Shingen muttered coolly, âWhat have you done?â
(The «gaibaku» isnât working...!)
Takaya quickly turned to Naoe. Naoe pressed his hands together once more in the symbolic gesture and focused all of his spiritual energy.
For a moment, Shingen looked away as if heâd felt a shock, butâ
âWhat is this? You would use Uesugiâs witchery on me?â
Naoe blanched. Even the «gaibaku» had no effect against Shingen at his full power.
If they couldnât use «gaibaku», then they would not be able to focus the barrierâs intensity, and it would be impossible to perform the exorcism.
âYou impudent wretches... If you sought to provoke my wrath, then you have achieved your aim exceedingly well!â
Yuzuruâs distorted face was demon-like in its murderous rage. Naoe and Takaya stood dumbfounded.
âVanish forever from this worldâ!â
The ground under their feet shook with a dreadful rumbling sound, then rose up and exploded right in front of their eyes.
Without thought Naoe enveloped Takaya in his «goshinha», but lost the timing for his own protection. Aiming for that opportunity, Yuzuruâs «nenpa» attacked Naoe like a hail of pebbles. His clothes were torn to shreds. Blood splattered.
Takaya cried out, âNaoe!â
The three turned toward the voice. A young woman in school uniform was running towards them. It was...
Had she come chasing after him?
âOugi... Yeek! Narita-kun!â
Naoeâs eyes caught sight of the bracelet on Saoriâs wrist through a haze of pain. Ah! he thought. Of course.
(The «talisman bracelet»âs Eight-Verse Dharani!)
âPoint that bracelet towards Yuzuru-san! Hurry!â
Saori turned to him. âHuh? What?â
Reading Naoeâs intentions, Takaya shouted at Saori, âMorino! Point that bracelet at Yuzuru! Just do it! Hurry!â
âThis? Point it at him?â
And Shingen realized what they were doing.
âAh? That bracelet is...!â
Saori pointed the bracelet towards Shingen.
âAh!â Shingen yelled, covering his face. âThe Eight-Verse Dharani?! How dare you?!â
âWhat is this!? Ougi-kun! Whatâs going on?!â
âNevermind! Just keep pointing that thing at Yuzuru!â
Rejecting the pure light released by the bracelet with all his strength, Shingen strained to reach out with his power.
Saori screamed, clutching at her wrist. Shingen had attacked her arm with his «nenpa».
âOw ow owâ! Stop it!â
The «nenpa» tightened around Saoriâs wrist as if it were going to smash the bracelet or break off Saoriâs arm.
âThat hurts! Stop itâ!â
Takaya dashed to her at once. At the same time, Naoe aimed at the ground beneath Yuzuruâs feet with his will.
Yuzuru flinched from the smashed asphalt for an instant. The power pressing against Saoriâs wrist slackened. Takaya rushed to her. Saori clung to him, facing crumbling as if she was going to cry.
âAre you okay? Nothingâs broken, right?â
âWhatâs going on? Whatâs wrong with Narita-kun?â
Yuzuruâs eyes lighted once more. Takaya seized Saoriâs bracelet with both hands as Shingen attacked with his «nenpa».
The terrible power attacked Takayaâs hands. Takaya stubbornly resisted, concentrating his own power there.
âNaoe! Over here! Shield the bracelet!â
Naoeâs «goshinha» enveloped the space around the bracelet in a sphere of light. The power tightening around the bracelet just barely weakened.
âOugi-kun! Whatâs going on? Whatâs happened to Narita-kun...?!â
âYuzuru isnât Yuzuru right now! Heâs been possessed by a monster!â
Rage twisted Yuzuruâs face.
Takaya, flung away by Shingenâs power, crashed into the hood of a car behind him. The windshield exploded. Suddenly the car jerked and then began to shake.
In the next instant the car exploded into a pillar of fire.
âNoâ!â Saori screamed, cowering. âStop itâ!â
Naoe had caught and shielded Takaya as he tumbled to the asphalt.
âNarita-kun! Stop it!â
Saori rushed over to Yuzuru. Yuzuru turned towards her. Naoe began to chant the Eight-Verse Dharani.
âOn anarei bishaji birabajiradari bandabandani bajirabanihan huuntoruunhan sowaka!â
The bracelet began to release an even stronger light. Yuzuru cowered where he stood.
â...! Away! Come not near me!â
Saori, wearing the bracelet, embraced Yuzuru.
âWaaaaaaagh!â Shingen raised his voice in a terrible scream. Yuzuru struggled desperately in pain against Saoriâs clinging hold.
âLet go! Release thy hold!â
The Dharaniâs power was hurting Shingen more than they had guessed.
âOooooooough, auuuuugh!â
His spiritual aura steadily decreased and began pulsing unsteadily as his perfect power began to fail. This fact was not overlooked by Takaya and Naoe.
The two raised their voices simultaneously.
Shingen could no longer move Yuzuruâs body; he had been bound by «gaibaku». Takaya yelled, âGood! Morino, step back!â
An invisible film enclosed the space around themâthey had been sealed into the choubuku barrier. Naoe chanted, his hands pressed together in the symbolic gesture, âNoumakusamanda bodanan baishiramandaya sowaka!â
Takaya took over the chant. âAri nari tonari anaro nabi kunabi!â
The two raised their voices together: âLet your evil grudges be shattered! All our enemies shall yield before us!â
Yuzuruâs eyes widened. Sanjou gasped.
Takaya and Naoe raised clear voices in a trumpeting call to heaven: âNamu Tobatsu Bishamonten! Appear before us!â
A white light flashed across the night sky like lightning. A moment later, another gigantic blaze of light pierced through the heavens and fell to the earth with a terrible crash of thunder.
Engulfed within the light, all of them unthinkingly braced themselves against the shock that shook the ground.
The voice within Shingenâs mind cried out in wordless terror.
A column of white light stood protectively over Takaya and Naoe. It seemed to have taken shape straight from a Buddhist drawing; it held a two-storied pagoda in its left hand, a halberd in its right, and its body was clad in armor and helm in the style of the Chinese Tang Dynasty.
A god of war stood there in all his majesty.
Shingen gazed up at the ten-meter-tall figure with wonder and terror intertwined on his face. Indeed, it was Bishamonten, the protector of the North, god of victory and guardian of Buddhism. Enveloped in white light, he gazed down at Shingen with what seemed like stern command.
(No way...) Takaya thought, speechless and dumbfounded. He looked up at this impossible being for a long moment before his gaze sharpened.
âYouâre done for, Shingen! Give Yuzuru back!â
Shivers rattled through his entire body. He knew that there would be no mercy for him.
Takaya cried, âWe now begin the ritual of kouhou-choubuku. To be exorcised are the spirits of Takeda Shingen and Sanjou.â
Light crackled from Bishamontenâs body as if in reaction to his words. He concentrated his spiritual energy in the space between his eyes and chanted the mantra of Bishamonten:
âNoumakusamanda bodanan baishiramandaya sowaka.â
A red shimmering heat haze flared from Takayaâs body. At the same time, a swirling wind rose from the ground beneath their feet to fan through their hair.
âWe, the Yasha of the Roku Dou, pledge ourselves to the purification of all souls. Come forth!â
âNamu Tobatsu Bishamonten!â
âAway! Come not near me!â
âFor this demon subjugation, lend me your power!â
An intense light blazed from Bishamonten at Takayaâs words and condensed into Takayaâs folded hands.
Takaya gripped a sword in both hands. Bishamonten had transformed into a luminescent sword radiating such intense energy that its light buzzed in his ears. Takayaâs auraâ
He was blazing with a sublime crimson aura!
The light exploded from Takayaâs sword in an incandescent flare that seemed to rend the air apart.
The power of the light distorted the very atmosphere around them. A terrible energy hurtled into the spiritual bodies of Shingen and Sanjou in the form of a storm that shred apart their bodies and ripped away the attachment of their souls. They could not think or even scream in the face of this overwhelming power. Their spiritual bodies were being crushed!
Sanjouâs spirit disappeared into air.
Shingen howled, âOooooooooughâ!â
Shingen resisted, defied that power pulling at him with all his «spiritual power» and clung to Yuzuruâs body with terrible desperation. But the energy of the «choubukuryoku» released by the sword tore at him relentlessly, engulfing him in its light until he could see nothing but white.
The sword protected Takayaâs body from its own powerâsuch terrible power! Everything had bleached to white, and light filled their entire field of vision.
âOooooooooughâ!â cried Shingen with his last resistance.
For an instant Yuzuruâs image blurred, and finally with a blast of wind Shingen was thrown out of Yuzuruâs body.
â!â Takayaâs eyes widened. âShingen!â
The choubuku barrier was rent apart from the inside, and an arc of light streaked away against the night sky towards the west.
The light of «choubuku» overflowed to engulf the terminal building and illuminated the entire Matsumoto sky. At its peak the field of white rumbled across the heavens before it was finally swallowed up once more by the night, and darkness gradually returned to the city.
Naoe ended the ritual with the âmantra of unsummoningâ:
âOn basara bokisha bokuâ.
Takayaâs eyes widened. The blade-form incarnation of Bishamonten which he had been gripping so tightly vanished with a breath of wind from his hands.
Stillness returned to Matsumoto Station . Saori, Naoe, and Takayaâand a youth lying upon the groundâremained.
Takaya crumbled to his knees.
The power which had sustained his body had evaporated. Takaya sighed and turned to Naoe, who was supporting him at his side.
â...Iâm fine. But...what about Yuzuru?â
Naoe went towards Yuzuru and picked him up in his arms. He took Yuzuruâs wrist and felt his pulse. Nothing out of the ordinary. Yuzuru was fine.
Saoriâs legs gave away, and she sat down abruptly on the ground.
âKagetora-sama,â Naoe said.
âIâm sorry. Naoe...â The haggard Takaya murmured in a drained voice. âI couldnât complete «choubuku» on Shingen.â
Naoe stared at him. âWhat did you say?â
âI was able to drive him out, but I could not perform «choubuku»,â Takaya murmured painfully. âHe broke out of the barrier. I let him get away...â
Naoe returned Takayaâs gaze for a moment in silence.
(He couldnât maintain the barrier. I guess he really hasnât regained his full powers...yet?) His brows knit slightly.
But out loud Naoe said calmly, âStill, Yuzuru-san has returned to us safely, and thatâs more than enough for today.â
Takaya turned. âNaoeâ...â
Naoe patted Yuzuruâs face lightly. After a moment, Yuzuruâs eyelashes fluttered.
âUgh...â he moaned, and his eyelids slid open feebly. His eyes cleared slowly before suddenly widening.
âAre you okay, Yuzuru-san?â
Takayaâs usual smile finally returned as his gazed at Yuzuru.
âFinally decided to wake up...Yuzuru?â
They could hear the distant sound of sirens. But no one disturbed the four loitering awhile at the burned remains of the terminal building.
Someone gazed down at them from the rooftop of a station shopping center buildingâsomeone who had seen the entire series of events from beginning to end.
âHumph. So, Kagetora, youâve finally awakened, have you?â Jet-black hair flowing in the breeze, Kousaka Danjouâs lips curved in a smile.
Of course, it was true that he had not been able to perform «choubuku» on Shingen, but that was no surprise given that he had just awakened.
He closed his eyes against the night wind.
They had lost Sanjou, but from all appearances Kousaka didnât precisely think it was something to grieve over.
(Call it an investment made towards Kagetoraâs awakening.)
Though it was true that they had lost a potential asset in a fight...well, whatever. Her powers had been limited in any case.
(Breaking out of Kagetoraâs choubuku barrier was no less than I expected of you, my Lord,) Kousaka smiled mirthlessly.
ââHmm. Truly, I, Kousaka, am glad to be a vassal in your service,â Kousaka said, and opened his eyes. âIâll take my thanks from your «power» someday. Uesugi Kagetora. Naoe Nobutsuna. And Takeda Shingen. Because all of you are...my trump cards,â he murmured to himself, and looked down again upon the noisy, chaotic streets of Matsumoto .
To allow Shingen to escape, the territory barrier had also been unraveled.
And Kousaka quietly gazed up at the golden moon hanging in the sky.
The moon floating wordlessly in the empty sky, as if nothing of note had occurred.
tossing out the beans: at some point in Japanese antiquity beans became the symbol for evil spirits dwelling in homes and other buildings, so âtossing out the beansâ is a ritual performed at the beginning of spring (a festival called Setsubun) during which beans are thrown out of doors and windows. It symbolizes a sort of spring cleaning where evil spirits are booted out and good fortune is ushered in.
